Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival and From again! Bach to Bernstein, the 26th Annual Bach Festival explores a wide array of classical music this June. Worldclass soloists join Artistic Director Ken Nafziger, the Festival Orchestra, and Festival Choir for eight days of orchestral masterworks and dynamic chamber music. Works of Bach and Telemann open the festival, and then the festival traverses through the ages with iconic works of Beethoven, Vaughan Williams, and William Walton. The centerpiece of the festival is a mostly-Bernstein concert featuring West Side Story Suite, Chichester Psalms, and excerpts from Candide, all in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival is a week-long summer music festival devoted to promoting an appreciation and understanding of the music of Bach and a featured composer, country, era or people. The festival takes place on the campus of Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Three featured concerts with orchestra, soloists, and choir; six chamber music concerts; a Leipzig Service; and open rehearsals infuse the Valley with unequaled musical richness. Additional offerings include internships, youth programs, Road Scholar (Elderhostel), and the Virginia Baroque Performance Academy. The Festival, widely recognized for its artistic excellence, has been named the “jewel in Harrisonburg’s crown” by the Virginia Commission for the Arts. By David McCormick

Augusta Military Academy Museum The Augusta Military Academy Museum is located in Fort Defiance, Virginia. The Museum Building sits among stately old trees and expansive lawns on the grounds of the now-closed military academy. Fort Defiance is located eight miles north of Staunton on U.S. Route 11, the historic Valley Pike. Charles S. Roller founded Augusta Male Academy in 1874. In the Civil War, he served in Confederate General J. E. B. Stuart’s cavalry and during Reconstruction, he was elected to the Virginia General Assembly, the state’s legislative body. He introduced military instruction and discipline to his students by 1879, and changed the name of the school to Augusta Military Academy in 1890. AMA was the first of several secondary-level, military academies in Virginia, and one of the first schools in the country to adopt a Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program. The school had a major educational, social, and economic impact on this area of the Shenandoah Valley for over 100 years. The museum building was built in the 1870s by Roller for his family. The original house has been completely and carefully renovated. By using photographs taken in the 1880s as guides, the restoration/ renovation returned the exterior of the house as nearly as was possible to its original appearance. The renovation of this Augusta County landmark was accomplished by hundreds of alumni and friends of the Augusta Military Academy through the non-profit AMA Alumni Foundation, Inc. From the magnificent Peaks of Otter along the Blue Ridge Parkway, to the quaint streets of historic downtown, to the shores of Smith Mountain Lake - Bedford offers outdoor adventure and historical treasures, making it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway or your next vacation destination! Perhaps most notably, Bedford is home to the National D-Day Memorial, a deeply moving tribute to the American and Allied forces that fought in the largest amphibious invasion of all time. The Memorial overlooks the community that suffered the greatest losses per capita of any in the United States; it creates a solemn atmosphere for veterans and visitors alike to gain insight and learn more about the events that shaped history. The Memorial holds numerous events throughout the year, including veteran recognition ceremonies on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Armed Forces Day 5K in May, outdoor concerts, and family events such as the 1940s-style Family Day Festival each July. And of course there is a special commemoration held each June 6 to mark the anniversary of D-Day. Please visit www.dday.org for more information. Historic Centertown Bedford offers a variety of art galleries, shops, antiques, and restaurants that are within easy walking distance from each other in a charming atmosphere of 19th Century buildings. Guided tours are available and special events are held throughout the year please visit www.poplarforest.org for more information. Smith Mountain Lake has been called the “Jewel of the Blue Ridge” and makes up the southern border of Bedford.
