Have you ever walked into a building on campus and wondered how it got its name? An official university committee had the responsibility of naming buildings at NIU. The membership of the committee was founded in 1974, according to a 1981 NIU faculty bulletin found in the Regional History Center in the NIU Archives.
Holmes, president of NIU from 1949 to 1967. Holmes was born on Dec. 19, 1902, in Freeport. Holmes received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. After he studied geology and geography, he went to Illinois State University in Normal to become an administrative assistant. Holmes became President of NIU on Feb. 1, 1949. Holmes’ legacy is his remarkable expansion from overseeing 1,600 students to more than 18,000 students. During his time, the campus also grew from six to 34 buildings. Holmes developed the University Center for students and their social, educational and recreational needs. He retired from NIU on Aug. 31, 1967. Holmes died on Aug. 21, 1974 in Tempe, Ariz., according to the archives.
Newell D. Gilbert, one of NIU’s first faculty members. Gilbert was born in November 1854 in Clyde, N.Y. Gilbert’s legacy includes being coordinator of student teaching, a leader in the preparation of teachers, the first dean and the head of the Education Department. Gilbert died on Aug. 1, 1924, according to the archives.
Graham Hall Graham Hall was named after Ray Graham, a state director of special education at NIU. Graham was born in 1898. From 1921 to 1943, Graham held several roles as a teacher, principal and superintendent. Graham became the state director of special education in 1943.
