FB 11/10/13 “Julie, we do not follow anyone’s equation, we save every animal that we can. We also do not use the term “no-kill”, because all animal welfare organizations do have to euthanize in certain circumstances. We use the term “Live release rate”, and most years for us that rate is 100%. Fortunately, for the past 20 years we are very proud to say that it is extremely rare that we do euthanize an animal, and when we do it is to end that animal’s suffering. I hope that answers your question.”

FB 11/11/13 “The No-Kill policy was formulated among a number of animal welfare http://www.animalallies.net/ organizations nationally. Nathan has been a strong spokesperson for it in the upper Midwest. He did not help us implement it at our facilities. No-Kill means that a shelter https://www.facebook.com/animalallies achieves and maintains a live release rate of 90% or better. That may not sound strong enough but many shelters across the country routinely euthanize healthy animals due to capacity issues. We adopted the goal and achieved it in 2010 and have sustained each year since. We prefer to call our efforts Zero Euthanasia. We partner with a number of shelters in our region who have not been able to achieve that goal for a variety of reasons-mostly due to lack of financial resources. Our programs and services and the generosity of our community allow us to help lead the way for other shelters in our region. Hope that helps. Thank you for asking.”

FB 11/11/13 “Hi Julie - to give a very simplistic answer our philosophies & practices http://www.barringtonpaw.org don’t align exactly to any of the national organizations. We did not work with Nathan & he has not assisted here - though we used a lot of his information when we were https://www.facebook.com/pages/Barrington-Partnership-for-Animal-Welfare/148357895212000 working to reverse the town’s euthanasia practices. Just as with all the better known groups - ASPCA, HSUS, PETA, Alley Cats, etc there are things we agree with Nathan (& most others) on & things we do differently. We deal primarily in strays ( not owner surrender) and the vast majority are not highly adoptable by many shelter’s standards but we work to achieve a positive outcome for each & every one. We also have very few stray animals in our town & for the most part the majority of owners are very responsible so we are not dealing with the same volume as most communities. As a result we are extending our reach to neighboring areas to assist with the ongoing cat problems.” FB 11/12/13 “Julie, Thank you for your inquiry. 11/19/13 Talked on phone. No-kill/open admission. Roughly follow Nathan http://www.ashelterofhope.com/ Winograd’s equation. Then I wanted to clarify if they turned away animals and she hung up on me. I tried to call back no answer. On their facebook page they like NKN. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Allegany-County-Animal-Shelter/116239105116622#!/pages/Allegany-County-Animal-Shelter/116239105116622 11/22/13 email: “I’m with the Allegany County Animal Shelter in Cumberland, MD. FB 11/12/13 “Hi Julie, Thank you for the support. We do follow SOME of the no-kill http://kirbyanimalcareservices.webs.com/ equation, as far as implementing TNR programs and transfer-rescue programs...pretty much whatever it takes to save our animals here. We don’t formally do anything with https://www.facebook.com/KirbyAnimalShelter Nathan Winograd, however, and we DO believe that pet overpopulation exists, so while there is much merit in the programs and creative life-saving techniques that the no-kill nation promotes, which we believe that ALL shelters SHOULD embrace, we do understand that much of the responsibility still falls to the public who has created the problem in the first place.” FB 11/11/13 “I actually had not heard about Nathan until after we had already http://www.seagoville.us/index.aspx?nid=127 implemented No Kill but many of the things I researched going into this ended up being on his list of things to do. I wish someone would have pointed me in his direction before https://www.facebook.com/seagovilleanimalshelter I tried to reinvent the wheel! I first met Nathan at a local No Kill conference here in the Dallas area and he invited me to speak at the National No Kill Conference last year. That was quite an experience and I was able to meet several other shelter directors who I could swap ideas with. It was very enlightening. We do follow the most of the steps in Nathan’s program, however, some are difficult to apply in our situation. We have maintained a 97% or better live release rate for 3 years now and we have received a lot of support from our City and community as well as the animal welfare community with our mission. I really have to say that the lion’s share of the work is handled by our volunteers who I just can’t say enough about. They truly deserve the credit for making our No Kill mission a success. “ 8

[No answer yet as of 12/1/2013.] Did find a reference they follow the NKE on another http://www.fspca.org website: http://www.direct.nokillnetwork.org/d/Virginia/Fluvanna-SPCA-(Troy)~2152 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fluvanna-SPCA/166990030925 FB 11/12/13 “Hi Julie, Thanks for the note. We followed the “no-kill equation” long http://seattleanimalshelter.org/ before it had a name. The shelter has always pushed for implementing innovative, progressive programs in the municipal, open-door environment. Our council, mayors, https://www.facebook.com/SeattleAnimalShelter and supporters long ago took a “gamble” on low-cost spay and neuter, volunteer/foster programs, community outreach, etc. I think we were just before our time. Nathan Winograd is a great advocate and has been to our facility to check it out. That was several years ago, and we were already achieving save rates around 85%. We are above 90% now, and I’m happy to chat about what it has taken to make that change. Feel free to contact me directly if you have questions. I think all the concepts for saving more lives are well known. They are just hard to implement if you don’t have the right support and enough dollars”. from Volunteer Programs and Fundraising Note: There is also the Humane Society for Seattle/King County in Seattle. It is unclear which shelter or if both are being referred to by the NKAC’s list of “communities”.

11/19/13 email: “Julie: First I would like to thank you for taking the time to contact us with http://www.ebhs.org your questions. We are an organization that is very proud of our work and welcome the opportunity to answer questions for those in our animal community. We are one of only a https://www.facebook.com/EBHS1964 handful of no kill facilities in the state of WI and are proud of our achievement and strive to be a leader in animal care and shelter standards. Although Nathan Winograd did not help us implement our current program, we do follow his ideas and thoughts and feel they are in integral part of any no kill facility. The components he recommends are key parts of our program although at this time we do not have them all in place. For example, we do not have a TNR program nor are we able to offer low cost spay/neuters to the community at this time. We do have a wonderful program called Abbey’s fund that helps with spay/neuters of bully breed dogs. Thanks to the wonderful shelters in our area, organizations such as Lost Dogs WI , Badgerland Rescue and Transport, and AWARE - WI just to name a few, we are able to improve redemption numbers, work with other rescues and save more lives through networking and working with rescues. We also provide affordable and often free training advice to pet owners doing whatever we can to keep animals in their homes and out of the shelter system. We have a compassionate shelter director who embraces the no kill philosophy and leads our team to grow and be a leader in this industry. We also have a very strong volunteer base which has proven to be invaluable for us at Elmbrook. Volunteers and/or staff have attended the No More Homeless Pets conference and other seminars in order to stay abreast of how we can continue to save more lives in our area and surrounding areas. We have only been no kill for a short time and strive to improve in all areas of the no kill equation. Again these are all key components but we continue to work daily towards meeting additional goals including a stronger foster program, increased training and support for pet owners and other key pieces of the no kill philosophy as presented by Nathan Winograd.”

AVHS saves all healthy and treatable animals, aiming to maintain a Live Release Rate of 95% or above. We do not close our doors to any companion animal in need. However, we are https://www.facebook.com/pages/Aspen-Animal-Shelter/167452396659878#!/pages/Aspen-Animal-Shelter/167452396659878 able to operate a no-kill facility sans a foster program, as well as a few other components that seem to play a role in Nathan’s equation, so I will answer your question by stating that the Aspen Animal Shelter follows our own rhythm and is also aware of, and impressed by, Nathan Winograd’s work.”

11/23/13 email: “We follow Nathan Winograd’s no-kill equation but have been doing it http://www.co.clear-creek.co.us/index.aspx?nid=83 all along. We are fortunate to have a county-owned and managed facility that is able to function this way. It’s possible with the support of people in the community who are Clear Creek/Gilpin Co. Animal Shelter (Charlie’s Place) animal lovers. I stress to our county commissioners that we get adoption fees on https://www.facebook.com/charliesplaceshelter transfers-in that greatly offset the labor costs associated with caring for the dogs. Our non-profit, Friends of Charlie’s place, pays for any medical expenses the dogs might have. We do have residents who are unhappy with us supporting dogs from other places but when we do the math it is hard to argue with the logic. We are no kill by most definitions. We only euthanize in cases where the dog is considered a public safety hazard (usually because of unpredictable aggression towards people) or has no quality of life due to advanced illness.I update our Facebook page as much as possible with success stories to help with PR. We want to keep doing what we are doing.” from Shelter Manager FB 11/10/13 “I asked our executive director who is more familiar with the details of http://www.humanesociety.biz/new_main.htm no-kill “equations”. Certainly the No-Kill Equation contains elements that are essential to any community undertaking and achieving the effort to build a no-kill community. NHS has elements of the Equation and has utilized a myriad of strategies to achieve the success we have, and no question many/most of the fundamentals are found within the equation. The Equation is a wonderful place to begin, there are also great models and resources available through the ASPCA and their Community Initiatives/Community Partnerships/Project Orange as well as Maddie’s Fund.I hope this is helpful, If there is anything else that I can do, please don’t hesitate to ask. Cheers” FB 11/20/13 “Julie, it’s best to attend our Pets Alive Tour, a behind the scenes tour which we hold once a month so you can get up to date information on our agency. We also have information and stats on our website, www.nevadahumanesociety.org and on our Facebook page under the About link. We do follow this equation but we have also take into consideration our needs in Washoe County. Last year we officially became one of the safest communities in the US for homeless pets. We take in more animals per capita than any other region of this size, and are always looking to improve, finding more ways to get the animals out into the community to find them loving homes, and finding more ways to fundraise. We hope this answers your questions and we recommend you visit the sites mentioned above, as well as attend our tour. This is a conversation best held in person at the shelter; it’s tough to do over social media as inquiries are most quickly responded to via phone or in person, simply due to the overwhelming number of inquiries we get via email and online. Thank you!”
