Looking Into Legacies

Have you ever walked into a building and wondered why it was named the way it was? An official University Committee had the responsibility of naming buildings. The membership of the committee was founded in 1974, according to 1981 NIU faculty bulletin, found in the Regional History Center in the NIU Archives. Below you will find the second part to the series. Chick Evans Field House George “Chick” Evans was born June 18, 1900, in El Paso. Evans came to DeKalb in 1928 as a high school coach, then as a coach and athletic director at NIU for 39 years. Evans initiated the plan for the Huskies to enter NCAA Division I-A status. He expanded the number of sports programs from four to 11 and revamped facilities that included Huskie Stadium, Ralph McKinzie Field, Chick Evans Field House, among others. As a coach, Evans won more than 350 games in football, basketball and baseball. He led NIU to 12 league titles with six in football, two in basketball, three in golf and one in baseball. In 1940, Evans chaired the committee that adopted the nickname “Huskies” as the mascot. “Chick” was a charter member

Founders Memorial Library The library was named in recognition of four DeKalb citizens’ efforts and financial contributions: Isaac L. Ellwood, Joseph F. Glidden, Jacob Haish and Clinton Rosette. Ellwood was a part of pushing for the barbed wire patent, in partnership with Glidden. Glidden was granted the patent for fencing metal that was seen as commercially successful over many patents at the time. Haish created a patent for barbed wire also, on an “s” barb design in 1874. He was seen as a direct competitor for barbed wire and even halted production. Clinton Rosette was the founding editor of the Daily Chronicle. In the earlier years of the newspaper it was sold to Glidden. Rosette and Glidden ran the paper until Rosette’s death, according to archives. Davis Hall William M. Davis was born on Feb. 12, 1850. This hall was named after him due to his advancements in the science of physiography. Davis was both a scientist and an educator in geography and geology. His works were cited in the first volume of National Geographic and he coined many scientific terms like “cycle of erosion.”
