Members of the Vanity dance team rehearse for the Face-Off dance competition in the Holmes Student Center, Regency Room on Tuesday. Face-Off will be at 7 p.m. Friday in the Holmes Student Center, Carl Sandburg Auditorium.
Dance teams to compete in annual competition Alexis Malapitan Staff writer
DeKalb | The Liberated Minds Organization will host its last Face-Off competition after seven years. The organization will celebrate the last Face-Off with a weekend of events including a DJ battle and a Face-Off after party. Face-Off is an annual dance competition hosted by the Liberated Minds Organization. The competition includes a panel of judges who will critique the teams in two rounds, one being television shows and the other being freestyle. This year, three of the 10 dance teams at NIU will compete for the final Face-Off title. The competition begins at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Holmes Student Center, Carl Sandburg Auditorium. NIU dance teams Vanity, Supremacy and Final Warning will be in attendance, showcasing their talent and fighting for the top spot. Page Palmer, senior family consumer and nutrition sciences major, said Face-Off is the biggest dance competition on campus. Palmer serves as the president
of Supremacy dance team, an all male hip-hop dance crew who has won Face-Off two years in a row. “This year we are stepping out of our comfort zone by adding new stunts and more technical dances. We are most excited to perform for the campus, but anything can happen this year,” Palmer said. NIU alumnus Malcolm Toure said his team, Envy, will not be participating in this year’s Face-Off. “We felt like we weren’t welcomed in the competition because we confirmed our interest in doing so twice, but we never got an answer,” Toure said. Latoya Jackson, Vanity president and NIU alumna, said the ladies of Vanity have a lot to bring to the table for the competition. “We’ll be bringing a feministic style. Even though we’re a team of all girls, there’s a twist,” Jackson said. “Our team will be showcasing different styles of dance such as hiphop, ballet and contemporary.” Tickets for Face-Off are available at NIUtickets.com and are $7 for students.
