February 2019

Love Is in the Air By Shauni Helmlinger, Arbor Activities Leader

F

ebruary is a wonderful month, full of love, at Shell Point’s assisted living residences. It is a special privilege to enjoy wedding photos shared by residents, some who were married 70 years ago and are still just as much in love then as they are today. Simply reminiscing over a picture can bring up old feelings, awaken new feelings and remind you of the special memories and love that was shared. The funny thing about love is that it tends to spread, and like a smile, it is contagious. Now is the perfect time to spread even more smiles and love to those around you. A simple loving word or hug means all the world! Although love is shared throughout the entire year, February brings a special and sometimes new

opportunity to spread love to those new and old friends. Assisted living residents will celebrate the love February brings at Shell Point during the upcoming Sweetheart Dinners. Residents will dress for the occasion and enjoy a delicious meal surrounded by lovely decorations, music, friends, neighbors and loved ones. You’ll find more information about your building’s event on the special events page of this newsletter. A lifetime of love is still being shared among many assisted living residents this month, next month and every day of the year. Love is always in the air at Shell Point! Published monthly for assisted living residents at Shell Point.

AN ENCHANTING EVENING OF

Carols and Friendship By Amanda Pendergrast, Springs Activities Leader

I

n December, assisted living residents from all three buildings enjoyed an enchanted evening cruise aboard the Suzy Q. Braving cold temperatures in the 60s, residents bundled up with blankets and Santa hats to keep warm. The boat set sail just before sunset and boaters caught the last glimpses of the beautiful Florida sun setting in the distance. The sky was a brilliant mix of pinks, purples and oranges as residents started traveling by boat along the beautiful canals around Palm Acres and Shell Point. “We enjoyed the lovely Christmas lights that the residents of Palm Acres used to decorate their boats and docks,” said one intrepid boater. “Many even came out to the docks to wave and sing a few carols as we went by.” When it was time to give everyone’s singing voices a rest, Captain Russ and the crew handed out eggnog and cookies while Christmas music played on the Suzy

Q’s speaker. It was truly a special evening. The Activities team is already hard at work, planning another sunset cruise for the near future. There is just something so special about being out on the water at sunset, especially in Florida, which has the most beautiful colors in the sky and the tropical landscape is hard to beat. Isn’t it so wonderful to live at Shell Point, where the scenery is as beautiful by boat as it is by land?

God’s Crazy Love By Pat Divinnie, Assistant Chaplain

W

e are really not sure what to do with February. It is not quite winter; not quite spring. If you hail from the north, you know winter can be tenacious and February, with its changeable weather, often foils the predictions of the most seasoned forecasters. Not to worry though. Despite the weather, Hallmark reminds us that Valentine’s Day is February 14, so we rush to the store to buy cards bedecked with verses pledging love and affection. Any occasion in which we can express love for another is a good thing, but the hard part is living it out. Human love can be fickle and affected by many things. Not so with God’s love. It never changes because He never changes. The best news is that He loves you! What have you done to earn His love? Nothing. Can we fall so far that He can’t reach us? Nope, never. What if

we struggle to understand God’s love for us? Many of us do, but He loves us nonetheless. God’s love is unmerited, undeserved and totally free. It costs us nothing, but it cost Him everything. You may know the verse John 3:16.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” He gave His most valuable possession for you and for me. What kind of God would do that for a depraved, sin-sick humanity? A God of mercy and grace. A God who is crazy in love with us. A God who after accepting His Son’s sacrifice on our behalf, raised Him from the dead. A God who sent you the most precious Valentine you will ever receive – Jesus!
