5A1 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the aesthetic, cultural, historical, technological, social, political or other contexts relevant to individual subject disciplines. (Knowledge and understanding) (Research / critical awareness)
I carried out a substantial amount of research in which to inform my written and practical investigation. Mostly looking into our sociocultural environment as well as psychoanalysis of fairy tales through a combination of books, only articles and also films. This is evidenced on my blog and within my essay bibliography as well as in set study tasks.
Very good
5A2 Demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between the theoretical and practical contexts of their own creative concerns. (Knowledge and understanding) (problem analysis/definition)
Synthesis between my theoretical and practical work is evident throughout my project and is evidence in my blog, the visual evaluation at the end of my essay and also within Study Task 9evaluation of synthesis. Research carried out for my essay proceeded to drive my practical work.
Very Good
5B1 Evidence the ability to use logic, reasoning and critical judgement to analyse ideas from a range of primary and secondary sources. (Cognitive skills) (Critical awareness)
This is heavily evidenced within the written element of my project- the 3000 essay. Here I used contextual research found (primary) and also the practical investigation alongside this (secondary) to critically analyse and explore the subject of fairy tales. This is also evidence in analysis of theoretical texts, including Study Task 1 and 2.
Very Good
5C1 Evidence the capacity for undertaking practical and theoretical research that demonstrates an informed application of critical, effective and testable processes.
This is most predominately evidenced within the Very Good exploration of my initial sketches (on blog) and my visual journal. I used key points and quotes from my research to generate ideas for my practical work and carried out this investigation using a multitude of different processes and techniques, including line, shape, colour, texture and collage.
(Practical and professional skills) (research)
5D1 Organise and carry out selfdirected projects and communicate outcomes through written and other appropriate forms. (Key transferable skills) (professionalism / technical competence / visual quality)
This is evidenced in the overall submission of the whole project. I have effectively carried out a selfdirected enquiry into a specific subject matter, evidenced in the form of contextual research, a written essay, a proposal for COP3 and also in all of the provided study tasks.
Very Good
Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module. Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document and post the PDF as your final post on your OUIL501 blog. At the start of the year I was unsure about what subject matter I wanted to explore throughout COP2 and rushed a little in terms of finding an idea. I started off wanting to look into visuals as a form of communication due to my interest in symbols, semiotics and reduced imagery. However, after researching into this topic more, I realised I wasn’t particularly enjoying it and this is something I wanted to make sure happened this year. I’ve noticed throughout my practice the importance of enjoying the work I am producing in order for it to be of a good standard. I then proceeded to change my idea to fairy tales, a very playful theme but one that I knew could be thoroughly research due to underlying themes and messages. I am usually not particularly fond of researching however, I found reading into this subject extremely interesting and came across an extensive number of possible angles I could take my project in. One key text that drove my project forward was Bruno Bettelheim’s ‘The Uses of Enchantment’ (1997) which considers the psychoanalysis of fairy tales and helped to shape the basis of my investigation. Alongside other theoretical research carried out through reading, online articles and watching films based around my subject, this informed and drove my investigation for both the written element and practical side. Throughout COP this year I have realised how useful it is to thoroughly research before jumping into an idea and how much easier this makes things, as I didn’t do this very well last year. This time round I was able to make an extensive essay plan of points I had found, and this made writing my essay and finding a basis for my visual journal a lot more relaxed. Surprisingly, I have really enjoyed this year’s project and although the visual journal seemed daunting at the beginning, I was able to find a focus and began to have fun with it. I have been trying to explore the process of paper cut a lot more within my personal practice and so the first half of my journal uses this technique. Another reason for this was because I wanted to produce outcomes that looked contemporary but also had a hand-made feel to them, reflecting the traditionalism of the subject matter. I also really enjoy simplified and reduced imagery and tried to incorporate this into the outcomes which was an interesting task as fairy tales possess such a depth of noticeable and underlying themes. So, trying to communicate this in a single image proved somewhat difficult, expressing how I have challenged myself this year. The second half of my journal looks into the way fairy tales have been constantly and repeatedly reinterpreted and modified over the years. I tried to portray this idea by taking an image and drawing it exhaustively, altering it slightly from the previous outcome. I used the image of a wolf- taken from the story of Little Red Riding Hood and used a multitude of different processes and techniques, including pencil, fine liner, papercut and digital methods, to create the resolutions, making sure to be more playful and experimental. I am actually really happy with the outcomes.
In terms of the written side of this project, I feel as though I have done a much better job than I did last year. I really enjoy the process of writing, or have in the past however, have always found it difficult to bring in contextual references and theoretical evidence. This year was a lot easier due to the amount of research carried out before-hand. Once I had the points to make, the actual writing of the essay was pretty straightforward and I now feel I know how to properly incorporate contextual evidence, making sure to reference and cite correctly. The only thing I struggled a little was finding relevant images to analyse due to my project being more about the content found in the language of the narratives and how this affects our sociocultural environment. Next year however, I have proposed to look again at fairy tales, but more predominately at the visual side of spectrum, enabling to address the issue of image analysis. Overall, I have quite enjoyed this module and feel as though I have proceeded to produce a somewhat strong investigation into the subject matter of fairy tales, and aim to further explore this next year.
