Capella Sydney transforms a heritage-listed government building into a world-class luxury hotel while successfully celebrating its original architecture. The design focuses on the restoration and refurbishment of the original architecture, while also envisioning contemporary amenities typical of a luxury hotel.
Various architectural lighting elements such as wall lights, downlights and inground uplights are utilised to accentuate these framed portals, welcoming guests to each space they venture into.
Both the architecture and interiors harmoniously reflect the building’s heritage, guiding guests through a captivating journey. Across the entire hotel, a design language of layers and framed portals evokes a sense of timeless existence yet with a thoroughly modern touch.
Collaboratively designed interior joineries and built-in ceilings facilitate the integration and concealment of lighting elements. Extensive coordination with architects, electrical engineers, and other external consultants was essential to successfully achieve the desired lighting effects while preserving the building’s heritage elements.
The presence of heritage-protected ceilings and skylights presents a unique challenge for the lighting design, requiring illumination of the space without altering the ceiling while maintaining the distinct luxury hotel ambiance.

Rosewood Villa Magna represents the debut of the Rosewood brand in Spain, undergoing a swift but comprehensive makeover from the existing Villa Magna hotel. Dating back to the 1970s, Villa Magna had firmly established itself as a prominent landmark in the city.
The design brief aimed to preserve the spirit of the existing hotel while implementing transformation that would resonate with the evolving preferences of both travellers and locals, infused with Rosewood identity.
This project presented challenges to retain its existing condition whilst simultaneously renovating with new, modern approaches. The solutions were to design joinery pieces with integrated concealed lighting where the existing ceilings cannot be modified. With this strategy, the required lighting levels were successfully achieved while creating soft indirect lighting effect throughout the hotel.
The hotel’s ground floor underwent a complete transformation to offer a range of interconnected F&B areas, anchored by a central courtyard. The lighting design is unique in each of these spaces through various architectural lighting atmospheres and distinctive decorative fixtures. The design achieved is contemporary yet timeless, creating a residential feel and a characteristic that captures the spirit of Madrid.
Custom decorative lighting pieces produced by local manufacturers were used to support limited project budget, whilst still adding personalised touches to each space for general ambience.

Lighting was carefully designed to achieve a balance of cool daylight reflecting from the white snow while maintaining the warm and cosy ambience by highlighting the use of warm natural finishes throughout the resort.
The project is grounded in a lighting design that immediately creates a homely atmosphere for guests, delicately enhances the warm interior ambience, and fosters a strong connection to the natural surroundings enveloping the hotel.
Various architectural elements such as fireplaces and feature materials are incorporated throughout the project and accentuated by considered lighting, contributing to the feeling of welcoming retreat.
Furthermore, bespoke lighting designs for the different F&B areas enrich the diverse range of experience available within the resort.
Being a luxury ski resort, we worked very closely with the client and art consultant in the curation of artworks to ensure that art pieces are highlighted with the best lighting solutions. Custom decorative lighting is frequently tailored for hotel projects, particularly for guestrooms, given the large number of rooms. Beyond cost management, these bespoke fixtures impart a personalised touch, as they can be crafted to align seamlessly with the interior design and reflect the hotel’s unique branding. Similarly, custom decorative lighting is also crafted for prominent statement pieces in public areas, offering flexibility in design, proportion, and lighting effects to complement the overall interior design scheme.
During the design documentation phase, line drawings are generated to complete the package for tendering and costing, as well as to provide the selected manufacturer with the necessary information to create shop drawings.
The design process commences in the concept phase, where the design intent is visualised through 2D Photoshop renderings within the interior design concept. Following feedback from client and hotel operator, the design progresses into a 3D model to further study proportions, finishes, and lighting integration in relation to the interior space during design development.
Continuous coordination with the manufacturer is essential during the review of shop drawings, finish samples, and prototypes to ensure the quality and successful execution of the decorative lighting manufacturing process.
