What chivalry was back in the day is now considered crossing the line. This video tells the same story of a man trying to woo a woman but from two perspectives. Watch the video at bit.ly/1ynAeu5.

History of the Day

Students in favor of non-smoking lounge, according to poll About 60 percent of students polled voted to ban smoking in Founders Memorial Library’s lower lounge, according to an April 13, 1987, Northern Star article. Of the 1,496 students polled, 938 voted to convert the lounge into a non-smoking area while 558 students wanted to keep the lounge half smoking and half non-smoking. The poll was conducted by the Student Association Academic Affairs Committee as a public opinion

survey. The poll was conducted because the committee received student complaints about the smoke in the lounge. David Baum, then-SA Academic Affairs adviser, said he didn’t know if the poll was fair because the SA only did it for one day. Beth Titus, then-University Libraries associate professor, said if the lounge was to be changed it would be in fall 1987. Several factors were to be

considered, including student opinions and NIU’s International Facilities Environment Committee’s findings of the possibility of banning public smoking. One solution the SA suggested to solve the smoking problem was to have two lounges, one smoking and one non-smoking. This solution would also solve the seating problem because the lounge was sometimes crowded with groups meeting to work on projects.
