CONCEPT 20th Symphony is a boutique hotel located in Nashville, Tennessee. It contains a restaurant, spa, guest rooms, apartment suites, and a rooftop bar and grill. The design concept is based on the history of music throughout the 20th century, the progression of music technologies and instruments throughout the ages, the growth of many music genres over time, and the elements of basic music theory. WHY “20TH SYMPHONY?” A symphony is an elaborate composition, typically made into four parts, similar to the way the hotel has four main parts. “20th Symphony is also a play on the phrase “20th century.” DESIGN INTENT The separate spaces will each have different influences behind the design, each focusing on different elements of music history.

LOBBY

The main lobby is inspired by elements of music and music technologies. The focal point of this space is the metallic reception desk and mural walls.

RESTAURANT

Brass & Cadence serves in-house breakfast, and transitions to an upscale restaurant for lunch and dinner. To four semi-circular booths are positioned at the center of the restaurant.

The materials were chosen to convey the sultry, rhythmic music of jazz ensembles, as well as the glitz and glam that characterized the bars and speakeasies of the jazz age. The custom booths and bar reflect design styles of the roaring 20s, and are the eye-catching focal points in the room.

Rhyme & Rhythm is the hotel’s spa and fitness facility inspired by the music technology of the late 1900s. The spa includes massage beds, mud baths, pedicure chairs, and a locker room.

MASSAGE The main attraction of Rhyme & Rhythm is the massage rooms, which employ sound THERAPY therapy as an interactive application and the inspiration along the back wall.

BASSLINE bar & grille

Bassline Bar & Grille is inspired more specifically by the blues, R&B, and soul genres of the mid 1900s and the iconic instruments used. The furnishings and finishes were chosen to reflect the rhyhtm, harmony, and richness of the music. Natural finishes such as the wooden pergolas and greenery parallel the honesty and soulfulness of the music. There are multiple seating postures, a bar, and an outdoor stage for live music.

PERGOLA SEATING

The outdoor dining areas provide booths and chairs beneath wooden pergolas draped in beautiful greenery and decorative lighting.

The art of pottery is known to be a therapeutic activity. While the body and mind are in synergy, the mind is opened to: - a creative outlet - optimism - improved focus - exploration - reduced stress - anti-inflammatory relief - sociability - a new hobby

CONCEPT ter•ra: (latin) earth, land Intentionally and thoughtfully crafted with natural materials, pottery is an art form that allows artists to create and mold using their own two hands. The raw clay is molded and formed into a beautiful creation as the artist shapes the material into a work of art. Just as the earthen material is transformed from ordinary to extraordinary, our wellbeing is a journey towards prosperous health. DESIGN INTENT The natural clay materials of pottery inspired the tones and textures used within the design, and the organic shapes of pottery influenced the custom wall features and furniture selections. Terra Health and Wellness is a primary care clinic that promotes healing through design and inspires patients to become their best selves alongside medical expertise.

These veterans develop a deeper character and lifestyle- growing, refining themselves, revealing layers of themselves and cultivating their capabilities. This reassimilation is very similar to wood turning, where raw wood is taken and turned on a lathe to reveal the beautiful layers of grain, knots, different colors, and creating new orga ni c shapes. The wood turning reveals intricate characteristics and refines them into something more beautiful.

SPACE Location: Jacksonville, Florida 51,680 SQ. FT., 2 floors, preexisting building CONCEPT Gallivant is a travel agency with the goal of minimizing the stress of coordinating vacation plans. To reflect the experience of travelling, Gallivant is designed to resemble a contemporary airport lounge or terminal, giving the agents a flexible, open setting with a productive ambience throughout the collaborative space. DESIGN INTENT To reinforce the collaborative work ethic, there are grouped workstations and conference areas around the office, along with plenty of adjustable, dispersed seating meant for private needs, which is also quite similar to seating arrangements in airports. Overall, the strategic space planning, contemporary furnishings, and finish selection benefit the functionality of the office and contribute to the design inspired by airport lounges.
