WEDNESDAY
Red Hot Chili Peppers w/ Deerhoof and Jack Irons
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 7:30 p.m. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ wild, heavy, air-kicking funk-rock sounded like little else when the group debuted it in the early ’80s, and in the three decades since they’ve done their part to make sure it stayed that way. Without ever completely reinventing themselves, they’ve evolved consistently since their earliest albums, refining the nihilistic funk-metal of their George Clintonproduced 1985 album, Freaky Styley, into tighter, more radio-friendly tunes on their commercial breakthrough albums Mother’s Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik—albums that established their long working relationship with producer Rick Rubin. From there they continued to try on new sounds, embracing the spirit of ’90s modern rock on their 1995 oddity One Hot Minute (their only album with guitarist Dave Navarro) and then scoring a string of hit ballads with the breezier records that followed, including their 1999 commercial apex, Californication. Like any long-running band, they’ve seen their slumps—the group followed their massive 2006 double album Stadium Arcadium with 2011’s completely forgettable I’m With You. But their latest album, The Getaway, does what all of the band’s best albums have done: It makes the group sound fresh again. With producer Danger Mouse behind the boards, replacing Rubin after seven albums, the band pays homage to the lush, grandiose rock records of the late ’60s and early ’70s. (Evan Rytlewski) ! The Marcus King Band
Uline Warehouse Stage 8 p.m. The blues will never die as long as groups like The Marcus King Band are here to keep it alive. The 21-year-old South Carolinian and his namesake sextet pick up where Johnny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan leave off, producing a smooth, bluesy, guitar-driven sound. Government Mule’s Warren Haynes, who produced and appears on the band’s latest album, is a longtime champion of the group. “I write as a form of therapy, to release my emotions into a musical expression,” King says. “I want people to know they’re not the only ones going through that pain.” And there is plenty of heart in what King describes as the band’s “soul-driven, psychedelic Southern rock.” It’s something the guitarist learned on the road as a pre-teen sideman to his father and fellow bluesman Marvin King. “He’s very much influenced by the blues, but also by jazz, rock, soul music and any timeless genres of music,” Haynes says of the younger King. “He has one of those voices that instantly draws you in, and his guitar playing is an extension of his voice and vice versa.” Marcus King, youthful though he may be, is a blues force to be reckoned with. (Michael Muckian)
The Moody Blues! BMO Harris Pavilion 10 p.m.
! Rolling Stone called them “the Sistine Chapel of popular music,” a group that almost singlehandedly invented the term “progressive rock.” In both cases it’s clear The Moody Blues have made their mark on the music scene and continue to do so decades after the band’s 1964 formation in Birmingham, England. Founders Graeme Edge, Justin Hayward and John Lodge still carry on the Moodies’ name and musical mission. Bringing the 50th anniversary tour of their landmark album Days of Future Passed to Summerfest this year, the performance will mark a milestone in modern music. Recorded in 1967, the album evolved from a request by executives at Decca Records that the Moodies record a rock version of Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (From the New World) to test the label’s new stereo recording facilities. Liking the idea of a rock-classical blend, the band instead followed its own muse, resulting in a “song cycle” concept album that changed the sound of rock music forever. Expect the lush, dreamy sounds of “Nights in White Satin,”“Tuesday Afternoon” and other hits both from the disc and from throughout their career. The songs and the sound have become The Moody Blues’ timeless musical legacy. (Michael Muckian)

Luke Bryan
w/ The Brothers Osbourne
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 7:30 p.m. You’d have to be a cynic not to appreciate the good Luke Bryan has done for his extended family. Taking in his orphaned nieces and nephew a couple years ago to raise along with his and his wife’s own sons, among the other kindnesses he has shown his kin, is a sign of a pretty big heart. Being the currently most successful male soloist on country radio nowadays allows Bryan to raise all those kids in enviable style, but the man himself seems grounded and unaffected. Though his lifestyle and approach to fatherhood may be rooted in tradition, his approach to country isn’t quite. Not long after his national debut in the mid-’00s, Bryan came to be associated with a movement marrying party-hearty lyrics to the infiltration of pop hip-hop and hard arena elements to the music’s usual Southern pride and twang. Hits exemplifying that ruralcentric mash-up such as “All My Friends Say,” “Country Girl (Shake It for Me)” and “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day” have made him an unlikely sex symbol and role model, and he will doubtless deliver an energetic set as he returns to Summerfest’s Amphitheater for his fourth appearance at the festival since 2013. Soul Asylum!
Fishbone
Soul Asylum were the right band at the right time for ’90s alternative radio, and they made an absolute mint during the era. One can’t help but wonder, though, whether all that success ultimately cost them some of their stature. After all, in their ’80s early years they were cult heroes in Minneapolis’ edgy rock scene, viewed by many as the true heirs apparent to the beloved Replacements. Now most people just remember them as the “Runaway Train” band.
Fishbone surfaced with the early ’80s wave of African American artists determined to bust down musical and social barriers. They never became as popular as Living Colour, much less Prince, but they made an indelible impression on the ’80s alternative subculture.
Miller Lite Oasis 5:30 p.m.
Like a lot of material on the band’s blockbuster ’90s albums Grave Dancers Union and Let Your Dim Light Shine, that maudlin song has not aged all that well. Yet the meat of those albums holds up: There’s an urgency and a snap and a sense of humor to frontman Dave Priner’s songs that plays just as well today as it did during the flannel era. The band’s lineup has turned over quite a bit over the last decade. Bassist Karl Mueller died of cancer in 2005 and was replaced for a time by Tommy Stinson of The Replacements. Stinson left the band in 2012, the same year as founding guitarist Dan Murphy did. Prince drummer Michael Bland joined the group in 2005, and he’s left a mark on their sound. With him behind the kit, their 2016 album Change of Fortune is one of the band’s funkiest, most rhythmic records. (Evan Rytlewski)
Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard 4 p.m.
The band was formed by South Central Los Angeles students being bussed to the San Fernando Valley—where they joined with other middle school students. The encounter resulted in a funky collision of R&B and punk that often found expression, early on, in a saxophone-trombone-powered rendition of ska. At the time, “2 Tone” (i.e., integrated) ska bands were the rage in the U.K. as punks explored the fast-tempo predecessor of reggae. Fishbone put a distinctly African American stamp on that music in rollicking stage shows infused with social commentary. The vibe was aptly summed up in their debut single, “Party at Ground Zero,” which insisted good times and upbeat attitudes might save the day in a world on edge. As the ’80s moved on, their music became harder and more guitar heavy. Their album The Reality of My Surroundings (1991) cracked Billboard’s Top 50, but personnel changes—along with changing times—sapped their career momentum. Through it all, Fishbone (including several original members) continued to tour and record. (David Luhrssen)

FRIDAY
Paul Simon w/ Brandi Carlile
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 7:30 p.m. What a joy it is that Paul Simon never retired. The legendary folk singer helped soundtrack a generation with Simon & Garfunkel hits like “The Sound of Silence” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” before launching a long and often surprising solo career that included gambits like 1986’s Graceland, a blockbuster pop album widely credited with sparking American’s interest in world music, and its Latin-influenced 1990 sequel, The Rhythm of the Saints. Although the singer has slowed in his golden years, touring less and recording more sporadically, he’s fallen into a comfortable groove of releasing a new album every half decade or so, including 2006’s Surprise, an electronic-minded collaboration with Brian Eno. Fans looking for something a little more conventional welcomed 2011’s So Beautiful or So What, which Simon composed entirely on an acoustic guitar. It’s his latest record, Stranger to Stranger, however, that feels like a true culmination of his career. It tempers Simon’s electronic leanings with the folk and world music that he’s better known for. Last year Simon also composed some fetching original music for Louis C.K.’s web series, “Horace and Pete,” and guest starred on the show as a bar patron. (Evan Rytlewski)

House of Pain! BMO Harris Pavilion 9:45 p.m.
With its distinctive thump and sampled saxophone squalls, House of Pain’s addictive hit “Jump Around” was an instant smash when it was released in the early ’90s, but it’s since taken on a second life for sports fans—especially here in the Dairyland, where the song is as cherished in some corners of Badgers fandom as “On Wisconsin.” For nearly two decades, the song has blared through the speakers of Camp Randall Stadium while thousands of jumping students literally shake the rafters. In recent years, the Milwaukee Brewers have started playing the track at their games, too. After House of Pain broke up in 1996, a day before their third and final album, the members headed in some odd directions. Everlast reinvented himself as a rapping bluesman, scoring a very-’90s hit with the self-serious 1997 single “What It’s Like,” while DJ Lethal became the turntablist for Limp Bizkit. Ten years after their split, all three members of the group reunited as part of a supergroup called La Coka Nostra, but it was only in 2010 that they officially formed House of Pain. For this tour, the group will be commemorating its 25th anniversary. (Evan Rytlewski)! ! ! !
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue Uline Warehouse 10 p.m.
It’s the rare blues-rocker who chooses the trombone as his ax, but Trombone Shorty, the stage name for New Orleans musician Troy Andrews, has coaxed some soulful sounds out of the long, slender brass instrument Shorty, 31, has been playing his unique blend of jazz, funk and rap since he was 4 years old. A member of the Stooges Brass Band in his teens, he has been spreading New Orleans’ musical gospel while experimenting with a variety of approaches to brass performance. The musician mixes horn solos and vocal prowess easily on stage, creating a powerful blues sound with a Crescent City inflection. He also plays trumpet, organ, drums and, when pressed, the tuba. Shorty was part of Lenny Kravitz’s horn section and performed with U2 and Green Day during the reopening of the New Orleans Superdome for the NFL’s “Monday Night Football” pre-game show after the city’s devastation by Hurricane Katrina. His most discerning audience, however, may have been former President Barak Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama when he performed with B.B. King, Keb’ Mo’ and other artists at the White House in February 2012 as part of Black History Month. (Michael Muckian)

Zac Brown Band!
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 7:30 p.m.
! ! Their sound alternates between soulful and infectious, unabashedly country yet not limited by the restraints the label puts on some performers. Some fans enjoy the Zac Brown Band for their songs, but most come for the moveable musical feast the band carries with them wherever it plays. Zac Brown received his first guitar from his mother at age 8, and he has yet to put it down. He did take two years of guitar lessons, but he found his direction in the bluegrass sounds of his native Georgia and has never looked back. The band met with varying levels of success during the early 2000s, sometimes headlining festivals, and other times sleeping in its tour bus for lack of funds. But a variety of events and opportunities have continued to drive the band forward, eventually earning it the Best New Vocal Group Award from the Academy of Country Music in 2009 and New Artist of the Year from the Country Music Association Awards in 2010. From the delicate sounds of “Sweet Annie” to beachside bounce of “Jump Right In,” the Zac Brown Band manages to touch its fans in a variety of ways. And all of those touches are positive ones. Collective Soul
The Naked & Famous
Nineties bands thrive at Summerfest, which is why Collective Soul—which bounced onto the 1994 American music scene amid Alice in Chains, The Offspring and Jeff Buckley with a happy ditty about heaven’s light called “Shine”—is perfect for the Big Gig. A string of catchy pop-rock singles (“Gel,” “Precious Declaration,” “December”) carried Collective Soul through the late-’90s, but the band never stopped releasing new music, putting out five records between 2000 and 2015.
A catchy name is one way for a band to attract attention. The Naked & Famous, formed in 2007, already have a decade behind them, and the indie electronic band from Auckland, New Zealand, is attracting a global following. The group’s performances seethe with youthful angst, pulsing to a distinctive rhythm. Combine the lyrics about love’s labors lost with the music’s incessant electronic heartbeat, and you have the perfect recipe for emotional yearning—something at which the band is very good.
Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard 10 p.m.
The band played 160 shows in eight countries in support of its ninth and latest album, See What You Started by Continuing, a refined update on an unmistakable sound that received positive reviews, and a new album is slated for release later this year. Lead singer and chief songwriter Ed Roland also has a solo album on the way, as well as another disc with The Sweet Tea Project, his collaboration with Georgia musicians playing banjo, mandolin, steel guitar and ukulele. Ed’s little brother and Collective Soul guitarist Dean Roland has a side gig, too, in the altrock duo Magnets & Ghosts. Collective Soul’s Summerfest gig will be its first following a short tour with fellow ’90s stalwarts Tonic and Our Lady Peace. Let nostalgia reign! (Michael Popke)
Miller Lite Oasis 5 p.m.
The young quintet is fronted by Alisa Xayalith, a 31-year-old daughter of Laotian refugees who was born in Auckland. Introduced to her native music by her father, Xayalith taught herself guitar and her interest in music grew from there. As for the band’s name, it comes from English musician Tricky’s song “Tricky Kid,” an ambivalent ode to the notion of celebrity. Tricky quotes the line, “everyone wants to be naked and famous,” taken from a song of the same name by the now defunct Seattle group The Presidents of the United States of America. The five-member band had no doubt already mastered the art of being naked. Famous may be just a few more chords away. (Michael Muckian)

P!nk!
Big Thief!
Car Seat Headrest!
The knock against pop radio in the early ’00s was that it all sounded so prepackaged—it was dominated by Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and S Club 7: acts that carried an air of artifice, real or imagined. P!nk emerged as a pushback to all that, standing out with her loud personality: With her wild hair, skater fashion sensibilities and fondness for casual profanity, she offered an alternative to the more cookiecutter pop singers of the day, even if her music wasn’t really all that different from theirs (like many stars from her era, she got her start singing in a teen-pop group).
On paper, nothing about Big Thief’s Masterpiece seems all that unique. The group’s Saddle Creek debut is another rootsy indie-rock record in a world filled with them, complete with the same lopsided, oddly tuned guitars that have been a staple of the genre since the Pavement days. But paper doesn’t account for singer Adrianne Lenker’s twisty, unconstrained songwriting, which has a habit of wandering and digressing, yet never fails to tug at the heartstrings. The sloppier her songs are, the more they seem to connect.
Last year was an unusually strong year for indie-rock. The genre seems to be embracing the “rock” part of the label once again, and fans couldn’t be happier about it. Of all the buzzed-about 2016 indie records, though, one in particular seemed to emerge as a consensus favorite: Car Seat Headrest’s Teens of Denial, a 70-minute romp of feisty guitars and snappy songwriting, all tied together by frontman Will Toledo’s incongruously sleepy voice.
Starting with her blockbuster sophomore album Missundazstood, which sold a head-spinning 15 million copies and yielded her breakthrough single “Get The Party Started,” P!nk has insisted on creative control over her career, and it’s paid off well for her: The four albums that followed have all been blockbusters, including 2012’s The Truth About Love, which included guest spots from Eminem and, more memorably, fun.’s Nate Ruess on the hit ballad “Just Give Me a Reason.” She hasn’t released a record since then—understandably, perhaps, given she’s raising a family now—but in 2014 she released a low-profile folk album as part of the duo Rose Ave., with You+Me’s Dallas Green. (Evan Rytlewski)
Masterpiece was one of those records so loaded and so passionate, and so seemingly exhausting to create, that it felt like a culmination of nearly a lifetime of songwriting. It’s a bit surprising, then, that the band is releasing another one so soon: This month the band will release its sophomore album, Capacity, a work that early buzz suggests is every bit as massive and immersive as its predecessor. It was preceded by the single “Mythological Beauty,” a lovely, lilting ode to motherhood that further testifies to Lenker’s unparalleled ability to mine beauty and anguish out of any subject. Toledo had been kicking songs around for the project since 2010, some of which he re-recorded for his 2015 debut for Matador Records, Teens of Style, but Denial marked the moment where everything seemed to click: His songwriting was so witty and tuneful it made the inevitable comparisons to ’90s indie-rock touchstones irrelevant. The release wasn’t without its hiccups: An unauthorized interpolation of lyrics from The Cars’ hit “Just What I Needed” led to a recall of the entire initial run of CD and vinyl copies of the album, delaying its physical release by months. But even that incident may have worked out in Toledo’s favor. It only called more attention to a record that everybody already seemed to be talking about. (Evan Rytlewski)

The Chainsmokers w/ Vice and Captain Cuts
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 7:30 p.m. The ascent of The Chainsmokers to global pop star status represents the conquest of electronic dance music DJ culture to a heretofore unheard height. The duo of Andrew Taggert and Alex Pall have built their brand from their 2014 novelty hit, “#Selfie,” to a string of multi-million selling and streaming singles that have made them nigh omnipresent in certain cultural circles. Easily accessible melodies and vocals shared or led by mostly female guest singers have merited the twosome more time in the top ten of Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart than any act in a long while. They have accomplished this with hits such as “Closer” and “Roses” by marrying the sonic signifiers of EDM subgenres such as techno and dubstep to ear-worming melodies serving lyrics that often speak to the relational and sexual realities and options of many Millennials. The combination hasn’t always sat well with critics of The Chainsmokers’ music and media imaging, but that shouldn’t stop the group’s many fans from enjoying the twosome’s mixture of hooks, hedonism and, every so often, sensitivity when they headline at Summerfest this year. Death From Above 1979! Uline Warehouse 10 p.m.
It’s fitting that the high-octane, dance-metal duo Death from Above 1979 experienced such a wild lifespan. Their debut album, 2004’s You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, is a battering ram of brash, noisy dance music that’s visceral, intense and carnal, like a Kesha cover of a CroMags song. The record launched the two-man team of Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler as indie rock’s next big thing—thanks to a “Best New Music” billing from Pitchfork Media, back when one favorable review could ostensibly make a band’s career. The same, sadly, remained true for the inverse. And shortly after receiving a brutal pan on the following year’s remix album—scoring a rare 0.5—the band broke up. The two went on to pursue separate musical projects (Grainger went solo and Keeler formed MSTRKRFT), but when the insatiable appetite of summer festivals for reunions came calling in 2011, Death From Above 1979 picked up the phone. At a surprise reunion show during South By Southwest, fans literally stormed the venue, breaking down chain-link fences and clashing with police. The band’s second act, however, has failed to capture that same energy from the previous decade. The post-reunion album, 2014’s The Physical World, reaches for bigger pop moments than the muscle that defined its supercharged sound. (Kevin Mueller)
Jamila Woods!
Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard 5 p.m. What a wonderful thing Chicago has going for it right now. The rise of Chance the Rapper from cult favorite into legitimate superstar over the last couple of years has been a boon for his entire circle of Windy City collaborators, including Jamila Woods, the soul singer whose crystalline voice has adorned a couple of his most joyous songs, including “Sunday Candy” and “Blessings.” If those tracks showed that Woods could sing her heart out, it was her 2016 album, HEAVN, which proved her as a stand-alone artist with her own distinct vision. HEAVN features contributions from a host of Chicagoans, including Saba, Kweku Collins, Peter Cottontale, Noname and, of course, Chance, but they all work in the service of Woods’ politicized songs, which frequently touch on the themes related to the Black Lives Matter movement. On “Blk Grl Soldier,” she highlights the hypocrisy of a society that tells black women to keep their mouths closed. “They want us in the kitchen,” she sings, “Kill our sons with lynchin’s / We get loud about it / Oh, now we’re the bitches.” This spring, the label Jagjaguwar announced that it’s partnered with Woods’ Chicago label Closed Sessions to give the record an even wider release, which could further help it find the audience it deserves. WEDNESDAY
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers w/ Chris Stapleton
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 7:30 p.m. 2017 marks 40 years since Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ debut LP, and the band is celebrating with (what else?) a nationwide tour. In the decades since the release of that self-titled record, Petty has issued 13 albums with The Heartbreakers plus three solo discs and a pair of albums with The Traveling Wilburys—an unlikely supergroup featuring Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. Petty epitomizes a certain strain of what came to be called classic rock, although his music was always more solidly rooted in mid-’60s rock trailblazers than many of his ’70s contemporaries. Petty remains committed to tightly written songs and memorable choruses. His best tracks can fill an arena with decibels yet also speak intimately to his listeners. Petty and The Heartbreakers hit their stride with their second album, You’re Gonna Get It! (1978), with its singles “I Need to Know” and “Listen to Her Heart.” Their third, Damn the Torpedoes (1979), went platinum on the strength of “Refugee,”“Don’t Do Me Like That” and “Here Comes My Girl.” (For much of the ’80s through his death in 1994, Milwaukee’s Howie Epstein was The Heartbreakers’ bassist.) Petty has no lack of hits to choose from for his 40th-anniversary tour, including “American Girl,”“Free Fallin’” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” (David Luhrssen)

Girl Talk
T-Pain!
If bedroom mash-up artists appear like a forgotten dance music trend now, it’s simply because Greg Gillis hasn’t released a proper Girl Talk album in seven years. No contemporary producer can construct the wild, genrespanning collages with the same emotional pull and precise technical skill as the overtly meticulous DJ—and no one even attempts it much these days. Girl Talk cavalierly merged together hip-hop, pop music and indie rock in short, spastic bursts that built slowly into huge sonic climaxes. Listening to his albums felt like traveling through the architect’s expansive and eclectic record collection, but it was also something that could take a latenight party up an extra notch, too.
It’s easy to forget how passionately people hated Auto-Tune when the effect first began to proliferate pop radio in the mid-’00s. These days, most listeners seem to accept it for what it is: a harmless aesthetic trapping. But there was a time when it was far and away the most divisive sound in music, and during that era no artist was more associated with it than T-Pain. The self-proclaimed “rappa ternt sanga” didn’t just popularize the sound, he spread it everywhere—like some kind of robotic Johnny Appleseed. In a five-year span, he appeared on more than 50 charting singles, making Auto-Tune virtually ubiquitous.
Harley≠ Davidson Roadhouse 10 p.m.
With current online music-listening norms still resembling the Wild West, the pseudocontroversy the DJ faced on potential copyright infringement issues for distributing his Girl Talk albums without clearing the samples seems quaint now—Gillis claimed he was safe under the Fair Use law and that turned out a good bet as no label ever sought legal action against him. But that legal-shirking certainly helped cultivate the renegade appeal of the guerrilla-style music, turning the long-haired, hippie-looking white dude from Pittsburgh into an unlikely rebel and much-respected DJ. (Kevin Mueller)
Uline Warehouse 10 p.m.
Though he never disappeared from the public eye, the hits began to dry up for T-Pain following his pretty crappy 2011 album, Revolver, which is a shame. During his peak, on hits like “I’m Sprung” and “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’),” nobody was making singles so effortlessly smooth and good-humored. There’s still plenty of time for a comeback, though. He’s only 31 years old and a beloved personality with plenty of good will—as his viral 2015 performance for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series demonstrated. And just in case anybody doubted him, that concert proved once and for all that, yes, the guy really can sing, even without AutoTune. (Evan Rytlewski)

THURSDAY
BJ The Chicago Kid
AWOLNATION
REO Speedwagon
On his major label debut, 2016’s In My Mind, BJ the Chicago Kid faces a tough dilemma. He’s tempted to stay up past his bedtime to partake in some late-night activities with an attractive woman, but he knows he really should be getting a good night’s sleep for church the next day. Like any seasoned R&B singer, he chooses the seduction, even though he can’t help but pray for salvation (“Hopefully we can go to heaven / Cause I’m staying, I’m staying”). That duality between God and the singer’s sinful choices lies at the heart of the smooth-sounding, contemplative album, and God seems to be on the losing end.
The only thing that tells us more about a band than its name may be the opening of one of its songs. Consider the first line of AWOLNATION’s original version of “Run”: “I am a human being capable of doing terrible things.” Back that with discordant, soaring guitar chords supported by a robotic electronic beat, and you have a pretty clear idea what AWOLNATION is about. That’s if the name wasn’t enough of a clue.
REO Speedwagon’s last non-holiday studio album was 2007’s Find Your Own Way Home, and the band hasn’t cracked the Billboard Hot 100 for almost two decades. But that doesn’t matter with REO, which, just like Summerfest, is celebrating 50 years in 2017. (Never mind that only one of the five members, keyboardist Neal Doughty, has been around since the beginning.) With a deep catalogue that runs from early-’70s hits “Ridin’ the Storm Out” and “Sophisticated Lady” to MTV-era No. 1 singles like “Keep on Lovin’ You” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” there’s no need to play anything post-1987— though 1990’s “Love Is a Rock” is still a cool song.
Johnson Controls World Stage 10 p.m.
BJ The Chicago Kid spent nearly a decade on the precipice of the limelight—singing backup on tour with Usher, Stevie Wonder and Mary J. Blige. He eventually released his first mixtape in 2009 and earned himself name guesting on early records of two of the strongest voices in rap music right now, Chance the Rapper and Kendrick Lamar. On In My Mind, they return the favor, adding their distinct impressions on the earnest soul of the insatiable crooner. But the leading man emerges from those songs with the most shine, even if he does believe his soul faces an uncertain future. (Kevin Mueller)

Vocalist Aaron Bruno fronts the Los Angelesbased power quartet that has been categorized as alternative or industrial rock, electropop or synth-pop. Despite the performers’ lack of black-and-white makeup, “electroGoth” might also be a fitting moniker based on Bruno’s sometimes brutal vocals and the music’s often dark, anti-social lyrics. The band does have an interesting backstory. Bruno, an L.A. music scene veteran, was approached in ’09 by Red Bull Records, which offered free use of its recording facilities. As an enterprising musician, he laid down a few tracks of his own composition, created a band and released a digital debut album, Megalithic Symphony, in 2011. The band’s first single from the album, the equally caustic “Sail,” went platinum, eventually selling 5.5 million copies in the U.S.; such is the continued social disenfranchisement of today’s music fans. (Michael Muckian)

When not touring with bands like Chicago, Styx and Def Leppard, REO finds other ways to roll with the changes. In 2015, the group collaborated with country singer-songwriter Sara Evans on “Crossroads,” CMT’s flagship music series, and earlier this year, REO was part of the Rock Legends Cruise V with the Pat Benatar, Don Felder, the Marshall Tucker Band and Todd Rundgren. Then in April, 1977’s double live album You Get What You Play For was reissued on blue vinyl—a classic reminder of this band’s solid Midwestern roots and timeless appeal. (Michael Popke)

FRIDAY
Dierks Bentley!
w/ Cole Swindell and Jon Pardi
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 7:30 p.m. Calling Dierks Bentley a mere singer-songwriter is a little like describing the Grand Canyon as having “a nice view.” The Phoenix native may not have the scope and grandeur of America’s favorite natural monument, but there often is more going on in one of his songs than other artists have buried in their entire albums, and you don’t have to get smacked in the face to appreciate it. Credit at least in part Nashville’s superb production standards and wide array of studio talent to draw on. It’s all easier when you have the best at your fingertips as evidenced in Bentley’s 2016 album, Black. But the singer’s largely languid sound supports subtle lyrics that speak to affairs of the heart with a certain amount of comfort and familiarity. The messages are clear, but operate more as a memory of loves found and lost, the way we might think of them when we’re the subject of our own songs. But then, that’s what Bentley strives for, and he succeeds more often than not. Singersongwriters come and go, especially in Nashville, where there are more artists per capita than just about any other U.S. city. Dierks Bentley may prove to be the exception to the rule, and his fans are thankful for that. (Michael Muckian)

Huey Lewis & The News BMO Harris Pavilion 9:45 p.m.
Like Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours the decade before, the impact of Huey Lewis and The News’ landmark 1983 album, Sports, reverberated for years throughout pop culture. A testament to the ubiquity of those albums is the prevalence of both records in used vinyl bins, where a new generation continues to discover them once again. While the album contains some forgettable production moments, Sports stands up today as an everlasting ’80s pop record. While many similar musicians of that era have been left in the dust, Huey Lewis and The News retains an iconic status. Their legacy has been especially helped by films in the ’80s. Lewis makes a cameo in one of the decade’s biggest blockbusters, Back to the Future, which also features the band’s No. 1 hit, “The Power of Love.” The other highest grossing action film at the time, Ghostbusters, features a Ray Parker Jr. song that suspiciously resembled Sports single “I Want a New Drug”—Lewis sued and the two settled out of court in the ’90s. But perhaps the biggest effect on the band from cinema comes from 2000’s American Psycho, when the infamous character Patrick Bateman praises the commercial and creative output of the band’s successful mid-’80s run to a houseguest before brutally murdering him. If one of the most memorable cinematic psychopaths loves a band, how can they possibly be lame? (Kevin Mueller)
Atmosphere!
Harley≠ Davidson Roadhouse 10 p.m. Emerging from Minneapolis well before that city had any reputation for its rap scene, the hip-hop outfit Atmosphere celebrated its 20th year together last year. That’s an amazing feat for any rap act, especially one that has consistently tackled subject matter so emotionally demanding. On the group’s most celebrated releases, frontman Slug poured out his heart and his soul, cursing out his exes and confiding his addictions. At the time there was nothing like it, and he became the poster child for a certain strain of tortured, hyper-emotional, independent rap. He was to hip-hop as Morrissey was to rock: a self-effacing, black-humored icon who never let himself get too caught up in his own cult of personality. These days, however, Slug’s outlook on life is considerably brighter. On recent albums like 2014’s funk-minded Southsiders and last year’s mellow, surprisingly good-natured Fishing Blues, Slug has traded his usual autobiographical laments for vivid storytelling, and even when he does get personal, he does so with an optimism that would have been unthinkable on an Atmosphere release 15 years ago. On tracks like “Won’t Look Back” and “Anybody That I’ve Known,” he reflects on the rocky life that he’d led and concludes that he wouldn’t change a thing. (Evan Rytlewski)

SATURDAY
Future, Big Sean and Migos
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 7 p.m. Now here’s a bill to remember: Not one, not two, but three monolithic rap acts, all of them at the peak of their commercial and critical popularity. One of those artists just made history this year, too: This winter, Future became the first artist ever to debut albums at number one on the Billboard albums chart in consecutive weeks, first with his cold-blooded, self-titled album, and then the following week with his much brighter HNDRXX. That second one might be his best record yet—a beautifully crafted slab of soulful rap that plays to his strengths as a singer, a rapper and an icon. No other artist in rap seems quite so driven right now. Big Sean, while never nearly the critical phenom that Future is, is riding high off of his biggest single yet, the rally anthem “Bounce Back.” Thanks in good part to that smash, his latest album, I Decided, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. That album features a guest spot from this bill’s other big act: Migos, the cultishly adored Southern rap trio who have helped popularize not only a specific kind of flow (a distinctive, syncopated triplet pattern) but also a dance, the Dab. This winter the trio scored the first number one hit of their career with their inescapable Lil Uzi Vert collaboration “Bad and Boujee.” (Evan Rytlewski)

Whitney!
Chevelle !
The Chicago garage-pop group Smith Westerns burned fast and bright, leaving behind a small discography of catchy albums just begging to be rediscovered by future generations, especially their glammy 2011 record for Fat Possum Records, Dye it Blonde. That band may be done, but its members have continued to make some fantastic music. While frontman Cullen Omori set off on a solo career after the breakup of the Chicago power-pop ensemble Smith Westerns, his former bandmates Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich started a new group called Whitney.
In response to the ironic detachment of the ’90s and that era’s tongue-firmly-in-cheek attitudes, alt-metal band Chevelle unapologetically pounding out heavy music with sincerity seemed quite refreshing. “They don’t have an ironic take on what they are doing,” renowned Electrical Audio producer Steve Albini told MTV about recording the Grayslake, Ill., group’s 1999 debut, Point #1, after its release. “You only get the opportunity to be genuine once.” It’s perhaps why so many listeners jumped on the bandwagon for the band’s major label follow-up, Wonder What’s Next, buoyed by the alt-radio hits “The Red” and “Send the Pain Below” which eventually earned platinum status.
Johnson Controls World Sound Stage 8 p.m.
The unassuming band name really doesn’t do justice to what a joy their debut album is. An exuberant, relentlessly hooky blend of pop, soul and psychedelia, with periodic traces of folk and country, last year’s Light Upon the Lake raked in rave reviews from publications like Paste and Pitchfork, and earned the band a vocal fan in Elton John (yes, the Elton John), who was so enthusiastic about the record that he interviewed the group for a New York Times magazine feature last fall. “I just fell in love with the music,” John beamed of the group. “I went on the website and I saw the video for ‘No Woman.’ It was fantastic. I thought it was so wistful and so plaintive and no one else sounded like that.” (Evan Rytlewski)
Harley≠ Davidson Roadhouse 9:45 p.m.
That earnestness helped the band retain a loyal fanbase, which stayed on through unsatisfying follow-ups and in-band fighting—comprised of three brothers, the youngest was publically forced out in 2005. Four of the six subsequent albums landed higher on the Billboard charts than Wonder What’s Next. While Chevelle is no longer the over-the-airwaves mainstay they were a decade ago, their latest album is louder and faster than anything before it. The North Corridor cranks up the volume, doubles down on the Tool and Helmet reference points and makes no apologies along the way. (Kevin Mueller)

SUNDAY
Outlaw Music Festival Featuring Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and Sheryl Crow
American Family Insurance Amphitheater 2 p.m. Quite possibly the biggest spectacle of all of Summerfest’s American Family Insurance Amphitheater shows, the festival’s closing night concert is one of those “if you’ve never seen them before, now’s your chance” kind of bills. Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and their respective bands will lead a show billed as the “Outlaw Music Festival,” joined by a wealth of younger talent including Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Margo Price and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. At least one of those artists has new music to promote: Nelson released his latest album, God’s Problem Child, in April. Nelson is something of a mainstay at Summerfest—he performed at the festival’s BMO Harris Pavilion just last year—while Dylan will be returning after an eight-year absence. His last performance at the Big Gig was in 2009, when he was once again joined by Nelson. Sheryl Crow has also played the festival before, and while she might seem like kind of an odd man out on the lineup (it’s doubtful that anybody has ever called the “Soak Up the Sun” singer an “outlaw”), she’s a pretty sensational live performer whose rootsier material doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. She can give her older peers on the bill a run for their money. (Evan Rytlewski)

Blackberry Smoke
The Shins!
Blackberry Smoke might be more accustomed to playing rowdy clubs than larger venues such as the U.K.’s O2 Academy and Summerfest, but after 17 years and five full-length studio albums—including last year’s critically acclaimed Like An Arrow—this authentic Southern rock band from Atlanta is finally bringing its robust blend of outlaw country and rock to the masses. For starters, think Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Black Crowes, the Marshall Tucker Band and the Zac Brown Band.
Of all the bands that brought the previously underground sounds of indie-rock into the mainstream in the ’00s, few did it better or more distinctively than The Shins. While the band’s hooky pop songs won’t actually change anybody’s life—as Natalie Portman famously promised in the greatest eye-roll moment of many in Zach Braff’s Garden State—it’s always been a treasure to listen to, as comforting in its own way as a warm blanket and a cup of soup. Singer-songwriter James Mercer has a rare knack for converting anxious thoughts into moments of wonder.
Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard 9:45 p.m.
Listen for set highlight “Sunrise in Texas,” a song on the new album that’s been part of the band’s live repertoire for a decade. As further evidence of Blackberry Smoke’s mainstream status, the band recently attached its name to Asheville Brewing Company’s Like an Arrow “blackberry infused” wheat ale. A portion of all sales benefit the SHARE Military Initiative at Shepherd Center in Atlanta to raise resources and awareness for injured post-9/11 war veterans undergoing treatment for traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. “We do not take care of our veterans,” Blackberry Smoke drummer Brit Turner said when the beer debuted. “It is our duty as citizens and humans to fix this, no matter what.” (Michael Popke)
BMO Harris Pavilion 9:45 p.m.
Since Mercer gutted the core of the band’s lineup following 2007’s Wincing the Night Away, the band has been a solo project in all but name only, but he’s continued to make some fantastic records. 2012’s Port of Morrow was filled with light, purposeful rock songs, and this year’s Heartworms is even better, a collection of rich, luxurious psychedelic pop that consciously nods to the group’s beloved 2001 debut album Oh, Inverted World— which, not coincidentally, was the last time Mercer attempted to self-record an album. Heartworms may not be the must-own masterpiece that those first couple of Shins albums were, but any record this assured, this inventive and this effortlessly tuneful is worth celebrating. (Evan Rytlewski)
