The 3 screen installation focuses on Shetland haaf fishing of the 18th & 19th Centuries, a unique yet elusive part of Shetland’s heritage. There were over one hundred fishing station sites around the coast of the Shetland and its islands. Once hives of activity, little is now left of the makeshift booths and bods where communities of fishermen and traders made temporary homes over the summer months. These are landscapes that now conceal more than they reveal.
Confusing Shadow with Substance examines the interplay of past with present at Stenness, Northmavine, one of Shetland’s busiest former fishing stations, where hundreds of men worked and lived. The installation is concerned with the slippage between that which is gone, that which remains, and the drift between the two. Opening evening: Sept 3rd, from 6.30pm Open: September 4th - 5th, 2-6pm Venue: Easthouse Heritage Centre, Papil, West Burra, Shetland, ZE2 9UY
