The Herts magazine with the information young families want

In this issue:

From your Editor… At the time of writing, the summer holiday has not yet begun and here I am thinking about Back to School! Let’s admit, it is a subject that is not often far from a parent’s mind whatever age their child. For those of us who are coming up to the end of those cosy primary school years, it is exciting to think about what lays ahead though it is also a little worrying - for parent and for child; but it needn’t be. Liat Hughes Joshi gives some good ideas that will help you to smooth the way during the transition to ‘big’ school. When your kids have time on their hands, you want to keep them engaged. As usual, in the July/August issue, Summer Fun is a major theme and we have brought you a slice of what is on offer around and about. At Families we are all very excited about the launch of our new website. You can read more about it in News & Views on page 5. Suffice to say that it will be all you want and more. The new site (www.familiesonline.co.uk) will launch in early July, so do go and explore it for yourself. In the meantime, have a wonderful summery summer and we will be back in the Autumn.

Where are we? Baldock, Bishops Stortford, Borehamwood, Chorleywood, Harpenden, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hertford, Hitchin, Kings Langley, Knebworth, Letchworth, Radlett, St Albans, Stevenage, Ware, Welwyn GC. Pick it up from cafes, playgroups, nurseries, schools, activity groups, selected shops, surgeries, leisure centres and libraries. Email or call to request copies for your venue.

News & Views Historic Royal Visit to Berkhamsted School The ultimate honour was bestowed on the whole community of Berkhamsted School on 6th May, when Her Majesty The Queen, the school’s Patron, paid her first visit to mark the historic occasion of the school’s 475th anniversary. Founded in 1541 by John Incent, Dean of St Paul’s, to educate 144 boys; in 2016 the Berkhamsted Schools Group oversees the education of over 1,800 pupils. The effect of the impending royal visit extended beyond the school gates and into the town where there was an air of excitement and anticipation as the time of the royal arrival approached. The fact that the visit coincided with The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations gave an added fillip to what was an important event that will be recorded in the annals of Berkhamsted School’s long history. Here is an account of the day’s events as

seen through the eyes of prep school pupil, Ishan Sharma, and sixth former, Chanté Bohitige: Ishan writes: “As we walked down the High Street, I was amazed to see that it was a totally different town. There were Union Jack flags and bunting hanging around the street. People were gathering with excitement to catch a glimpse of The Queen." Chanté continues: “From the moment that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth entered the historic Lych Gate at Castle Campus in her gleaming Maroon Bentley, silence fell upon the school as it would seem that the surreal nature of what was happening before our eyes suddenly dawned on us. Greeted by a host of dignitaries, Her Majesty made her way to the quad, where she was met by the School’s Combined Cadet Force." Ishan adds: “The crowd exploded, cheering

as loud as ten lions giving it their all. [The Queen] looked radiant in her fuchsia outfit.” Chanté concludes: “Even after the Royal party had left the school, the sense of community amongst students, teachers, caretakers and chefs is something that I doubt will ever be matched …. I have no doubt that this visit will remain engrained in each of our memories for many years to come. “ For more information about Berkhamsted School visit www.berkhamstedschool.org

Butterfly World was a much loved attraction for local people and also for visitors coming from further afield until it was forced to close suddenly late last year. Families, organisations and businesses in St Albans and beyond are being asked to add their voices to the campaign to get this project reopened. Save Butterfly World is a community group who want to take over the project and run it as a charity. The Group are working hard to find a way to save the butterfly habitat and reopen this much missed resource, but they need our support. Butterfly World was an important conservation project for wildlife, in particular for native butterflies. It enhanced the

education of the 12,000 school children who visited in 2015 and it also contributed to the local economy. The group has already garnered 55,000 signatures on their petition on change.org. John Horsfield, Chair of Save Butterfly World, said: “I am a great believer in the power of communities, if enough people want to make something happen sometimes it can.” Find out more and sign the petition at www. savebutterflyworld.com or email contact@ savebutterflyworld.com Families Herts will continue to update you with news of this worthwhile campaign as it progresses.

Back to School How to help your child transfer to secondary school It’s one of the biggest transitions of childhood: moving to secondary school. From travelling independently to remembering when homework is due in, your child will need to become a good deal more self-sufficient. Here’s how to ease the transition…

During the months before your little one makes the big move to secondary school, it’s recommended that you begin the following… Ramp up responsibilities Senior school children have to be considerably more responsible for their own belongings and themselves. Whereas primary school teachers send letters to parents, at ‘big’ school, communication on day-to-day issues might well be to your child only. Begin by trying to remind your child less about what kit or books they need daily.

Begin building independence out and about Most secondary school pupils travel to school minus mum and dad, so get yours used to being out without you. It’ll be less daunting for them if this starts on the journey to primary school, rather than being thrown into travelling alone on a lesser-known route. If they haven’t started walking to school alone or with a friend already, the summer term of Year 6 is a good time to begin. The first time or two you could walk a little behind them at least part of the way to keep an eye out.

Listen out for concerns Some children take this huge change in their stride and are ready to move on, while others will feel anxious. Common concerns include getting lost around a much larger school, dealing with the journey, making new friends and managing the homework load. The key is to keep communication going between you – ask now and then how they’re feeling about their new school and listen and reassure them.

Attend settling-in days Most secondaries hold a session for new joiners, usually during the summer term of Year 6. This is an important opportunity to get to know the buildings, potential classmates and teachers and it should make the first day less intimidating. Consider attending any social events at the school too, such as a concert or the summer fair.

10

Introduce them to other children going to the same school This won’t matter so much if half your child’s class is heading to the same secondary but if there won’t be a familiar face, try and find prospective classmates through the local grapevine and then arrange a meet up.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind once your child has started secondary school… Expect them to be tired and emotional… Many Year 7s get very tired thanks to the ‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more complicated journey. Stick to early nights and restful weekends to fend off exhaustion – and the moodiness that goes with this.

Get super-organised with homework At primary, pupils might only have had a small amount of homework; expect the game to be raised now. Not only will there be more but keeping on top of when it all needs handing in can be complicated. Help your child help themselves by suggesting they complete each task soon, so that it doesn’t build up. A homework planner can also be useful.

Get used to knowing much less about what goes on In primary, you might well have been at the school gates most days and familiar with your child’s friends, parents and teachers. This will change: with independent travel comes a more hands-off approach.

Be there for them It’s tempting to think this independence means you’re being made redundant come September but they’ll still need you - albeit in different ways. Be there as a sounding board - someone to listen and advise. And of course, they’ll still be calling upon the Bank of Mum and Dad and parental taxi service more than ever… By Liat Hughes Joshi Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including 'New Old-fashioned Parenting' and 'How to Unplug Your Child' (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).

Push the straws through the pieces of fruit one at a time – make sure you mix up the colours to make it look extra special.

You will need: 1 punnet strawberries 1 large pot Greek yoghurt How to make: Wash the strawberries and trim the stalks and leaves off each one. Usually filled with tofu, herbs and noodles, they are a great snack and if you can find the rice paper wrappers in a local oriental food supplier, you can not only make those but also these amazing fruity rolls, perfect for lunch boxes. You will need: Rice paper wrappers Mixture of summer fruit; watermelon, strawberries, apple, pear, peach, mango, kiwi fruit etc. Mint leaves (optional) Lime juice How to make: Take the fruit you are going to use, wash and peel if necessary, then cut into very small, cubes. Drizzle with lime juice over the fruit to prevent browning and stir well to combine the fruits together. Add a few small or torn mint leaves if your child likes them. Place a small pile of the fruit at the centre of a rice paper wrapper. Roll one side in, then the two ends and finally roll it up. Lay it on the open side to stop it falling open. If you like you can tie it with a chive or a small piece of string but this should be taken off before your child eats it. Place a few rolls in a small lunch box for your child’s packed lunch.

Skilling Up

Teach your kids to ride a bike in 7 easy steps Teaching your child to ride a bike has never been easier with these seven simple steps. 1. Begin with a balance bike

5. Look for safety add-ons

Balance bikes are great because they have no pedals or stabilisers and are much lighter. Because children can use their feet to balance and move themselves along, those as young as two can learn to balance on their own.

A steering limiter is highly recommended as this will enable your child to keep in the right direction and prevent falls. While you’re looking at safety equipment, it’s worth purchasing bright coloured clothing or safety vests to ensure she is seen by others at night time.

2. Start on flat ground Always begin to teach your child on flat ground – so at a local park or area with no traffic. You can work your way up to small hills.

6. Get an adjustable seat

At the age of two and a half to three, children are able to operate a hand brake, as long as it’s gentle enough for their fingers. Begin by showing your child how the brake works and encourage her to practise.

Try to choose a bike that has an adjustable seat as this means the bike can be adjusted to suit their height. When your child is on the bike, both feet should be firmly on the ground – not just the toes – and the knees should be slightly bent.

4. Always wear a helmet

7. Upgrade to a bigger bike

Wearing a helmet is a must. The sooner your little one gets used to it, the better. We recommend that you shop for a helmet together to ensure your little biker likes it and will therefore wear it.

When your child has developed enough skill and confidence you can transfer them to a pedal bike without stabilisers.

Paddling Pool Fun

Get Wet! There’s nothing better on a hot summer’s day than packing up the kids and heading off to your local paddling pool to cool everyone down. If you are feeling adventurous and want to go further afield, Hertfordshire has an enviable choice; from the humble paddling pool to the full blown lido. Most are located in municipal parks and some will have a picnic area and children’s playgrounds nearby and refreshments available as well. The traditional paddling pool is starting to give way to the splash park. These have different water features such as ground fountains, mushroom showers, tree showers and children will have endless fun with

them. And, because splash parks have little or no standing water there is a much lower risk of drowning. You will still need to keep a sharp eye on things though – accidents, unfortunately, can still happen. So, what are you waiting for? Pack up a picnic, grab the arm bands, the sun hats and a plentiful supply of sunscreen and off you go!

Water Safety Tips: • Young children should only use a paddling pool with adult supervision. • Explain the dangers of paddling pools (and garden ponds) to your child. • To avoid slips and trips walk with your child on the poolside. • Children should not remove their buoyancy aid without an adult being there. • Don’t allow your child to enter the pool without your permission.
