Hurricane Season

Preparations

F

By McKenzie Millis, Director of Assisted Living at King’s Crown

riday, June 1 is the first official day of the 2018 hurricane season. Taking the time to prepare now is crucial to ensure all are prepared, should a storm threaten the community. Shell Point management has a comprehensive emergency plan for responding to weather emergencies, which has been recently updated following Hurricane Irma. If an evacuation is ordered, residents and staff in all Shell Point healthcare facilities (the Larsen Pavilion, King’s Crown, The Arbor, and The Springs) will shelter at The Arbor assisted living facility. Independent living residents will stay at the main hurricane shelter located on The Island. The updated hurricane plan also includes new hurricane chairs to be provided for all residents and new, upgraded meals to be provided in both hurricane shelters. Gone are the days of peanut butter and jelly and tuna fish sandwiches! Instead, residents will have freshly freeze-dried meals. These entrées can be reconstituted to provide a hot meal option for breakfast, lunch and dinner while in the hurricane shelters. Examples

What should be packed in your hurricane kit? Pillow (optional) • Blanket • Two changes of clothing • Toiletry items • Books, magazines, cards, etc. for entertainment • Washcloth • Towel • Medications for one week (if self-administered)

include oatmeal with blueberries or scrambled eggs for breakfast, while lunch service could feature beef stroganoff or macaroni and cheese. All meals have been reviewed and approved by Shell Point dietician and taste tested to provide a highquality dining experience.

It’s a Packing Party! This month, staff will help all assisted living residents prepare a small hurricane bag, ensuring that it is ready and available should an emergency occur. Shell Point will store your kit during the entire hurricane season. At the end of the hurricane season, the kit will be returned.

While the hope is that Shell Point never needs to initiate its hurricane plan or evacuate from a coming storm, residents can take comfort in knowing that there is carefully crafted plan in place for weather emergencies. Ongoing collaboration between Shell Point and Lee County Emergency Management also ensures the safety of residents and staff. If you have any additional questions, please see the front desk. Published monthly for assisted living residents at Shell Point.

n May, residents from The Arbor, King’s Crown, and The Springs lovingly created handmade onesies to be gifted to newborn children at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

The Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, the only pediatric hospital of its kind located between Tampa and Miami, opened a new building just over a year ago at Lee Health’s HealthPark Medical Center. The

128-bed, seven-story facility is designed to make children feel like they are in a fun, safe space – rather than an institutional setting. The building is filled with bright colors, activities and interactive stations for both patients and visitors.

hen the newly constructed recreational wing opened recently at The Springs, assisted living residents were delighted to see the addition of a billiards table. Some residents expressed interest in a first-time lesson. That is where independent living residents Joe and Lynn Tutton (Eagles Preserve) come in. Joe and Lynn have played pool together for the past few years, and when they learned of the need for a billiards teacher in the assisted living residence, they eagerly agreed to share

their love and knowledge of the game. This kind couple has dedicated their time to volunteering once a week to provide assisted living residents with lessons and practice time! If you’d like to meet up for a pool tutorial, head to The Springs on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. “We see residents making progress from week-to-week, and each new session brings new faces who want to learn this fun game,” said Joe. “It is a joy for Lynn and me to volunteer in this capacity! It’s rewarding for everyone involved.”

children with their labor of love. Residents will also enjoy a tour of the beautiful facility by Lee Health staff members. This project is part of Shell Point assisted living’s Giving Back program series, which

connects assisted living residents with ways to participate in community and social involvement initiatives that benefit local nonprofit organizations.

Happiness Is in the Air By Susan Flanders, King’s Crown Activities Leader

t was a bright sunny afternoon, the perfect day for flying. King’s Crown residents took this opportunity to design and create paper airplanes during a meeting of the Happiness Club. After designing the paper airplanes, residents launched the projectiles off the King’s Crown catwalk, with the goal of hitting the beautifully colored target located on the pavement below. Residents cheered and supported each other during breezes aided these well-crafted planes to travel long this friendly competition to see whose plane would go distances. In the end, everyone was a winner for getting the farthest. Everyone laughed and smiled as warm Gulf out and enjoying the gorgeous day with friends! June 2018 | 3

Summer Time is

Family Time!

By Linda Schmierer, Assistant Chaplain

S

ummer is almost here! Plans are being finalized for vacations and visits with family and friends. Many have grandchildren and great grandchildren who now are out of school and home for most of the summer. Things can be very hectic during the school year. Precious time spent with extended family tends to be minimal. Younger children have homework and after school activities or sports that keep them pretty busy! Summer is a wonderful break to catch up and spend quality time with them. The wonder of God’s creation is described beautifully in Job 12:7-10: But ask the animals and birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In His hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. Grandchildren and great grandchildren can explore God’s creation in a fun way with trips to nature parks, botanical gardens and, of course, most children’s favorite place, the zoo! Quiet time can be filled with playing board games and reading Bible stories and other good books that promote Christian values. Let God help you make summer time into family time!
