Track and field produced four top-five finishes and eight top-10 finishes over the weekend at the 121st Penn Relays. Senior Latesha Bigby won the heptathlon with an NIU school record and personal best mark of 5,146 points scored. Freshman Kelsey Hildreth took second place in the 10,000-meter run with a school and personal record time of 34:21.42. Senior Sidra Sherrill came in second place in the college division shot put with a distance of 14.59 meters. Sophomore Claudette Day finished in third place in the heptathlon with 5,050 points, tying her personal record. The Huskies also had one seventh-place and three eighth-place finishes. Senior Erin Scott took seventh in the college division shot put with a personal-record distance of 14.24 meters. Sophomore Jasmine Wilson came in eighth in the javelin throw at 43.32 meters. Sherrill finished in eighth place in the championship division discus with a throw of 43.96 meters.
The four-by-200-meter relay team of sophomores A’Iesha IrvinMuhammad, Alexandria Isom and Tahtyana Peer and freshman Lydia Harold broke the school record in the event, which had stood since the Drake Relays on April 27, 2012. The group took eighth place with a time of 1:35.98 to break the previous record of 1:36.68. The Huskies also participated at the Lions Invitational and the Hillsdale Relays over the weekend. Freshman Ashanti Hutton and sophomore Tyra Bickham took first place in the 400-meter dash (56.55 seconds) dash and discus (47.57 meters), respectively, at the Lions Invitational. The Huskies totaled 10 top-five finishes and 13 top-10 finishes at the Lions Invitational. At the Hillsdale Relays, senior Jamie Burr, junior Alison Olson and freshman Lorena Martin finished in the top-20 in the 800-meter run. Burr came in 12th place (2:12.47), Olson came in 14th place (2:13.10) and Martin broke her personal record in the event as she came in 18th place (2:15.30).
