Claire’s reputation precedes her. Her designs have graced the pages of national publications as well as received coverage from international media outlets such as German Elle and Vision France to name but a few. While Claire specializes in bespoke occasion and evening wear pieces, her ostentatious designs are often seen sharing the spotlight with celebrities such as Nile Rodgers and the girls from Chic,

who have been spotted wearing a custom-made collection of jackets and other Claire Garvey designs during the band’s appearances at A Night at The Proms in Amsterdam, New Years Eve celebrations in Dubai and on the X Factor UK. And if that isn’t impressive enough, Claire’s couture has also been credited with being the costumier of choice for Lisa Madden, Miss Universe Ireland, when she participated in the Miss Universe competition in Miami and donned the spectacular ‘Celtic Warrior Princess’ ensemble. Claire Garvey was also selected by Madame Figaro as one of six winners from around the world to win the covetable White Swan competition in Paris.

CHARLOTTE SULLIVAN

EQUAL MAGAZINE Vol 1 2015

Chameleon Charlie (Charlotte) Sullivan is a fresh face to Northern Ireland’s modeling scene and already represented by the esteemed Alison Campbell Modeling agency. The allure of casting Charlie is a duality that empowers her to be, interchangeably, an exquisite creature of natural loveliness and a provocateur of glamour and wildness. The only feature of Charlotte’s more precious than her visage is her heart of gold. While developing her modeling portfolio is on Charlie’s agenda, her true calling is assisting children with special needs in the classroom, with aspirations to set-up a musical theatre group and glee club designed with an ethos that revolves around equality for all children. Charlie’s intermingling of her performing arts experience, diligent intelligence and kind demeanor not only make her a delight to work alongside but her beautiful charm and poise transform her into a muse for artists, photographers and designers to draw ideas from. Charlotte Sullivan is a name to watch on the catwalks, on stage and one day, even on bookshelves.

EQUAL MAGAZINE Vol 1 2015

“Fashion is an exciting and vibrant path that places accent on individual artistic progress; it is an expression of feelings and thoughts which influences everyone’s lives. Challenging and evolving, fashion is a tough yet exciting area to study, but this is what I am preparing for since I decided this is the path I want to follow.” Tara Dickson, the eighteen year old Regent House’s A-level pupil, had an exciting and whirl winding past few months. It’s not only the fact that her school formal took place and she did the labour of love over her formal dress, a multi layered, watermelon red silk satin and silk chiffon with over 500 freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals hand-sewn on but, the evening after, Friday 17 October she saw her first fashion collection shown on the catwalk of the West Coast Cooler Belfast Fashion Week, 10th anniversary edition.

12

Her interest in fashion started in Art GCSE with a Hibiscus dress she made for her first project. It brought her unexpected praise from the teachers “as it showed maturity in design and finish” and a well deserved top in the UK, 100% in GCSE Art and Design. Her imagination started running wild, creating new designs, which reached new heights when she started working on the Africa project. “I visited Kenya as a child and it brought back fond memories of the bright tribal clothing giving me the desire to research the African fashion. I came across “The Africa Channel” which showed a programme: Designing Africa, which gave me insights into new ideas, innovative use of textiles and colour. I discovered designers who have inspired me immensely: Patricia Mbela’s signature use of beads in her garments and Jamil Walji’s material manipulation - creating new fabrics through weaving strips of African wax cotton, and

these were used as sample experiments in my own work, where I created concepts for a final piece.” Her work experience placement was with David Henderson who gave her an insight into the practicalities of the fashion industry: sewing, patternmaking, alterations, so she decided to extend her knowledge by attending short courses at the world famous Central Saint Martins: Patternmaking (understanding of 3D designs); The Fashion Sketchbook (“I created a big fat sketchbook filled with ideas, potential collections and new confidence to unlock my creative mind”); Textile Design “(I explored a variety of textile print techniques including transfer printing, screen printing and used Photoshop to design a final piece”). Tara aspires to pursue a fashion designer career and she has had a few slight touches (which needless to say were thoroughly adored) with the London student life at CSM. During her family holiday in Spain last summer, Tara visited and had an informal interview at the Marbella Design Academy (English tuition and diploma issued by Middlesex University London) and she was offered

an unconditional place for September 2015. She also attended a Dressmaking evening class at SERC College Bangor, to learn the practical sewing skills indispensable for this career. Her newly learnt skills and love for Africa determined her to work during the summer on a special dress she always wanted to make. She decided to blend and join the two projects she

She showed it to the Belfast Fashion Week organisers and they asked for more garments before accepting her into the show. From there on, the collection started emerging, with quite a few of the designs developed during the two weeks “Sketching for Fashion” course, in London. In the making of the outfits,

traditional original African Wax Print cottons, pure silks, taffeta, were used alongside modern spiderweb and four-way stretch meshes and tulle. She presented a fourteen outfit collection called Africa / Origami. “This was a long and painstaking task but I was able to withstand the pressure (although I felt like crying at the end of the show: with pride of my achievement and sheer relief of getting the job done). It gave me the assurance and the taste of success and, I’m in no doubt, this is the feeling I want to continue having throughout my career. It also showed how much more I have to learn, I have so many ambitions left to achieve which the university course can provide.” Unfortunately, although she was invited to show this spring at the Belfast Fashion Show, school and university interviews commitments don’t allow her

the time to design and make a new collection. One of her dresses shown in the BFW was chosen by the editor Lewis Cameron as top five looks in the Designer’s Night (see article attached). Another dress shown in the BFW and Project ‘95 show, The Chinese Lantern dress, has also made the top 20 final of “The National Fashion Textiles Competition 2015” open to 16-19 years old fashion students. The dress will be part of an exhibition at Olympia, London with the winner decided on the 5th of March. Tara has already got another unconditional offer, from De Montfort University Leicester and another one from Bristol’s University of West England with a few more important interviews to follow, including Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt and London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins. This makes her the first pupil in the past 12 years in Regent House Grammar to be accepted for an interview at the prestigious establishment, the Mecca of fashion design.

worked on during the Art and Design AS level: an African theme and the bee hive / origami project. Although her “bee hive” dress was shown in the Junior Creative Peninsula in the Ards Town Hall, as part of the Student Exhibition, and she also was awarded full marks, 100% and top of UK in the AS level, she was a little unhappy with her choice of materials used in making of the dress and the fact that, as the project had to be completed in 10 hours, the hot glue gun had to be used in completing the dress. She thought she could do a much better job, make it wearable, so she made a similar, hand-sewn dress, out of excellent quality African wax gold print cotton fabric and stretch mesh, putting a modernist touch in the blending of two continents’ ancient traditions.

He can be seen regularly performing as a solo acoustic artist as well as fronting numerous bands: NI Soul Troop are one of Belfast’s favourite live acts, guaranteed to fill dance-floors with Donal’s original brand of soul music; Uncle Social, although quiet of late, released their debut album last year, co-produced by Tom Newman (of Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” fame); The Vibes are a new reggae-inspired project combining members of some of Belfast’s favourite groups (Pocket Billiards, Boss Sound Manifesto, Doghouse and, of course, NI Soul Troop). The first Friday of every month sees either The Vibes or NI Soul Troop performing in one of Belfast’s top venues, The Empire Music Hall. As an orchestral/choral arranger he has also collaborated with many other artists, emerging talents Ciaran Lavery, Malojian, Pat Dam Smyth, to name a few. The past few years have seen a few changes and Donal is now a frequent collaborator with contemporary dance and theatre company Ponydance, working as musical director for a number of sell out shows in Belfast and Dublin.

S

2015 sees the release of his first full solo album, “Superpowers”; although elements of his folk and soul roots are inherent, the album has also quite a jazz inspired touch. For this recording some of the finest session players from both sides of the border were enlisted, with a 12-piece band including horn quartet and string quartet, plus an additional 8 backing vocalists. A big show is currently being planned for June of this year in The MAC Theatre in Belfast, where the album will be performed live.

EQUAL MAGAZINE Vol 1 2015

There seems to be something in the Mourne Mountain air. Its people have always been noted for their culture, especially in music and song. The likes of Mayobridge’s Kieran goss and the Sands Family have been around the world several times sharing songs and stories with avid listeners. And from deep in the Mournes, in the village of Hilltown, comes the next generation of songwriting. ‘Latter Day Sinner’ is the latest offering from Matt McGinn. It follows up his 2011 album Livin’ which was met to much acclaim. This time around, even before its February 2nd release, ‘Latter Day Sinner’ has been making a lot of noise. ‘What Happens’ co-written with Nashville songstress Madeleine Slate has already been featured in several US dramas and the album opener ‘I’m not Looking Down Anymore’ won Matt a coveted place at Ireland’s largest festival Electric Picnic in 2014.

BBC’s Ralph McLean says, “Such a great talent... Such a great songwriter... Matt’s latest album ‘Latter Day Sinner’ just keeps getting better with every play in my opinion....” And the music specialists at No Depression state, “From sight and sound this album truly is beautiful.”

Matt seems to have a hand on every part of this album, from writing the songs and arranging string sections, to producing, mixing and engineering. He calls on the help of several friends from both sides of the pond. From Nashville, a Madeleine Slate duets on the opening track, co-writer Michael Logen offers some very tasteful guitar parts on ‘Lie’, and Willie Nelson’s right hand man, Mickey Raphael plays some beautiful harmonica on ‘We’re Fine’. Whereas from this Isle, Anthony Toner shows off his not so well known Dobro skills, Rachel Coulter from the Farriers displays some exquisite harmonies and Illustrator Mark Reihill has designed an incredible cover.

Anthony Toner MILES & WEATHER New album released late February and Northern Ireland tour, February to May 28

Anthony Toner is back on the road with a brand new album, Miles & Weather, the Belfast man’s sixth collection of original material. From March through to late May, Anthony will be touring across Northern Ireland, playing a mixture of solo performances and ‘In the Round’ shows with friends, in support of the album. There’s been a lot of water under the bridge since Anthony last took to the road. As always, expect some background material and shared experiences, superb guitar playing and singing and songs that will move and inspire. Reaction to the new material has been strong during recent performances, but the repertoire will feature the new material alongside old favourites such as ‘Sailortown’, ‘Well Well Well’ and ‘East of Louise’. Performances are always intimate, connected and warm, and Anthony has a reputation of converting audiences to friends wherever he goes. Anthony’s last collection, Sing Under the Bridges, was shortlisted for the Northern Ireland Music Prize. The new collection deals with themes of distance, connection and disconnection, wear and tear – as the title track says: ‘a conversation between distance and love’. The collection was recorded at Clive Culbertson’s No Sweat Studios in Coleraine, with a very stripped-down aesthetic - Anthony on guitars, vocals and percussion and Clive on bass and harmonies. The album will be available for sale from Anthony’s website at www.anthonytoner.net, and will also be available for download from the usual online sources. It will also be available for sale over the counter at a range of local music outlets – and of course, at all of Anthony’s shows.

‘A masterful composer whose songs are meticulously crafted, poetic and suffused with compassion, warmth and wisdom’ – Trevor Hodgett, Culture NI website

EQUAL MAGAZINE Vol 1 2015

WELCOME TO MIGHTY MOJOS Voted ‘Best Band On The Planet 2013’ on Severn FM’s Blues Hour by the general public, with the runners-up reading like a Who’s-Who’s of Blues Rock Royalty, namely King King, Albany Down, The Black Crowes and Joe Bonamassa the Mighty Mojos burst onto the UK and World Blues scene with a bang! The Mighty Mojos are a musical blast of fresh air! Refreshing and original, they sound like nobody else out there. A blend of rock and blues songs with killer hooks and grooves, catchy riffs, dynamic drums and bass combined with one of the best vocalists you’ll ever hear! It’s a recipe for a great band. That’s why they’re called the MIGHTY MOJOS.

30

The fantastic vocals are supplied by the one and only Lee Hedley. He’s been fronting his own highly successful band for years but when the chance came in 2012 to front the Mighty Mojos he jumped at it! A brilliant and charismatic frontman, he also pays a mean harmonica too, when he feels like it! Texas based guitar legend and founder member of the100 million album -selling rock group Nazareth, Manny Charlton, is currently working closely with and producing the Mighty Mojos for an imminent special release EP. Manny Charlton quoted recently “Lee is one of the best vocalists i’ve ever heard...” Drums are by Hillsborough native David Kennedy who can hammer those snares and toms into total submission! He’s played in many line-ups for years, including touring Europe with Jim Armstrong and Them.

Bass is supplied by Belfast man Ali McKenzie who lays down a mean groove that’s tight and melodic. He’s a vastly experienced session player that has been playing closely with drummer Davy Kennedy across Europe with Jim Armstrong and Them. Guitars are plucked by Ballymena man David McClean, who also writes most of the bands and records the bands material. He’s got a unique distinctive slide style. The current line-up has been together for 18 months writing and rehearsing the songs to get them ready for unleashing to the world. Now its time to listen!

“in my honest opinion, and with the right management, the Mighty Mojos could potentially fill the void that’s been left by Led Zeppelin and Free” - Manny Charlton. www.signagenorthernireland.com
