CHICAGO | Thousands of longtime, loyal Chicago Cubs fans packed the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, and even more crowded the streets of Wrigleyville to witness a piece of history Saturday night. The Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 in game six to win the National League Championship Series 4-2 and will advance to their first World Series in 71 years. The Cubs’ offense got the best of Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw early in game six of the NLCS, as he gave up two runs in the top of the first inning. After eventually giving up a 5-0 lead, Kershaw was pulled after six innings. Starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks started game six for the Cubs and went 7 2/3 innings of shutout baseball while only allowing the first and the last hitter he faced to reach on base hits. Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester went 1-0 with a 1.38 earned run average in two starts, earning him

series co-MVP honors with Cubs second baseman Javier Baez. Baez had several defensive gems during the series against the Dodgers and also batted .318 with four doubles, five RBIs and two stolen bases. “Amazing. Amazing,” Baez said after receiving the MVP award as fans chanted his name, according to MLB’s website. “It’s crazy living this life right now.” The Cubs’ struggle to hit the ball carried over from the National League Divisional Series against San Francisco Giants. Until game three of the NLCS, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and shortstop Addison Russell had three hits combined and zero RBIs after combining for 204 in the regular season. The bats came alive in game three with both players hitting a home run. This ignited the rest of the team, as the Cubs got their bats going and scored 18 runs combined in games four and five at Dodger Stadium, taking a 3-2 lead in the series. The Cubs have only two World Series appearances in the past 108 years. In their most recent appearance in

Ohio University The weekend began in Athens, Ohio, against the Bobcats in a hard fought battle that ended with NIU winning the match in five sets, (2520, 25-23, 18-25, 17-25, 15-9). Senior middle blocker Jenna Radtke set the tone for the match as she led with a careerhigh 21 kills. This is the second consecutive match Radtke has recorded a career high in kills, passing her record of 20 against University of Akron Oct. 15. “Jenna knew she had to step up at times throughout the match, but she made some critical plays for us in the fifth set,” said Head Coach Ray Gooden, according to NIU Athletic’s website. “She made some key plays, but she did a great job of helping us in our transition to create some offense.”

two sets 25-20 and 25-23. Ohio won the second two sets 25-18 and 25-17, but NIU won the fifth and final set 15-9 to defeat Ohio three sets to two. “[Friday] was great theater, and we did a great job of winning the right points,” Gooden said, according to NIU Athletics website. “The second set was indicative of that.” Kent State University The second match of the weekend against Kent State was close as the teams split the first four sets, alternating wins, 19-25, 25-22, 25-10 and 22-25. Senior outside hitter Mary Grace Kelly led the Huskies with 21 kills in the matches. Brereton led the Huskies on defense again with 33 digs. Gooden was pleased with the way his team persevered in such a tough matchup. “There were a lot of ebbs and flows in the match tonight, and we did the things we had to win the match; winning the right points,” Gooden said, according to NIU Athletics website.
