Original Research Proposal To what extent do Technological developments in production and distribution impact on Illustration? One of the key aspects of my literary and visual investigation concerned the way in which technological development has resulted in a mass reproduction and distribution of fairy tales. Thus, drawing me to this question. The subject here is primarily visuals, with regards to the effects of advancements in technology, which was something I did want to further consider due to coming across research and theory based upon the need for fairy tale illustrations and additionally, commonly used colours and their connotations. I feel as though an extensive amount of research could be undertaken in relation to this theme and this will in turn enable me to produce a much more informed and exhaustive investigation. Finally, I want to mention the fact that I have really enjoyed this line of enquiry this year, and would therefore like to take it forward into COP3.

New Research Topic Semiotics and Simplification WHY? • Interested in shape-based imagery •

Explored this to some extent throughout practice so far • Will enjoy producing practical work • More relevant to my current practice

Shape-based Imagery

Initial Research - Semiotics Visible Signs: An Introduction to Semiotics in the Visual Arts by David Crow Key Points: • Semiotics = the study of signs and symbols • The ‘interpretant’ is not fixed – meaning can vary depending on reader and their background • Certain signs deeply embedded in our visual language – can now improvise around basic shape without losing meaning • Motivation - used to denote how much the signifier describes the signified

Thoughts & Ideas What Am I Investigating?

• Is meaning lost through simplification? • Is meaning found through simplification? • How is meaning changed through simplification? • When is a thing not a thing?
