Basketball ready for new beginning Chris Loggins Sports Editor T @NSSportsLoggins
It’s been some time since men’s basketball has had good fortunes, but things are looking to be on the rise for the team, which hasn’t put up a winning season in nine seasons, the last being in 2005-06 when they compiled a record of 1711, 12-6 MAC. The 2014-15 season was an
improvement from previous years, as the Huskies went 14-16, with an 8-10 conference record and a 10-5 record at home. The team won four out of their last five games, giving them three winning streaks of at least three games on the season. A total of six freshmen will highlight the new team, including fourstar guard Marshawn Wilson, who committed to NIU in late March and was a finalist for Minnesota Mr. Basketball. Head coach Mark Montgomery had high praise for Wilson back in April, and seems to be excited about the addition. “Adding Marshawn gives us more depth, more athleticism and
an instant offense-type scorer,” Montgomery said. “Marshawn is capable of scoring in bunches and has the potential to be an impact player at NIU.” Whether or not 2014’s improvement and an array of new talent will be enough to take the team further has yet to be tested, but it seems as though the right steps have been taken towards a positive future. Women’s Basketball The biggest story of the offseason for women’s basketball was the hire of head coach Lisa Carlsen. Following the resignation of Kathi Bennett in April, there was a two-month
search for a worthy candidate to take the helm. After a lengthy and renowned career at Lewis, Carlsen made the decision to leave, partially due to her desire to coach for a Division I program. It’s been nearly ten years since the Huskies had a winning record, and Carlsen will be sure to have her hands full. It’s unlikely that the tides will change in just a season, and it’s important to be patient in waiting for dramatic changes to the team’s fortunes. They ended the 201415 campaign with a 12-17 record, which isn’t terrible, but can surely be improved upon.
