Why Shell Point? By Rachel Zellers, Director of Long Term Care
I
have worked in long term care for 30 years, including more than 20 years as a nursing home administrator. Shell Point was on my radar from the time I arrived in Florida twoand-a-half years ago. So, I was excited when the position of Director of Long Term Care became available. And I was ecstatic when I was offered the position. Why was Shell Point on my radar? Why did I want to work here? Simply, because Shell Point is truly unique. As a ministry of The Christian Missionary Alliance, faith is lived out at Shell Point. The core values say it all:
Caring for residents and employees Serving residents and employees Satisfying residents and employees I have seen these core values in action every day. They are demonstrated in the staffing levels that both residents and employees benefit from, as well as the resources that are generously provided. They are demonstrated in the excellent care and in the wide range of services available. They are demonstrated in the commitment of
the staff in assuring the residents are well cared for, even in difficult circumstances such as a disaster. Let me give you the concrete example of a disaster drill that occurred in January. First, I have never experienced such a thorough drill in my entire career. Involving EMS and the Fire Company provided important crucial training not only for Pavilion staff, but also for the members of these organizations. And I was humbled by the number of residents who volunteered to participate as “victims.” The rehab department rearranged their treatment schedules and appointments to allow use of the therapy gym. And all the Pavilion staff performed admirably. Maintenance and safety staff supported the Pavilion team and the SPTV department filmed and photographed the event to provide a record of what occurred so it could be reviewed later. It truly was a team effort! I’m sure that each of you also have concrete examples you could share that support why you chose to work or live at Shell Point. I’d love to hear them!

ver walked on water? “Impossible!” you say? A short account given in scripture tells of an attempt made by the disciple, Peter. Jesus had earlier sent the whole batch of the disciples off in their boat to precede His arrival on the distant shore, but contrary winds had worked hard against their efforts. In the wee hours of the morning, they were still grappling with the elements when they saw a figure walking toward them on the water. They all began screaming in terror as “the ghost” approached. A familiar voice alerted them to the fact that this apparition was none other than their Master Himself. Jesus never generated a miracle without circumstances necessitating it or an integral purpose designed to instruct. Though the rest of the disciples cowered in the boat, Peter wasn’t going to waste this moment. He said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” As Jesus invited Peter to join Him, he stepped out onto the stormy waves and began to walk. With whom do you identify
in this story? I’m afraid fear would have held me back; fear of the impossible, fear of failure, fear of drowning in the dark. Peter, instead, used this circumstance as an opportunity to grow his faith in God. Yes, he did get overwhelmed with his surroundings and began to sink shortly thereafter, but Jesus quickly caught him as he suffered no more than a soaked suit. Who really failed? The eleven disciples who stayed aboard, or Peter who abandoned ship? Jesus may have said that Peter displayed “little faith,” but that’s a great deal more than none! We can’t let our tempestuous experiences leave us ravaged and empty. Peter was willing to take shaky, risky steps away from the boat toward the One he believed had the power to hold him up regardless of the violent storm surrounding him. If we follow Peter’s example, our faith can draw us closer to God even in our darkest hours. Walking on water instead of wallowing beneath the waves is Christ’s desire for each of us… If only we’ll come to Him.
The purpose of National Nutrition Month is to help the public become aware of the importance of good nutrition and a healthful eating plan. This year’s National Nutrition Month theme is:
Eat Right, Live Right, Feel Right One goal of National Nutrition Month is to discover the benefits of a healthy eating style, along with learning how to choose foods and drinks that are good for your health. By adopting these goals, this year’s theme strives to help people manage their weight successfully and reduce their risk of chronic disease while promoting general health. In order to help you meet these goals, Shell Point offers a LifeQuest menu which presents options that are lower in calories, fat and sodium. The dining team at the Larsen Pavilion look forward to serving you soon! Registered Dietitian Maddie Longville, RD, LDN, is originally from Southeast Michigan where she received a bachelor’s degree in dietetics from Michigan State University in 2016. She completed her internship in the Detroit area, and has been working in long term care settings since then.

veryone enjoys a little competition from time to time; this time, it was serious business. As part of the Shell Point Games, held during the week of January 21, Larsen Pavilion residents competed against residents from Shell Point’s three assisted living residences. 17 brave members of the Pavilion Games team competed in bowling, golf and the bean bag toss. The good-natured competition found everyone cheering each other on – even across teams! There were also moments of heightened suspense. During the golf game, you could have heard a pin drop when someone was up to “putt!” The results? Not only did the Larsen Pavilion take second place in golf, but they also placed first and third in the bean bag toss. And for a total victory, the Pavilion residents swept first, second and third place in bowling! Congratulations – and GO TEAM!

oodbye winter, and hello spring! Although Florida’s warm, tropical weather essentially feels like summer year
‘round, Larsen Pavilion residents like to celebrate winter for at least one day. On Thursday, January 24, the Pavilion hosted a Winter
Wonderland experience. Residents enjoyed a fun day of festivities – and even made some snow!
