What do you want to see from Letter to the Editor the Student Association’s Northern executive staff next semester? Letters to the Editor are the author’s opinion alone.

What I would like to see from the Student Association and its new directors and executive board is an openness to student suggestions and opinion. By this I mean that I want the SA to make students aware and comfortable with creating a dialogue so they know the SA is an available resource on campus. Specifically, SA should make its presence known to incoming freshman. As a current freshman moving into sophomore status next semester, I am just barely getting to know how SA works and what it does. In addition to this, I would like the SA members to show more respect for their positions and follow the rules. In regards to the all the drama that surrounded this year’s elections, I was very disappointed. The executive board of SA has many responsibilities and it is important they take these obligations seriously, otherwise the entire student-run organization suffers. So long as the new SA executive board acts professionally and communicates well with other students, I think they will be successful next semester.

The Student Association is an organization that serves students’ interests and as a student I have some things I’d like to see from the new executive board this coming semester. I’m looking forward to what more will be done about the printing subsidy issue. I think this matter should be explored in detail in regards to students’ wants. Discussion on the printing subsidy should continue and the pros and cons should be weighed to understand whether the printing subsidy is more of an advantage or disadvantage. DeKalb has restaurants serving multiple cuisines but it lacks something that attracts Indian students. I would like to see more Indian restaurants around the NIU and DeKalb area. The tuition fee is going to increase in the fall semester along with the student health insurance. The SA should be making plans to help students deal with this burden like reminding them financial aid is available or assisting students in finding oncampus employment. The student printing subsidy, food and fees are the areas that the SA should emphasize.

Star SA coverage lacking Leon Kincaid Student Association Senator

The Student Association director of Public Affairs, Joe Palmer, stressed the importance of the Northern Star’s role during Senate’s meeting this Sunday and encouraged senators to read each paper and check daily for updates online. However, after a grueling six hour session in which we passed legislation to move fall elections for senators to the spring (following next fall’s election) and to approve of the Executive Cabinet appointments, I am disturbed to find that the coverage doesn’t mention the move of elections. This was a significant and much needed change from how the SA has operated in its nearly 50 year history. If the Star wants to have any elbow room to complain about the SA (as it should), then it needs to recognize the importance of the work done to fix what’s broken. There are several senators who have put in many hours of research in authoring bills to change the bylaws.
