FORUM 1 SUMMARY

FORUM 2 SUMMARY

1. Topic: Rethinking Building Codes & Building Regulations post-pandemic

1. Topic: Passive & Active Fire Systems

Due to COVID-19, new norms forces designers to reassess certain aspects of spaces, to play their part in flattening the curve.

Both passive and active fire systems work hand in hand to buy people more time to escape, in the event of a fire. Passive fire protection focuses on preventing fires from happening and spreading, while active fire protection focuses on suppressing fires which have already started. An effective fire protection strategy is compartmentalization, which is a PFP system, through the use of fire rated walls/floors/doors and dampers thereby containing the spread of the fire/smoke in its own area. Another method is to have a well maintained sprinkler system, although it could fail due to the lack of maintenance, frozen pipes, or inadequate water pressure.

The first is space planning to adjust the size of spaces or consider one-way circulations to accommodate physical distancing. For certain spaces, building by-laws also should be amended to give a clear guide and to ensure designers create spaces that are safe. Second aspect is the design, where good ventilation (air flow, humidity) should be prioritized to reduce air transmissions, whether it is by natural ventilation or using UV-light air filters. New materials that reduce surface transmission can be considered, or just use easy to clean surfaces. Also design creative methods to remind people of physical distancing, using floor design, to make it part of the whole experience. Also look into touch-free technology, like motion/voice/facial sensors, foot handles, mobile technology.

Last aspect is to reassess programming or the types of spaces that are being built. Studies have shown an increase in use of green spaces in cities with stay-at-home orders. They become a place of escape and refuge. For designers, consider the potential of unused spaces like rooftops to integrate green spaces which prioritizes individual activity over team sports.

Although both PFP and AFP are both important, PFP systems should perhaps be prioritized slightly more because it protects the structural integrity of the building and reduces the likelihood of collapse which is extra dangerous. Finally, PFP system is the first responder towards a fire and if it is strategized effectively, will stop the fire altogether by merely containing it.

PDW ONG SHER ROU 0337037 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE FORUM 3 SUMMARY 1. Topic: Preliminaries Preliminaries occur in the Bill of Quantities which is common in many tender document. A BQ comprises of preliminaries, preambles and measured works. The purpose of Preliminaries in BQ is to provide information, obligations and liabilities, of the project concerning tenderers. It is normally priced by those tenderers too. Preliminaries are grouped into: 1 Project, parties 2 Description of site 3 Drawings and other documents 4 Form, type and conditions of contract 5 Contractor's liability 6 Employer's liability 7 Obligations and restrictions imposed by the Employer 8 Works by Nominated Sub-Contractors 9 Goods and materials from Nominated Suppliers 10 Works by government or statutory authorities 11 Works or goods and materials by the Employer 12 Pricing 13 Contingencies The items found in the preliminaries section of a BQ are hardest to price and because each contractor has his own idea of pricing preliminaries. If the costs end up higher than priced, it will be borne by the contractor, possible incurring no profits or even a loss. Therefore the description of preliminary items must be definitive to provide a clear understanding for contractors, hence promote better price accuracy. Reliable descriptions of preliminary items that are easy to comprehend lead to reliable tender prices.

ONG SHER ROU 0337037 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 2 PDW SUMMARY Professional Development Week took place on week 8 virtually. There were many workshops available, ranging from sector focused topics, to general topics. The mandatory sector focused workshop was by Veritas Architects on the Best Practices in Portfolio Preparation for Architectural Design. It was about how to prepare a resume and portfolio that would give you an edge against other applicants. The speaker started off the talk with a fact, that the average recruiter only spends 7.4 seconds reviewing a resume, so, less than 8 seconds to make an impression. To have an eye-catching resume, include a mission statement and objective at the top of your resume because people want to know you have a direction. Also have appropriate font sizing, bulleted points, relevant keywords and a clear flow. The speaker also laid out some rules. Keep everything simple, utilize words in job description, design your resume and focus on specific accomplishments. Moving to portfolios, there is the resume portfolio and the interview portfolio, to showcase previous works. Focus on your roles, the visual composition, and keep file size low. Finally, for interview guidelines, dress accordingly, learn all you can about the company, and come prepared for certain questions. I also attended the talk by Qwork on Navigating the Gig Economy. Basically, Qwork is an online platform for people to advertise for gigs and skills. It is quite helpful to have gigs in this current pandemic due to the affected economy and unemployment. This workshop is informative because I have done freelance designing jobs and would like to have more when I graduate, but I wasn’t aware of online platforms like this, so I will look into Qwork after graduation. Financial Literacy by Stashaway which is a fund managing company, talked about personal finance and basics in investment. Firstly is to clarify all your liabilities and assets and move towards your intended goal for the next decade or so. Next, identify day to day expenses, even the little ones because it builds up over time. It is important to quantify your goals. How do we prioritise goals? Firstly, pay off debts, save for emergency, retirement, other investment goals, then the rest can be enjoyed. By AirAsia on Surviving your First 30 Days and Beyond, the speaker who is an alumnus of Taylor’s, mostly shared about his journey and career. He was very involved in extracurricular activities, in AIESEC, student council, Orientation Leaders, which gave him a boost in learning about working with people. He then got an internship opportunity with HSBC where he discovered banking wasn’t for him. He eventually transitioned into AirAsia where he worked his way up the ladder. What I learnt from this talk was to pursue what you are passionate about because that is what will carry you through the job. Also, people skills are extremely important, learning to speak your mind tactfully. Due to technical difficulties, I also rewatched on Times the Recruiter’s Insights by VoxEureka, and Lessons from the Creative Media Industry by WildSnapperTV. From VoxEureka, the speaker shared mostly on job finding tips. He also shared on what to look for as applicants, which is fair remuneration, a boss who matches your value and a conducive learning environment. About the Creative Media Industry, it is not related to me as an Interior Designer but the speaker shared tips that are applicable to other industries as well. What I learnt from her is that networking and connections are important especially for creative industries. Also, explore what you like, get to know your strengths. Be fluid in your career findings. Overall, PDW was good information for a soon-to-be graduate as a lot of the talks helped us to be more prepared and know what to expect.
