Overview The California Jazz Conservatory is an innovative nonprofit organization dedicated to the study and performance of jazz — America’s indigenous art form — and related styles of music from around the world. Founded in 1997, the institution has recently been granted accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), making it the only accredited, stand-alone conservatory devoted to jazz studies in the United States. The school is located in the heart of the vibrant Downtown Berkeley Arts District, home to Berkeley Rep, the Freight & Salvage and many other arts organizations. Hailed as one of the nation’s most comprehensive schools of jazz and related styles of music, the CJC offers instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages and skill levels a broad spectrum of performance ensembles, lectures, workshops and private instruction. Courses are designed for the professional musician, the serious student and the jazz aficionado seeking personal enrichment. A multifaceted institution, the CJC comprises several key components:

CALIFORNIA JAZZ CONSERVATORY The California Jazz Conservatory is a music school offering the aspiring professional a comprehensive 4-year degree program culminating in the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies. The CJC provides a challenging curriculum of performance, jazz theory and improvisation, ear training, composition, arranging, transcription and analysis, and music history courses, taught by professional artists and educators. Coursework also includes music business, music technology and financial planning, thoroughly preparing students for a fulfilling career in the performing arts.

JAZZSCHOOL COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL (JCMS) The JCMS provides music education and performance opportunities for people of all ages and levels of ability. Consisting of the JCMS Adult Music Program and the JCMS Young Musicians Program, the JCMS operates year-round on a quarterly basis and offers over 100 ensembles, courses and workshops to build all aspects of musicianship. Students are routinely featured in concert performances, open to the public. With a formidable faculty of renowned musicians and educators, the JCMS is a cornerstone of the Bay Area’s thriving music scene.

JCMS ADULT MUSIC PROGRAM The Jazzschool Adult Music Program offers life-enriching opportunities to learn about and play jazz and related styles of music from throughout the world. Courses are available for both instrumentalists and vocalists, and everyone from young adult to senior citizen is welcome. Instruction and performances occur primarily in late afternoons, evenings and on weekends, making the program easily accessible to the working professional.


JCMS YOUNG MUSICIANS PROGRAM The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program offers middle and high school students of all skill levels a wide variety of combos, big bands and vocal performance courses throughout the entire year, as well as camps during the summer. Select ensembles participate in national competitions, and Jazzschool bands have routinely taken top awards from DownBeat, the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival and others.

WORKSHOPS Visiting artists and Jazzschool faculty lead fascinating and practical workshops, typically a single session of two or three hours in length and held on Saturdays and Sundays. Content may focus on any specific aspect of jazz theory or performance, such as playing in odd time signatures or the art of vocal improvisation. Past workshops have been taught by prominent musicians from Bobby McFerrin to Dave Liebman, Janis Siegel, Peter Erskine, Sheila Jordan, Nguyên Lê and others.

CONCERTS The CJC facility includes an intimate venue with seating capacity of 100. Throughout the year, faculty and students perform for the public, providing a realworld incubator for developing new concepts and gaining audience exposure in the competitive Bay Area environment. High-profile artists have performed at the school, including Terence Blanchard, Art Lande, Kim Nalley, Taylor Eigsti, Sachal Vasandani and many more.

JAZZCAFFÈ Located within the CJC facility, the Jazzcaffè serves up delectable fare for students and visitors to enjoy a convenient bite to eat. A changing menu features house-made soups, salads and sandwiches, as well as beer, wine, espresso and desserts. Drop by for a great meal to match the great music!

TRANSPORTATION CJC BOOKSTORE The CJC’s in-house retail store is a treasure trove of jazz-related reading and listening materials. It provides students, teachers and the public with convenient access to extraordinary books, recordings, videos and accessories.

The CJC is easily accessible by car and public transportation. The downtown Berkeley BART station and AC Transit bus stops are within a block. There is a public parking garage just a few steps away on Addison, in addition to metered street parking throughout the neighborhood.

Jazzschool Community Music School The Jazzschool Community Music School (JCMS) is dedicated to the study and performance of jazz and related styles of music from around the world. There are dozens of exciting and fun options for both instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages and skill levels. The JCMS operates year-round on a quarterly basis, normally 10 weeks during the fall and winter, 9 weeks in the spring and 7 weeks in the summer. Performance Ensembles JCMS performance ensembles delve into a wide range of styles including jazz (stan­dards, hard-bop, post-bop, fusion), Latin jazz, Brazilian, blues, R&B, funk, pop and Balkan (eastern European). Ensembles are available for instrumentalists and vocalists at the beginning, intermediate and ad­vanced levels. Groups range in size from the trio to the big band. A placement audition is required.

Instrumental Courses JCMS instrumental courses provide study of a specific instrument in a group setting. Courses are available for saxophone, harmonica, piano/keyboard, guitar, bass and drums/percussion. Instruction is available for beginners (covering basic technique and instrumental skills) and also for more advanced players (focused on jazz style, harmony, improvisation and more). Theory, Improvisation and Composition The JCMS offers many courses in areas including theory, improvisation, ear training, composition and arranging, music production, music business and more. Vocal Courses JCMS vocal courses provide an opportunity for singers at all levels to improve style and technique in a group setting. Per­­formance courses are offered in jazz, Latin, blues, R&B and pop genres. Complete beginners, singers returning to music, and more advanced vocalists can all find courses appropriate for their interests.


Jazzschool Young Musicians Program The JYMP offers a range of courses for middle and high school students. JYMP ensembles are available for beginning, intermediate and advanced instrumentalists. The program includes small groups focused on improvisation and big bands that delve into style and repertoire. Vocal performances courses are also available. JYMP ensembles have repeatedly taken DownBeat student music awards and been honored at prestigious jazz festivals in the US and abroad. A placement audition is required. Workshops JCMS workshops provide intensive instruction in a single two- or three-hour session. Led by visiting artists and JCMS faculty, workshops typically focus on a specific aspect of jazz, such as music transcription techniques or the art of vocal accompaniment. Prominent musicians including Richie Beirach, Gretchen Parlato, Taylor Eigsti, Mike Clark and others have taught past workshops.

Faculty A distinguished faculty of professional musicians and educators leads JCMS courses and workshops. Our educators have played with some of the music world’s biggest names, including Sting, Pat Metheny, Joe Henderson, Ray Charles, Dave Liebman, Carlos Santana, McCoy Tyner, Pete Escovedo, Diana Krall, Eddie Palmieri, Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis, Joey DeFrancesco, Bobby Hutcherson, John Mayer, Stevie Wonder and countless others. Hello and welcome! It is my pleasure to present dozens of fun and engaging courses and workshops offered at the Jazzschool Community Music School this Winter quarter. Jazz ensembles range from the Beginning Jazz Ensemble (for musicians with some instrumental facility and knowledge of jazz harmony, but minimal ensemble experience) through intermediate and advanced-level groups, including Jazz Standards for Gigs, Hard Bop, Post Bop, the music of specific composers, including Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, Music of the Masters, the McCain Jazz Ensembles, the Big Band, multiple Piano Trio and Guitar Trio sections and a Free Jazz Ensemble. Branching into other styles, we also offer blues, salsa, Balkan, African and pop ensembles. All ensembles are placed by audition. Our sequence of piano courses is one of the most comprehensive anywhere and ranges from Piano I for total beginners, through multiple levels of jazz piano. The guitar department is also extensive offering Beginning Guitar, Music Theory for Guitarists, blues and jazz at multiple levels and Brazilian fingerstyle guitar. We offer three levels of bass courses for electric and upright bass. Drum and percussion courses include Beginning Drum Set and several specialized courses like Improve Your Groove, Jazz Drumming, Afro-Venezuelan and Latin Percussion. Theory, improvisation and composition courses are also offered for all instruments. Learn more about our many vocal courses on page 30 and young musicians courses on page 43. Many one-day and short-term workshops are also offered, with amazing visiting artists including Victoria Theodore, Ben Goldberg, Michael Blake (with Frank Kimbrough, Ben Allison and Rudy Royston), Rez Abbasi (with Bill Ware, Stephan Crump and Eric McPherson) and many, many more! I’m proud of what we’re able to offer to the Bay Area music community as we approach 19 years in operation in Berkeley! Adult Performance Ensembles The Jazzschool Community Music School (JCMS) offers numerous performance ensembles for beginning, intermediate and advanced instrumentalists and vocalists. Students are placed in ensembles by audition and requirements may include the following: playing selected scales; playing and/or improvising over a piece of your choice; improvising over a 12-bar blues or other pieces provided at the audition; and sight-reading. JAZZ STANDARDS FOR GIGS Develop the skills and repertoire needed for typical jazz gigs through the study and performance of common jazz styles including swing, bossa, jazz waltz and ballads. The Free Jazz Ensemble is designed for improvising musicians interested in stretching the boundaries of harmony, time and form. Each quarter the ensemble will focus on the music of a particular master musician. This winter we will focus on the later music of John Coltrane, roughly spanning music from the classic A Love Supreme album through the end of his life. The African Ensemble is one of three consecutive courses comprising the World Groove Ensemble; students may enroll in any one or all three. This class features deep, uplifting grooves from various regions and cultures. Repertoire may include Afrobeat, highlife, juju, South African township/mirabi, Malian, Ethiopian, Senegalese, Congolese or other styles. The class offers a joyful opportunity to discover or deepen your musical and spiritual connection to African music. Learn to play the blues and blues-related styles. Emphasis on the groove as found on recordings of Charlie Christian, T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Jack McDuff, Louis Jordan and other “jump” blues and New Orleans masters. Prerequisite: knowledge of 12-bar blues.

An overview of essential tunes for today’s dance gigs. Ranging from classic songs by Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Aretha Franklin to contemporary party hits by Daft Punk, Pharrell, Katy Perry and others. Rhythm section players learn to navigate real-world gig scenarios such as learning tunes by ear and working with lyric sheets. All tunes have complete horn arrangements and lots of solo space for everyone! A continuation of Jazz Piano I. Learn more advanced chord voicings and soloing techniques. Standard reharmonization techniques are also presented. Prerequisites: ability to play 3-note voicings with proper voice leading through a jazz standard (e.g., “All The Things You Are” or similar), ability to improvise on a 12-bar blues in time, playing 3rds and 7ths in the left hand. Learn about the colorful history of piano blues while listening to and playing classic tunes from all eras. Develop your own bluesy sound by playing song excerpts, improvising with others, and composing original themes. The “nuts and bolts” of blues piano such as bass lines, right-hand licks, intros and endings, 12- and 8-bar forms and accompaniment grooves are all covered. Styles include early piano blues, Chicago, boogie-woogie, jump blues, jazz-blues, early rock ‘n’ roll and a taste of New Orleans. Each student picks an artist to study in greater depth. FACULTY PROFILE

Seward McCain

Bassist Seward McCain is a San Francisco native. He was a longtime member of the Vince Guaraldi trio, performing, recording albums, and making soundtracks for “Peanuts” specials for television. He currently tours with Grammy winner Dame Cleo Laine. He has recorded or performed with Mark Murphy, Dianne Schuur, Ernestine Anderson, Mose Allison, Woody Herman, Eddie Henderson, Dick Hindman and many others. How long have you been teaching at the Jazzschool? I've been teaching ensembles and improvisation classes since around the time the Jazzschool was founded, in the original location on Shattuck Avenue. How did you first get started in music? 5th grade school band on trumpet. My first professional gig was at age 12, playing 3rd trumpet in a trumpet trio for an Easter sunrise service in a church in Portola Valley. It paid $15. Gigs don't pay much more now!

Theory, Improvisation and Composition THEORY & IMPROV INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC THEORY

Learn the basic skills needed to begin any serious study of music. Topics include: music notation, time signatures, key signatures, rhythmic training, major scales, intervals, transposition, chord structure, harmonic progression, ear training and an introduction to musical form and composition. Required texts: Practical Theory Complete by Sandy Feldstein and Jazz Improvisation: A Pocket Guide by Dan Haerle (available at the CJC Bookstore). An intensive workout on jazz material, for all instruments except drums. Improve your ability to improvise through chord changes. Scales, modes, arpeggios, common licks and patterns are covered. Call-and-response exercises are presented to strengthen listening ability. Workouts are accompanied by metronome and play-along tracks. Extensive playing for most of each class session, memorizing most of the material with only a small emphasis on reading. Material is based on mainstream bop and post-bop styles. Introduction Happy New Year! The winter quarter is upon us and we look forward to another year with a wonderful assortment of vocal classes, workshops and concerts! East Coast artists Roseanna Vitro and Charenee Wade will appear in concert and present workshops. The opportunity to be up close and personal with singers from outside the Bay Area is one of the qualities that makes our intimate venue so unique. We are grateful to present beloved Bay Area singers Clairdee and Maye Cavallaro for concerts and workshops as well. There are numerous performance classes being offered, culminating in end-of-quarter public concerts. Genres include jazz, R&B, salsa, blues and pop. THE MUSIC OF THELONIOUS  MONK FOR VOCALISTS

One of the giants of modern jazz, Thelonious Monk’s compositions are standards in every sense of the word. Vocalists are often drawn to Monk by his beautiful ballads (“Ruby My Dear,” “Reflections”), but there are many other gems that few singers explore. This class will focus exclusively on the music of Thelonious Monk in a vocal context, using lyrics by Jon Hendricks, Abbey Lincoln, Mike Ferro, and others. Charts in each singer's key will be provided, and a professional accompanist will join the class in week four. Open to all. Improvisation is one of the defining characteristics of jazz. Learn melodies, syllables and methods to “make the changes” of a song. Based on an instrumental foundation using theoretical practice techniques and transcriptions along with methods developed by Bobby McFerrin and Bob Stoloff. Students will learn to converse with other musicians in each moment. An end-of-quarter performance with a full band is included. THE SINGER AND THE SONG All the best jazz singers are master storytellers as well as musicians. This class will focus on developing our skills as singers, artists and song interpreters. Topics include choosing the right song; using various grooves, tempos and arrangements; learning and memorizing the melody and lyrics; phrasing; improvisation skills; communicating with an accompanist; and stage presence. In this supportive and challenging environment, students work on these skills and create arrangements for songs, culminating in an end-of-quarter performance. Weeks 2 and 3 include a professional accompanist, while weeks 4 and 5 and the performance include a full trio. For intermediate to advanced singers. VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE Sing music from The Manhattan Transfer, The Hi-Lo’s, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross and more. Arrangements are hand-tailored to the ability and interest of the ensemble members. Repertoire includes a combination of a cappella and accompanied tunes. Learn how to learn this music, with a little bit of added history for fun. Rehearsal tools are made available (including sound files with individual parts as well as the entire arrangement). Male and female singers of all ages are welcome. Prerequisites: some vocal experience is necessary, either in choirs or solo voice.

pop POP SINGING Work on singing lead and background vocals in a pop music context. A signature song is selected for each singer based on their voice, then background vocals are worked out, chorded and polished for each song. Sing with backing tracks and/ or acoustic guitar. BLUES VOCAL FUNSHOP II — MUSIC OF NEW ORLEANS New Orleans, the birthplace of American music, fuses all sorts of different aspects of blues, zydeco, calypso, dixieland, rhythm and blues and, of course, jazz. The sound of New Orleans satisfies the soul and makes people want to jump up and dance! Sing the music of Professor Longhair, Guitar Slim, Earl King, Doctor John, Irma Thomas, the Neville Brothers and Allen Toussaint. Guitarist Danny Caron (who played with the great Clifton Chenier) works with Pamela each week with full band accompaniment added as the term progresses. Learn the style, rhythm and technique of salsa vocal music while learning to play Latin hand percussion instruments. Instructor provides instruments like guiro, maracas and claves to use each week. As the term progresses, join forces with the Salsa II instrumental ensemble (see page 17) as you work to develop a performance set. VOCAL MENTOR PROGRAM CENTER STAGE — A MENTORED PROGRAM FOR CONCERT DEVELOPMENT with Maye Cavallaro Work through the process of presenting a full-length, public, professional-level concert. Candidates work with their mentor over the course of three or four months, preparing their concert by choosing songs, working out arrangements, deciding on sequencing, and developing patter and stage presence. Lessons also include making a budget, hiring and rehearsing musicians and developing a marketing plan. Candidates will be most successful if they are advanced students who have some performing experience in classes and workshops or in a professional environment. A repertoire of 15 to 20 memorized songs in various styles is recommended. This is a unique opportunity for singers to design a performance that reflects a personalized artistic vision. Concert dates are available throughout the year. This program also includes:

• A professional sound technician and quality live recording of your performance

VOCAL WORKSHOPS AMERICAN SONGBOOK: Composer Workshop Series The Music of Richard Rodgers with Maye Cavallaro Richard Rodgers composed music for more than 900 songs and for 43 Broadway musicals. He is best known for his songwriting partnerships with the lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II. Hart wrote introspective and moody lyrics, including the songs “Little Girl Blue,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “It Never Entered My Mind.” Hammerstein wrote upbeat and exuberant lyrics, including “People Will Say We’re in Love,” “My Favorite Things,” and “I Have Dreamed.” Rodgers wrote gorgeous melodies for both lyricists and has penned some of the most enduring standards in the American Songbook. In this workshop we’ll explore and sing some of these great songs. We’ll also listen to how some jazz greats have interpreted these songs and get ideas for our own arrangements. Students are provided with 10 leadsheets for songs including practice-backing tracks. In the final week we’ll work with an accompanist and sing these songs trying out our own arrangement ideas. Faith Winthrop

Vocal instructor Faith Winthrop's career is as storied as her extensive songbook. Early in her career, Nat Hentoff wrote, "Faith Winthrop's warmth and intensity, coupled with her surety of intonation and inventiveness, makes her one of the swingingest singers to be heard today." Encouraged early on by Billie Holiday to pursue a career as a singer, Faith has shared the stage with Woody Allen, Barbara Streisand, Mort Sahl, the Count Basie Orchestra and Mel Torme. In her San Francisco studio, she has coached a number of acclaimed artists, including Ben Vereen, Al Jarreau, Holly Near, Wesla Whitfield, Paula West, Madeline Eastman and Jacqui Naylor. She remains a leading specialist in vocal technique and performance skills and delights in inspiring not only accomplished singers, but also beginners and those whose passion for singing has been renewed. When did you begin your career as a vocal jazz teacher? My teaching career began here in San Francisco in 1970. At that time, there was no one teaching jazz, but generally classical or "popular" voice teachers who used popular music books (fake books were rare), insisting that singers use the keys set out in the song collections. Around 1980 I joined Mills College as one of their first vocal jazz teachers. I have been happily teaching since 1970 — and still going! How did you begin your career as a singer? My singing career began in Boston in 1953, working all those Mafia clubs and pay-off joints, as well as gigs in Boston, where I got to sing 6 nights a week! (Heaven) Romance and fate brought me to San

Francisco in 1955, where I became the "house singer" at the fabled hungry i, working with Vince Guaraldi, Dean Reilly and Eddie Duran. What’s your teaching philosophy? Ah, my teaching philosophy has pretty much to do with a natural focus. To be the best possible singer, I believe that all three aspects are so important — the physical, the mental and the spiritual. It's so important to learn how to stand well, supporting good intake of air, and how to tap into the emotional intention of the song being sung. Singing should be easy and fun — I often suggest to singers that they "don't GO to sing — but let singing COME to them." What are you currently working on? I am creating a new show of songs pertaining to age and also working with a chorus, the Frommtones, which I founded at the Fromm Institute at USF, as well as leading singers at AgeSong in San Francisco. I am still teaching at my home studio — and happily at the CJC! How blessed I am!

Introduction Dear JYMP students and parents, I’m once again thrilled to be a part of this incredible institution, providing such a unique learning environment for students of all ages. This fall, the Young Musicians Program is as filled with talented and hardworking students as ever, and I continue to enjoy connecting students with inspiring teachers and ensembles. Our instructors include me, Joe Bagale, Dave Eshelman, Rob Ewing, Kyra Gordon, Charles Hamilton, Colin Hogan, Kasey Knudsen, Erika Oba and Michael Zilber, and I know I can speak for all of us when I say we’re truly dedicated to providing a great experience for the young musicians participating in the program. This fall we continue our association with the Sound Room in Oakland, featuring our youth groups on First Fridays, and Doc’s Lab in San Francisco, where many of our student groups open for the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra (a 17-piece professional big band). These two clubs provide a chance for emerging young artists to play in new and exciting settings, and in the case of Doc’s Lab, a chance to listen and learn from some of the top musicians in the Bay Area. Our Jazzschool Studio Band, which returned from a triumphant summer tour of Europe, will be featured alongside the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra at the Freight and Salvage on December 7.

Jazzschool Young Musicians Program The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program is a year-round compre­ hensive music education and performance program designed for instrumental and vocal students between the ages of 11 and 18. The Young Musicians Program has been at the center of the Jazzschool’s educational and artistic goals since 1997. Its curriculum provides students with the opportunity to work with professional jazz artists and educators, strengthening performance skills, expanding knowledge of jazz theory and improvisation, and learning more about the foundations of jazz and related styles of music. Students participate in afterschool classes, master classes with nationally known jazz artists, and are featured in public performances in venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

It’s the only place that I know of that offers such high level jazz ensembles for middle & high school students. Last year, my school music program was not challenging enough for me. I loved being involved! — Dylan Everingham

2016 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS JYMP ensembles require a commitment of three quarters (fall, winter and spring). Students unable to commit to a full school year are still encouraged to audition, however, priority will be given to those who can remain in the program for the entire school year. Students wishing to audition mid-year will be placed in the program based on availability of open spots in ensembles and the student’s ability level. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate all students but it is our mission to find a place for everyone if at all possible.

PLACEMENT & AUDITION REQUIREMENTS – WINTER 2016 AUDITION MATERIALS Entering musicians are asked to prepare two skill-level appropriate jazz standards, improvise over a 12-bar blues (optional) or rhythm changes (for high school students only) and sight-read.

HOW TO SCHEDULE AN AUDITION To schedule an audition, please fill out an application online at cjc.edu/youth_auditions. After your application is received, you will be contacted within 1 – 2 weeks with an audition time. Auditions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and will be scheduled at the earliest available time. Students will be contacted with placement information following the audition.

AUDITION BY VIDEO (OPTIONAL) Students have the option of submitting an online video audition rather than scheduling an in-person audition. Students submitting their audition online are still required to fill out an online application (see above). On the application form, please select live audition or video submission. PIANO AND GUITAR PLAYERS Follow the above instructions with only one change: after improvising, please demonstrate comping/voicings on a blues or rhythm changes.

DRUMMERS Please demonstrate the following styles: • swing, bossa nova, funk/rock. • Demonstrate each style at various tempos (i.e., slow, medium, fast) • On each style/tempo please “trade fours” with yourself (4 bars of time, 4 bars of solo, etc.) • Play at least 16 bars of each example After you have completed your video, upload your audition to YouTube and title the video with your name (Example: John Smith Jazzschool Audition). You should make this a private video (unless you don’t mind it being available to the public). Once the video is uploaded, send a link to erik @cjc.edu. INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES High school and middle school jazz ensembles are offered Monday through Thursday in the late afternoon and early evening and during the day on Saturday. While we make every effort to accommodate scheduling requests, specific placements are based on the results of an audition. Note: all prices listed are per quarter.

COMPOSITION THE PROCESS OF LETTING GO: Composition and its Expression in Ensemble Playing with Allison Au Toronto-based saxophonist Allison Au leads her quartet in an open rehearsal of a new composition. It’s easy for composers to become attached to the idea of their own compositions, but it can be of great benefit to be open to suggestions from other band members, whether it be changing a groove, bass line, comping pattern, or perhaps even cutting a section of the tune altogether. The members of Allison’s group will share their approach to this process, which has helped lead to group cohesiveness and acclaim on the Canadian jazz scene. Open to all. Since its formation in 2009, The Allison Au Quartet has maintained a steady performance schedule at Toronto’s major jazz clubs. The group was the recipient of the TD Jazz Fellowship Scholarship in 2011 and the Alfred and Phyllis Balm Scholarship in 2012 to attend the Winter Creative Music Residency at the acclaimed Banff Centre. DRUMS DEVELOPING A JAZZ VOCABULARY: Jazz Drumming Workshop with Hamir Atwal Drummer Hamir Atwal provides insight into developing jazz vocabulary, exploring musical concepts as applied to the drumset from the bebop era to the present day. Topics include: supporting and interacting with other instruments in a musical context; time/feel, form, free form/improvisation and resolution points; transcription ideas; and the history of some important jazz figures who developed different approaches to keeping time and soloing on the drumset. GUITAR GETTING YOUR IMPROVISING INTO SHAPE: Guitar Workshop with David Becker Learn to use chord shapes (specifically major, minor, diminished and augmented triads) in building single line solos. The use of these shapes demystifies the guitar fret board by showing exactly how it relates to diatonic harmony, without the use of single note scales. Topics covered include: Utilizing shapes to simplify playing over altered chords, using chromatic notes to connet chord shapes, and playing “outside” of the changes. Develop the ability to easily find chord tones, outline the harmony while improvising and find new chord voicings directly related to the lines being played. CREATIVE CHORD VOICINGS FOR GUITAR with Steve Erquiaga

HEALTH

The way in which a chord is voiced can invoke a certain color or personality. Whether comping or soloing, the same chord can be voiced to sound warm and dark, or colorful and edgy. Furthmore, the placement of chords in time and how they are played can radically transform the rhythmic flow of the music. A chord’s placement can provide a sense of momentum and help propel the music forward, or simply provide color, creating a floating effect within the music. This workshop will explore various chord voicing techniques such as slash chords, quartal harmony (clusters voiced in 4ths), the use of minor second intervals and harmonics, and looking at the fingerboard in a more pianistic way. Prerequisites: familiarity with seventh chords and knowledge of the fret board

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE FOR MUSICIANS with Laura Klein

Laura Klein is Associate Professor of the Alexander Technique at the CJC and has a private teaching practice in Berkeley. She is certified by the American Society of the Alexander Technique (AmSAT) and the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT). She is a pianist, composer and recording artist, co-leads FivePlay Jazz Quintet, and maintains a busy performing schedule.

Guitarist and Bay Area native Steve Erquiaga has performed and recorded with such artists as Bobby McFerrin, Joe Henderson, Les McCann, John Scofield, David Byrne and The Turtle Island String Quartet. His music can be heard in such films as “The Firm,” “Nina takes a Lover” and “Forest Gump.” He is a faculty member at the California Jazz Conservatory, teaches with jazz educator Jamey Aebersold, and is an international clinician and a published author.

Playing an instrument or singing is a complex process involving not just hands, embouchure, or voice, but your whole self. Habits of tension and misuse can hinder free musical expression. The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for preventing injuries, improving overall ease, and increasing poise in performance. This method is taught at performing arts institutions all over the world, and can be applied to any activity. In this introductory workshop, a few participants will receive demonstration “hands-on” work with their instrument. Musicians of all levels, from beginners to professionals, are welcome. STRINGS FINDING YOUR MUSICAL VOICE with Sara Caswell Instant access to music from all corners of the globe has had an exciting effect on musicians and audiences alike, such that the ability to define music by a singular style is an increasing challenge. Every day, musical groups form whose repertoire is as unique as the musicians who perform it. In this session, the members of the trio 9 Horses will discuss their individual backgrounds and influences, how they’ve come together to create a singular voice and sound, and the adventures that come with this professionally. An in-depth look at legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans’s personal life and music, and his influence on the world of jazz piano. We’ll review Bill’s life story, and take a probing look into his music as he evolved into a great innovator and a major force in twentieth-century music, as both performer and composer. A hands-on analysis of Bill’s own pieces, and his approach to standards will provide clear insight into his compositional talents, and a working understanding of his remarkable ability to create such compelling richness and beauty in his music.

Dave Thompson has been playing and teaching for more than 30 years. He studied with George Shearing and JoAnne Brackeen in New York, and with Don Haas in the Bay Area. TUNE LEARNING AND REPERTOIRE DEVELOPMENT with Patrick Wolff Often in the process of learning to improvise, musicians focus on learning scales and phrases and how to apply them to chord progressions, but the importance of learning tunes and developing a repertoire is sometimes overlooked, with players instead relying on charts, fake books and play-along apps. It’s a huge asset as a player to develop a repertoire of tunes you can draw on at jam sessions and gigs without the need for sheet music or other aids. In addition to the benefit of developing knowledge of a shared body of standards, learning tunes is an essential part of developing phrasing, melodic sense, an understanding of how to apply theory. In this workshop, Patrick Wolff leads a discussion on effective techniques for tune learning. Recommended for all players interested in repertoire development. Prerequisites: some basic jazz theory knowledge is recommended. MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC with Itamar Borochov Trumpeter Itamar Borochov presents a discussion on the fundamental elements of the music of the Middle East and North Africa. What is Maqam? Tarab? Sultana? Raz? Taqsim? We will listen to examples using a wealth of recordings that explore the depth of this intriguing music and its elements. We will also examine the important role of music in the Arab world, as well as its relation to the religioussecular axis, and how it parallels the music of America: jazz, blues and gospel. Itamar will demonstrate quartertone playing and the various Arabic scales, modes and selected rhythms. This will be followed by the hands-on learning and playing of selected compositions, with the students. Please bring your instrument! Intriguingly, he plays arabic modes on the trumpet, which feature quarter tone intervals, an unusually beautiful approach to performing which sets him apart from other players. However, Itamar is first and foremost a jazz player. Fascinated as a youngster by Clark Terry and Booker Little, Itamar’s continued thirst for knowledge soon brought him to the attention of Curtis Fuller and Dr. Billy Taylor, in whose groups he performed. SAYING IT: Developing Your Own Musical Voice with Joshua Breakstone

joshua breakstone DEVELOPING YOUR BALLAD SKILLS with Anton Schwartz The slow songs of the jazz repertoire may be less technically demanding than their faster counterparts, but they require unique skills and great artistry to play credibly. In this workshop we tackle those skills head-on, focusing on phrasing and feel, and outline practical avenues for improving artistry. We also explore rubato, cadenzas and double-time feel, (as time allows.) Bring your instrument (recommended). Prerequisites: facility on a melodic instrument or vocals, improvisational experience, and knowledge of basic jazz harmony. How do we develop our own voice on our instrument? How do we learn to express ourselves in a unique and personal way? The dynamics we use in speaking are literally the same dynamics that allow us to communicate on a deep level and in a unique way in music. We’ll explore applying the dynamics of the voice — the dynamics of speech — to jazz improvisation and see how each of us can use these dynamics to develop a unique musical voice. All of this will be discussed within a framework of jazz history. We’ll also go into ideas about repertoire, practicing, control, phrasing, how to listen to jazz, the functioning of the rhythm section, etc. For guitarists in attendance, we’ll also briefly touch on some of the traps and pitfalls intrinsic to the guitar itself. Participants will be able to direct the focus of what’s covered at the workshop and we’ll concentrate on those topics of most importance to those present. Examples will be demonstrated and workshop participants will play as well — bring your instruments! That is no easy feat! Yet saxophonist Michael Blake thinks the social nature of the music engages us all to tap into its storyline and feel part of the music alongside its masters and apprentices. Instructions and Application To enroll in the JCMS Winter Quarter, please read these important instructions! For courses that don’t require an audition or consultation, sign up online at cjc.edu or complete the application on page 79 and submit it along with full tuition. Students may register online, by phone (510.845.5373), mail, fax (510.841.5373) or in person. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be guaranteed without full payment. Students applying for courses that are full may be placed on a waiting list. The JCMS accepts checks (made payable to California Jazz Conservatory), cash, VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Payment plans are available. To register in courses requiring a consultation or audition please call the JCMS at 510.845.5373 for assistance with placement.

PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES Admission is based on a confidential, friendly 20-minute placement audition to determine where students are best suited to play or sing. Placement auditions address students’ overall musicality, technical ability, stylistic preference(s) and availability. Please fill out the online ensemble application form at cjc.edu/ensemble or call the Jazzschool to schedule an appointment (510.845.5373).

Please note: With the exception of the fall quarter, students previously enrolled in a performance ensemble have the option of re-enrolling in that same course again on a consecutive quarterly basis within the academic year without having to re-audition. New students wishing to enroll in a performance ensemble in winter, spring and/or summer quarters must schedule a placement audition or telephone consultation and will be accepted on a parts-available basis.

JCMS FACULTY AND COURSE SCHEDULES Given prestigious national and international performance and/or lecture opportunities that arise, Jazzschool faculty, course offerings and/or class schedules may be subject to change. The Jazzschool makes every effort to provide its students with the optimal educational experience possible under these or any other circumstances at all times.

REFUND POLICY Course and ensemble tuition includes a $50 non-refundable deposit. Requests to drop must be received in writing within 48 hours of the first class meeting to qualify for a refund; please visit the main office or e-mail drop@cjc.edu to request a refund. Refunds for remaining tuition are not possible after the 48-hour drop deadline. $100 per week of camp and intensive tuition is non-refundable; the remainder is refundable only until 30 days prior to the start of the program.
