PICTURE THIS! Mister Sandman Sculpt Me a Dream
By Lynn Schneider, Editor It’s that time of year when family and friends unite and cameras snap photographs of holiday celebrations. Photos are a special memento of good times and they can capture the essence of a particular time in our lives in a unique way. Photos are especially important because they tell the story of who we are and where we’ve been. A glance at old photographs reminds us of specific times and places and helps us pass these stories on to others. With this in mind, Shell Point prepared this year’s Christmas gift wall calendar as a “family album” full of historical pictures of the way Shell Point was years ago compared to the way it is today. This calendar will be used throughout 2008 as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our community. Next year will be filled with events and activities to celebrate our anniversary and help tell the Shell Point story. At these events you will be seeing a variety of photographs from Shell Point’s history and will learn about some of the major milestones our community has achieved along the way. Historical photos aren’t the only ones you’ll be seeing next year. As you already know, each month Shell Point Life is full of photographs that convey the lifestyle and happenings of our community. Residents tell us they really enjoy see-

ing photos of themselves and their friends. This month’s issue is no exception as it is brimming with photographs that recap several recent events including Celebration, where the lifestyle at Shell Point with its many activities, groups, clubs, volunteer and recreational opportunities was put on display for residents to enjoy and learn about what is available to them in their own backyard. Just a few of these great photos are shared starting on page 25. For those of you who have a silly streak, be sure to check out the photos on page 20 of the employee pumpkin carving contest. It was amazing to see some of the fun and creative entries that various departments put together and you’re sure to get a chuckle. The Moonlight Over Venice event that was held in The Woodlands delivered up more than just an evening of Italian Renaissance. Indeed, there are many photos from this elegant evening on the back cover – I could go on and on. The point is this month’s magazine and the pictures inside tell an important story – one that shows how full and satisfying retirement living can be. It’s a wonderful story and one that we are happy to tell!

While folks up North may already be building snowmen, here in Florida we have our own version – sandmen! But these aren’t just any old sandmen – these come in a variety of shapes and forms as part of an amazing group of sand sculptures created for the 21st Annual American Sand Sculpting Championship Festival on Fort Myers Beach. More than 65,000 people visited the event and viewed the sculptures over a weeklong period. Shell Point residents had the opportunity to view the incredible creations on a resident trip to the event where they enjoyed walking the beach, sipping cool drinks, and picking their favorites. Ultimately, the wind and waves had their way and the sculptures faded back into oblivion awaiting next year when an artist’s imagination will spin a new dream out of the sand.

’Tis the Season for Poinsettias A Mexican legend explains how poinsettias came to be associated with Christmas. Apparently, a poor little girl who could not afford a gift to offer to Christ on Christmas Eve picked some weeds from the side of a road. The child was told that a humble gift, if given in love, would be acceptable in God's eyes. When brought into the church, her weeds bloomed into red and green flowers and the congregation felt they had witnessed a Christmas miracle. Poinsettias originated in Mexico, where the Aztecs used them to make a reddish-purple dye out of the bracts and a medicine for fever from the plant’s latex. Joel Roberts Poinsett, Ambassador to Mexico in 1825, brought the plant back to his plantation in the U.S. He grew the plants in his Greenville, South Carolina plantation and gave them out as gifts to friends at Christmas. Since then, poinsettias have become a symbol of Christmas. Their bright, red leaves add to holiday cheer in stores, homes, and churches. Today, the annual sales of poinsettias exceed the annual sales of all other potted plants combined. Poinsettias represent over 85 percent of the potted plant sales during the holiday season – to the tune of roughly 220 million dollars worth of poinsettias sold.

riends Winnie Ballard and Ann Erickson work in the Boutique at Stein Mart, a fashionable designer discount store located in Fort Myers. Stein Mart is a chain of stores with branches scattered across the country. The store is renowned for its high-end fashion at great low prices and the Boutique section is full of particularly nice clothing. Ann and Winnie are employed at the Fort Myers store and have found that this small part-time job not only funds their own shopping trips, but also fills needs for community and friendship. Winnie and Ann have known each other for many years and were neighbors in Stuart, Florida before moving to Fort Myers. Winnie had friends who lived here at Shell Point and for years had considered the option of moving down herself. One year ago, she took the step, sold her home, packed up, and moved into Lucina, on The Island at Shell Point. Ann, who had watched Winnie as she made the move, decided to follow shortly thereafter. Winnie remarked that many people tried to deter her from moving when she was still young, but after visiting her friends who were so happy, she replied that she was eager to make the Island at Shell Point her home. She loves the water, the birds, and walking her small 7pound dog around the Island. Ann now lives in Spoonbill, one of the buildings of Eagles Preserve. She said that it was great to have a friend, Winnie, already established here at Shell Point when she made the move. She has begun
to build friendships with other Eagles Preserve residents that have moved in over the last several months. Ann works one day a week on Tuesdays at Stein Mart. Since Winnie works on Saturdays and Tuesdays, the two carpool to work on the day they work together. Working together has allowed Winnie and Ann to enjoy time in a setting outside of their homes. They enjoy the ride to work and sometimes take advantage of the freedom to go out to eat after the work day. It is the people that keep Winnie com-

ing to work. She loves to meet customers and spend the days with the other employees of Stein Mart. Not to mention, “it gives me lunch money—I like to go out to lunch!” Winnie has always been intrigued by clothing, since she grew up watching her grandmother, who was a seamstress and a tailor. And Ann simply can’t resist the fun of working at Stein Mart. She is a shopping expert and working at Stein Mart gives her a discount to the store and a little extra money to use on shopping trips. So between new friends and new clothes, these saleswomen have a dream job! Working at a department store in the boutique has offered Winnie and Ann the opportunity to follow the most current trends and styles. Some popular themes this year are animal prints, black and white with a bold splash of color, v-neck tops and long skirts. Stein Mart carries all of these things and much more including home furnishings, linens, jewelry, accessories and even men’s clothing! And that is the best part of Stein Mart, according to Ann. It is a one-stop-shopping experience. Both Ann and Winnie have an eye for shoes, so Stein Mart’s extensive shoe department also keeps these women happy. Ann’s primary fashion tip is that when you are shopping, don’t worry about the size you see on the tag. These days sizes vary from store to store and many women get discouraged or alarmed because they think that they shouldn’t wear something if it is not the numerical size they are used to.
Ann thinks that when shopping, you should simply try on the clothes you like and “buy what looks good, what you like, and what you feel comfortable in.” Winnie says that you’ve always got to be true to yourself. Choose outfits that you like; find out what looks good on you by trying things and stick to those styles. And be sure to choose colors that you like! Working at Stein Mart has been one factor in helping them achieve a well-rounded lifestyle because they have continued to learn and grow as retail salespersons. As working women, they are able to have some time away from home and enjoy a different setting. And they are finding ways to unite life at Shell Point with life at Stein Mart. Winnie has recruited 17 of her Shell Point neighbors to do their shopping at Stein Mart and even won a store-wide contest for bringing in the most new business! So, if you’re ever out shopping on a Tuesday, stop by Stein Mart for fashion advice and a nice visit with Ann and Winnie, two very fashionable friends.
Winnie loves to meet new customers and enjoys spending the day with other employees of Stein Mart. Winnie Ballard

UPS READY TO DELIVER The UPS Room in the Island Tunnel will be a busy place as the holiday season approaches. To help the dedicated resident volunteers running the UPS Room during this busy holiday season, please note the following guidelines. From Monday, December 3, through Friday, December 14, the UPS Room will be open for business for the extended hours of 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon, for shipping only (with already boxed items), and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for preparation and packaging. Since the volunteers will only be able to handle two customers at a time, a number will be given to customers in the order they arrive. Overflow customers may wait in the Tarpon Room next door until their number is called. Preparing your package beforehand is the easiest and quickest way to get your special delivery to its recipient. If you go to the
UPS Room during the morning hours, your package should already be boxed and ready to be shipped. Please do not just drop off a package in the UPS Room and leave it there, as the customer needs to pay and wait for the processing to receive their tracking number from the UPS volunteer. Also, please use denominations of $1, $5, or $10 bills, as the UPS Room has only small amounts of change on hand. Only cash or checks are accepted – no credit cards. Please note that glass and ceramic items are not guaranteed. In the afternoon hours, UPS volunteers will be on hand with boxes and packing supplies to help you package your materials. On Friday, November 2, folks came from far and wide to peruse and purchase from the wide array of over thirty-five craft tables at the Shell Point Crafters “Holiday Bazaar.” Impetus for this event was spearheaded by Rosemont resident, Barbara Hilton, who got things rolling with the first successful Crafters show held last February. This bazaar was even bigger and better, due to much more advertising, resulting in many attendees from outside Shell Point. Barbara says she saw this kind of event as one that could bring together craft people of every kind in one venue that would be able to attract outsiders as well as residents. She has been ably assisted by Starr Ramsey and Helen Remmington, and the three of them saw to all the advertising and placement of free newspaper announcements, room layout and tables, and headed up the many, many meetings that always precede an arts and craft show. Stock Wrap-Up 2007 and Outlook for 2008 Even the most knowledgeable investor knows that in today’s market environment, information about the financial markets alone is not enough. Sometimes it takes the advice of an investment professional to put all of that information into context; to know not only what to buy and sell, but when; to determine which strategies are complementary to your personal financial goals and to make sure your portfolio is properly positioned. More significant than the individual securities you hold in your portfolio, proper asset allocation can increase the potential for returns while mitigating individual sector risk. Good News BY TIM STEPHENSON, DIRECTOR
In more than 20 years of financial planning I have often been asked, “How can I get some money out of my IRA or pension plan without paying all of those taxes?” Now after all of these years the IRS has provided us with a truly unique opportunity. If you are 70 1/2 or older, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 may be of significant benefit to you. This benefit which is scheduled to expire December 31, 2007 allows for IRA rollovers to public charities like Shell Point by IRA owners 70 1/2 years of age and older. Only regular and Roth IRAs qualify for the rollover. Donors with other qualified retirement plans may be able to roll them over to an IRA and then use the IRA rollover to make a gift. IRA owners should contact their IRA custodian to direct transfers to qualified public charities. They will have the transfer form. The GOOD NEWS is that the IRA distribution to charity WILL NOT be included in the donor’s

federal taxable income. While there is no charitable income tax deduction for the IRA rollover, the distribution is not included in the donor’s taxable income, simplifying the donor’s tax return and often saving some tax. An added bonus is that an IRA rollover by December 31 will qualify for all or part of the IRA owner’s required minimum distribution for 2007. Action Required by December 31
You and I hear a lot of hype when it comes to finances these days. This is truly a great opportunity for those who would like to take advantage of it. Act early! Time is of the essence because many trustees will require two weeks or more and the opportunity runs out December 31. If you would like to learn more about giving through your IRA before year end please contact me, Tim Stephenson, in The Legacy Foundation office. I will be glad to talk to you about how you may benefit Shell Point or any of your favorite charities through your giving.
The Legacy Foundation does not offer specific legal or tax advice. As always, you should consult your tax advisor about the specific implications for your situation.

Gold Steinway Piano Resonates with Roger Willilams in Concert “Having Roger Williams perform in concert was a real coup for Shell Point,” said Dawn Boren, Director of Resident Life, “and it was serendipitous to have the opportunity to see and hear the beautiful Steinway Limited Edition Gold Piano made exclusively for him!” While all residents who attended the November concert had the opportunity to see the gold piano on stage as Roger Williams performed in concert, a special group of donors, the Friends of the Arts, were invited to a special continental breakfast on stage behind the curtain the day before the concert. The guests enjoyed nibbling on delectable breakfast goodies and sharing special stories about concerts they have attended in the past. Several residents tried to pick which concert was their favorite. But the real fun came when Pat Specht (Lakewood resident) sat at the piano and played Autumn Leaves – the best-selling piano recording of all time, released by Mr. Williams in 1955. In addition, the piano’s history and artistry was well spoken of by Greg Billings, proprietor of the Steinway Piano Gallery of Bonita Springs. The celebration concluded as Randy Woods lead the Friends of the Arts in a sing-a-long as Bobbie Greer (Coquina) enthusiastically played the gold piano. “The piano itself is beautiful, a real work of art,” said Randy Woods, Minister of Worship & Music for The Village Church and a member of the Fine and Performing Arts Advisory Board. “I was very impressed with the piano and it was a thrill to get to sit at the keyboard and play a song,” said Woods, although he finished his comment with a twinkle in his eye, “of course, the Bible tells us that we should not covet!” The gold piano was created by the most well-known piano company in the world, Steinway & Sons. Steinway shipped the special grand piano from California to Shell Point for the concert via Wheaton Van Lines. In 2004, the creation of the gold piano was the first time in the company’s history that Steinway & Sons’ manufactured a special piano for one of its artists. The piano was created as a tribute on the part of Steinway & Sons to honor this special artist and their relationship with him. The gold piano is a Limited Edition, designed in the art-deco style, and reflects architectural lines from that historic period. It features a gold-metallic finish accented by a high-gloss top coat. Lyrics to the first verse of his most famous song, Autumn Leaves, decorate the piano’s perimeter. In addition, falling leaves appear between lines of the verse. The music desk is decorated with signature notes from the song, and the piano plate inside offers a custom-painted scene in vibrant fall colors that emulates an autumn landscape. The original price of the piano would have been $258,000, but now that the piano has become almost a legend of its own, many music lovers believe it is priceless.

Shell Point Welcomed Subway Spokesman Jared Fogle
Lex and Eileen Roulston of Parkwood met Jared after his presentation.
Jared Fogle of Subway Sandwich fame stopped by Shell Point to share his inspirational weight loss story. More than 200 residents of Shell Point filled the auditorium to hear him tell the ups and downs of his weight through early childhood and how he lost a whopping 245 pounds on the “Subway Diet” as he calls it. Jared catapulted to overnight fame nearly ten years ago after embarking on this unique weight-loss regimen while attending Indiana University. Weighing in at 425 pounds, he knew he had to change his diet
drastically and started eating Subway sandwiches every day for more than a year. After successfully losing the weight, he first appeared in a national TV ad for the Subway restaurant chain in January of 2000, and today he juggles a career of motivational speaking and media interviews. “Shell Point residents enjoyed having Jared visit our community as part of his tour through Southwest Florida,” said Lynn Schneider, assistant vice president of marketing and communications. “All of our residents recognized him and they were amazed
by his story.” One of the things that really hit home for many of the seniors was his explanation of how he gained the weight as a child. “Many of the residents here at Shell Point are grandparents and several mentioned their personal concerns for grandchildren who are dealing with weight issues,” said Schneider. “Childhood obesity is something we are hearing a great deal about and it has become a national concern. Hopefully his tour through Southwest Florida will help raise awareness for this issue.” Jared Fogle discussed his life experiences and offered diet and nutrition tips for all ages. After his presentation, Subway provided free samples from their Fresh Fit menu for the guests in attendance.

The Larsen Pavilion Angel Tree Tradition
Once again, for the third year, The Angel Tree will be a pretty focal point in the Pavilion lobby during the 2007 Holiday Season. The Angel Tree concept began in 2005 with the Chaplain’s Ministry Committee of the Larsen Pavilion Auxiliary. Its purpose is to honor the memory of those residents who passed away this year.
16
Shell Point Life | December 2007
The angel ornaments feature a golden seashell body to represent Shell Point, gold satin ribbon for the wings and the dress, a white wooden marble for the head and a gold-beaded halo. Combining all of these materials to produce the beautiful angels is the creative expression of many Pavilion residents. Once the angels are completed, they are hung on the Christmas tree. At the end
of the Holiday Season, the angels are made available to surviving family members to be added to their treasured memories of their loved one. You can view the memorial tree, and the sparkling angels adorning it, throughout the month of December.

The much-anticipated renovation project has begun at King's Crown and to kick off the construction project, residents of the building were invited to attend a special meeting to meet the leadership of the renovation team that will be managing the construction. Rita Southern, director of assisted living, and three members from Steven's Construction addressed the crowd of residents at the "Get to Know the Contractors" event. The contractors introduced themselves, and explained the first steps they will take in the one-year renovation project which focuses on re-designing and re-decorating the ground floor and bringing enhancements to the six parlors, as well as new wallpaper, lights, carpet and doors throughout the building. Lenny Macari, project manager of daily operations, explained that they will provide residents with construction updates and underscored the importance of safety during the renovation. He said the construction crews will do their best to keep noise to a minimum. Rita explained the construction guidelines that Steven's Construction has pledged to take to do their best to try to be unobtrusive and cause the least amount of inconvenience to King's Crown residents and staff as possible. The project will transform the interior entrance area to King's Crown, which includes shifting the reception area around and adding a new lobby and lounge. Contemporary new flooring, wall treatments and enhanced lighting will show off a lovely entrance that will greet residents and guests. The interior structural work will be done in phases, starting on the ground floor; then on to the third floor, working on the North wing first, then beginning on the West wing after completing 50% of the North wing. After the third floor is done they will do the second floor, then the first floor, ending with the completion of the ground floor. Fall 2008 is the anticipated completion date. Rita expressed the excitement and enthusiasm for the future Community Room and Grand Salon and reminded the group to have patience as they do some cre-

In the end though, residents agreed that the renovation will be well worth it, as the renovation design boards were displayed and residents could see the impressive renderings of new colors, textures and living spaces.
Representatives were on hand from Steven’s Construction to spend time visiting with residents of King’s Crown and explain the process.
The project will transform the interior entrance area to King's Crown, which includes shifting the reception area around and adding a new lobby and lounge.

She passes along her expertise to others aboard the Suzy-Q, where she just recently began as a narrator. “All birders start out knowing nothing – you should never turn away. Through the kindness and education from other birders, you get better at the birding game.” What is the best perk of her job? “It gives me an opportunity to get to know a lot of residents I would never come in contact with.” See you on board, Sue!

authentic Mexican cuisine highlighting the staples of Latin cooking: rice, corn, beef and chicken. Dishes included Chile Verde, Snapper Vera Cruz, Beef Enchiladas, and Fajitas. When it came to the side dishes, the chefs did not disappoint with their offerings of the traditional Mexican rice: Arroz a la Mexicana along with Pappas Fritos, Frijoles Charro, and grilled Polenta. Diners found the food to be spiced to their liking with full flavor but little to no heat. Jose Medina and his “Caribbean
Sounds Trio” brought smiles around the room as they filled the Crystal with the sounds of Mexico. The trio played their guitars tableside while singing in harmony and inviting participation from the diners. The enthusiastic staff of the Crystal joined in on the fun with sombreros, maracas and spectacular service. Even the Crystal’s famous limitless dessert buffet was influenced by the fiesta! The standard offering of pies, cookies and cakes was enhanced with the addition of Churros filled with strawberry and caramel filling. These delicious treats are a fried Mexican pastry coated with sugar and cinnamon. A decadent sampling of flan was also available. Many residents stayed after the completion of their meal to enjoy the excellent music while sipping on Aguas Frescas- Watermelon, Pineapple and Citrus Fruit Drinks. As always, diners left the Crystal full and happy! Ole!

elebration! was the place to be November 9th.
The excitement spilled out from the Church Auditorium. Dawn Boren, emcee, started the program off with a warm welcome. Also on stage entertaining were several of Shell Point’s very own entertainment groups; The Ballroom Dance Club, Tone Chimes, Line Dancers, Rollicking Recorderists and Jazz N Stuff all took center stage to share their talents. Many residents saw their smiling face on the slideshow that portrayed “A Day in the Life at Shell Point.” Gift baskets were raffled off throughout the day and several residents left the event with great prizes. Everyone enjoyed visiting over 100 volunteer and activity group booths. The booths were full of information and creative displays. Some booths told a story, some solicited new members to join, some showed off a year’s worth of achievements, some handed out treats, some played games, many showed off arts and crafts, but all showed their Shell Point spirit. Most importantly, the booths were manned by group participants that exchanged information with their neighbors. Health Care Services transformed their area into the Health Care Services Sweet Shop themed with 50s-era decorations. Sales and Marketing called their area “Telling the Shell Point Story.” They collected basic survey information to use for possible future story ideas for Shell Point Life and SPTV. Sales staff shared information about moving into and living at Shell Point. President, Mr. Dys, The Legacy Foundation, Information Services and Shell Point specialty doctors were on hand to answer questions from residents. Outdoors, the sounds of the John Hedges Jazz Quartet floated over the many Shell Point department booths set up around the Church grounds. Geraci Travel and Country Inn & Suites joined in on the fun. The Hospitality department served up delightful food. Also outside, the Pottery Studio and Woodshop demonstrated their arts. Of course, the strolling juggler was a delight and happily stopped to pose for many pictures. A big thanks for making the Celebration! so special. It certainly was an eyes-wide-open look at “A Day In the Life at Shell Point!”

“Many of the booths were decorated and created a lot of interest in that particular area,” said Mary Franklin, resort services manager. “For instance, the health care group put together a great 1950’s style soda fountain called the Health Care Sweet Shop, which was a big hit!” Staff dressed in poodle skirts and letter jackets and served residents ice cream while telling them about the many services available to them such as the medical center, behavioral health, home care, assisted living, and skilled nursing to name just a few. The Health Care group was one of the winners selected by the Court Reps who voted on the creativity of the displays. This group won the “Celebrate Good Times” award, which was given for best staff enthusiasm and engaging the residents. The “Best Representation” Award was given to the Grounds department for their outstanding and educational display. The “Looking Good” Award for best visual display was given to the Sales, Marketing and Communication department for their area, which featured an old-time airplane theme with model planes suspended in front of a background of white clouds on a blue sky background. A sign with an old bi-plane pulling a banner read: “Telling the Shell Point Story” helped set the theme. This event was indeed a celebration of the fulfilling lifestyle found at Shell Point!

Moonlight Over
Moonlight Over Venice brought residents from across Shell Point together for music, food and a chance to meet new neighbors. Although the weather was threatening earlier in the day, it ended up being a beautiful October evening and many residents took advantage of tables with a gorgeous view of the sunset both outdoors and inside the Grand Cypress Room.
Fantastic music provided by Paul Rozmus and Steve Anthony complemented the amazing Italian snacks and desserts. Both the upstairs and downstairs levels of the Commons were decorated to feel like the party was held in Venice, Italy complete with grapes, Italian flags and even the Leaning Tower of Pisa. New friends were made and fun times with neighbors are surely what residents will remember about this elegant event.
