Overview The California Jazz Conservatory is an innovative nonprofit organization dedicated to the study and performance of jazz — America’s indigenous art form — and related styles of music from around the world. Founded in 1997, the institution has recently been granted accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), making it the only accredited, stand-alone conservatory devoted to jazz studies in the United States. The school is located in the heart of the vibrant Downtown Berkeley Arts District, home to Berkeley Rep, the Freight & Salvage and many other arts organizations. Hailed as one of the nation’s most comprehensive schools of jazz and related styles of music, the CJC offers instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages and skill levels a broad spectrum of performance ensembles, lectures, workshops and private instruction. Courses are designed for the professional musician, the serious student and the jazz aficionado seeking personal enrichment. A multifaceted institution, the CJC comprises several key components:

JCMS YOUNG MUSICIANS PROGRAM

The California Jazz Conservatory (formerly the Jazzschool Institute) is a music school offering the aspiring professional a comprehensive 4-year degree program culminating in the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies. The CJC provides a challenging curriculum of performance, jazz theory and improvisation, ear training, composition, arranging, transcription and analysis, and music history courses, taught by professional artists and educators. Coursework also includes music business, music technology and financial planning, thoroughly preparing students for a fulfilling career in the performing arts.

The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program offers middle and high school students of all skill levels a wide variety of combos, big bands and vocal performance courses throughout the entire year, as well as camps during the summer. Select ensembles participate in national competitions, and Jazzschool bands have routinely taken top awards from DownBeat, the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival and others.

JAZZSCHOOL COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL (JCMS) The JCMS provides music education and performance opportunities for people of all ages and levels of ability. Consisting of the JCMS Adult Music Program and the JCMS Young Musicians Program, the JCMS operates year-round on a quarterly basis and offers over 100 ensembles, courses and workshops to build all aspects of musicianship. Students are routinely featured in concert performances, open to the public. With a formidable faculty of renowned musicians and educators, the JCMS is a cornerstone of the Bay Area’s thriving music scene.

JCMS ADULT MUSIC PROGRAM The Jazzschool Adult Music Program offers life-enriching opportunities to learn about and play jazz and related styles of music from throughout the world. Courses are available for both instrumentalists and vocalists, and everyone from young adult to senior citizen is welcome. Instruction and performances occur primarily in late afternoons, evenings and on weekends, making the program easily accessible to the working professional.

WORKSHOPS Visiting artists and Jazzschool faculty lead fascinating and practical workshops, typically a single session of two or three hours in length and held on Saturdays and Sundays. Content may focus on any specific aspect of jazz theory or performance, such as playing in odd time signatures or the art of vocal improvisation. Past workshops have been taught by prominent musicians from Bobby McFerrin to Dave Liebman, Janis Siegel, Peter Erskine, Sheila Jordan, Nguyên Lê and others.

CONCERTS The CJC facility includes an intimate venue with seating capacity of 100. Throughout the year, faculty and students perform for the public, providing a realworld incubator for developing new concepts and gaining audience exposure in the competitive Bay Area environment. High-profile artists have performed at the school, including Terence Blanchard, Art Lande, Kim Nalley, Taylor Eigsti, Sachal Vasandani and many more.

JAZZCAFFÈ Located within the CJC facility, the Jazzcaffè serves up delectable fare for students and visitors to enjoy a convenient bite to eat. A changing menu features house-made soups, salads and sandwiches, as well as beer, wine, espresso and desserts. Drop by for a great meal to match the great music!

TRANSPORTATION CJC BOOKSTORE The CJC’s in-house retail store is a treasure trove of jazz-related reading and listening materials. It provides students, teachers and the public with convenient access to extraordinary books, recordings, videos and accessories.

The CJC is easily accessible by car and public transportation. The downtown Berkeley BART station and AC Transit bus stops are within a block. There is a public parking garage just a few steps away on Addison, in addition to metered street parking throughout the neighborhood.

• Large and small ensembles in our Young Musicians Program are routinely recognized by DownBeat magazine and the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. National competitions provide gifted students with the opportunity to become jazz masters of the future.

Jazzschool Community Music School The Jazzschool Community Music School (JCMS) is dedicated to the study and performance of jazz and related styles of music from around the world. There are dozens of exciting and fun options for both instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages and skill levels. The JCMS operates year-round on a quarterly basis, normally 10 weeks during the fall and winter, 9 weeks in the spring and 7 weeks in the summer. Performance Ensembles JCMS performance ensembles delve into a wide range of styles including jazz (stan­dards, hard-bop, post-bop, fusion), Latin jazz, Brazilian, blues, R&B, funk and even Balkan (eastern European). Ensembles are available for instrumentalists and vocalists at the beginning, intermediate and ad­vanced levels. Groups range in size from the trio to the big band. A placement audition is required.

Instrumental Courses JCMS instrumental courses provide study of a specific instrument in a group setting. Courses are available for saxophone, harmonica, piano/keyboard, guitar, bass and drums/percussion. Instruction is available for beginners (covering basic technique and instrumental skills) and also for more advanced players (focused on jazz style, harmony, improvisation and more). Theory, Improvisation and Composition Instrumentalists and vocalists are encouraged to take courses in theory, improvisation, ear training, composition and arranging, music production, music business and others. Vocal Courses JCMS vocal courses provide an opportunity for singers at all levels to improve style and technique in a group setting. Per­­formance courses are offered in jazz, Latin, blues, R&B and pop genres. Complete beginners, singers returning to music, and more advanced vocalists can all find courses appropriate for their interests.

Jazzschool Young Musicians Program The JYMP offers a range of courses for middle and high school students. JYMP ensembles are available for beginning, intermediate and advanced instrumentalists. The program includes small groups focused on improvisation and big bands that delve into style and repertoire. Vocal performances courses are also available. JYMP ensembles have repeatedly taken DownBeat student music awards and been honored at prestigious jazz festivals in the US and abroad. A placement audition is required. Workshops For instrumentalists and vocalists who prefer a short-term commitment, JCMS workshops provide intensive instruction in a single two- or three-hour session. Led by visiting artists and JCMS faculty, workshops typically focus on a specific aspect of jazz, such as music transcription techniques or the art of vocal accompaniment. Prominent musicians including Richie Beirach, Gretchen Parlato, Taylor Eigsti, Mike Clark and others have taught past workshops.

Faculty A distinguished faculty of professional musicians and educators leads JCMS courses and workshops. Our educators have played with some of the music world’s biggest names, including Sting, Pat Metheny, Joe Henderson, Ray Charles, Dave Liebman, Carlos Santana, McCoy Tyner, Pete Escovedo, Diana Krall, Eddie Palmieri, Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis, Joey DeFrancesco, Bobby Hutcherson, John Mayer, Stevie Wonder and countless others. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Jazzschool Winter 2015 quarter! Along with the myriad of interesting Jazzschool courses and workshops scheduled this term, the California Jazz Conservatory (CJC) offers a 4-year Bachelor of Music degree program in Jazz Studies for those of you who are aspiring professionals seeking to complete a music degree, or just wishing to expand your musical horizons on a part-time basis.

We’ve gone to great lengths to program a broad range of courses this winter for instrumentalists and vocalists at all levels, for both youth and adults, under the direction of our accomplished and dedicated faculty members. Courses are available for total beginners, so if you’ve always wanted to play but have been waiting for the right opportunity, now’s the time and this is the place! If you already have the basics down, we offer more advanced courses on most instruments

Adult Performance Ensembles The Jazzschool Community Music School (JCMS) offers numerous performance ensembles for beginning, intermediate and advanced instrumentalists and vocalists. Students are placed in ensembles by audition and requirements may include the following: playing selected scales; playing and/or improvising over a piece of your choice; improvising over a 12-bar blues or other pieces provided at the audition; and sight-reading. JAZZ BEGINNING JAZZ ENSEMBLE An introductory ensemble focused on learning jazz standards, developing improvisation skills and putting jazz theory into practice. Students develop familiarity with various jazz feels and learn to improvise over common chord progressions. This is the place to get started! JAZZ STANDARDS FOR GIGS This ensemble helps musicians develop the skills and repertoire needed for typical jazz gigs. Repertoire, intros, endings, interludes and tags are covered. Various jazz styles including swing, bossa, jazz waltz and ballads are studied and played. Class time is also dedicated to the study of jazz harmony, as applied to selected standard repertoire. Instructor also provides tips for soloing. HARD BOP ENSEMBLE An intermediate to advanced ensemble delving into the hard bop style of the ’50s and ’60s. Students rehearse compositions from iconic artists such as Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan and others. Thursdays 6:30 – 8pm 1/15 – 3/19 (10 weeks) Dave LeFebvre • $395

MUSIC OF THE MASTERS An intermediate ensemble focused on compositions by jazz masters including John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter and others. Emphasis on understanding and internalizing a variety of essential grooves. Class time is also dedicated to the study of jazz harmony, as applied to select repertoire. MILES DAVIS/WAYNE SHORTER ENSEMBLE An intermediate to advanced ensemble focusing on the music of Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter from the mid-1960s through the 1980s. Repertoire is drawn from such albums as Miles Smiles, ESP, Filles de Kilimanjaro, Speak No Evil, Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way, Native Dancer and Jack Johnson. COMPOSERS AND ARRANGERS ENSEMBLE

Adult Performance Ensembles

This hands-on performance-based course is for instrumentalists who are also composers and/or arrangers. We focus on performing the students’ own work, together with support from composition and arrangement activities, assignments and exercises. Students develop important skills as bandleaders: writing well for an ensemble, communicating one’s musical vision clearly to the band, and encouraging each player’s own musical personality to shine. Instructor also introduces new approaches to composition and arranging. Note: please bring a finished composition or arrangement to the first class meeting. PIANO TRIO This hands-on performance course for intermediate to advanced pianists examines how to play most effectively in the traditional jazz piano trio format. Students are challenged by slightly faster tempos and more involved tunes. Unusual keys, uncommon tune structures, and more complex melodies are presented along with standard repertoire. Focused on the basics of jazz and blues guitar technique, this hands-on course covers soloing and comping over standard jazz repertoire and the blues. An intensive workout on jazz material, for all instruments except drums. Students improve their ability to improvise through chord changes. Various licks and patterns are covered, and call-and-response exercises are presented to strengthen listening ability. The course covers scales, modes and arpeggios for each song. Workouts are accompanied by metronome and play-along tracks. Students play extensively for most of each class, memorizing most of the material with only a small emphasis on reading. Each segment ends by rotating improvised choruses with peers for extended periods. Material is based on mainstream bop and post-bop styles. JAZZ THEORY AND IMPROV This course provides a comprehensive overview of jazz theory and its application to improvisation and composition. Topics include chord and scale theory, 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th chords, harmonic progressions (chord changes), basic reharmonization, form and analysis. Class time is used to explain and demonstrate suspensions and slash chords, bebop and pentatonic scales, blues changes and rhythm changes. The course also includes advanced techniques of playing outside the changes. Stylistic analysis of various jazz masters supplements theoretical material and guides students in applying this knowledge to improvisation. Handouts provided. COMPOSITION & ARRANGING SONGWRITING Students explore melody writing, basic harmony, more adventurous chord progressions, song form, rhyme schemes, and cultivate the instrumental component of songwriting — all with the purpose of honing each student’s unique songwriting voice. We’re thrilled with the success of Angie Doctor’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble and are adding a second section for more experienced singers. Andrea Claburn, one of our advanced Conservatory students, is on board to teach vocal technique, and we’re happy that Joyce Pricco will be back teaching her Thursday morning technique course. Amanda Addleman, Ellen Johnson and I are all teaching jazz classes with an emphasis on working with accompanists, putting together arrangements, developing a personal style, improvisation, phrasing and building repertoire. Ellen also has a wonderful beginning jazz singing class that is highly recommended to anyone new to the art form. Our Latin program continues with Edgardo Cambón teaching Salsa Singing and Sandy Cressman teaching Bossa Nova for Jazz Singers.

blues BLUES VOCAL FUNSHOP I Blues is the most primal, powerful part of your soul and singing it is more fun than you can possibly imagine! Whether you are already singing professionally and want to add some grit and soul to your style, or whether you just want to try singing the blues, this class is highly instructive and lots of fun. VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE If you love singing in harmony, join our new Vocal Jazz Ensemble! This course includes arrangements hand-tailored to the ability and interest of those who join the group. Songs are from The Manhattan Transfer, The Hi-Lo’s, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross as well as music from renowned vocal arrangers who write contemporary jazz, classic swing, bebop songs and pop. latin SALSA SINGING This course introduces a basic repertoire of songs to learn the style, rhythm and technique of salsa vocal music. All songs are in Spanish but fluency is not required to participate. Students also learn to play some basic percussion while singing and the instructor provides instruments like guiro, maracas and claves to use each week. Later in the quarter, the class joins up with the Salsa II instrumental ensemble (see page 19), and works toward a combined performance at the school. Songs include “Tres Días de Carnaval” (Celia Cruz), “La Rebelión” (Joe Arroyo) and “Brujería” (El Gran Combo), providing a great foundation. BOSSA NOVA FOR JAZZ SINGERS A fascinating course exploring the roots of Brazilian bossa nova and samba. Instructor Sandy Cressman teaches singers the signature rhythmic grooves of Brazilian music as a foundation for effective interpretation of standard and not-so-standard bossa novas. Vocal phrasing and Portuguese pronunciation are covered (in addition to a few carefully chosen English translations). Live piano or guitar accompaniment is provided each week and the course concludes with a performance.

VOCAL WORKSHOPS EASY TO LOVE: THE MUSIC OF COLE PORTER with Maye Cavallaro “I Get a Kick Out of You,” I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye,” “Get Out of Town,” and “I Concentrate on You,” are just a few of the tunes composed by Cole Porter. We can’t imagine the American Songbook without this great composer and lyricist. In this workshop, Maye Cavallaro presents background and biographical material about Cole Porter and introduces 10 tunes in particular, some well-known and some not so well-known. Students are provided with 10 charts and practice backing tracks and students listen to different versions of Porter’s music by various artists. Students learn and sing songs in class and in the 3rd week try out their our own arrangements with a pianist. Class limited to 8.

He will play examples of successful pairings such as Billie Holiday and Lester Young, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, Houston Person and Etta Jones, and Denise Perrier and Houston Person. Joe Bagale has toured extensively with the Mickey Hart Band, leads his own bands and can be seen performing with the Jazz Mafia and many other live projects. He has released three albums to date, including the recent “Movies,” available for free exclusively through the youtube audio library.

This exciting program is open to vocal students who would like to work with one of our available faculty to create a personalized course of study. This is a unique opportunity for aspiring professional singers to create and present a concert at the school. Students will work with their mentor over the course of three to four months, and concert dates are available throughout the year. Lessons range from selecting and rehearsing a band to finding appropriate repertoire, developing stage presence, designing a performance that reflects a personalized artistic vision and insight into the “business” of putting on a show.

My father is a music teacher. I’m the youngest of 3 boys and we all got started at literally the same time. The only difference was, I was 7 years old. I started on the drums, then added trombone to the mix, followed by guitar, piano and bass. Having two older brothers and a music teacher as my dad influenced me in many different directions. I was also fortunate to have a lot of instruments and a recording equipment around the house thanks to my pops. I started my first band when I was 12 years old and never looked back. I knew that there was no other choice for me because I was obsessed with everything and anything that involved music What are the benefits to playing in an ensemble?

Playing in an ensemble allows the student to apply their studies in a very unique environment. All of sudden you are no longer listening to yourself, but actually having a “conversation” with

other musicians. It’s all about owning your craft in order to let others in the ensemble influence your performance in real time. There really are no words to describe that experience of making music with other human beings. How can a student make the most of his/her time at the Jazzschool? Obviously the Jazzschool is an environment to learn, but its real reward, in my opinion, is the human connections that are made in the class room. The biggest reward I’ve received as a teacher is watching my students collaborate outside of the school and start their own bands. This has happened more than once and I am so happy to have been a part of those connections.

What projects are you looking forward to this fall? I’m always looking forward to each class that I teach. They are all different, but have the same theme. I want my students to leave feeling inspired and to have learned something new about themselves. Becoming a good musician requires patience and self discipline, but it’s very important for me to give my students the confidence when failing, in order to succeed. It’s never easy, but it never should be if you always want to get better. I look forward to always getting better.

Things are boppin’ along so far this year in the Jazzschool’s Young Musicians Program — we have a full program with 10 high school combos, 4 middle school combos, the Advanced High School Workshops I and II, the Studio Big Band and 2 vocal performance classes. Our instructors Kasey Knudsen, Joe Bagale, Rob Ewing, Michael Zilber, Dave Eshelman, Colin Hogan, Charles Hamilton and Kyra Gordon have been working with the current crop of students on all the elements of creating music together: playing with dynamics, grooving, learning new material, improvising, and creating a group sound. Each instructor has years of experience both playing professionally and teaching, and they all bring their own personality to the group they’re working with. I always enjoy hearing how the bands have evolved at the end of the quarter concerts; after only 10 weeks of working together they always sound great! I’m very happy to announce that the Studio Band is in the process of booking a European Tour for this upcoming Summer! Studio Band Director Dave Eshelman has years of experience taking his bands from Cal State East Bay over there and is preparing the band for the trip now. I’m also continuing to look for other opportunities for our students to perform; the Studio Band will be playing at the Hillside Club in Berkeley on February 21st, we’re continuing to have Jazzschool youth groups perform at the Sound Room in Oakland on First Fridays, and our combos also continue to open up for professional groups at many Jazz in the Neighborhood events. I’m always looking for more young musicians. If you’re an interested student or know of any young musicians who are interested in participating, please contact me and I’ll do my best to find a group for you to be a part of.

Jazzschool Young Musicians Program The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program is a year-round compre­ hensive music education and performance program designed for instrumental and vocal students between the ages of 11 and 18. The Young Musicians Program has been at the center of the Jazzschool’s educational and artistic goals since 1997. Its curriculum provides students with the opportunity to work with professional jazz artists and educators, strengthening performance skills, expanding knowledge of jazz theory and improvisation, and learning more about the foundations of jazz and related styles of music. Students participate in afterschool classes, master classes with nationally known jazz artists, and are featured in public performances in venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

PLACEMENT & AUDITION REQUIREMENTS – WINTER 2015 AUDITION MATERIALS Entering musicians are asked to prepare two skill-level appropriate jazz standards, improvise over a 12-bar blues (optional) or rhythm changes (for high school students only) and sight-read.

• Perform two skill-level appropriate jazz standards. Please state the name of each piece before you play it. • Download one of the two improvisation tracks at cjc.edu/youth_auditions for the improvisation portion of your audition. Two choruses required. • On the video, it is important that your playing is heard louder than anything else, including any accompanying tracks.

PIANO AND GUITAR PLAYERS HOW TO SCHEDULE AN AUDITION To schedule an audition, please fill out an application online at cjc.edu/youth_auditions. After your application is received, you will be contacted within 1 – 2 weeks with an audition time. Auditions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and will be scheduled at the earliest available time. Students will be contacted with placement information following the audition.

2015 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS JYMP ensembles require a commitment of three quarters (fall, winter and spring). Students unable to commit to a full school year are still encouraged to audition, however, priority will be given to those who can remain in the program for the entire school year. Students wishing to audition mid-year will be placed in the program based on availability of open spots in ensembles and the student’s ability level. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate all students but it is our mission to find a place for everyone if at all possible.

AUDITION BY VIDEO (OPTIONAL) Students have the option of submitting an online video audition rather than scheduling an in-person audition. Students submitting their audition online are still required to fill out an online application (see above). On the application form, please select live audition or video submission. Please note: online video submissions are not available for the Studio Band or Advanced High School Jazz Workshops.

HIGH SCHOOL LATIN ENSEMBLE: THE MUSIC OF EDDIE PALMIERI

High school and middle school jazz ensembles are offered Monday through Thursday in the late afternoon and early evening. While we make every effort to accommodate scheduling requests, specific placements are based on the results of an audition.

The new Eddie Palmieri Ensemble features performance and analysis of key repertoire of NEA Jazz Master, 10-time Grammy award winner and Latin piano legend Eddie Palmieri. Taught by current Eddie Palmieri Salsa Orchestra member trombonist Doug Beavers, students learn about the Afro Cuban idiom through the lens of Mr. Palmieri’s transcendent repertoire. Percussionists, bassists, pianists and all horn players are welcome! An audition is required.

We’ll play through left hand patterns, analyze Pete’s right hand figures, look at some of his most popular pieces, and learn classic boogie woogie intros and breaks. Students will gather skills on how to transcribe and continue to self teach to reach repertoire goals.

PIANO NEW JAZZ PIANO VOICING STRUCTURES with Eli Wallace Give your piano chord voicings an intriguing and individual sound. Eli Wallace presents an uncommon approach to constructing piano chord voicings, using specific intervals and fingerings. Students learn to play II-V-Is with these structures, using left hand and two-hand voicings. Participants can use these tools to play chords befitting of their own style, whether they want to emulate Herbie Hancock or Olivier Messiaen. Students will play during the workshop and are given handouts to practice these structures on their own. Open to all. COMPOSITION NEW MODALITIES IN JAZZ COMPOSITION with Jason Levis This two-part lecture series focuses on strategies to expand your approach to jazz composition and improvisation by utilizing techniques from 21st Century classical composition, including orchestration techniques of the French spectralists, heterophonic practices of the post-war avant-garde, layering principles in new complexity, and extended techniques in musique concrète instrumentale. PART ONE explores approaches to modal jazz using techniques from French spectralism. Employing simple tools such as instrumentation, register, and dynamics, we explore ways of varying timbre and harmonic color while retaining harmonic function. We also look at how this can be reflected in structures used for improvisation. PART TWO discusses the use of counterpoint in modern jazz. We begin with a brief introduction to the basic principles of counterpoint and review examples from jazz repertoire by composers like Dave Holland and Henry Threadgill. Utilizing tools such as rhythmic independence, heterophony, and linear melodic layering, we explore ways to extend ensemble interplay in both written and improvised contexts. GUITAR BEGINNING BOSSA NOVA GUITAR with Ian Faquini This workshop covers basic guitar chord shapes and progressions common in Brazilian music by examining the songs of great composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Baden Powell, Dorival Caymmi and others. The instructor also demonstrates essential Brazilian rhythms including bossa nova, samba, baiao, frevo, and toada. THE ART OF CHORD MELODY FOR GUITAR with Jeff Massanari Learn to effectively harmonize melodies and create arrangements for solo guitar in this hands-on workshop. Using his own arrangements as a guide, ace guitarist Jeff Massanari covers basic approaches to developing chord melodies using standard voicings and presents a range of techniques for creating richer and more complex arrangements. Topics covered include counterpoint, inner line movement, alternative voicings and reharmonization. The ace guitarist delves into the art of tasteful and effective rock and funk rhythm guitar! These principles apply to multiple genres from jazz fusion to R&B, reggae, ska, hip hop, metal and more. Open to all.

Modes of the melodic and harmonic minor and triad substitutions are clearly explained and demonstrated in the context of developing an extended harmonic vocabulary. Students get hands-on experience locating new sounds and with ear training in the context of specific sounds, chords, progressions and songs. Please bring your guitar and note paper. LATIN PERCUSSION — BONGOS AND COWBELL with Danilo Páiz

ODDACIOUS DRUMMING with Alan Hall

Learn the essential patterns and grooves for playing Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and Cha Cha Cha rhythms on bongos and cowbell. Danilo Páiz demonstrates proper technique, patterns and fills, providing ample feedback for students of all levels. Beginners will learn the basics, while more advanced players receive an assessment of their current technique and suggestions to enhance their playing. Students are encouraged but not required to bring their own bongo.

Odd time signatures (5/4, 7/8, etc.) have been a part of jazz language for some time, and are increasingly encountered in funk, rock and pop. This workshop is geared toward drummers who are relatively new to this challenging and exciting musical universe. We start with simple, small groupings of 2 and 3 note patterns. From there we learn how to build these “cells” into larger groupings that can be utilized in groove and solo settings. Topics discussed include “the pendulum effect” and clave strategies. Some class time is dedicated to listening to recordings of prime examples of oddacious drumming at work.

IMPROVISING WITH PENTATONICS with Anton Schwartz      new

marko djordjevic ADVANCED RHYTHMIC CONCEPTS with Marko Djordjevic, Julian Pollack and Evan Marien New York-based drummer Marko Djordjevic and his trio present an engaging workshop covering odd meters, polyrhythms, uncommon rhythmic structures and their relationship to composition and improvisation. Topics related to group interaction and improvising within the ensemble context will also be explored. Blue Note recording artist Lionel Loueke says: “Marko is one of the greatest drummers out there. He possesses incredible technique, and a musical mind to match it! I love playing with him because he is so creative and unique”! A theoretical and practical look at pentatonic (five-note) scales and their role in jazz, paying particular attention to the many ways we can use them to great effect in our solos. We lay out the theory behind them from the ground up, show how they may be used in myriad harmonic contexts, and discuss exactly how it is that such a simple harmonic tool (they are the basis of some of the simplest folk melodies around the world) can be used so powerfully in modern music to create so many colors and degrees of tension and dissonance. Prerequisites: A basic understanding of chords and sevennote scales is required; familiarity with advanced harmony (altered, lydian, etc.) is recommended. IMPROVISING WITH TRIAD PAIRS with Anton Schwartz      new A particular sound can be achieved by constructing musical phrases using a six-note scale and grouping the six notes into two triads. It’s a sound most closely associated with John Coltrane, and first discussed extensively by Walt Weiskopf. In this workshop we discuss this technique of triad pairs and how it departs from the pre-1960 jazz vocabulary. We explore its harmonic foundations and its various uses, and learn tips for integrating it into our improvisations. Prerequisites: An understanding of chords and sevennote scales is required; familiarity with advanced harmony (altered, lydian, etc.) is recommended. (*and other horns) with Noel Jewkes What is the special dialogue that makes magic on the bandstand between the horn player and the vocalist? In this hands-on workshop, master reed player Noel Jewkes guides students in an exploration of the collaborative process between singers and horn players. He will play examples of successful pairings such as Billie Holiday and Lester Young, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, Houston Person and Etta Jones, and Denise Perrier and Houston Person. Students learn the art of the fill, the use of silence, adaptation to unusual keys, complimenting the singer, development of solo sequences, intros and outros, trading fours and scatting. THE SPIRIT OF IMPROVISATION

erik jekabson MUSIC TRANSCRIPTION TECHNIQUES with Bob Karty Transcribing music from recordings is an essential practice with many benefits for aspiring musicians. In this workshop, students are introduced both to traditional transcription techniques as well as the various notation and playback computer programs now available. Instructor demonstrates techniques using Sibelius notation software and Transcribe!, an inexpensive software program which allows you to loop and adjust the speed and EQ of selected recordings for transcription purposes. with Matt Heulitt         new Improvisation is not reserved only for jazz musicians — we are all improvisers in life. Because the practice is so entrenched, we don’t typically notice how effortlessly we do it on a daily basis. Music lessons tend to focus on the nuts and bolts of how to play your instrument but the process of spontaneous creativity is often left out. In this workshop we will have a conversation about the spirit of improvising, the way we’ve learned to block and judge it, and ultimately get a feeling for how fun, inspired, and expressive it can be. We will explore some ways to get your “creative brain” flowing around obstacles with some simple techniques that will have you craving your next solo rather than dreading it. His critically acclaimed John Fedchock New York Big Band has become a marquee group, showcasing Fedchock’s trombone and arranging as well as the band’s all-star soloists. Instructions and Application To enroll in the JCMS Winter Quarter, please read these important instructions! For courses that don’t require an audition or consultation, sign up online at cjc.edu or complete the application on page 79 and submit it along with full tuition. Students may register online, by phone (510.845.5373), mail, fax (510.841.5373) or in person. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be guaranteed without full payment. Students applying for courses that are full may be placed on a waiting list. The JCMS accepts checks (made payable to California Jazz Conservatoryl), cash, VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Payment plans are available. To register in courses requiring a consultation or audition please call the JCMS at 510.845.5373 for assistance with placement.

PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES Admission is based on a confidential, friendly 20-minute placement audition to determine where students are best suited to play or sing. Placement auditions address students’ overall musicality, technical ability, stylistic preference(s) and availability. Please fill out the online ensemble application form at cjc.edu/ensemble or call the Jazzschool to schedule an appointment (510.845.5373).

Please note: With the exception of the fall quarter, students previously enrolled in a performance ensemble have the option of re-enrolling in that same course again on a consecutive quarterly basis within the academic year without having to re-audition. New students wishing to enroll in a performance ensemble in winter, spring and/or summer quarters must schedule a placement audition or telephone consultation and will be accepted on a parts-available basis.

The Jazzschool makes every effort to provide its students with the optimal educational experience possible under these or any other circumstances at all times.

REFUND POLICY Course and ensemble tuition includes a $50 non-refundable deposit. Requests to drop must be received in writing within 48 hours of the first class meeting to qualify for a refund; please visit the main office or e-mail drop@cjc.edu to request a refund. Refunds for remaining tuition are not possible after the 48-hour drop deadline. $100 per week of camp and intensive tuition is non-refundable; the remainder is refundable only until 30 days prior to the start of the program.
