Rockford | Family and friends remembered the life of Geraldine Schultz, one of two women killed when tornadoes swept the northern Illinois town of Fairdale on April 9. A memorial service Saturday drew about 125 people to Schultz’s daughter’s church, Westminster Presbyterian in Rockford. Daughter Tanya Robinson said the family spent the past week combing through the debris of Schultz’s home. “We spent the week cleaning up until the lot was clear,” Robinson said. “We just had to take a moment to say goodbye, to make it seem real.” Robinson will return to Fairdale next week to work more on the lot. Son Tony Poden said in a eulogy that a quilt found in the rubble will

be a reminder of his mother’s skills. “And Mom made that happen,” Poden said. “Thanks, Mom.” The quilt belonged to her granddaughter and Schultz was planning to repair it. Robinson said Schultz lived in Fairdale for about 15 years. Before that she lived in Carpentersville and worked for a property management company when she met police officer John Yost. “She was the only woman I have ever known who said she was older than she was,” Yost said. She had recently told him she was 70. Schultz, known as “Geri,” was 67. Jacklyn Klosa was also killed when a tornado hit her home in Fairdale. The two were friends in their small community of about 150 residents.
