Introduction Greetings! The fall quarter is upon us and it’s time to make plans! The vocal program has many options, as you’ll see below. There are also lots of other classes at the school, so consider combining classes this quarter, for instance, take a singing class and a piano or theory course. Take the vocal jazz ensemble and one of the solo performance classes. Mix it up and find ways to grow musically and also have fun. We have some wonderful new teachers. Angie Doctor is teaching the vocal jazz ensemble and has lots of great music to share. Berklee graduate Amanda Addleman is teaching “The 21st Century Singer” — a course for intermediate singers. Zoe Ellis is running the R&B class and has over 20 years of performance experience. Finally, guitar great Mimi Fox is back with her “Art of the Duo” — an amazing opportunity to sing with a world-class accompanist. Workshops include a 3-part exploration with Linda Tillery, an afternoon with Sara Gazarek, Maye Cavallaro presenting Wesla Whitfield — (a rare treat!), Frank Martin and Melanie O’Reilly combining forces, Kenneth Helman returning with his songwriting workshops and Ellen Johnson and master saxophonist Don Braden discussing the deep relationship between Billie Holiday and Lester Young. More details are in the pages ahead. Our Vocal Open House will take place on September 7th. Meet the vocal faculty, listen to them talk about their courses and ask questions. Our instructors will also each sing a song or two! It’s free and refreshments will be served. After the teachers sing, the band will stay on for a jam session open to everyone. Finally, check out our Vocal Mentor Program to create and present your own solo concert at the school! As always, contact me at laurie @ cjc.edu for consultations and information. I’m here to answer questions and help you put together your study plan. Warm regards,

FACULTY PROFILE Vocalist and song stylist Maye Cavallaro has been singing classic songs since she discovered her Mother’s “Sing Along with Mitch” records at age 6. She loves to sing, teach, travel and garden. Below, she shares some of her insights.
What is the most important thing you tell your students on the first day of class? Follow what interests you and what you enjoy. Listen carefully. Don’t be afraid to try something new. There is no “right way.”
Which artists do you think are some of the best “storytellers” in jazz history? The list of “jazz greats” is getting longer as the years go on. I’ve been influenced by so many singers and instrumentalists but particularly by Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Carmen McRae. Each one is an expert at expressing herself honestly in a unique, musical and heartfelt way.
What do you hope students will gain from their experience at the Jazzschool? Music has been the greatest influence in my life. I’ve met the most wonderful people and been enriched in so many ways. I hope that our students enjoy being players of music, and that, whether they become professionals or remain dedicated amateurs, they always have music as a deep part of their lives.
What is your favorite part of mentoring students? I enjoy helping students develop an awareness of their own unique skills and assisting them in learning how to tell their own story. I relish the “ah-ha” moment when a student learns something new. I love being part of the community that is created among our students and seeing how they support and learn from one another. I enjoy sharing the beautiful and timeless songs from the American Songbook.
What are some upcoming projects you are working on? On November 16th, I’ll be appearing for the Vallejo Jazz Society end of the season concert. I’m continuing to develop my Composer Workshop series based on the American Songbook, where in a workshop format, we study and sing songs by various composers. I’ll also be presenting my 24th and 25th student concerts in the Concert mentoring program.

Introduction Dear JYMP students and parents, I’m really looking forward to the beginning of the new school year! It’s an opportunity for me to hear all of the young musicians who are either returning to the program or participating in the Young Musicians Program for the first time, and I really enjoy hearing where everyone is in their musical development. My goals are to find a place for all of the musicians who audition and put together the best possible combination of musicians; musicians who will challenge and inspire each other and respond to the leadership of their ensemble coaches. This fall, we’ll have our excellent faculty returning, including Dave Eshelman leading the Studio Band, Michael Zilber and myself coaching the Advanced High School Jazz Workshops, as well as Rob Ewing, Kasey Knudsen, Colin Hogan and Joe Bagale and myself coaching middle and high school ensembles, with Kyra Gordon and Kenneth Helman leading vocal performance classes. I’m thrilled to create as many exciting and musically-enriching situations as possible for the young musicians in the program, and looking forward to a great and musical school year.

FACULTY PROFILE
Colin Hogan
Colin Hogan is a San Francisco native and began studying drums in the first grade, then, after a short stint with guitar, settled on piano. A former Jazzschool student, Colin is currently a very active performer and teacher around the Bay Area and internationally. He shares his thoughts about how to develop as a musician. How long have you been teaching at the Jazzschool? II’ve only been teaching at the Jazzschool for one year but I’ve already seen my students grow, both as individuals and as ensembles, and am really looking forward to helping to continue that growth this coming year. This is especially rewarding because I studied at the Jazzschool myself when I was in high school. How did you first get started in music? I am lucky to have been born into a very musical family! Both my parents and both my brothers are all musicians as well so I pretty much started in the womb and never looked back! What are the benefits to playing in an ensemble? Learning to play music in an ensemble is an invaluable life lesson. Through it we learn communication, cooperation, problem solving skills, diplomacy and how to react in the moment. When all of these abilities are mastered to make beautiful music, the feeling is truly transcendent.
How can a student make the most of his/her time at the Jazzschool? Jazzschool is an incredible resource with many high-caliber instructors from a variety of backgrounds. I would encourage students to stretch out of their comfort zone and take full advantage of the very supportive community.
What projects are you looking forward to this fall? I’m actually excited about a couple of performances I have coming up at the Jazzschool venue. On Aug. 22nd I’ll be backing up current California Jazz Conservatory student Jenelle Roccaforte along with my two brothers, Steve and Julian, during a “Rising Star” performance. Then on Oct. 18th, I’m performing with one of my favorite projects, the local “avante-groove” group Klaxon Mutant All-Stars.

jon arkin ADVANCED RHYTHMIC PHRASING with Jon Arkin One of the challenges many musicians encounter in improvisation is in learning how to free up their rhythmic phrasing. This two-part workshop provides concepts and exercises to help you move beyond the usual tendencies in 4/4 and 3/4 time, through the study of polyrhythm and polymeter. In the first session, written examples are provided for various rhythmic patterns (with an emphasis on learning how to count them), and an overview of how to superimpose these patterns over the most common meters and forms. The second session focuses on the application of these rhythms to music through playing & listening, as well as introducing a variety of advanced exercises, concepts & practice routines. This type of ear training is essential in developing recognition and comfort within the advanced rhythmic environment of modern music — and ultimately, enables new levels of expression and interaction in any musical context. Examples are shown on drum set, but all musicians who want to develop their rhythmic sense are welcome. Saturdays, October 4 and 11, 3:15 – 5:15pm $60 advance • $75 day of workshop Jon Arkin has performed and recorded with a wide range of musicians since receiving his degree from the University of Miami. ARTIFICIAL SCALES IN JAZZ: EXPLORING THE DIMINISHED AND WHOLE-TONE SCALES with Mark Levine Many jazz musicians draw a blank when confronted with diminished or whole-tone chords. Sure, you may know how to spell them, but it doesn’t sound like jazz! This workshop addresses all aspects of the two chords including chord theory, scale theory, the various functions of the two chords in jazz, four-note voicings, and voice leading. Mark Levine also explores how jazz greats such as Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Barry Harris effortlessly used these much misunderstood chords. with Clark Suprynowicz This workshop series explains how to improvise with a lead-sheet using realworld examples from solos by John Coltrane and others. It departs from the often-used approach of “see this chord, play this scale” and gets into the actual vocabulary of jazz in a way that is easily understood and accessible. Visiting musicians demonstrate some of the approaches under discussion, and students listen to audio recordings. No need to bring instruments to this seminar.

• How to practice so all this gets more intuitive and more fun. 3 Sundays, 2 – 4pm October 12, 19 and 26 $90 advance • $105 day of workshop Clark Suprynowicz is a Bay Area composer and music teacher who has been faculty at the Crowden School, SF School of the Arts and the SF Conservatory (composition and musicianship). NEW MODALITIES IN JAZZ COMPOSITION with Jason Levis This two-part lecture series focuses on strategies to expand your approach to jazz composition and improvisation by utilizing techniques from 21st Century classical composition, including orchestration techniques of the French spectralists, heterophonic practices of the post-war avant-garde, layering principles in new complexity, and extended techniques in musique concrète instrumentale. PART ONE explores approaches to modal jazz using techniques from French spectralism. Employing simple tools such as instrumentation, register, and dynamics, we explore ways of varying timbre and harmonic color while retaining harmonic function. We also look at how this can be reflected in structures used for improvisation. PART TWO discusses the use of counterpoint in modern jazz. We begin with a brief introduction to the basic principles of counterpoint and review examples from jazz repertoire by composers like Dave Holland and Henry Threadgill. Utilizing tools such as rhythmic independence, heterophony, and linear melodic layering, we explore ways to extend ensemble interplay in both written and improvised contexts. Saturdays, October 18 and 25, 3:15 – 5:15pm $60 advance • $75 day of workshop Jason Levis holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Composition from UC Berkeley and a B.A. in Music, Naropa University. FACULTY PROFILE
Mimi Fox
Mimi Fox is a 6-time DownBeat magazine International Critics Poll winner who has performed/ recorded with Diana Krall, Branford Marsalis, Joey DeFrancesco, Abbey Lincoln, Kurt Elling, David Sanchez and Stevie Wonder among countless others. She discussed her experiences and advice for musicians.
How long have you been teaching? I have been teaching almost as long as I have been playing. I started playing guitar when I was 9 years old and by the time I was 11, I was teaching all the teenagers in my neighborhood how to play Beatles songs!
What advice do you have for someone who wants to play the guitar but isn’t sure where to start?
How and when did you start with the Jazzschool?
What is the most important thing that a guitarist and vocalist need to keep in mind when working together?
I was invited to be one of the first faculty members in 1997 and have been with the school ever since.
What makes the guitar program at the Jazzschool special? When we started the program, Susan asked us to design courses that we, ourselves, would have loved to have taken as students. We have a wellrounded guitar program because we cover all the important modern guitar styles: jazz, blues, flamenco, Brazilian. The faculty are all world-class artists I’m proud to have as colleagues.
Find a guitar that’s comfortable to play and that you enjoy playing so that you will enjoy practicing. Also, make sure you can commit to putting in the time to practice.
The best guitar/vocal duos develop a musical telepathy. They have to be able to communicate very clearly with each other to function as one instrument or one voice. It’s very important for a guitarist to know the lyrics and understand the meaning and intent of the songs, and for the vocalist to have a secure sense of time.
What upcoming projects are you looking forward to this year? In October, I’ll be guest artist at a jazz guitar symposium in Provence, France. Next year, I’ll be touring India and China. I will also be touring with Steve Vai and Stanley Jordan. I also have a new project coming out with the great Seattle based vocalist, Greta Matassa.

This workshop delves deeply into one of the most widely-played of all the jazz standards: a classic by Harry Warren. We examine the song’s harmony in ways that will directly help us improvise over it, discussing the chord progression on both a micro level (how each chord leads to the next) and a big-picture level (how they all work together to form a coherent song). Suggestions are given for ways to mentally simplify the song’s structure, as well as a variety of neat harmonic tricks to embellish the chord changes. Students have the option to improvise over the song and get critiqued, with recommendations given for a direct path to improvement. Prerequisites: facility on a melodic instrument or vocals. Knowledge of basic harmony, including major, minor and mixolydian scales. Suggested: some familiarity with There Will Never Be Another You, and with altered and half-diminished chords. Bring your instrument (optional). Saturday, November 15, 3:15 – 5:15pm $30 advance • $45 day of workshop With home bases in both Seattle and Oakland, saxophonist Anton Schwartz has won critical acclaim for each of four albums released since 1998. Additional topics include: different types of “outness”; and lydian dominant, the “sister” of the altered sound. This workshop is appropriate for students with little prior exposure to the subject, as well as students familiar with melodic minor and diminished harmony who wish to deepen their understanding. VOCALS & INSTRUMENTAL
MUSICAL LIAISONS: BILLIE HOLIDAY AND LESTER YOUNG
CELTIC JAZZ (FOR INSTRUMENTALISTS & VOCALISTS)
with Ellen Johnson & Don Braden Billie Holiday “Lady Day” and Lester Young “Prez” had one of the most special musical relationships in the history of jazz. From the late 1930s, the two made music together that transcended into a perfect dance, often anticipating the other’s movements before they happened. This workshop explores the rich repertoire that became famous as a result of their enigmatic relationship. This is an opportunity to sing and play through the songs and analyze what contributes to the success of a musical partnership. Students are provided with several lead sheets of the classic songs that Lady Day and Prez performed together. Open to both vocalists and instrumentalists.
with Melanie O’Reilly & Frank Martin Celtic jazz is part of an “ethno-jazz” movement currently developing in Europe and worldwide. In this unique workshop, instructors Melanie O’Reilly & Frank Martin illustrate the dialogue between the two great traditions of jazz and Irish traditional music, through songs and instrumentals. Tracing the basic elements of the roots of the rich and diverse Irish music tradition, they explore how uplifting Irish instrumental rhythms can be integrated into swing, jazz waltz and Latin rhythms, while also demonstrating how Irish “lilting” (Irish “mouth music”) can be developed and inspire vocal scat. Modal harmonic ideas are demonstrated, illustrating how modes such as Aolian, Dorian, Mixolydian, used in Irish music, can be woven into jazz themes. Finally, the bridging of the melodic tradition of Ireland with contemporary harmony and arrangements illustrating how this “fusion” brings a fresh, new and exciting collaboration — a true Atlantic bridge! Sunday, October 19, 2 – 4pm $40 advance • $55 day of workshop Frank Martin has served as music director for Narada Michael Walden and Patti Austin, appeared at Carnegie Hall with Sting, James Taylor and Elton John, and produced records for Al Jarreau, Turtle Island String Quartet, and Joey DeFrancesco. PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES Admission is based on a confidential, friendly 20-minute placement audition to determine where students are best suited to play or sing. New students wishing to enroll in a performance ensemble in winter, spring and/or summer quarters must schedule a placement audition or telephone consultation and will be accepted on a parts-available basis.
JCMS FACULTY AND COURSE SCHEDULES Given prestigious national and international performance and/or lecture opportunities that arise, Jazzschool faculty, course offerings and/or class schedules may be subject to change.
