Arts can enrich any major’s time at NIU Jo Burke NIU Art Museum Director

Welcome to the arts scene at NIU. Whether you plan to be an art major, business major, engineering or English major, the arts can enrich your experience of the world. Opportunities await for you to experience the visual arts while you are a student here. Check out the rotating professional art exhibitions at the NIU Art Museum located on the first floor, west end of Altgeld Hall. The museum presents exhibitions and programs that balance the challenges of contemporary art with the riches of traditional media for a comprehensive examination of visual culture. In fall 2016, the museum’s exhibitions will be part of campus-wide celebrations for the 13th anniversary of the Center for Burma Studies. It will feature highlights of the Burma art collection at NIU and recent work from the Thukhuma Collection. Winter displays will be part of a campus wide exploration, (re)presenting Guatemala, looking at arts and culture, historical, social and political issues in Guatemala. Spring exhibitions will explore political propaganda, protest and satire in the arts ranging from the works of Honoré Daumier to

Charlie Hebdo and the Onion. This grouping will include an exhibition project organized by students in the Museum Studies program at NIU. You can become an annual member of the friends program of the NIU Art Museum for as little as $10 per year as a student. Members receive information first, have priority registration, discounted pricing for the museum’s art excursion program and are invited to members only events. The museum runs several day trips per semester visiting art, architectural and archaeological related exhibitions, sites or collections. In conjunction with its exhibitions, the museum will hold visiting artists to come to campus and provide insight into their artwork or art-making process. These artists often meet with students to review and comment upon the student artists’ work. While on campus, you should also check out displays in the Jack Olson Memorial Gallery and Gallery 214, both on the second floor of Jack Arends Hall. The Olson Gallery presents both professional and student artwork, and Gallery 214 will have a rotation of students’ thesis shows on display. The School of Art also has a gallery in town at 215 N. Fourth Street. Periodically check to see what is happening there and show support for your fellow students’ work. Check out the Art Attack school, 215 W. Elm St. in Sycamore, where you can test new media to express yourself or register for a general education class at the NIU School of Art and Design.
