Students, faculty kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Mouth with discussion

NIU Police Officer Daniel Mazepa (left) and NIU Police Officer Junelle Smith give students tips to make them aware of services offered to help survivors of sexual assault find help. Mazepa said taking a shower after a possible assault is a bad idea. He advised to put clothes in plastic bags to help preserve evidence. Smith said NIU offers free RAD classes, of which she is an instructor, to help students develop ways of escaping and getting away from potential abduction and assault scenarios.

Karen Baker, associate vice president and Title IX coordinator in Human Resource Services, speaks during the “Real Talk: Sexual Assault” event. “If you do something that you would want to have happen to your brother, sister or mother then keep doing it, but if you do not want that to happen to them, stop it,” Baker said.

Freshman accounting major Mackenzie Sax listens to a panel talk about sexual assault awareness and how NIU has various services to help students cope with sexual assault and sexual harassment. This is one of potentially many “Real Talk” sessions trying to get feedback from students and train staff and faculty to become more aware of sexual assault and harassment.
