Introduction & Calendar Message from the President Dear JCMS Students, Welcome to the Jazzschool! 2017 is an especially important year in that it marks the 20th anniversary of the Jazzschool! Twenty years ago — on Sunday, September 21, 1997, to be exact — the Jazzschool opened its doors to a sold-out concert featuring the Dick Hindman Trio in its first-ever venue on Shattuck Avenue in Downtown Berkeley. Founded with the hope that if we built it, they would come, we enrolled 142 students in 195 classes and workshops that very first quarter! Now, twenty years and an annual average of 2,000 students later, the CJC proudly operates as the only independent, accredited music conservatory in the country devoted to the study and performance of jazz and related styles of music. This fall, we'll celebrate our 20th anniversary with the grand opening of a new 5,500 square-foot campus expansion on Addison Street: additional classrooms, practice rooms, a listening library and performance space that will both meet our current needs and accommodate our future growth for years to come. Watch for the date — you're all invited! Along with the wide array of Jazzschool courses and workshops that you'll find listed in this catalog, the California Jazz Conservatory (CJC) also offers a 4-year Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies with new options for concentrations in Brazilian Jazz and Audio Production (in partnership with the world-renowned Fantasy Studios). The Jazz Studies program is designed for those of you who are aspiring professionals seeking a music degree or just wishing to expand your musical horizons. If you’re interested in knowing more about the degree program, please visit the Bachelor of Music section of the CJC website or email me at susan@cjc.edu. The CJC accepts students on either a full- or part-time basis in both fall and spring semesters. Applications are available online at cjc.edu. Thank you to all of you — our students — for making these last two decades so meaningful for all of us here at the CJC!

Message from the Director I recently came across an intriguing article in the December 31, 2016 issue of the New York Times titled “How to Become a 'Superager'." Author Lisa Barrett contends as we age, some of us experience increased forgetfulness and dwindling attention spans, while others maintain mental acuity into our 80s and beyond on par with healthy 25-year-olds. She reports that through the use of MRI scans, researchers, seeking to understand this phenomenon among people of similar ages, identified physical differences in particular regions of the brain. They found that in the healthiest individuals' brains, these regions are thicker. Based on their findings, they maintain that the way to strengthen these areas is through regular strenuous mental and physical activity. Practicing a musical instrument is a perfect example of a task that requires this level of diligence! For players dedicated to the study and practice of jazz, I’m sure we can all agree that it can be mentally and physically strenuous at times. This music isn’t easy and there are times when hard practicing is frustrating. However, the payoff is immense as we develop the ability to play with heightened skill and expressiveness, while enhancing our mental and physical well-being. So practice hard, everyone! Let’s get as good as possible, together. I look forward to seeing you in class this Spring!

FACULTY PROFILE

Steve Blum

Pianist Steve Blum graduated from CSU Long Beach and California Institute of the Arts, where he studied with Dave Roitstein, Charlie Haden, Larry Koonse, Vinny Golia, and Joe LaBarbera. It was also at CalArts he discovered a deep passion for West African drumming and Indian Classical Music. Steve is an active performer and composer in the Bay Area, playing with The Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, Bells Atlas, Two Aerials, Pavlov's Band/Next Music, The Dirty Snacks Ensemble, Aram Shelton's Marches, Steve Horowitz's Code Ensemble, and The Crushing Spiral Ensemble. In addition he plays in LA-based projects The Baba Orchestra, Blockrad, and more. He also maintains his own solo creative project, the ever-evolving Keyboarchestra. What class(es) are you teaching at the Jazzschool? This quarter I am teaching a Jazz Piano I class. It's a great nuts and bolts where students can learn the basic building blocks of jazz harmony and become proficient with practical keyboard skills.

22

When and how did you begin your career as a jazz teacher? I first taught jazz seriously when I was a student at CalArts. I had a small assistantship teaching lessons to non-jazz majors. The learning environment there was so profound for me — I found myself constantly inspired by my teachers and fellow students. It was the perfect opportunity to begin to learn to channel that same educational spirit. What’s your teaching philosophy? I love to encourage a sense of exploration and curiosity in my students. I believe that learning to play music well is truly a journey of self-discovery. The technical aspects of harmony and rhythm are extremely important, but improvisation is ultimately a form of self-expression. We need to learn to curate and follow our individual musical interests, then naturally synthesize them into our own personal style. This aspect of learning and teaching is extremely exciting and rewarding. What do you hope students will gain from their experience at the Jazzschool? Primarily, a love for the music. The journey to being a great jazz musician starts with being a great jazz fan. Other than that, I hope that they gain the skills and confidence to take their music and share it with others. For some this means accompanying yourself while singing a song for a loved one, for others it could be going to the local jam session and calling a familiar tune. What is your favorite part of teaching? Where to begin? Seeing students learn and grow on a weekly basis. Sharing my own love for music and teaching that music is fun, playful, and personal. Getting to know my students' backgrounds and interests in music. During every class, we put the outside world on hold and focus on ourselves and our art. It is a beautiful thing.

AMERICAN SONGBOOK: COMPOSER WORKSHOP SERIES Songs With a Plot with Maye Cavallaro A singer is the only musician who uses words as well as music to convey ideas and emotions. Most singers want to be not only good musicians but also masterful and engaging storytellers. Some stories are sad or poignant, some are sassy and humorous, some may contain a cautionary tale, but all create a direct line from the singer to the listener. In this workshop we’ll learn some great story songs and explore the techniques and skills to make them personal and memorable. We’ll listen to some gifted storytellers and get ideas for how to make our own interpretations more engaging. The instructor will provide nine lead sheets for songs including practice-backing tracks. In the final week, we’ll work with an accompanist and sing these songs, trying out our arrangement ideas. There will be lots of singing for all three weeks. A warm, charismatic stage performer and accomplished musician, Maye Cavallaro has traveled extensively in Japan and the U.S., both performing and teaching. She has released several CDs as a leader and has been a favorite vocal instructor at the Jazzschool for many years. 3 Sundays: April 30, May 7 and 14 Noon – 3 pm $275 advance, $290 day of workshop

Week one will cover basic warm-up exercises, choosing material, finding the appropriate key, learning a song, recognizing different “grooves and feels,” and a demonstration of some computer software to help you in your practice. We’ll learn a song together and sing it in class. Instructor will provide several different choices of songs with accompaniment tracks and charts for students to study individually. Week two will cover song styling, how to make the lyric meaningful, how to make a song “your own,” performance techniques such as eye contact, what to do with your hands, etc. We’ll each sing a song we’ve chosen from the provided material for the class. Week three will include a professional accompanist and will cover simple arranging ideas such as intros and endings, vamps and turnarounds, key changes, reading a basic chart, counting out and communicating your ideas to accompanists. We’ll sing our songs and apply the techniques we’ve learned in the previous classes. This is a fun and supportive environment, challenging but not intimidating. 3 Sundays: May 21, May 28 and June 4 Noon – 3 pm $275 advance, $290 day of workshop

with Sara Leib From blues to jazz, r&b and everything in between, Leib explores both technical exercises for timbral accuracy and stylistic exercises for genre accuracy to help singers feel comfortable in all styles of contemporary music. From developing a strong “head mix” for singing pop to articulating chromatic licks for scatting through bebop changes, this studentdirected workshop will explore the musical interests of the students in attendance. Singers are encouraged to prepare and bring one song to work on in class. Suggested prerequisite: Basic understanding of music theory fundamentals. Sara Leib has earned a stellar reputation as a talented, innovative, and accessible young jazz singer. Leib has worked with such jazz luminaries as Kurt Elling, Art Lande and Christian McBride, and has shared the stage with Hiromi Uehara and Taylor Eigsti. She has sung and taught on 5 continents, and twice been a featured speaker for the NARAS/GRAMMY Foundation. Jazzschool Young Musicians Program Dear JYMP Students and Parents, I know I speak for all of the middle and high school combo directors when I say that it’s a real privilege to be able to work with the students in the Jazzschool’s Young Musicians Program! To be able to spend time working on an art form that you love with young people who are eager to learn, and seeing them improve over the course of a ten-week quarter is rewarding and inspiring. It’s rewarding because you see the students do things at the end of the quarter that you know you’ve worked on with them, and inspiring because you can see that it’s possible for one to keep growing, no matter what your age and level. Being able to play music with the students and demonstrate the things that you’re describing keeps you on your toes; these young musicians absorb concepts and ideas very quickly, and they have energy to spare! All of this goes toward explaining why the coaches in the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program love their jobs and love teaching your kids. Let’s keep it going! In addition to Spring ensembles, we’ve got lots of exciting summer programs coming up, including our 2-week Summer Youth Program in June, the High School Jazz Intensive in July and the Girls' Jazz & Blues Camp in early August. Please read on for details.

Young Musicians Program

The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program is a year-round compre hensive music education and performance program designed for instrumental and vocal students between the ages of 11 and 18. The Young Musicians Program has been at the center of the Jazzschool’s educational and artistic goals since 1997. Its curriculum provides students with the opportunity to work with professional jazz artists and educators, strengthening performance skills, expanding knowledge of jazz theory and improvisation, and learning more about the foundations of jazz and related styles of music. Students participate in afterschool classes, master classes with nationally known jazz artists, and are featured in public performances in venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

It’s the only place that I know of that offers such high level jazz ensembles for middle & high school students. Last year, my school music program was not challenging enough for me. I loved being involved! — Dylan Everingham

with Anton Schwartz These two chords provide rich colors that are essential to the palette of intermediate and advanced jazz players. This workshop takes a deep look at the chords and their accompanying scales, examining how each is constructed, why they are constructed that way and how they may be used to maximal effect. Their sounds are contrasted within the context of jazz (e.g. when should one be used rather than the other?) by listening to examples of their use. • Highlight similarities with modes in Western music, particularly related to improvisation within defined melodic structures (ragas) that are a defining feature of Indian music.

LA signal lab APPROACHING COMPOSITION THROUGH IMPROVISATION with LA Signal Lab LA Signal Lab composers expand upon various compositional techniques inspired by their dual backgrounds in classical composition and jazz improvisation, with demonstrations by collaborating chamber musicians. Processes range from the extraction and restructuring of compositional material from improvisatory language to incorporating the element of improvisation into through-composed pieces. This workshop will explore new perspectives, reveal hidden connections, and provide specific tools for creating music that breaks boundaries and defies genre. Prerequisites: Previous experience with improvisation and basic musical notation are recommended.

Founded in 2015 by Hitomi Oba, Noah Meites, Dan Marschak and Nick DePinna, “LA Signal Lab” (LASL) is a new-music collective of composer/performers dedicated to challenging artificial boundaries between notated and improvised musical traditions. Members of the collective draw upon their diverse and extensive backgrounds as composers and performers working in musical contexts including jazz, world, popular, and western classical music. Although only a year old, LA Signal Lab has already been nationally recognized for its genre-defying efforts. With a grant from New Music USA, assisted in part by the Helen F. Whitaker Fund and Aaron Copland Fund for Music, LASL launched its ambitious 2015 inaugural program, “Whisper and Howl” featuring four newly commissioned works performed throughout California and recorded in Los Angeles as an album of the same title. Sunday, April 30, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm $30 advance, $45 day of workshop

CONCISE LEAD SHEET AND CHART NOTATION with Madison Bohrer Efficient chart writing makes it easier to rehearse the music, significantly reduces the amount of rehearsal time needed, makes substituting band members a breeze, and frees up the musicians to focus on their playing. All of this helps your songs sound great! Putting notes, rhythms, chords, and lyrics to paper is only the first step in crafting a great lead sheet or arrangement. Step two is making sure your musical content is displayed and organized in a way that reflects the care you took to write it. This workshop will focus on the important process of formatting and notating charts to optimize readability and promote communication between players. It will shed light on common stumbling blocks and how to avoid them. Functional arrangements will be created step by step, and examples of how notation can either confuse or work to a player’s advantage will be addressed. Prerequisites: Attendees must be able to read and write notes and rhythms, and must bring a pencil. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chart of their own to share and analyze. Saxophonist, bandleader and arranger Madison Bohrer draws from the experience of playing professionally in a wide variety of genres including jazz, funk, motown, hip-hop, rock, pop, reggae and salsa. He is a recent CJC graduate and looks forward to continuing to write, play and teach music in the Bay Area. Sunday, April 23, 2 – 4 pm $20 general admission

Support the CJC!

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the California Jazz Conservatory is a unique nonprofit institution, bringing joy and inspiration to young people and adults of all musical interests and skill levels. The CJC has served thousands of Bay Area music students, from the hobbyist to the aspiring professional, and is a creative environment where there’s something for everyone.

• The California Jazz Conservatory’s (CJC) four-year degree program is designed to train the aspiring professional jazz musician. The CJC proudly graduated its first class with the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in 201 2. Our campus will expand to a nearby location in fall of 2017 to help accommodate our growing programs’ student bodies. We are working steadily to build our reputation as one of the country’s top music schools.

• DownBeat magazine and the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival routinely recognize the ensembles in our Jazzschool Young Musicians Program (JYMP). National competitions provide gifted students with the opportunity to perform in adjudicated situations, encouraging further musical development and bolstering confidence.

• The Jazzschool Community Music School (JCMS) provides adults of all ages and skill levels a dynamic learning environment and exciting performance opportunities. Classes are mostly in the evenings and weekends, allowing a greater number of working adults a chance to pursue their love of music

outside of their day-to-day routines. Students frequently remind us how important the school is to them, providing enrichment and joy.

• Workshops, led by visiting artists and CJC faculty, allow for intensive, short-term focus on specific aspects of music theory and performance. Only the CJC offers a year-round schedule and such an array of learning options.

• Hardymon Hall, the CJC’s intimate concert venue, holds year-round, high-caliber performances by guest artists, faculty members and students, at affordable prices. Support for the CJC comes in many forms and is much needed and appreciated. Financial support helps us defray day-to-day expenses, keep fees down, offer scholarships and more. In-kind gifts and volunteerism are other ways to give. For more information on how to support the CJC, or to make a tax-deductible gift, visit www.cjc.edu and click on the “Support” tab. Or, contact Mary D’Orazi, Development Associate, at mary@cjc.edu and 510.845-5373, ext. 19. (We acknowledge our donors in our quarterly JCMS catalogs and on our website. Current donors are on pages 70 to 75.)
