Young Achievers Program Manager A girl in year 10 wants to work as a doctor. Her parents have arrived in Australia with no English, little money and no family here. How is she to find her way into the world of medicine? Or the boy whose parents work in business. He has strong aspirations to become a physiotherapist. Who is able to introduce these young people to the career they so dearly want to work in, the contacts and networks that are so helpful and the systems each young person must manoeuvre through? I am delighted to report that over the past 8 years the Young Achievers Program (YAP) has provided mentors for 180 young people. Wow! As the YAP manager, I am so proud of this program. High achieving young people have passed through YAP with aspirations to work in psychology, human rights, fashion; to become writers, lawyers, musicians, doctors, environmentalists, engineers‌..and much more. Each mentor has been instrumental in assisting their mentee to experience and understand the ins and outs of their career choice. The volunteers are extremely valued mentors. Many have been in YAP for 2 or 3 years, others for 4 to 5 years, offering their experience and friendship either to the same mentee or to a new young person each year. The Young Achievers Mentoring and Workshop Program has grown from 10 young people in the inaugural year of 2009 to 39 high achievers in 2016. It was initiated by Philip Brass, whose foresight and belief in the benefits of mentoring to assist young people to achieve their career goals, was inspirational. None of this would have been possible without the support of the philanthropists, schools, parents, volunteers and the young people themselves. It has been my great honour to have observed the growth of the mentees since day one and I look forward to continuing with this wonderful program.

Our Generous Benefactors Too often in our society, young people face a range of challenges when striving to attain their goals. Our idea for the Young Achievers Program was borne from the fact that, with additional support, young people can overcome these challenges and gain the break they need to make their aspirations a reality. With the support of their families and schools, ten young people were selected to participate in the Young Achievers Program in 2009. This number has grown each year and now in 2016 we have 39 young achievers. Each young person represented a range of different career aspirations from law and medicine through to writing and international studies. A selection process ensured that young people were chosen on the basis of their career goals and their capacity to benefit from mentoring and workshops offered during the 12 months Program. Mentors were selected on the basis of a range of their interests and professional backgrounds and aimed to meet with each young person on a fortnightly basis. Mentors provided both social support and guidance on career goals. Workshops were offered on a monthly basis to enhance young people’s learning and development. We had the opportunity to meet the participants at various times throughout the year and it was wonderful to gain a first hand insight into the enthusiasm and personal growth for the group. There are many people to thank! In addition to the young people and their mentors, I thank our Steering Committee and our growing list of financial supporters who share our vision. Also, we offer a special acknowledgement to Viv Ray, the Young Achievers Program Manager. The Program has been extremely successful under her leadership. We look forward to the next five years for the Young Achievers Program and wish the past and present young people the very best for the future.

Jodie, Cathy, Roma: three generations of YAP Cathy From Mentee in 2009 to mentor in 2016, it has been such a great YAP journey for me. I feel really privileged to have had Jodie as my mentor and extremely grateful to have the opportunity to pass on some of her pearls of wisdom to Roma. Jodie introduced me to Voiceworks magazine, loaded me up with new release books and showed me the editing side of publishing when I had only ever really known about the writing/reading aspect. As a former mentee, I'm always thinking about what sorts of things I would have liked to experience and have heard in my last year of high school. With that in mind, most of the outings I have with Roma are about relaxing, enriching or career-focused activities. She's a great mentee and very on top of things already so I feel like my main role is to allow her time and space for recreation. It was a little surreal but very exciting to be able to introduce Roma to the magazine and organisation that made such a difference in my life, as it was introduced to me by Jodie. It's such a pleasure for me to get to share these experiences with such a bright and open person as Roma and I hope she gets as much fun out of it as I do! Going into the mentoring experience, I said that my hope was that I would form as good a relationship with Roma as I had with Jodie and I'm pleased to say I think that has been achieved.

Roma Having Cathy as a mentor has been so helpful because the last year of high school is always a bit of a struggle and can be very overwhelming; but having someone who has been through the same things and who has been a Young Achiever in YAP herself means Cathy can provide some insights and help for me to keep things in perspective. She has also opened up so many opportunities for me, such as meeting people from her work, Voiceworks, which has allowed me a peek into the writing/publishing/ editing world. It’s also really reassuring to hear the stories of the roundabout ways Cathy and her coworkers have found themselves in their positions. Cathy started in an Arts course and has since changed into something completely different without losing her interest or passion for literature and the arts. Having a mentor, out in the real world has made the possibilities and flexibility of life apparent to me, which has been extremely important during such an all consuming year. A huge thanks to Cathy and to Jodie, Cathy’s mentor who I got to meet and talk to earlier this year.
Jodie I was matched with Cathy in the inaugural year of the YAP in 2009 and we so enjoyed our first year that we signed up for a second twelve months. It has been a delight to see Cathy blossom from being a clever, quiet, bookish kind of girl into a clever, confident young woman, gifted at public speaking, celebrated by her peers on the editorial committee at Voiceworks and flourishing at university. I have also enjoyed the opportunity to contribute further to the continuing success of the Program as a member of the YAP Steering Committee and as one of the interviewers for applicants to the 2013 Program. The calibre of the applicants was outstanding, and it was an excellent reminder that young people are passionate and motivated and capable and ambitious and, in many cases, determined to make the world a better place. The YAP activities and workshops have offered Cathy and her co-achievers life-skills, new experiences, friendships and a sense of community beyond the sphere of their family and friends – and through their relationship with their mentors has opened doors to industries and careers to which they aspire. I am so proud of Cathy and her achievements, and I am extremely grateful to Philip Brass for founding the program and to Viv Ray for managing it so skilfully.

Maria, determined to be a doctor Maria 2011 and 2012. I've been determined to become a doctor since year 8. However, no one in my family had ever worked in the medical field and the curriculum at my school was tailored to getting struggling students to pass. But thanks to the amazing Young Achievers Program, Dr. Bronwyn King, a Radiology oncologist, became my mentor. Bronwyn was a phenomenal mentor who opened her workplace and her life to me. Over these past few years it really has felt like I have a ‘big sister’ looking out for me. Two of the most valuable things she has taught me are; to never be afraid of people smarter than you, embrace them, learn from them and, to always take every opportunity presented to you as you never know where it will lead. I continue to live by this wisdom. 3 years out of the program and I am still in regular contact with Bronwyn. I am still awed by her tireless commitment and energy to making the world a better place. I’m currently in my 3rd year of Biomedicine at The University of Melbourne and I am still constantly trying to attain the seemingly impossible and am ever so slowly moving forward to reach my ultimate goal, one step at a time.

Jasmine 2010 During my time in the Young Achievers Program, I was paired up with an exceptional mentor. Brooke Ryan is a Park Ranger and I couldn’t have asked for anyone else. I am one of 13 children and I grew up in a low socio economic suburb of Melbourne. Although my family and school life posed many struggles, financially and emotionally, I feel very fortunate to have had strong ambitions from an early age. Without my determination to achieve, I would have never have been recommended for the YAP by my teachers and never would have experienced the difference a mentor in my life would make. From the age of 14, I knew I wanted to become a Marine Biologist. I was adamant that I didn’t want to do anything else. Being in YAP offered immeasurable benefits that were invaluable, not only for my career ambitions but also my personal development. Year 12 was extremely stressful and challenging. But each time I caught up with Brooke or participated in a workshop, it was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. Brooke gave me a lot of guidance and encouragement and after each catch up with her, I felt more motivated and self-assured that I was on the right path. It really is something special to be a part of a program with like-minded people who share the same desire to achieve. YAP taught me that having fun and enjoying the journey is just as important as achieving. I believe the YAP, in particularly, the mentoring experience with Brooke instilled a great sense of self belief and confidence that I still carry today. Thank you Brooke, Viv and all those involved in making YAP possible as it was and still is empowering to have others believe in me and want to see me achieve what I set out to do.

Peter 2014, 2015 I was born in China and grew up with my aunty’s family. At age 11 I immigrated to Australia to live with my father and step mum. It was a difficult transition. Two years later they separated. I experienced great financial hardship living with my father and I often felt lonely and isolated. The first time I heard about the Young Achievers Program was when I was in year 10. It was at an information session when Viv came to the school to talk about YAP. However, I decided not to apply as back then I was not always the kind of student that got involved. But the following year I applied and was accepted. I have been with the program for two years and have received numerous benefits. The workshops have made me a more rounded person and equipped me with many more skills, such as public speaking, communication and leadership. My mentors who work in commerce, were David in 2014 and Jane in 2015. I have learned so much from them. And Jane has definitely felt like a Big Sister to me. It has been beyond easy for us to connect both professionally and personally, and it is great for me to be able to identify with a mentor who has had similar experiences to me. I have benefitted enormously from much helpful advice about my studies and career. The program has definitely opened up opportunities for me and given me a fresh perspective on life. I am very proud to be part of the program and am very grateful to have been a member of the alumni committee.
Attending the workshops once a month pushed me out of my comfort zone. I couldn't be too shy and learned to come out of my shell when I was in YAP.

Eight Years Marine 2015 and 2016 . Being in the Young Achiever’s Program will always be very memorable for me. It has given me so many opportunities to meet professionals and other students and has shaped me to become the person I am today. For as long as I can remember, I have been watching legal dramas and reading crime novels, and after some ‘real-life’ research, I was set on becoming a lawyer. So I was ecstatic when I found out my mentor, Sophie, is a lawyer. Together, Sophie and I have visited the Children’s Court, the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court and County Court. Sophie has introduced me to her former colleagues, some who are now sitting Magistrates and Judges, and helped me see the inner working of the legal system. YAPS’s monthly workshop is often the highlight of that month. It’s a great time to meet new people, relax and learn something new. I do hope there will be times when I can practice my skills such as Auslan or dance (but perhaps not self defence), as well as times when I can listen to our guest speakers again, such as Julian Burnside. Camps at Phillip Island and Mt. Evelyn have taught me how to surf and another use for milk crates. And alumni events have shown me career paths I did not know existed. But most importantly, through YAP I have been introduced to fellow students from across Melbourne, and the friendships I have made will no doubt extend into the future. I thank Viv, Philip and BBBS for their support and continued dedication to YAP. And to Sophie, thank you for the time you have sacrificed to teach, guide, and support me. I look forward to continuing drinking coffee with you and playing the occasional game of pool.
