Having outgrown its Addison Street home, the CJC is expanding directly across the street, adding 5,550 square feet of classroom, practice room, performance, café, and office space to its Berkeley Arts District campus. Our new, 100-seat performance space, Rendon Hall (named in honor of the project’s lead sponsor, longtime CJC student Kathi Rendon) will be modeled after Minton’s Playhouse, the renowned Harlem nightclub that fostered the development of jazz (and where Thelonious Monk was the first house pianist).
‘Round Midnight Campaign for Expansion
Your investment in the future of jazz and in our $1.2 million campaign for the new facility will be honored with your name on a note in a sculptural representation of Monk’s revered composition, ‘Round Midnight, which provides the inspiration for our campaign. This permanent installation, to be created by Eclipse Design, will greet students and audiences on the east wall of Rendon Hall.

FACULTY PROFILE
Alan Hall
Drummer Alan Hall has performed with a wide range of musicians including Taylor Eigsti, Russell Ferrante, Billy Childs, Kenny Werner, Art Lande, Christian Jacob, Kit Walker, Tom Coster, Eddie Harris, Bob Sheppard, Paul McCandless, John Handy, Jimmy Haslip and countless others. He is also a highly regarded educator and is the author of Internalization, an innovative jazz drumming method book.
How long have you been teaching at the Jazzschool? 18 years! I started at the original location on Shattuck Avenue! How did you first get started in music? Around 5 years old I was “playing” drums on boxes while my late sister Lesly “played” guitar on our mom’s tennis racket. We’d turn on the radio and entertain the neighborhood kids. Later on, at 13, I joined my first working band called “Los Unicos.” We played Mexican Rancheras, Cumbias and top 40 in the San Jose area. How can a student make the most of his/her time at the Jazzschool? Try different teachers and ensembles. There are so many options here, it’s like a candy store, so I say partake! In the process, you’ll find your peeps and possibly form working groups. I’ve seen that happen time and time again.

What do you hope students will gain from their experience at the Jazzschool? I hope all will gain a lifelong love and respect for jazz music. For some, the very serious students, I hope they will develop the skills to get going on a professional performing career. What is your favorite part of teaching students? Seeing the joy and pride in their faces when they finally master a difficult concept or technical challenge. Those moments energize me! What’s your teaching philosophy? My job is to assess the skill level, problem areas, commitment level and goals native to each student. Then I find the best assortment of approaches to get them where they want to go. The key is to be open to adjusting my pedagogy if things aren’t working.

INTERMEDIATE JAZZ IMPROVISATION
Theory, Improv & Composition
new
Aspiring jazz musicians often still have trouble playing correct notes in their solos. The purpose of this course is to give students, through specific drill exercises, the ability to play the right notes with good rhythmic phrasing in their solos. Several compositions from the Great American Songbook are used as vehicles to study basic chord structures, scale structures and non-diatonic neighboring tones. Emphasis is placed on utilization of basic harmonic concepts, thereby turning exercises into melody. A step-bystep conceptual approach is used. With each new tune a different concept is added. Emphasis is also placed on the development of rhythmic 2, 4 and 8 bar phrasing. The ultimate goal of this class is to provide students with a strong foundation in the Great American Songbook repertoire and the ability to improvise over chord progressions with correct notes and good phrasing. Mondays 6:30 – 8 pm 4/4 – 6/6 (9 weeks) (no class 5/30) Glenn Richman • $360

Introduction Dear JYMP students and parents, The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program continues in the spring quarter with an abundance of talented, motivated and hard-working students and some of the finest faculty one can find in the world. Joe Bagale, Rob Ewing, Colin Hogan, Kasey Knudsen, Erika Oba, Michael Zilber, Charles Hamilton, Dave Eshelman and Kyra Gordon continue to inspire and instruct these young musicians, who are practicing, performing, composing and arranging music. I’m really happy to have two extra musical outlets for the young musicians: the Sound Room in Oakland, which has youth groups playing every first Friday of the month, and Doc’s Lab in San Francisco, which has youth groups opening up for the ESO big band on select Sundays. That means that in addition to performing at the California Jazz Conservatory, the students will have more opportunities to perform in professional settings, gaining valuable experience and confidence. Also stay tuned for information about a very special guest performer who will be joining the Studio Band at the Freight and Salvage in June!

The “magic” comes when you discover that your favorite ideas can be played in a large variety of harmonic settings with equally good results! Bring your instrument to try it out! Sunday, April 10, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm $30 advance, $45 day of the workshop Dan Haerle is a composer, performer, educator and ambassador of jazz piano. He is a regents professor emeritus of Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas, where he taught for 35 years. Haerle is an active jazz clinician nationally and internationally and has written several instructional methods used by thousands of musicians worldwide. Haerle was elected a member of the International Association of Jazz Education (IAJE) Hall of Fame in 2003. Haerle has performed with Clark Terry, Pat Metheny, David Liebman, Freddie Hubbard and numerous other modern jazz leaders.

with Larry Vuckovich Master pianist Larry Vuckovich demonstrates a range of approaches to playing ballads. He will demonstrate a variety of tempos and styles including playing in 3/4, Latin bolero and bossa rhythms, walking ballad style and rubato style, expressing variations of energy and feeling that can be both romantic and exciting. Other important topics discussed in this workshop include lyricism and melodic beauty in jazz. This is especially important in today’s jazz improvisation, since the newer generation often relies on theoretical and clinical elements, where more of the learned aspects come through, instead of deeper, soulful expression. Larry will demonstrate some of these points on the piano and invite players to participate, hands-on. Recorded examples by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Trane, Lester Young, Stan Getz, Tommy Flanagan and others will be presented as well. This workshop should be of interest to musicians and music lovers alike. Sunday, April 24, Noon – 3 pm $30 advance, $45 day of the workshop Larry Vuckovich gained first-hand knowledge from performances or recordings with many of the jazz greats including Dexter Gordon, Charles McPherson, Charlie Haden, Tom Harrell, Bobby Hutcherson, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, Bobby McFerrin, Billy Higgins, Philly Joe Jones and Elvin Jones. Larry has been associated with several piano icons, such as Bud Powell, Red Garland, Bill Evans, Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and as the only student of Vince Guaraldi.

SUS CHORDS — The How, When and Why of Using Them with Anton Schwartz A deep look at suspended dominant chords, this workshop discusses how they operate by listening to examples of their use. Topics include: traditional versus modern use, sus-flat-9, sus-add-3, relation to II-V-I progressions, techniques for improvisation. Prerequisite: basic music theory. Saturday, April 30, 3:15 – 5:15 pm $30 advance, $45 day of the workshop
ALTERED DOMINANT AND DOMINANT 13(b9) CHORDS — The How, When and Why of Using Them with Anton Schwartz These two chords provide rich colors that are essential to the palette of intermediate and advanced jazz players. This workshop takes a deep look at the chords and their accompanying scales, examining how each is constructed, why they are constructed that way and how they may be used to maximal effect. Their sounds are contrasted within the context of jazz (e.g. when should one be used rather than the other?) by listening to examples of their use. Additional topics include: different types of “outness”; and lydian dominant, the “sister” of the altered sound. This workshop is appropriate for students with little prior exposure to the subject, as well as students familiar with melodic minor and diminished harmony who wish to deepen their understanding. Prerequisite: an understanding of basic theory and the mixolydian & diminished scales. Sunday, May 1, 11 am – 2 pm $45 advance, $60 day of the workshop Saxophonist Anton Schwartz has won critical acclaim for each of five albums released since 1998. He has performed across the country in major venues from the Monterey Jazz Festival to Yoshi’s, SFJAZZ, Blues Alley and the Blue Note in New York. See Anton’s bio at antonjazz.com.
anton schwartz BEYOND THE BLUES SCALE with Anton Schwartz Designed for players accustomed to using a single scale for each song they improvise over, this interactive workshop introduces participants to the rich experience of improvising over changing harmony. The leap from jamming over a chord or a blues scale to playing meaningfully over moving chords can be over-whelming; this workshop breaks it down through progressive exercises that allow students to HEAR and FEEL the changes of harmony, paving the way for students to play over chord changes as a natural expression of emotion rather than an intellectual exercise. Participants learn to improvise over a 12-bar blues like a jazz musician, bringing out the unique sound of each part of the blues form, rather than treating it all as an undifferentiated whole. Prerequisites: knowledge of major and minor scales and facility on a melodic instrument. Bring your instrument. Sunday, May 15, 11 am – 4 pm (with lunch break) $75 advance, $90 day of the workshop

Young Musicians Program
FACULTY PROFILE
Steve Erquiaga
Guitarist and composer Steve Erquiaga has recorded and toured with such varied artists as Bobby McFerrin, Joe Henderson, Les McCann, John Scofield, David Byrne, The Turtle Island String Quartet, Paulo Bellinati, Jim Nichols, Andy Narell and Paul McCandless. How long have you been teaching at the Jazzschool? I began teaching at the Jazzschool when it was still located on Shattuck Avenue, in the late ’90s. How did you first get started in music? My dad came home from work one evening and he had a little Stella acoustic guitar. I was ten. We went through three teachers before we found the right one. From that point on guitar became my life. I began teaching at the guitar school when I was fifteen and had my first steady, five night a week gig when I was twenty. How can a student make the most of his/her time at the Jazzschool? The Jazzschool is a very unique and special place to study jazz. The faculty is made up of preeminent, practicing jazz musicians who are passionate about their music. In learning to play jazz it is important to get all of the “tools” together: the theory, the scales, the modes, the arpeggios, the chord voicings, etc. It is important to realize that these tools are not music, they are the tools that one uses to create music. Playing in ensembles is important as it
provides a setting for the student to bring these tools together and interact with other musicians in the creative process. Attending faculty concerts is very important as it gives the student a closeup look at experienced improvisers going through this process. What do you hope students will gain from their experience at the Jazzschool? I hope students realize the importance of stretching themselves and not playing it safe, and I hope they leave with a new found confidence. What is your favorite part of teaching students? Seeing that light bulb above a student’s head go on when they’ve “gotten it.” It also gives me great satisfaction in seeing students enjoy the process of making music together.
