Cricket and Hockey Tour Barbados 2016

FROM THE HEADMASTER The chance to represent your School abroad is a tremendous opportunity and one which I am sure every single member of the touring party will embrace whole-heartedly. I hope that the tour will prove to be a great success both on and off the pitch. Of course, the ten Cricket and Hockey fixtures are its focal point but I encourage you all to throw yourselves into every activity, to sample the local culture and traditions, and to enjoy the weather! To our hosts in Barbados, I extend very genuine and heartfelt thanks for your generosity in receiving and entertaining Sherborne’s boys and staff. I am sure that they will have an unforgettable trip and I hope that you also will enjoy your meetings with them and thereby experience at least a flavour of our wonderful school. Good luck to you all – travel safely, work hard, play fair, and represent Sherborne with distinction.

Dr Dominic Luckett Headmaster and CEO

A MESSAGE FROM SIR GARFIELD SOBERS

It was a fantastic experience and pleasure to welcome Sir Garfield Sobers to The Upper, Sherborne’s 1st XI pitch, towards the end of June this year. It was a thrill to meet him for all those who were there and he was a truly engaging speaker. With a bit of luck, we may bump into him again during our time on the island!

ANDY NURTON MASTER IN CHARGE OF CRICKET

When I took over as MiC Cricket in 2015 the very first thing I did was consider where might be our next tour destination. Touring is such an important part of boys' development in all sports that it must play a significant part in any programme. Cricket is perhaps more tricky than many other sports due to the fact that it is not really played anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere (or at least in Europe) and therefore options are limited, as are slots in the year. That being said, those destinations that are available are well worth the effort and we soon settled on Barbados. West Indies cricket has very publicly gone through the mill in recent years but it is testament to their love of the game and their passionate approach that they have managed to be a significant force in the modern format of Twenty20, winning both the men's and women's T20 World Cups earlier this year. One hopes that this helps bring West Indies cricket back

closer to the glory days of the ‘70s and ‘80s when they dominated everyone else in the world with a mixture of swash-buckling batting and fearsome quick bowling. Touring is not just about what happens on the pitch though and I believe that there must be other activities included in a touring experience, especially when significant travel distance and time are involved. On non-match days we will therefore be undertaking a number of leisure excursions so that the boys return having had a true taste of the Caribbean, hopefully alongside winning some cricket matches and developing their own games ahead of the 2017 school season.

CHRIS ROBERTS MASTER IN CHARGE OF HOCKEY

I am thoroughly looking forward to our combined cricket/hockey tour this December and I believe it will be a fantastic experience for the whole touring party. Hockey in Barbados is renowned for its annual Hockey Festival, which attracts teams from across the globe – the Caribbean, Europe, South America, the United States, the Far East and Australasia. The Festival is described as the biggest single annual hockey tournament in the hemisphere. I am hopeful that the standard of hockey we encounter on our tour will really test our boys. By the time we arrive the new artificial pitch at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex will be complete and the boys can experience playing hockey on a water-based pitch, for some boys this will be a new and exciting experience.

Hockey at Sherborne is improving on a year by year basis and this current tour will hopefully prepare the boys for the forthcoming season which starts in January. Touring is not just about competing , the boys have an action packed agenda which will give them all an insight into the culture and history of the this fantastic island which dates as far back as 1623 BC. I hope the boys have a truly memorable tour to the island of Barbados and they share their experiences with family and friends when the touring party returns 22nd December.
