History of the Day
Search narrowed to 7 candidates for NIU Police chief The search for a NIU Police chief was narrowed to seven candidates, according to a March 30, 1994, Northern Star article. The search committee consisted of about a dozen people, including four or five students. The interviewing
process took a full day, and during half of it the candidates were questioned by public safety personnel. Candidates came from colleges like the University of WisconsinMilwaukee or Michigan State, and only two of the candidates had not
previously held positions as a police chief at a university. The search committee planned to send a final recommendation to Jim Harder, then vice president of business and operations, after all the candidates had been interviewed.
