Frozen Food Shines As Consumers Continue To Seek Convenience By Brian Young, Chief Executive - British Frozen Food Federation The next two months are critical for BFFF members in delivering and achieving sales in this peak selling season. It is also a busy time for the BFFF team with our fabulous Luncheon being held at the Hilton, our AGM and the time of the year when the Board reflects on how effective we have been as a Board, Chairman and Chief Executive. It is also a significant time for the team at BFFF in terms of our key players. I am really sorry to say goodbye to Su Dakin who has been an incredibly valuable asset to us and our members since her time with us and she has moved our technical service on by leaps and bounds. The recruitment process is now underway but I am pleased to advise that we have interim cover on a part-time basis from Martin Forsyth previously of Bidvest Foodservice. Martin has committed to support us from just before Su leaves, for his induction, and then for 3 months. He has served on the BFFF Technical Expert Group for many years and has worked at a senior level both in Retail and Wholesale and is ideal interim cover. At the same time, I am delighted to welcome Paul Murray into the fold as Head of Commercial. He has vast industry knowledge, particularly from the catering and foodservice side which will be invaluable to us as we drive the Federation forward. Don’t Miss The Business Conference Designed Just For You! The BFFF Business Conference and Exhibition will be taking place on Tuesday 1st March 2016 at the Chesford Grange Hotel, Kenilworth. Around 250 delegates will be attending comprising producers, wholesalers, end users and retailers. Anyone who is anyone will be at this fabulous event. Patrick Dixon is our morning keynote speaker and will set the scene by looking at 'How Innovation and Technology will Help Shape our Future'. Ali Hannaford of Paramount 21, Andrew Selley of Bidvest Foodservice, Ian Stone of apetito and 4
Sarah Bradbury of Tesco will then provide case studies for their own businesses. In the afternoon speakers will look at 'The Brave New World' post the general election with James Walton from the IGD and Adam Leyland of the Grocer both confirmed. We are also awaiting confirmation from Defra that a Minister will be available to speak. Our afternoon inspirational speaker is Debra Searle who successfully rowed across the Atlantic - single-handed - after her husband fell ill and was winched from the boat mid-race. We provide a number of delegate packages in addition to attendance at the conference itself including: pre-conference dinner; conference dinner and exhibiting. The conference is a superb opportunity to network and discuss issues of the day whilst exhibitors have a wonderful opportunity to promote their products and services. For anyone associated with the frozen food industry, this is the business conference to attend. Why not book your place now by contacting hazelcranidge@bfff.co.uk. If you are interested in exhibiting, please contact katemiller@bfff. co.uk. Frozen Food Shines As Consumers Continue To Seek Convenience As consumer demand for convenience continues, the latest frozen food retail market statistics from Kantar Worldpanel show another period of steady growth. The figures, which look at the 52 weeks ending 13 September 2015, show that the value of the retail frozen food market has continued to grow by 0.4% year on year (yoy) to nearly £5.8bn.
growth in the frozen ready meal category which improved by 2.3% in value and 2.1% in volume yoy respectively. This growth highlights the continued consumer demand for nutritional, great value convenience foods. The figures show that frozen food continues to be a popular choice for consumers, as it provides a quick and convenient alternative for busy lifestyles. The phenomenal success of Slimming World’s healthy frozen ready meals, in partnership with Iceland, illustrates this perfectly. The success of the recently launched frozen food range, has seen a record-breaking number of meals, including Beef and Three-Bean Chilli Con Carne, Sweet Potato Curry and Chicken and Mediterranean Vegetable Pasta, purchased by both Slimming World members and shoppers who simply want to eat more healthily. We also believe that consumers are becoming more in favour of frozen food due to factors such as independent research into the nutritional value and cost of frozen food, premium NPD from the industry and third party endorsement from high profile chefs. It is imperative that frozen food manufacturers and brands continue to push innovation within all categories. Consumers are becoming increasingly savvy with frozen food and are falling back in love with their freezers, and so manufacturers must ensure they react to consumer needs if the frozen food retail market is to continue to grow. I look forward to seeing many of you at the BFFF Annual Luncheon or Industry Forum between now and Christmas and I would like to wish everyone every success in the run up to the festive period and hopefully we will all enjoy a wonderful Christmas and a very prosperous New Year.
One of the stand-out performers was the frozen pizza category which has grown in value by 4.3% and in volume by 5.1% yoy. Sales in the frozen savoury food category – which includes frozen bread – has also risen in value by 1.7%. The Kantar Worldpanel data also shows frozen & chilled foods

Food Town NEWS VINCE MCDONAGH reviews the latest food industry happenings in the Humber area NOMAD NETS FINDUS EUROPE AS YOUNG’S PREPARES FOR LIFE ALONE
with over 4,300 employees and production facilities in at least 15 countries.
THE Findus Group has finally completed the £500-million sale of its Findus brand rights and associated continental European businesses to Nomad Foods, the US group which has already captured The Igloo Group, owners of Birds Eye in the UK & Ireland.
Meanwhile, Nomad Foods which acquired Birds Eye owner Iglo Foods for almost £2-billion, has publicly declared an appetite for more frozen and chilled food deals. Nomad was set up over a year ago as a cash vehicle by tycoons Martin E Franklin and Noam Gottesman.
The deal now leaves Grimsby-based Young’s Seafood as the main business within the group which will continue to be supported by its existing group investors, the company said. These include Highbridge Principal Strategies, Lion Capital LLP and Sankaty Advisors, through the governance mechanism of a new holding company entitled Young’s Seafood International Holdings Ltd. James Hill, Chief Executive of Young’s Seafood International Holdings (formerly, Findus Group) said: “Today’s sale transaction involving Findus marks a significant, positive milestone for the European food industry and its principal stakeholders.
Nomad has recently been linked with quite a few names including Quorn, the British meatfree food maker, as part of its growth plan. High Liner Foods, the Canadian frozen seafood company has also been flagged up, but the company has so far declined to comment on this speculation.
“Young’s Seafood Limited is already the UK’s leading fish processor, with unparalleled expertise and track record in bringing great seafood to market, be that frozen or chilled, Young’s or retailer branded.” He added: “With the Findus transaction now behind us, we shall redouble our drive for improvement in Young’s, focussing on our customers, our market share and our processing efficiency.” Pete Ward, Chief Executive of Young’s Seafood, said in a statement: “Our mission is to inspire consumers to eat more seafood in their diet with our innovative range of high quality, good value, great tasting, responsibly-sourced products. “We are embarking on a journey of Virtual Integration with our best suppliers, working as partners, driving improvements for mutual and sustainable benefits. We are focussed on building up our sales, driving down our costs, adapting to changes in the market and futureproofing Young’s. “We are optimistic for this new phase and, with the support of our investors, we will continue to deliver for our customers and our consumers.” The deal means that in less than a year Nomad has gone from a standing start to a business
6
Stéfan Descheemaeker, Nomad Foods' Chief Executive Officer, stated, "Overall, results were in line with our expectations at the acquisition, taking into account the difficult retail environment in Iglo Group's core geographies. In response to market conditions, we have selectively increased promotion levels to remain relevant to value-seeking consumers whilst maintaining profitability and cash generation through rigorous control of the cost base. We have also continued to rejuvenate our portfolio via the launch of the Breakfast Platform in Italy and the Wholegrain Platform across all major markets. As we look to the future, we believe Nomad is well positioned to take advantage of numerous growth opportunities across Western Europe and globally, not only within the frozen food category, but also within the broader packaged food space." Noam Gottesman, Nomad Foods' Co-Chairman and Founder, commented: "Stéfan and his team have created a strong platform to lead the consolidation in the fragmented global food sector. "The Iglo acquisition is performing as expected and we are excited about other potential acquisitions opportunities that meet our criteria of being market leaders in niche markets and having a long history of strong free cash flow generation. He added: "The momentum we have achieved thus far in 2015 have us well positioned to achieve meaningful long-term growth both organically as well as through prudent and complementary M&A opportunities." Stefan Descheemaeker, Nomad’s chief executive, said the results were in line with expectations, given the difficult retail environment across the group’s core
geographies. The food boss said that Nomad had increased promotions on some of its products to appeal to value-seeking customers, while introducing new items, such as wholegrain chicken nuggets, across its markets. "As we look to the future, we believe Nomad is well positioned to take advantage of numerous growth opportunities across Western Europe and globally, not only within the frozen food category, but also within the broader packaged food space." said Mr Descheemaeker. NORTH SEA COD ON WAY BACK THANKS TO SEAFOOD PARTNERSHIP A globally unique partnership between fishermen's organisations, processors and retailers announced at the World Seafood Congress in Grimsby that there is sufficient widespread confidence in the recovery of North Sea cod stocks that the fishery will be assessed for certification to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) global standard for sustainability. If successful it would mean North Sea cod would be able to hit supermarket shelves with a MSC certified sustainable ecolabel for the first time. This historic assessment, which is expected to be commissioned in early 2016, is being pioneered and funded by a globally unique client group partnership consisting of fishermen's organisations, processors and retailers. Icelandic Seachill are leading an application to the Seafish Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) fund to support the assessment, and this has successfully passed the first stage. Members currently providing a financial contribution and support in kind include Icelandic Seachill, the Scottish Fisheries Sustainable Accreditation Group (SFSAG), Marks & Spencer, WM Morrison, and Sainsbury’s, whilst the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations (NFFO) and Young’s Seafood are supporting the assessment in kind. North Sea cod is consumed primarily in the UK and European market where consumers are increasingly aware of the role they play in choosing sustainably sourced seafood. Its historical decline has been well documented by media and it has become a focal point of campaigns by NGO’s. If successful, MSC certified sustainable North Sea cod will have a dramatic effect on consumer confidence and buying habits, enabling new generations to enjoy this wonderful fish safe in the knowledge
frozen & chilled foods
Food Town NEWS that it’s sustainable. Nigel Edwards, Technical and CSR Director at Grimsby-based Icelandic Seachill comments: “Icelandic Seachill is incredibly proud to be part of this unique partnership to secure the sustainability credentials of this iconic fishery. The status of North Sea cod is a barometer used frequently by the media to represent the sustainability of fish in general. This certification, if successful, will underline the incredible recovery of cod following the successful MSC certification of the Icelandic cod (for which Icelandic Seachill was the client) and Barents Sea cod that supply our nation’s huge appetite for this delicious fish. It’s great to see all levels of the supply chain working together with a common goal of sustainable fisheries and we hope to emulate this partnership to secure the recovery and certification of fisheries. Peter Ward, CEO of Young’s Seafood said; ‘This news is the result of many years of hard work by many people, it is a symbolic achievement for the UK seafood sector and speaks volumes for a collective passion and commitment to improving sustainability in our own waters. Meanwhile, Pete Ward has called on the industry to continue to champion best practice across sustainability, manufacturing, innovation and quality. Speaking at the World Seafood Congress in Grimsby in September he outlined both the heritage and the strategic opportunities currently open to the sector. Mr Ward said: “This sector is important not just to our communities but also to the future of the world’s population. Protein demand will grow, as the global population increases and that responsibly sourced fish can play a key role in helping to ensure fewer people go hungry. For our sector to adapt to the changes taking place on a global scale, our industry needs to take a long term view and champion best practice and responsible sourcing.” SAUCY FISH MOVES INTO BELGIUM THE Saucy Fish Co. is expanding into Belgium
with four products being stocked exclusively in 808 Delhaize stores nationwide. The Belgium range will include Saucy’s new Cod Loin with Beurre Blanc Sauce, exclusive to the Belgium market, in addition to Salmon Fillet with Thai Cuisine Sauce in both 160g and 280g portion sizes, along with the brand’s popular Sea Bass with Beurre Blanc Sauce. The Saucy Fish Co. Belgium will debut in a national Delhaize roadshow, along with a print ad in the supermarket’s consumer magazine. The brand have also launched a new Facebook page with content in both Flemish and French, and they intend to launch a dual-language Belgian website next year. This news follows a series of international expansion announcements as the Grimsby based brand, part of the Icelandic international seafood company, moved into the US and Australia last year. Since launching in 2010, The Saucy Fish Co. has gone from strength-to-strength, aiming to provide shoppers with the inspiration and ease to cook fish confidently at home. In just five years, the innovative young brand has transformed the way millions of people think about fish. Paul Macis, International and Business Development Manager at The Saucy Fish Co. UK comments: “We’re very pleased to be partnering with Delhaize to introduce The Saucy Fish Co. brand to Belgium. International growth is a core part of Saucy's strategy so we're delighted to have this major listing secured within a leading European retailer.”
over the coming months.” YOUNG'S GASTRO RANGE A MAJOR BOOSTER FOR YOUNG'S YOUNG'S Seafood is continuing to make great strides in fish dish innovation. The Grimsby-based company has expanded its Gastro range of fish dishes which has already become one of the fastest growing food lines in the country. The Gastro brand, which has grown by 50 per cent in the last 12 months alone, is now worth £30-million annually from a standing start back in 2012. Young’s has introduced four new dishes which the company says provides a solution for every occasion. Each dish has been specially created by the Young’s chef, inspired by exciting culinary trends and global flavours: They are: Gastro Lemon and Herb Tempura Wholetail Scampi; Two new Gastro natural fish variants and a Gastro fish pie. Fish lovers are already enjoying the new dishes which hit the supermarket a couple of weeks ago. Yvonne Adam, Marketing Director at Young’s said the company had drawn from global culinary trends and gastro pub favourites. “Our Young’s Gastro brand aims to grow the category by encouraging people to eat more fish, by making fish more tasty and ultra-easy to prepare,” she added.
Kathleen Van Maele, Marketing and Product Manager at Icelandic Gaudus comments: “Following the success of the brand’s other international launches; we’re very excited to be introducing The Saucy Fish Co. to a new market in Belgium. Having developed a range of products tailored to Belgian tastes, we’re confident the products will be well received and look forward to seeing the brand take off

Artisan Pitas comes to the UK: Nina Bakery launches frozen pita range Nina Bakery, a leading producer of artisan pita bread, has launched its new range of ‘no tear’, stone oven pitas in the UK. A specialist in pita, with 80 years’ experience baking, Nina Bakery is known throughout Europe for producing clean label breads that do not tear easily and this new range is no exception. The bakery’s show centerpiece is a cocktail size pita, which has been designed specifically for appetizers, tapas and cocktail hors d'œuvres. At just 6cm, the micro pita demonstrates that when baked well even the smallest of pitas will remain intact. A characteristic moist and fluffy texture - the signature of great pita - the new range is fully baked frozen. Nina Bakery Artisan Pitas are available in a selection of sizes – the 6 cm, 18 gram ‘cocktail’, to the 18cm, 200 gram XL - and come in a variety of shapes. Like all Nina Bakery products, the new range of pitas are made using only traditional, artisan methods for a higher quality bake, the result is a superior pita of restaurant quality. Slow food process and stone oven baked, the pitas, are produced using only the purest ingredients with no preservatives and additives. Baked with minimum quantities of yeast and no added sugar or fat, Nina’s pitas are clean label which means no preservatives and improvers (E numbers) are used. A marked return to slow food values “Today there are many quickly produced products which just don’t taste the same because they are mass produced and as cheaply as possible,” said Nina Bakery’s CEO, Pierre Nehmeh. “That’s why we have returned to traditional methods - the resultant taste is just so much better.”
“Because of the bake quality and because they do not tear easily, Nina’s pita breads are perfect for sandwich fillings.” he explained. “Our products, which are of restaurant quality, are perfectly suited to the catering industry and retail food outlets." Nina Bakery is a family-run business which has been operating for 80 years, and distributes from the Netherlands to customers across Europe. www.ninabakery.eu
A MIGHTY MEATY SHARING PLATTER Adding a new dimension to Sharing Platters is Snowbird foods. The company offers a selection of award-winning mini sausages and burgers, meatbites, poppers and meatballs, so caterers can offer a Mighty Meaty Platter that will generate serious repeat business. Poppers are exciting meatballs with attitude – the difference is that they have a selection of built-in flavours. Beef is teamed with ginger, turkey with cranberry (or a spicy and fruity alternative), lamb with apricot and pork with BBQ flavouring. There is also a chicken variant. 8
Mini burgers are always popular and there are award-wining sausages like 12g. pork cocktails. There is a range of sausage coins which includes pork and beef, beef, Cumberland, Lincolnshire free range and Halal. The big three meatballs are beef, lamb and pork (in smallish sizes for sharing!) and even smaller are 4g. pork meatbites and a memorably flavoursome Merguez Beef option. For variety (and a vegetarian option) there are stuffing balls flavoured with lemon and thyme, chestnut
and thyme and the long-lasting favourite, sage and onion. “Many of these products are musthave buffet items which have proved enduringly popular so it is a natural extension of their use to present them as a sharing platter,” said Snowbird commercial and marketing director, Roy Anderson. All the products are delivered fully cooked and frozen and can quickly be heated in a microwave or an oven – or just fully defrosted for cold service.

Iceland to launch a supermarket first with Frozen Soup Because it’s Frozen You Can Enjoy Homemade Style Soups Without The Hassle October marked the launch of Iceland’s exciting and pioneering first to market a mouth-watering frozen soup range. Two specially created ranges of frozen soups will be released; the inviting ‘Soups of The World’ and comforting ‘Everyday Soups’. This is the latest innovation from Iceland who are committed to delivering quality and convenience to its customers. Iceland always takes pride in its food quality and these special soup ranges are no different. The frozen food specialist maximises the quality of ingredients by harnessing its expertise and the #PowerOfFrozen. Once the individual ingredients are frozen all the flavours are locked in at the peak of freshness to provide an amazing authentic taste. By freezing the soups it allows Iceland to keep the product delicious without adding any chemical additives. Each soup serves two for just £1.50 and the perfect dish to have stocked in the freezer making it perfect for a quick supper or a working lunch. So curl up on those dark chilly evenings when you need that wholesome, warm, comforting dinner. These no fuss, quick and easy soups are a great way to pack in vegetables with the added bonus of enjoying a home-made style soup without the peeling and chopping. Timeless favourite Tomato and Basil, plus the deliciously fiery Tom Kha Soup are joined by eight others in the exciting new ranges. The Tom Kha Soup is heavily influenced by its Thai origins bringing together succulent chicken breast, oriental vegetables, coconut milk, infused with fragrant lime leaves and lemon grass. The ingredients for the Tomato and Basil soup are sourced directly from the Turin vegetable market – just a stone’s throw from where it’s
produced. So unlike other supermarket soups, this range is brimming with taste with no artificial additives or preservatives in sight. These will go from freezer to bowl in less than 12 minutes. Long gone are the days of time consuming, messy soup making, these are the perfect grab and go meal. Nigel Broadhurst, Iceland Joint Managing Director says, “This product is a supermarket first in home-made style frozen soups. We cook it in the exact same way as you would at home but on a larger scale. No starches are used, and because it’s frozen the ingredients retain their natural flavours and ensure we provide our customers with the most flavoursome, freshest soup possible. It’s the new essential to have in your freezer for that quick go-to, filling meal. We can’t wait to hear what our customers think. All I can say is it will quickly become your go-to meal this winter.”

Charing-based Ardo UK Ltd is part of international Belgian Ardo Group, Europe's largest supplier of frozen fruit and vegetables. It supplies frozen fruit and vegetables to the UK's leading supermarket chains and to the catering trade. The increased range follows last year's merger with Dujardin's Rosemary and Thyme, who are based in Suffolk and are the only supplier of UK-grown frozen herbs. Rosemary and Thyme also supply food ingredients to the UK industrial market.
Stuart Hiscott, Ardo's Marketing Manager, said: "Our 'Fine Herbes' range provides an easy way to add flavour to meals without the disadvantage of waste or time spent chopping. They also have all of the other advantages associated with frozen food such as higher nutritional content and easier portion control, so you can pop the unused herbs back in the

There’s no doubt that our ability to live up to our promise and consistently deliver a cost-effective, true 7 day delivery to all delivery points service has been instrumental in our continued success. “Another key trend we are seeing is customers expanding to use both our frozen and our chilled services. Going forward, we think it is likely that all of the major retailers will look to a combined temperature controlled distribution provider to give greater certainty of supply and simplify the logistics process.” Based in North Yorkshire, Reed Boardall is one of the leading temperature controlled food distribution businesses in the UK, storing and delivering frozen food from manufacturers across Britain, Europe and further afield to all of the UK’s best-known supermarkets. Operating 24/7, the company’s 180-strong fleet of vehicles moves an average of 12,000 pallets a day, and stores around £100m worth of products on behalf of its customers. Operating from a single 55 acre site in Boroughbridge, which is the largest of its kind in Europe, the company employs over 750 staff. Keith Boardall, chief executive of Reed Boardall, comments: “Our long experience in this niche sector means that we understand only too well that supply chain security is critical. Our customers have the peace of mind of knowing that they can rely on the resilience and expertise of a well-established cold storage and distribution partner whatever situation arises. From having our own electricity generating capability and a sophisticated IT infrastructure with state-ofthe-art virtual servers running on distributed hardware, we have invested in ensuring that we are as self-sufficient as possible in order to minimise risk to our customers.” As well as the mammoth storage space available with four high tech cold stores, Reed Boardall 14

FROZEN & CHILLED FOODS Temperature Controlled Logistics
Integrating the supply chain Eelco Schnabel, Commercial Director at Partner Logistics, looks at the challenges in store for the temperature controlled logistics market and the benefits of supply chain integration…
Therefore they need a more comprehensive plan to seamlessly link their supply chain operation, and this is where integrated logistics plays a crucial role.
With modern frozen food manufacturers and producers becoming increasingly market-driven, supply chain management in the temperature-controlled logistics market has evolved from a necessity to a strategic priority for enhancing a competitive advantage.
Through working with a logistics provider that offers multiple services such as warehousing, transport and value-added services under one roof, manufacturers can add significant value to their supply chain.
With rising export volumes, increased production and the changing retail market heralded as the biggest challenges that lie ahead for the industry, it’s the responsibility of third party logistics providers to ensure that they can provide the services which will help their customers to grow and thrive in a highly competitive and pressurised market.
FLEXIBILITY With growing demand for frozen food products in emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, flexibility is growing in importance for manufacturers with a desire to enter new markets. Flexibility is one of the biggest benefits of having an integrated end-to-end supply chain. With strong relationships between suppliers, operations teams have the ability to respond far more quickly to changes such as increased production and a rise in consumer demand.
INTEGRATION If manufacturers choose to outsource each link of their supply chain separately they often struggle to achieve full optimisation and express concern that they have growing management overheads and less time to focus on core areas of their business. 18
In turn, agility increases resilience in unexpected circumstances. As seen during the horsemeat scandal in 2013, supply chains are vulnerable and contaminated products must be located and removed as quickly as possible. This is far easier if there are only one or two providers involved in the chain who work closely with one another on a day-to-day basis.
COST SAVINGS Cost savings are an important driver in any integrated logistics provider’s strategy. By working closely with customers and building a solid partnership, progressive logistics providers can proactively identify weak spots in the supply chain and provide solutions to streamline the process and ultimately save money. Many third party providers have also adapted to incorporate a number of value-added logistics services into their portfolio such as re-packaging, cross docking and inverting pallets which can all be part of creating a tailored plan that adds real value and helps their customers to meet supply chain objectives whilst saving on costs. EFFICIENCY With mounting pressure to meet tighter deadlines, integrated logistics providers support manufacturers in streamlining their operations whilst not impacting on performance. At Partner Logistics, they have developed ‘Customer 360’, a series of regular operational, strategic and tactical meetings with their customers to monitor performance and understand their changing business needs. As part of this they develop projects where a number of their customers can work together to optimise complete supply chain flow, yielding far more synergy than they do individually. www.partnerlogistics.eu

Chris Sturman, Chief Executive of the FSDF
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the Chief Executive
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I am still absolutely amazed, humbled and delighted that my peers in the industry should give me the honour of the TCS&D 2015 lifetime achievement award. As I said at the time, I have very much enjoyed my career in this fascinating industry, trying to be of service to customers and it’s very flattering to be recognised in this way. However, I am not finished quite yet and also hope to put something back by encouraging young men and women to develop their careers in this exciting sector. I would like to also congratulate all the other award winners, particularly FSDF member companies whose achievements and excellence were recognised in the awards they gained. Moving swiftly on, those of you who qualify for ESOS will be aware that a deadline is fast approaching, so please read on to ensure that you comply with your obligations. The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme Regulations (ESOS) A reminder that you really need to check whether or not you are in the scope of ESOS. If you are and have not already taken steps to comply then there is no time to lose! By 5th December 2015 you need to submit your ESOS notification of compliance to the Environment Agency, having carried out an ESOS assessment. What is ESOS? ESOS was established by the UK Government to implement Article 8(4-6) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU) and is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations that meet the qualifying criteria. The UK administrator is the Environment Agency and organisations that qualify for ESOS must carry out assessments every four years. Who Qualifies? Only “large undertakings” qualify, defined as follows: • A UK company that on 31 December 2014 either: • Employs 250 or more people
20
• Has an annual turnover in excess of 50 million euros (£38,937,777) and an annual balance sheet total in excess of 43 million euros (£33,486,489) • Is an overseas company with a UK registered establishment that has 250 or more UK employees (paying income tax in the UK) • Corporate groups qualify if at least one UK group member meets the above definition. Compliance with ESOS If you qualify for ESOS and your organisation is fully covered by the Energy Management Standard ISO 50001, you don’t need to carry out another ESOS assessment, you just need to notify the Environment Agency that you are compliant with ESOS. If you qualify for ESOS but your organisation is not fully covered by ISO 50001 you need to carry out an ESOS assessment which will help you work out what your organisation needs to do to comply with the ESOS regulations. The assessment takes into account energy directly covered by Display Energy Certificates (DEC’s), Green Deal Assessments (GDA’s) or ISO 50001. ESOS Assessment Steps 1. Calculate your total energy consumption This is the energy used by assets held or activities carried out by your organisation or group, including energy consumed by buildings, industrial processes and transport. 2. Identify your areas of significant energy consumption This is the energy used by assets held or activities carried out by your organisation that account for at least 90% of your total consumption. You then need to: • Find out if any of these are covered by ISO 50001, DEC’s or GDA’s • Identify if ESOS compliant energy audits have been, or need to be, carried out for these areas not covered by ISO 50001, DEC’s or GDA’s
contractors as long as they are members of an approved professional body. Their purpose is to carry out and oversee or review your energy audits and overall ESOS assessment. 4. Notify the Environment Agency Once you have undertaken an ESOS assessment and are compliant with your obligations you need to submit your ESOS notification of compliance to the Environment Agency. This must be done by 5th December 2015 and then, if applicable, every four years. 5. Keep records You will need to keep an evidence pack which clearly shows how you have complied with ESOS. There is no set format for this currently. Non-compliance Penalties for non-compliance are considerable and can include financial penalties of up to £50,000. If you need any help at all with any of the ESOS regulations, we have associate members and our CCA management partner, Jacobs, who will be able to help. At the same time, the Government has issued a consultation concerning energy efficiency and the Climate Change Levy with a view to further simplification of the various schemes that are currently in existence. Rest assured that FSDF will be protecting your interests and working hard to ensure that any amendments or simplification will be in members’ best interest. In Conclusion So as you can see, the work of the Federation continues apace with a number of meetings with Government departments and other trade bodies to discuss various subjects that may have an impact upon our members’ businesses. If you are not a member of FSDF and would like to find out how to join us, please contact the team at Reading. Chris Sturman

Cold Store Safety
Footwear Specialists
Manufacturers of safety footwear since 1997, Rock Fall UK are a major manufacturer of cold store safety boots. Rock Fall`s core focus is product innovation through the research of the latest components and materials and footwear featuring their enhanced cold insulation system which is ideal for those working in challenging conditions. Using advanced components such as 3M Thinsulate ® B600 lining, their footwear products are specified by blue chip companies throughout the UK and worldwide, via specially selected distributors. Their approved distribution partner in the UK is the leading supplier of specialist temperature equipment Gold Freeze (tel: 0845 643 4753 email: sales@goldfreeze.co.uk). 3M Thinsulate ® insulation lining is the ultimate in thermal protection. The Thinsulate ® linings they use offer a high level of both insulation and moisture absorption making them ideal in all climates. Thinsulate ® insulation works by trapping air molecules between the wearer and the outside, the more air a material traps in a given space, the greater its insulation value. Because the microfibres in Thinsulate ® insulation are far finer than other fibres, they trap more air in less space, which naturally makes it a better insulation. So, Rock Fall haven`t repealed the laws of nature with their thin insulation, they have simply obeyed them better ..... to your advantage. Rock Fall would be delighted to arrange wearer trials and meetings to show their products and this can be done by calling them on 01733 608616 or by emailing them at sales@rockfall.co.uk

REWARDING EXCELLENCE IN THE PERISHABLE SUPPLY CHAIN
With over 400 attendees, the TCS&D Awards 2015 Dinner was a glittering event held to reward excellence in the perishable product supply chain.
NOTHING can stop the industry getting to the TCS&D Awards..! Remnants of tropical storm Henri arrived over Peterborough on the 16th September, just as over 400 guests to the TCS&D Awards Dinner alighted from their vintage London double decker buses. Last year it was a traffic jam outside The National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, this year it was torrential rain, but still the industry battled through it and they were not disappointed – a fantastic evening awaited them. Once dried off, guests were served pre-dinner cocktails, courtesy of Gray & Adams and with eighteen awards to be won, they were eager to hear if they had been successful. Before the award ceremony took place guests were treated to a superb five course meal, with table wine sponsored by Seven Telematics and after dinner entertainment by comedian Hal Cruttenden. Then, the main event of the evening took place, the awards ceremony, hosted by Chris Sturman, CEO, Food Storage & Distribution Federation and Chairman of the TCS&D awards panel (full details of the winners in each category can be seen on the following pages, with judges comments as to why they won). Following the award presentations, guests were invited back to The Marriott Hotel for an “After Event” party, where they enjoyed a “fun” casino and, for those with a big appetite, a breakfast buffet through to 2am and beyond! The top four casino winners, were Brian Young, Lee Chapman, Nick Larcombe and Owen Cavell. The TCS&D Awards are now a firmly established event in the industry`s calendar and because of the tremendous response that we have had to this years event, we have decided to launch the 2016 Awards Dinner now to give everyone a chance to attend. So, in 2016 we return to The National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, the awards dinner will be held in the superb Britannia Suite and the pre-dinner drinks in the Manxman Suite, both suites are on ground level for easy access. Tickets are available at £170 + VAT each, with tables of 10 or 12 available. There will also be a number of outside spaces for exhibits on a “first come first served” basis. Accommodation has been reserved, at specially discounted rates, at the following hotels (so please do book early to avoid disappointment):Best Western PLUS Manor Hotel, Meriden (4.4 miles to NMM) Tel: 01676 522735 – Booking Code “TCS&D 2016 Awards Dinner” Single Room @ £115, including Breakfast, Service, VAT and Car Parking. CATEGORY | COLDSTORE MANAGER OF THE YEAR sponsored by CHALCROFT CONSTRUCTION, WINNER: JUSTIN SPIRES of NAGELLANGDONS LTD - REDDITCH DEPOT and the judges said: “Justin has managed cold stores for many years, but this award is based on his achievements for his current employer, who he joined in 2004. He played a major role in establishing a complex daily pick to zero chilled contract for a major client with an average 25,000 cases per day throughput. After seven years the company moved to a new purpose built site nearby and within 12 months they had won the frozen pick operation for the same client. Once again Justin rose to the challenge and the start up was a great success. Equally comfortable with high level negotiations or unloading trucks on the bay if required, he is very much a “hands on” manager who has made a very significant contribution to the success of the new depot.”

CATEGORY | REFRIGERATED FLEET MANAGER OF THE YEAR sponsored by BPW LTD WINNER: TYRONE LANAWAY of NAGELLANGDONS LTD and the judges said: “In this category the judges are looking for someone with proven technical expertise combined with excellent general management skills. Our winner started his career as an apprentice LGV technician at TNT’s Group Engineering Centre in Lancashire. After working for TNT for a few years he worked in truck dealerships and various other engineering jobs followed. After a spell working in Qatar he joined his company in April 2012. He soon introduced a Fleet Management system which interfaces with several other business functions. He has also been heavily involved in the company’s award winning apprenticeship scheme. More recently he oversaw the establishment of a new vehicle maintenance unit at the company’s Scottish depot which has resulted in the current level of 80% in-house maintenance across the 400 + vehicle fleet. Other achievements include substantial reductions in fuel consumption throughout the fleet and the introduction of on-board axle weighing systems linked to sophisticated vehicle telematics systems – all visible in the Traffic Offices across the depot network.” The award was presented to Tyrone by Steve Turton of BPW Ltd.
The award was presented to Amanda Brennan, Brian Brennan and Luke Devlin by Paul Burridge of Coolertech Ltd.
CATEGORY | COLDSTORE OPERATOR OF THE YEAR sponsored by THE FOOD STORAGE & DISTRIBUTION FEDERATION WINNER: CHILTERN COLD STORAGE GROUP LTD and the judges said: “Our winner offers bespoke cold storage services across several temperature regimes and has particular expertise in services for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry as well as many customers from the food sector. With 23,000 pallet spaces at their main site in Peterborough and other cold store operations in Bourne, Whittlesey and Livingston they were one of the first UK logistics companies to achieve BRC quality approval. It is unusual for a cold store operation of this size to have just one majority owner and the gentleman concerned should take great credit for building this business from scratch and having built a very loyal customer base – which is why the judges are recognising his company this evening.” The award was presented to John Davidson of Chiltern Cold Storage Group Ltd by Chris Sturman, CEO, The Food Storage & Distribution Federation.
CATEGORY | REFRIGERATED COURIER OF THE YEAR sponsored by COOLERTECH WINNER: PDQ SPECIALIST COURIER SERVICES and the judges said: “A hard fought category with high quality operators vying for the honours. The winner this year is a company which has been providing a “white glove service” to a range of pharmaceutical and food companies over the last 16 years. Their impressive customer range praise their service performance to demanding quality standards as being second to none, coupled to agility, responsiveness and customer communication excellence.” 28
judges said: “Home delivery is the big development issue within the retail sector, with customer expectations of being able to call for next day deliveries a given. The entrants in this category are all in the retail sector, and seeking to differentiate themselves in terms of service offer, as well as the technology of vehicles being used. Our winner this evening not only used vehicles which look good, but also have the technology to provide total confidence to the customer – as you can see in the show today!” The award was presented to Vanora Bullen and Darren Clipston of Iceland Foods Ltd by Mike Sanders of Rossetts Rental Self Drive Hire.
CATEGORY | REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT OPERATOR OF THE YEAR sponsored by ENTERPRISE FLEX-E-RENT WINNER: MCCULLA IRELAND LTD and the judges said: “A hard fought category with some very professionally produced and presented entries which were very hard to separate. All had strong customer recommendation support which justified them being in the short list. However, one above all stood out – from the innovations in equipment and technology positively impacting the service offer and the training and development of their staff. All of which has clearly come together to improved customer service, relationships and profitability.” The award was presented to Ashley McCulla of McCulla Ireland Ltd by Mark Howell of Enterprise Flex-E-Rent.

CATEGORY | LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT sponsored by SPAL AUTOMOTIVE UK LTD WINNER: CHRIS STURMAN, CEO, THE FOOD STORAGE & DISTRIBUTION FEDERATION and the judges said: “Chris began his career as a management trainee in the automotive industry before moving into the world of logistics with TDG, then running a haulage, forwarding and warehousing business, prior to getting involved in the food and drink industry. Firstly, he held general management roles with BRS Southern (the Mars Confectionery contract) and then moved into the frozen and chilled food sector with Ross Youngs at Grimsby. He was head hunted into Wincanton Distribution, then part of Unigate in the mid-1980’s where he became the Distribution Business Development Director, and led the business into contract distribution, successfully implementing major contracts with a range of food manufacturers and distributors. After six years with Wincanton he was co-founder Director of Compass Logistics International (now Bisham Consulting). In this role he undertook supply chain and project management assignments for a wide variety of companies operating in food manufacturing, retail and logistics. This led to him being invited to become managing director of West Kent Cold Storage Ltd in 1997 - an industrial property business with three locations providing services to a wide range of retail, wholesale and food service customers – some of which are FSDF members. After a hostile takeover, and the sale of the business, in 2003 he was asked to become Chief Executive of Linq Alliance, a consortium of 26 well known and respected transport and distribution businesses across the UK. Chris was appointed Chief Executive of FSDF in early 2009 having previously served on the Executive Council for over ten years. His achievements for FSDF are too numerous to list here but suffice it to say that with his extensive contacts and influence in several government departments, other relevant legislative bodies and trade associations he has become a “Champion” for our industry and the many FSDF members in this room tonight will surely agree that the quality of representation and detailed information for members provided under his leadership is invaluable.” The award was presented to Chris by Matthew Morris of SPAL Automotive UK Ltd. THE FINAL AWARD OF THE EVENING WAS THE: CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS AWARD sponsored by THE CARTWRIGHT GROUP WINNER: THERMO KING and the judges said: “The criteria for the judges for this award was to choose an overall winner from the seventeen awards presented earlier this evening." “This particular company stands out not only as a brand leader in the mobile refrigeration sector, but it’s name is synonymous with mobile temperature controlled refrigeration equipment and services excellence worldwide. Their achievement in producing a drop in gas, in collaboration with suppliers, to address the new F – Gas Regulations, has lifted a major burden from fleet operators, and has provided a market trend target for others to aspire to. Their continued research and development into equipment for more energy effective, sustainable and urban focused operations leads the field.” The award was presented to Steve Williams of Thermo King by Richard Anderson of The Cartwright Group.

Meet ArcticBlast: Need to freeze or rapid chill tons of goods or produce? ArcticStores have regularly been used to chill or to freeze smaller volumes, but they are now pleased to launch the ArcticBlast range of rapid chillers and blast freezers for faster results or greater volume. Removing heat to realise rapid chilling or freezing is only a question of how much effect is applied to how many kilos and the thermal properties of what is to change temperature. Based upon the success of using single machine ArcticStores for smaller volumes they can now offer ArcticBlast 2.1 and 5.1 models with twice and 5 times the effect a normal ArcticStore. ArcticBlast 5.1 delivers approx. 76.000 Kcal/ hr. or more than 300.000 btu/hr. effect. When chilling the airflow is 20.0000m3 per hour. This is sufficient to take 1oC from 20 tons of fruit or vegetables every 20 minutes or so or take 1 ton of
meat from +5oC to -18oC in between 1-2 hours depending upon the fat content. The prototypes showing here are 2,1 and 5.1 models with long and narrow chambers and include flat non-slip flooring, internal lighting, hygienic stainless steel and aluminium interiors, man trap alarm and internal/external opening doors in both ends. 3 or more pallet wide models are also available. ArcticBlast zones can be easily incorporated into SuperStore complexes for Blast 'n Store in one. They also offer accoustic cabins to reduce db emissions and heat extractors. In the right location this free warm air can be collected for heating purposes.
Star warns of cold comfort for food firms Frozen and chilled food manufacturers across the UK face a sharp rise in the cost of some refrigerant gases from 2015, according to cooling expert Star Refrigeration. Star is warning that refrigerant suppliers have indicated that the price of some widely used HFC gases may increase by up to 20% this year. Star believes that new European Union (EU) regulations will dramatically affect the cost and availability of synthetic refrigerants with high global warming potential. As Europe begins its scheduled phase down of selected HFC gases, Star is urging food manufacturers to take a long term, strategic view of their refrigeration systems - or face significant financial penalties.
Star Refrigeration Group Sales and Marketing Director Rob Lamb says: “As the phase down of HFC gases with high global warming potential takes place over the next 15 years, we predict that there will be a rapid increase in cost and a marked decline in their availability.” Rob Lamb says: “Refrigerant manufacturers have been allocated quotas for the HFC gases they can produce and supply within Europe. These quotas are measured in terms of carbon equivalent, with the target to cut the current level down to 63% by 2018, 45% by 2021 and 21% by 2030.”
32
He adds: “We would urge refrigeration plant operators to think strategically and take a long term view of their manufacturing processes by investing in future-proof refrigeration systems.” Over the past fifteen years, the refrigeration industry has seen the gradual phase out of synthetic, ozone-depleting refrigerants. From January 2015 the last of these HCFC gases, including R22, were banned in Europe. HFC refrigerants have been widely used as replacement gases for CFCs and HCFCs, but are now the focus of the EU’s F-Gas Regulations. Gases such as R404A and R507 have been found to have a high global warming effect and are currently the subject of a 15-year phase out programme. In addition to production phase downs, product and service bans will come into effect over the next seven years. These include a ban from 2020 on the use of virgin R404A and R507 gases for stationery refrigeration systems with a charge greater than 10kg. Star Refrigeration’s Rob Lamb says: “Food processors with refrigeration systems that operate on HFCs need to be aware that these gases are at risk in the near future.”
warming potential, Star believes there is a longestablished, natural alternative. Rob Lamb says: “Natural gases such as ammonia have been successfully used as refrigerants for over 100 years. Ammonia has no global warming effect and offers high efficiency, long term availability and low cost per Kg. The use of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant is also growing in popularity due to its relatively low global warming potential.” He adds: “The initial capital cost of plant that operates on a natural refrigerant may be higher, but the lifecycle cost of running the system is key. Those who continue to operate cooling systems with HFCs are facing the risk of escalating running costs in the short to medium term. We believe that natural refrigerants such as ammonia and CO2 offer long term security.” When it comes to designing and maintaining energy efficient cooling and heating systems, Star is a natural innovator. Star works with strategic partners across the globe to deliver low carbon, cost saving solutions. www.star-ref.co.uk, sales@star-ref.co.uk Star Refrigeration on 0141 638 7916.
He adds: “We believe that the message from Europe is clear: HFC refrigerants are not a viable long term solution. Forward-thinking refrigeration plant operators should look to invest in future-proof cooling systems.” Whilst refrigerant suppliers are busy developing new blended synthetic gases with lower global
