Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon congratulates catcher Miguel Montero on a win against the Atlanta Braves on June 11.
Cubs team making baseball great again Scott Nicol Sports Editor
In a generation where some players, such as Bryce Harper, are campaigning to “Make Baseball Great Again” with assertions that players need more freedom to have more “fun” during the game. The 2016 Chicago Cubs do not fit this bill as they are surely not short on having fun and are easily the most exciting baseball — scratch that, sports team I have ever watched in my life and are single-handily disallowing people from thinking baseball is a dying sport. From the top of the front office with President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein and General Manager Jed Hoyer, to manager Joe Maddon — who may be the most interesting man in all of baseball alone — in the middle, to the last player called up on the roster, which occurred Thursday. With 24-year-old catcher Willson Contreras getting the call to the big leagues, this team has all the intangibles of being one of the most exciting teams ever to play
the game of baseball. They are comparable to dominant teams such as the 1927 Yankees, whose team donned the nickname, Murderer’s Row, because of the lethal lineup they boded every day with names such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri and Bob Meusel. Each of those players that year drove in over 100 runs and are to this day thought of as the best lineup to ever assemble in the majors. With an average MLB player age of 29, the Cubs are statistically one of the older teams in baseball, according to ESPN.com. Where players are thought of to be entering their prime at age 26-27 and leaving around 30-31, the Chicago Cubs look to be a force to be reckoned with for a long time to come. In an age where baseball appears to be a dying sport, the 2016 Chicago Cubs are exactly what baseball needs. A young, talented, exciting team and they are here to prove to fans all over the world that baseball is the most exciting sport in America.
