Tutor: Lee Shu-Fan Site: Tai Hang, Hong Kong Type: Academic B.Arch Final Year Project 2016 Spring (3 months)

The project is to design a new apartment in a old district. The target users are the young singles and young families. Nowadays, Hong Kong housing architecture provides too much privacy. Residents directly move downward from living spaces to streets with fully enclosure. There is no any interaction point for people. Pedestrians are completely denied by all the locked gates and security architecture.

OWN / SHARE Apartment I design two ways of extensions from both sides. Street is extended to the building inner open spaces and living space is extended to the outdoor spaces. The whole architecture consists different gradient of privacy (own/share gradient) that need to be explored and experienced by users.

The pedestrians, cars and street activities occupy the narrow streets in Tai Hang. The streets are public but people will treat them as their own properties sometimes, especially at the shop front and the narrow back lanes. 02

Demonstration of a path, from the street to the living space. Considering different factors affecting the quality and gradient, such as materials, percentage of enclosure, number of turning corners, distance between spaces, void connections and sound. When the path is unfolded, you could see purely the gradient of own / share spaces keep changing all along. And when it is compressed in reality, the space is connected by void, creating visual and acoustic connections. An animation is made to present the changing of gradient and the quality of spaces.

Tutor: Charles Lai Site: Shing Mun Reservoir, Hong Kong Type: Academic B.Arch Project 2014 Summer (1 month)

The project is to design a hut along the trail. It is a popular place for people to get closer to nature. The most significant context of the reservoir is the water level and the trees. Hikers can experience two extremes of nature: in the rainy season, when the water level is high, trees are immersed in the water. In the dry season, hikers can walk closer to the center of the reservoir and see the roots of the trees exposed in the air.

The Reservoir Hut I want to enlarge the impact of change of nature. If the hiker comes to the hut at different time, they will see the different status of hut. The nature is the host while the hikers are the visitors. People start appreciating the nature in a humble manner.

Tutor: Eddy Yip Site: Oil Street, Hong Kong Type: Academic HDAS Project 2014 Spring (3 months)

The project is to design a new annex for the Art Promotion Office (APO), free out the administration office from the Grade II Historic Building. It is the last two buildings remained in Hong Kong that constructed by traditional unique roofing. The site is now operated by Oi! Which holds a lots of art program for public and artists.

APO New Annex The site is surrounded by high density of commercial office towers, Oi! acts as an oasis in the urban. It is a valuable building and region need to be protected and treasured. However, the most important is to let people notice it.

The walls act as a main element to block and guide the focus of people. The functional spaces are lifted up to create a covered underneath circulation and to a level that can appreciate the unique roofs of the existing historic building.

Partner: Bryan Szeto Site: West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong Type: Competition 2017 Summer

The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority has launched the competition, to design an ionic pavilion in the West Kowloon Nursery Park.

The Sparkle Pavilion I believe the colour between black and white is something more than gray. If we are willing to explore and take adventure, it could be something delights everyone, like a rainbow.

Owning to its unique topography and history, Hong Kong is a city with contradictory characteristics - from a mixture of east and western culture to the compact relationship between urban and natural environment, and even political views and metaphysical thinking; there are always clashes between the two distinctive sides. Inspired by such context, we separated the pavilion into two parts which are contrasting each other. The screen floating above the pavilion rose up as a cover and dropped down on the other side as seating, embraced the surroundings and the beautiful sea view.

By slotting a series of clear recycled acrylic panels, the triangle modules formed a structure that can be easily installed on site in two opposite directions - hanging from and standing on the screen. In addition, some aligned reflective surfaces are inserted and with a few shifting adjustment to the modules, they linked through the two space inside the pavilion and generated a combined effect of reflection and transparency, which changes from different angles and during day and night. Last but not the least, the ups and downs of modules defined the space for performance, workshop and informal seating and also served as shadings for the users.

At the centre of the pavilion, where the descending canopy touches the rising floor, the pendants merge with the up standings and the indoor space fuses with the outdoor area, all elements from the two distinctive sides combined together and a core is shaped. It is where the most interesting effect happens – light refracting through the wall of triangle modules and projecting a series of spectrum inside the core, which conveys that diversity coming from two opposite sides can initiate a new spectrum, so as the beauty of every contradictory realized in Hong Kong.

Partner: Bryan Szeto Site: Anywhere Type: Competition 2017 Summer

The 52nd theme of Central Glass International Architecutral Design Competition is “Redesigning Urban Open Space”. What are urban open spaces like today? Bearing social trends in mind, urban open spaces ought to be redesigned so that people are playing the leading roles.

Lives Streaming If I have to conclude the project into one sentence, I would say “Sharing the people is more exciting than sharing the space.”

What it brings > What it is

Urban open space is not depended on the function of space, but depended on how human induced actions in such a public area. Therefore, it is a condition more than a functional area.

Lives Streaming can apply on all the blank spaces in urban. Connecting different cities around the world, breaking through the distance and time differences. Streaming of urban open space send 1 to 1 scale image and voice to two sides instantly, giving opportunities to build relationship among others incidentally. And it is continuously assimilated into people’s daily lives.

Globalization is the biggest social trend today. Urban open space should play the main role of getting people together, breaking all the invisible barriers. There is no any other better way than knowing a culture through a person face to face.
