Coaches react to MAC rule change Tom Burton Staff writer

DeKALB | The Mid-American Conference Council of Presidents amended the time obligations for student athletes Sept. 8. The decision process was held at the May 2016 MAC meetings, where the MAC and student athletes’ proposals were approved; taking affect in the 2017-18 academic year. NIU coaches gave their opinion about what they thought of the rule changes and what they will mean to student athletes and their sport.

Volleyball Head Coach Ray Gooden Gooden said there are always things that can be done to make life better for student athletes, and it is important for athletes to have a good start in everything they do. “I think the intent of [the rule change] is good. The proverbial work-like balance for everybody is always something to talk about. The student athletes have really expressed how they’re trying to have the best possible experience and they feel that having some of these parameters and guidelines can Ray Gooden be a positive Volleyball Head Coach thing for them. I think the student athletes, particularly the [Student-Athlete Advisory Committee] having a say is a very important thing. Hopefully the dialogue will continue so everybody will have the best experience possible. There will be some challenges but we will work through it.” Mark Montgomery, head coach men’s basketball Montgomery said all conferences are discussing changes to the rules,

but the MAC took a stand and didn’t want to wait longer for changes to take place. Coaches want the best for their athletes in all aspects of school. “I like that the MAC has jumped out there first and made a change. I know where the student athletes are coming from because they want to lock it in and say ‘I can study at this time and take some time off at this time.’ Giving the athletes time off after a return from a road trip and to Mark start a semester, Montgomery I think that’s fair. Men’s Basketball Class is the pri- Head Coach mary goal and for them to be able to get their books, study and get off to a good start, I think that’s really important. We, as coaches, have the athletes’ best interests in mind.” Tom Porten, head coach men’s golf Porten said the actions are a proactive step by the MAC and that it

promotes a clear separation between a student’s athletic time and other obligations. Porten said coaches are in the business of coaching student athletes and that they always want what is best for the athletes. “I think it’s great that our conference is taking a lead in the issue and some coaches may like it, some may not. It is just part of the process, and it just requires coaches to be able to manage time differently. I think it’s good for the student athlete to have a role and a say in the matters that affect them, and it teaches them about a lot of Tom Porten good life skills Men’s Golf Head Coach that they will need when they graduate. I think this is all centered on making the student experience better. Anytime the MAC can take the lead on something like this, I’m in favor of a proactive step like this.”

Football Head Coach Rod Carey Carey believes the rules are subject to change and conversations are still to be had. Overall, he applauds the MAC athletes who made this possible, and it is important that everyone is working together on this issue and sharing common interests. “I think that some things are going to come out as far as more discussions to be had. Everyone is together on the fact that time management for a student athlete is one of the trickiest things that we have to navigate. The student athletes absolutely Rod Carey have to have Football Head Coach a voice, and I think that’s important. I think the conference and everyone is working in the right direction.” Lisa Carlsen, women’s basketball head coach Carlsen said it is great that players and coaches are working together to make this change and that the two parties are not in any feud or disagreement. She knows it is important for athletes to speak out and have their voices be heard. “I think that, conceptually, the rules make a lot of sense as far as the time demands we put on our kids and what we’re asking them to do. What we are going to find is that we are going to have to work through some things logistically. For the most part, coaches are on Lisa Carlsen board as well Women’s Basketas athletes for ball Head Coach the right reasons. good dialogue. Obviously, we want our student athletes to have a voice and for it to be heard, and I think that forum is perfect. As things continue to be talked about, I think a coach’s perspective is also important.” Eric Luzzi, men’s soccer head coach Luzzi said the new obligations should not be too much of a change from his standard protocol. “Of course there are going to be changes, so it would be a slight adjustment for some teams. It’s a good thing for our conference to be on the leading edge of Eric Luzzi things. In gen- Men’s Soccer Head eral, I do think Coach it is healthy. My only small concern is what our student athletes are really going to be doing with that extra time.”

MAC rule changes 1. Establish a two-week, timeoff period from a required athletics activity following the end of a championship season segment. 2. Require student-athletes that are out-of-season to have a week off with no athletics obligations at the beginning of each semester. 3. Prohibit athletics obligations between away-from-home travel and practice for at least eight hours following the return to campus. 4. Require practice schedules be shared with student-athletes weekly and followed by coaching staffs. If changes are required, they must be known by studentathletes 24 hours prior to the scheduled practice time.
