DeKalb | Forensics received $4,000 in supplemental funding from the Student Association Senate on Sunday for individual competition expenses. Forensics is a speech and debate organization that teaches students argumentation, advocacy, public speaking and performance, according to its website. The supplemental funding was necessary for its members to compete individually in the National Forensics Association National Championship, April 16-20 at Ohio University, said Forensics President Julia Boyle. The supplemental funding will be used for food, lodging, transportation and entry fees, Boyle said.

“To be able to participate in [the competition] is an honor,” Boyle said. “... And it’s good exposure for these students who are a part of our organization, as well.” Senator Jordan Clayton-Taylor said although it would be fair to provide funding for Forensics’ lodging fee, meals should not be included in the funding. “I work full-time and I think that these students themselves can pay for their own meals,” ClaytonTaylor said. The fee for the meals would amount to $600, with $10 a day per person. Senator David White said some students do not have jobs during the school year and can’t afford to get meals without outside help. Senator Robert Kreml said being able to go to such a competition at this level is a high honor and giving

the organization members money for food is necessary. Black Male Initiative The Senate distributed $400 in supplemental funding to Black Male Initiative for insurance for the Apollo Show, which will take place 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Holmes Student Center, Carl Sandburg Auditorium. The Holmes Student Center did not cover the insurance cost for the event, said Ryan Hurrins, Black Male Initiative member. The organization did not plan for the Holmes Student Center not covering the insurance cost and thus requested supplemental funding to pay for it, Hurrins said. Senator Marvin Harris said the group deserved the supplemental funding because it has not put on the Apollo Show in a long time.
