Sean Frazier Athletic Director
On behalf of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the NIU Convocation Center, it is my pleasure to welcome you to NIU. You have chosen an outstanding university where the opportunities are endless. With a wide variety of organizations and activities available, I encourage you to get involved, discover your interests and build your connections during your years on campus. With more than 100 home games, matches and meets every year, we hope you make attending Huskie Athletics competitions a big part of your college experience. NIU has more than 400 student-athletes competing in 17 sports. As a member of the MidAmerican Conference, student support is vital to the success of NIU teams. We need the passion, energy and voices of Huskie students to be heard at our games. Get on your feet, make some noise and cheer on your teams – from football and basketball to volleyball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, softball and more. The best part is, as an NIU student, you can attend any of our home regular season events absolutely free. Just bring your NIU OneCard and present it at the entrance. and check in for even more chances to win and get involved at the game. Huskie fans, led by our students, have made the home atmosphere at Huskie Stadium the best in the MAC. In 2016, there will be five games in DeKalb. We hope you will also be at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago when NIU takes on MAC rival Toledo in the Huskie Chi-Town Showdown on Nov. 9. Also, mark your calendars for Nov. 17-20 when NIU will hold the MAC Volleyball Tournament at Victor E. Court in the Convocation Center. Students have created a great home court advantage for our defending MAC Champion volleyball
team, and we’re looking forward to more of the same in 2016. The NIU men’s basketball team had its most successful season in 20 years in 2015-16. The Huskies went 18-1 at home, and we’re counting on our students to continue building that home court advantage for both the men’s and women’s hoops teams this winter. The Convocation Center is a great arena for basketball and also holds many other student-centered events, including career and job fairs, concerts, Homecoming activities and of course, graduation. I hope we’ll see you in the Convo and at all of our venues cheering on your fellow students this fall and throughout the year.

In your time at NIU you will find that sports are a driving force in making our campus a happier place, and it is highly recommended that you go out and support them as frequently as possible. Many of our sports have done really great things over the years but they often go unrecognized, mainly due to students being uninformed on what is going on around campus. Sporting events are an opportunity to meet new people, interact with friends and create moments that will last a lifetime. Often times, incoming students struggle to find ways to become familiar with activities occurring, and sports are probably the easiest and most accessible way to solve these problems. If you are unfamiliar with the history of any NIU sport, read into the record books at the NIU Athletics website. The website offers a database that presents you with the complete history of every program at NIU. Attendance at sporting events is extremely important, mainly
because success from our teams may be one of the most effective and efficient ways to give our university national notoriety it wouldn’t get otherwise. From our football team, which has made it to six consecutive MAC Championship games, to our basketball team, which put together one of its best seasons of all time in 2015-16 with an 18-1 home record, there are plenty of reasons to take pride in being a fan of Huskie sports. Our campus is filled with great athletic facilities including Huskie Stadium, the Convocation Center, Mary M. Bell Field, Ralph McKinzie Field and many more. By attending games, you put yourself in a great position to participate in special events and win plenty of prizes, helping to make your experience at NIU a greater one. Though it may be impossible for you to make it to every sporting event in your four years, your support lingers and will always be an integral part of your Huskie pride.
