City Flipping
National Chiao Tung University Fundatmentals of Design Spring 2019 Individual Project Instructor: Chi-Yi Chang Instruction The basic idea of Bauhaus is " Form Follow Function". The representative architect Mies van der Rohe applies his famous aphorism "less is more" on his design works. He exhausted to put the right things in the right place. In recent years, since the major centers have flourished, the population distribution has already crossed the normal line. I try to analyze the design principles of Mies' works and to solve the disguised problems in society.
1
Interactive Scale Try to analyze the interactive relation among the space inside the Brick House designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Then, I enlarge the scale and address with social issue by analogizing the floor plan to a city size.
Concept Portray the floor plan of Brick House. And illustrate the most obvious and continuous structure as the axis.
The cross structure can be clearly seen after separating the axis. We can discuss the possibility of interaction in the individual space.

Equal Area Analysis I assigned typical Bauhaus colors to every element from t h e i n s i d e o u t : c o re - re d , transition-blue, surroundingyellow. Fix area, and get a height from length. We can obtain the extent people acting in the building.
3
Scale Up Enlarging the scale of former work, I compare it to the population distribution of a city. Since every mature city rely on central axis, we can imagine the axis as the structure of urban development. The below side is downtown, and the upper side is residential district.
Social Issue As booming, the distibuition of population is increasingly concentrated in cities (red), resulting in uneven development between urban and rural areas (yellow). I tried to solve this problem by flipping the axis of city.
Accroding to the Brick house's floor plan, the right side of axis is a functional space, such as kitchen. So I took it likened to a power station (above). The left side is public space, so I liken it to a factory under a large population flow (down).
4
Solving Approach Step1 Add functional components and flatten the axis of the city. Step2 Lowering functional components means a city should base on commodity industry. Step3 Flip the flattened axis. Shifting half of the population to develop basic industries is necessary for balancing development. Step4 Emphasize the process and instability caused by city flipping. Using pure wood and iron wire as materials to represent the emphasis on commodity industries.

National Taiwan University Civil Engineering Capstone Challenge Group Poject (4 people) Winter 2018 Instructor: Masatoshi TOMITA, HervĂŠ CAPART
Instruction This instruction is to explore the space created by human activities, and to design a roof for working place while resolving conflicts between different users. This process deeply fascinated me. I mainly work for space observation, exterior design and structural design. And I desire to create a harmonious space interaction through this instruction.
7
Interactive Scale Analysising the interaction between people at the working place could extends to the space created by this activity. Discuss the interaction between space and space, such as the communication of space, the stretching of space and the separation of space. And find out the possibility of harmonious coexistence among space.
Subject The problems we want to solve are the lack of rain shielding facilities and the allocation of basement space to address with the disorder between construction space and parking lines. It is forced t o o c c u p y m o re p a r k i n g space when it rains.
Since we lack a large working place, we only can use the underground parking space of the department building for construction.

Site Analysis The entrance to the basement is at the driveway next to the department building. After passing an uncovered slope, we can arrive the parking space in the basement. Keep going straight and we can reach the working space. Turning right, it is the parking space. It is easy to confuse people who have never been.
Mutual Harmony Our initial concept is to integrate with the environment to reduce the sense of the conflict caused by huge roof.
Minimization We want to keep the most parking spaces and minimize the working plane. Our idea is to stackw the plane upwards.

Feedback from Workers
Additional Concepts
It's moist and gloomy in basement, so they can't make discussion in comfortable.
Increasing natural lighting to reduce light shielding caused by large roof.
It's not easy to set out large materials.
Increase the privacy for discussion place.
It is inconvenient since the basement is not directly connected to department building.
Stretching the volume vertically to increase extra usable space and enable ventilation

Support
Problem and Solution Our initial idea was to use suspension system, but it would put a huge strain on the wall. So we switched to truss system to reduce the strain. Flat roof uses gridwork system to increase its stiffness, since this system can effectively decrease the thickness of wood slab.
Materials and Light The site is in the northern hemisphere, so the sunshine falls on the right side of the building in the afternoon. In order to save energy, reduce carbon and increase natural lighting, we decided the right part changed to transparent material.
Moving Way We connect independent spaces through its interaction. You can reach the roof from the basement via stairs. Now you have two options. One is to go up the stairs to reach the top roof. The other is to arrive at the discussion place or enter the department building via walkway.
11
Space created by people's activities. We can understand the interaction among space by analysis.

All about Structube
Architecture Institue of Japan Students Summer Seminar (SSS) Group Poject (5 people) Summer 2018 Critic: Masao Saito, Yi-Husan Tu
Instruction The main topic of this seminar is that we should create variability by accumulating small units. This kind of small unit must be a combination of no more than two materials. We need to combine through our own connection method with aesthetic preception. Strive to develop human-scale space under this restriction.
13
Interactive Scale Focus on interaction between same material but different property first. And challange to interact with human-scale beings.
Concept We challange to form a humanscale structure with soft materials. Assemble these units with variety. Express transparency by organic shape.
Material We choose transparent plastic tube, since plastic tube can completely express the characteristic about soft and beauty.
Form Assemble tubes of different d i a m e t e r, a n d c r e a t e t h e connection with multiple direction. A l s o , i n s p i re d b y Yo s h i m u r a Pattern, we want to create Form Resistant Structure.

Scale Up When we scaled up components from height 18" to 70", we encountered many problems. Especially it completely appeared disadvantages of soft material: when the length of the member is doubled, the stiffness would be less than half. After many considerations, we only reserved the part of columns. Therefore, this work is presented in a high-permeability and bionic framework.

Alone Time
National Taiwan University Fundamentals of Architectural Design Spring 2019 Individual Project Instructor: Fu-Yuan Su, Ying-Chieh Chan
Instruction This instruction is for us to experience and understand "space design has no standard answer". We should create possibilities from a mere wooden board. And we could realize the relationship between body scale and furniture through the process of production and a particular situation.
17
Interactive Scale When the scale retur ns to the personal scale, talking to ourselves is necessary. Although being alone does not mean loneliness, personal emotions are still easy to fluctuate when alone. Therefore, by interacting with the tranquil light and listening to ourselves, we can comfort our emotions and clam down gradually.
Concept Studies have pointed out that when someone is more close to ground, he would obtain the more sense of security. So the concept of this work is to emphasize this process of sitting down by interacting with the furniture.
Moreover, stable and regular light helps calm our emotions. Also, in a more stable mood, the light can promotes us to have a deeper communication with ourselves.

Structural System To steady this work, I use a simple tenon to combine the core. And after fixing the boundary of the core, it would be a strong support.
Presentation To emphasize the process of sitting down, I used a special material - spring. It makes a interaction between this work with user through the spring focre feedback.
Simulate a Situation Going back to home after a whole day social activities, we need time alone. When we take a rest and sit on the chair, the warm light shines at the same time. It will have a deepest conversation imminently.
