Shepherdstown , WV Shepherdstown may be West Virginia’s oldest town, but its vibe is fresh. Maybe that’s because it’s just an hour from metropolitan centers of Washington, D.C., and Baltimore? Maybe it’s the creative scene? Shepherdstown nurtures a buzzedabout community of artists. Ultimately, it’s a balance of both, as Budget Travel editors and readers agreed in 2013, when they named Shepherdstown one of America’s “Coolest Small Towns.” For travelers, that sort of endorsement packs the promise that here, you can discover it all – whether you’re cycling the historic C&O Canal towpath or kayaking

along the forested banks of the Potomac River; whether you’re downtown enjoying a delicious meal at an original restaurant or browsing works by regional artists. Perched on a spectacular bluff overlooking the Potomac River, you will find the Bavarian Inn, a European-inspired boutique resort that offers comfort, elegance, and world-class food and service. This 72-room historic inn has been undergoing a renaissance with the addition of a scenic infinity pool and the brand-new Bavarian Brothers Brewery featuring a brewpub, lounge, and outdoor beer garden. Above all, you must experience the performing arts in Shepherdstown. Shepherd University anchors the scene with its Performing Arts Series, an annual line-up that might feature a blues master one month and the Appalachian Heritage Festival the next. Riding the Rails in West Virginia In the highlands of West Virginia, there’s a spiderweb of scenic rail lines used to haul passengers to some of West Virginia’s most remote and picturesque locations. Once used to haul timber and coal off the Appalachians and into small rural towns, these rail lines have been preserved for a new purpose: entertaining tens of thousands of visitors each year.

The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad, a company founded in 1997, and its portfolio of West Virginia MountainRail Adventures, offer train rides from three historic depots in West Virginia - Elkins, Cass, and Durbin. While relatively close in distance, the three depots offer a variety of train rides ranging from 2-hour day trips to overnight destinations, wine trains, and special holiday venues. And Elkins isn’t the only destination. If you’re looking for a true mountain getaway, the Cass Scenic Railroad and Durbin may be the destination for you. The Cass Scenic Railroad is a steam locomotive treasure and the home of a former timber hauling railroad and logging community. With more than 100-year-old company houses, remnants of a saw mill, and the largest collection of geared steam ‘Shay’ locomotives, the Cass Scenic Railroad is a household name for West Virginians and a place truly unlike anything else. “Cass is a treasure - there’s really no other way to explain it. You wake up hearing the steam train whistle echo off the hills as you sit on the porch of a company home enjoying a cup of coffee. It’s a beautiful start to the day that just keeps getting better,” says Gunnoe, who was an avid railroad enthusiast and native West Virginian who visited the railroad years prior to working for the company.

Day trips remain a popular option, but weekend getaways are increasingly popular because they give visitors the chance to experience the area, form a friendship with local tourism folks, and connect with nature.

The surprise Confederate attack was successful, chasing Federal soldiers north of Middletown. However, the Union under

Museum is VMI’s Middle Name

Well, not really—it’s actually Virginia Military Institute. But the colorful and rich history of the nation’s first state sponsored military college provides plenty of artifacts and art to fill the galleries of the three museums owned and operated by the academically renowned VMI. Jackson Memorial Hall

upwardly mobile Victorian professor at VMI. By 1861 the world knew him as ”Stonewall.” But the house is not about his Civil War exploits; it’s about the life of Thomas and Mary Anna on the eve of war. Knowledgeable and engaging guides lead you on a journey of their time. Tours begin every half hour. Before you leave make sure you spend some time in one of the cutest museum shops in Virginia! And check out the potato scarecrow in the garden! Eighty miles north of Lexington, right off I-81, you will find the third VMI Museum: the Virginia Museum of the Civil War at New Market Battlefield State Historical Park. Here the VMI Cadets engaged in Virginia Museum of the Civil War

Located in Jackson Memorial Hall, the four galleries of the VMI Museum reveal amazing artifacts. Don’t be startled when you see a horse in the main gallery. Little Sorrel, Stonewall Jackson’s mounted warhorse is one of only a dozen historically significant mounted horses in the world. The world-class Henry Stewart Antique Firearms Collection has over 400 rare and one-of –a kind firearms—like the air gun carried by Lewis and Clark. General George Patton’s famous shiny helmet and his personal M1 rifle are here. Just a few blocks from VMI is the Stonewall Jackson House, a part of the VMI Museum System since 2011. When Thomas Jackson purchased the house in 1858, he was an

pitched battle on May 15, 1864. The farm of Jacob and Sarah Bushong, where the battle took place, has been painstakingly restored. One room of the farmhouse depicts the quiet family parlor while another room graphically reveals the drama of the house serving as a hospital immediately after the battle. The Virginia Museum of the Civil War takes you through all four years of conflict in the state—impressive! All three museums are open 9 to 5 daily.

Virginia’s Favorite Road Trip For more than 250 years visitors have been making the journey to what is now Bath County in the mountains of Virginia west of the Shenandoah Valley. Back then visitors arrived on horseback or by covered wagon to soak in the healing waters of the natural mineral springs. Today, travelers arrive by motorcycle, sports car or the family minivan. The journey is just as memorable and the unspoiled mountain views haven’t changed at all. Bath County is a favorite destination for a road trip or as a hub for scenic drives. The peaceful and winding back roads offer breathtaking mountain scenery with little traffic and not a single stoplight in the entire county. While scenic drives are a favorite pastime here, hiking, biking and paddling are also great ways to enjoy the fresh air and scenery. Approximately half of Bath County is in the national forest so there is no shortage of trails. Hikers are likely to spot wildflowers, birds and wildlife as they trek through the mountains. The Jackson and Cowpasture rivers along with other small streams wind through the county. Checking out the views from water level is a great way to spend a day. With a full day of adventure and sightseeing in the rearview mirror, a delicious meal and cozy accommodations will make your visit unforgettable. Bath County is famous for its hospitality. The lodging options are as unique as the county itself. There are no cookie-cutter chain hotels here. Options include a grand resort, independent motels, rental cabins and numerous B&B Inns, each with its own historic charm. Bath County is a genuine four-season destination. Because of the elevation, fall foliage arrives a little earlier here than the rest of Virginia. The famous scenic drives take on a new shade of brilliance. During the winter, try snowshoeing or skiing. These are just a few of the memories you’ll take home of genuine “Made in Bath County” experiences.

During the Civil War the Shenandoah Valley was of great strategic importance to the Southern cause. The Valley formed a natural corridor of invasion so that Confederate armies moving northward into its lower portion gained access to the northern cities of Baltimore, Philadelphia, and the capital city of Washington as well. Also important to Confederate strategy, however, was the degree to which the region could serve as a source of foodstuffs and forage for Southern armies. Thus, in the context of the Civil War, the Shenandoah Valley is often referred to as “the Breadbasket of the Confederacy.
