Netflix Original movie “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives In The House” was released Friday and proved to be an eerie horror movie. In the beginning of the movie, Lily, a young hospice nurse, played by Ruth Wilson, breaks the fourth wall and tells the audience she is 28 years old and will never be 29 years old — she alludes to the fact that she is going to die. This is a part of the plot most movies leave to the end. The movie is about Lily who is hired to take care of Iris Blum, a well-known author of horror novels, played by Paula Prentiss. Lily moves in with Blum, who lives alone in a large house. Blum seems terrified of Lily when she meets her. Soon after Blum starts to think Lily is a woman named Polly, the name of a character from one of Blum’s books, “The Woman In The Walls.” The book tells the story of Polly’s murder, and Blum notes in the beginning of the book this is a true story that was told to her by Polly. Strange things happen in the house from the beginning of the
story, such as unexplained footsteps and rotting walls. In most horror movies, when something strange happens, the character reacts to it. Lily doesn’t react much when weird things happen, and even when she does react, she continues with her life ignoring the pattern of odd occurrences. In many ways, “I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House” is very different from other horror movies. Lily narrates the movie in a nervous whisper. I would recommend this movie for people who avidly watch horror movies. It isn’t the movie for people who are looking for a scare but rather for people looking for something intriguing to watch.
