Where Two Rivers Meet by Tom Koob
For millennia, the rain fell on the dark forest of hardwood oaks and shortleaf pine. The water burrowed through the limestone and flowed into La Rivière Blanche. The river carved the uplift, creating a sinuous path between dolomite hills. Mastodons and cave bears stalked the upland prairies and wooded hollows. In the rock shelters on the alluvial terraces above the river, the Bluffdwellers made their homes. These Native Americans hunted the forests and fished the streams. Over centuries, their knapped points and the bones of their dead were buried in the shelter middens.

Explorers wandered through the unnamed region until the anglicized appellation Ozarks was placed on early maps. Eventually, by steamboat, wagon or on foot, early settlers followed the rivers and made their way into the White River Valley. Subsistence farming made for a difficult, but honest existence. In 1835, Henry and Elizabeth
Schell established a trading post on the shoulder of a prominent knob and soon the village of Shell Knob grew up along the farm-to-market trail north of the confluence of the Kings and White Rivers. When a post office was formed at Shell Knob in 1872, the “c” was dropped from the name. By 1882, the village had forty residents, a public school and a Christian Society church building. In the early 20th century, Shell Knob was a thriving market town with three general stores. Development of Hwy. 86 through Shell Knob in 1933 aided the town’s growth. People traveled to the town near the two rivers to take advantage of the fishing and to float the streams.

In 1950, a traveler could follow the winding highway down off the plateau and into Shell Knob. They might stop at the Whisman or Cope stores to pick up sandwiches and fishing bait. Then on south, past the Epperly place where several cabins dotted the bluff above the 1927 White River Bridge. Crossing the White, the highway passed Two Rivers Camp, wound up through run-a-round hollow and rose again to Pinnacle Point, high above the Kings. Here a family could stop and have a picnic lunch, before driving on to Viola. Perhaps they would see a group of float fishermen rounding Couch Bend as one of Jim Owen’s guides deftly paddled their wooden johnboat to the best fishing spots. In 1954, construction began on Table Rock Lake, a project that would flood the valleys and forever change the landscape and culture of Shell Knob. Table Rock Lake would force the relocation and renaming of the roads and the loss of the old White River Bridge. In 1957, the lake prematurely filled, inundating the incomplete work of the reservoir project. The bridge at Shell Knob was flooded to the top of the upper superstructure. This event prompted local residents to fight for a bridge over the new lake at Shell Knob.

The original plans for Table Rock did not include a bridge at Shell Knob, which meant the town would be forever isolated and its connection to Viola would be forever broken. Residents throughout the region clamored for a central crossing where the Kings River arm would meet the White. They argued that with bridges at Kimberling and Eagle Rock, there would be a 35 mile length of the lake without any bridge. Residents including John Cupps, Jake Turner, Isaac Epperly, Melvin Swofford, and Judge Millard Whisman presented their case to Congressman Charlie Brown and Senator Stuart Symington. The federal and state governments were convinced and the Central Crossing Bridge became a reality sixty years ago. The old Morris Bridge at Needle’s Eye was demolished with underwater explosives and its rubble now lies on the bed of the lake, 100 feet below. The Central Crossing Bridge rose high above the lake bed running from the bluff at High Dive down to the peninsula where Hidden Cove entered the lake. Deep below the new bridge, the Schreiner Ferry once transported people, goods and livestock across the mighty White River. Shell Knob developed along with the new reservoir. The old town is still there, but the re-routed Highway 39 takes a new course past the school, past the modern conveniences of a lake resort town, down onto the newly re-named State Senator Larry Gene Taylor Memorial Bridge. Shell Knob and Viola thrive thanks to the efforts of those who fought for the Central Crossing. People have always come here for the water. Now, they come to enjoy the clear, clean water of Table Rock Lake, where two rivers meet.

What Lies Beneath BY TOM KOOB
Last year, the 40th annual Homer Sloan Buddy Bass Tournament, held yearly in Shell Knob, offered a prize of $10,000 for any entrant who caught a largemouth bass breaking the Missouri State record of 13 lbs. 14 oz. Well, no one claimed the prize, but it did generate plenty of discussion about the possibility of breaking this long-standing record. Table Rock Lake is known as one of the best fishing lakes in the country and rightly so. Is there a state record bass lurking in the deep waters of the lake? Possibly. 417-858- 3 3 0 0

Before the lake, the White River and its main tributaries, the James and Kings Rivers and Long Creek, supported excellent populations of black bass, catfish, walleye, crappie and panfish. At one time, the free flowing streams held eel and paddlefish and alligator gar, perhaps up to ten feet long. The rivers were popular destinations for float fishing for the first half of the 20th century. Impounded in 1959, Table Rock has continued to provide viable habitat for a variety of healthy fishes. Deep, clear and clean, Table Rock does not have the standing timber or aquatic vegetation of lowland lakes. But it does have a variety of structure, considerable rocky cover, and great populations of baitfish, crawfish, and invertebrates. These conditions, along with a mild local climate make Table Rock a year-round angling paradise. Largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass thrive on the ample food web. An observant angler might even catch a rare meanmouth bass, a cross between a smallie and a spot. With a plethora of conditions, bass can be found shallow, on transition areas or deep. Depending on the time of year, techniques including topwater, pitching soft plastics or dropshotting can be effective. Last year was a banner year for fishing on Table Rock. spawns. Huge schools of shad have enabled these fish to grow swiftly and multiply. All sub-species of black bass are being caught in quantity and quality. Table Rock has recently had some of the best crappie fishing in years. Both numbers and size of crappie have been excellent. Spoonbill have also benefited from high spring lake levels. Particularly up the James, the paddlefish have run in numbers with many goodsized plankton feeders being snagged. Flathead catfish in the ten to twenty pound range have been common and in addition to live and prepared baits, will also fiercely attack artificial lures. Channel cats make good eating and these fish are plentiful on Table Rock. Walleye can be harder to locate, but they’re out there. With the right equipment and pattern, ‘eyes’ are trending well in size and quantity. These fish like the clear, clean water and available prey of Table Rock. Bluegill and sunfish haunt the docks and rocky shorelines. Any youngster can get hooked on fishing when they’re shown how to catch these scrappy panfish. For decades, the streams that formed the reservoir were renowned for their sucker fishing. Gliding along the river at night, under the light of a lantern, peering into the dark water with a long-handled gig, gigging remains a traditional Ozark sport. Recently, Table Rock has recaptured its reputation as a great destination for ‘rough’ fish. Alternate angling methods like jug fishing, trotlining and bow fishing are growing in popularity. Not only are these techniques successful on good populations of gar, carp, drum and buffalo, but several state records have been broken under the new record classifications.

Maybe someone will catch that new state record latgemouth. A bass weighing fourteen pounds will be hidden. She’ll be old and probably not willing to move very far. She will have an excellent hiding spot either in woody or rocky cover. This giant bass will lie in wait and ambush a large meal from hiding only when convinced of the reward. She’ll be more active and probably shallower in the spring, but could be caught any time of year. There’s only one way to find out. w w w. she l l kn o b. c o m
