T
he Larsen Pavilion Auxiliary lovingly provides Shell Point with funds from its annual Bakeless Bake Sale fundraiser to make improvements that benefit Larsen Pavilion residents. Among the many generous “gifts” provided from this year’s proceeds is a specialized bus that would allow the activities team to take Pavilion residents off-campus. “We need a vehicle that can be responsive to the needs of residents with gait or balance issues, carry multiple wheelchairs and allow staff to safely address any resident needs while the bus is still in motion,” said Pavilion Activities Supervisor Tacey Larimer-Tettaton. The idea proved so promising that a generous Shell Point resident, who prefers to remain anonymous, made a personal donation of $50,000 to be earmarked for the new vehicle. Together with funds from the Bakeless Bake Sale campaign, the Pavilion Auxiliary’s
benevolent gift enabled Shell Point to purchase a brand-new 2019 Odyssey Turtle Top bus with seats for 12. Every bus seat can be folded up and secured. “That means it can transport up to five wheelchairs at a time,” said Tacey. But that’s not all! “Unlike most Shell Point buses, the flooring has a flat, even surface that makes it safer for walking to your seat. There are also overhead grab bars throughout the vehicle that help let staff help residents while the bus is still in motion,” Tacey added. The Pavilion Activities team eagerly anticipates christening the bus and is hard at work planning future trips. “The bus is ideal for our needs. It’s super easy to use, and has so many extra safety features built in that we can’t wait to take it out for a spin,” said Tacey. “And we have the Pavilion Auxiliary and generous resident donations to the Bakeless Bake Sale to thank for it.” One thing’s for certain: Pavilion residents are ready to roll.

Here, There & Everywhere By Tacey Larimer-Tettaton, Pavilion Activities Supervisor Larsen Pavilion residents stayed busy with a variety of on-campus activities in May, from attending concert dinners and events at The Village Church to embarking on sunset cruises aboard Shell Point’s own Suzy Q boat. On one voyage, residents event spotted two juvenile ospreys at home in their nest, in the hopes of catching some flight training. What’s next on the itinerary? Getting out and about off-campus, thanks to the brand-new bus provided by the Pavilion Auxiliary! The Activities team can’t wait to spread its wings, planning trips to places like Ding Darling, Lakes Park and C.R.O.W.

The Glory of Imperfection By Rebecca Reynolds, Assistant Chaplain One Saturday in June, my husband Gary and I caught the ferry to the remote island Caladesi. The weather had been rough for a week and we navigated our way through numerous pieces of flotsam deposited along the beach from the storms. Suddenly, our eyes were drawn to something strangely beautiful in the distance. It definitely did not resemble any familiar dune vegetation as it glittered and shimmered, bouncing back the sun’s rays. We quickened our pace to see what this could possibly be. Finally, we reached the tangle of branches and twigs of an ancient weathered tree adorned with hundreds and hundreds of seashells in all shapes, sizes and colors. Numerous beach walkers before us had fashioned this unexpected masterpiece, and I, too, wanted to contribute to its unique beauty. I searched the shoreline for a perfect shell. You can imagine my

dismay when I discovered I couldn’t get my ideal shell to stay on any part of the tree. As I studied the situation, I realized each securely attached shell bore some sort of imperfection. In fact, these breaks and worn holes actually allowed the shells to be skewered securely to the tree so that they remained immovable through strong winds and storms. What a paradox! The captivating sight of the shell tree was only made possible through brokenness. It was as if the Father God was giving a vibrant illustration of the grace the Apostle Paul speaks of in 2 Corinthians 12:9. “He said, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’” When we acknowledge our brokenness at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ, God lifts us up and secures us, and He will transform our imperfections into places of divine grace.
