FAQ’s What is SheVaCon? SheVaCon is a three (3) day convention that is run by fans for fans. We celebrate all things from the Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror genres, as well as all things in between. It’s a convention where you can meet many wonderful and talented guest authors and artists, and even a few celebrity guests as well. In addition to our guests, we also offer many fun and interesting activities. Discussion panels, Demonstrations, Workshops, Costume Contest, Art Show, Dealers/Exhibitors room, Gaming, Fan Groups, and so much more. We consider ourselves a ‘multi-media’ convention since we cover so many different genres, and include a wide variety of activities and events for the whole family to enjoy. SheVaCon stands for: Shenandoah Valley Convention. SheVaCon’s humble beginnings started in 1993 in Staunton, VA - but has now grown up to be the premier Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention in Southwestern Virginia. And we are proud to have you join us for our 19th year, and hope to see you in the coming years as we continue. How Long Does the Convention Run? SheVaCon runs from March 4 - 6, 2011. While specific rooms such as the Art Show and Dealers/Exhibitors rooms will close nightly at their specified hours; select panels, screenings, and special events will continue into the evening. Who’s the Organizer of SheVaCon? SheVaCon, Inc. is the parent company of SheVaCon, and it’s volunteer Staff organize SheVaCon each and every year. Who Needs a Badge? Any and all attendee’s eight (8) years of age or older. There are 3-Day badges for Adults & Children (8-12), as well as Day Passes/Badges for Adults & Children. *Note all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and/or grown-up. Badges must be worn at all times and easily visible while attending the convention. Can I Take Photos? Yes, well... for the most part. SheVaCon encourages it’s attendee’s to take still photographs and videos of their convention experience. However, there are times and places that any type of photography is prohibited like in the Art Show, and during certain workshops and/or panels. Also, please understand that some guests may not pose for photographs with fans. Guests have the right to their privacy, and if they ask not to have their photograph taken, please respect their wishes. Will I Be On Camera or Photographed? SheVaCon attracts local, and national fans and media personnel who all love the Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Horror genres, so it is very likely that you will be photographed or recorded. By attending SheVacon, you give your consent to be photographed and appear on camera.

Letter from the Con Chair Hello and Welcome, We’ve reached SheVaCon 19, and with this year’s convention there have been a lot of changes. We hope that all of them are for the best, but as we all know every change will be interpreted differently by different people. Everyone on the SheVaCon staff has put their time and effort into making this one of the most enjoyable events for our con-goers. This has been my first year as Con-chair. I’ve been staff with SheVaCon for about ten years in many different positions and have been an attendee before that. I’ve done my best to try to make SheVaCon even better than the years before. It’s been a tough year and I’ve devoted myself to making sure that SheVaCon continues to grow and evolve. This year has been one of growth for our convention. We’ve not only re-located to a bigger hotel but we’ve also tried to extend our hours of operation. We’ve tried to fit in more programming of various interests so that there are things for every type of sci-fi/fantasy fan. I know that this is not a one man show. Without the help of the SheVaCon staff there would be no convention, so I would like to thank those who have helped with the putting together of this year’s convention as well as those who came before that gave us things to expand upon. We know that without you the con-goer, SheVaCon would not exist. It’s your attendance and your feedback that helps us grow more and more each year. Rules & Weapons Policy Rules of Conduct •

Membership badges must be worn in all convention areas, and to all convention events. Each convention member is issued one badge. Badges may not be switched from person to person. If you lose a badge, a replacement can be purchased from registration for the price of a regular convention membership. You will be asked to leave any and all convention functions if your badge is not visible. All event program rooms have limited capacity as set by the Fire Marshal. Even though your badge is needed to get into all events, it does not guarantee you access to any event if it has reached it’s capacity. We do not clear rooms between events except for the Costume Contest. Most autograph signing’s are of a limited nature. Your badge does not guarantee autographs at any event. Smoking, food, and beverages are not allowed in the hotel function rooms. Food and drinks must stay in the designated areas, or in your hotel rooms. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the hotel except in the designated areas. There is signage posted. The legal drinking age in Virginia is 21. Any person under the age of 21 found drinking alcohol will have their convention membership rescinded Cameras, food, beverages, smoking, weapons, and large packages are prohibited in the Art Show. These items may be checked at the Art Show Staff area. If the item(s) is/are valuable, please leave it in your room or car. SheVaCon is not responsible for lost or forgotten items that are left in the Art Room. Please do NOT touch the art in the Art Show. Oils from the hands and fingers may cause damage to the art. However, we encourage people to bid on the artwork using the bid sheets. Art needs a good home too! Please limit rude, obnoxious, offensive behavior and language to areas where polite fans and hotel guests will not be offended. SheVaCon is not responsible for any lost, stolen, damaged property or for injuries sustained during the convention. Programmed events and guests are subject to change or are subject to cancellation without notice. Those who attend in costume, please remember that there are public nudity laws in Virginia, please wear appropriate clothing in public areas. There will be no “camping” in the halls or lobby. Please rent a room or you will be asked to leave the hotel. If in cases where the host hotel is full, there are several local hotels in the area for you to rent a room from. SheVaCon does not support the sale of illegally reproduced items. Sellers are responsible for verifying the legality of their merchandise according to local, state, and federal laws. Children 10 years of age and under must be accompanied by a parent at all times. We do not offer any childcare. So please be aware of your children at all times. We reserve the right to ask you to leave the convention and to refuse a refund of membership fees if any of the above rules are not strictly followed. Please adhere to the rules and a good time may be had by all.
Weapons Policy • • • • • •
The firing of projectile weapons is strictly forbidden. Use of weapons to threaten, annoy, or intimidate is strictly forbidden. Bladed weapons must be cased or sheathed at all times. There are no exceptions to this rule in the convention areas. The only time an unbound weapon is allowed is for certain times during the Costume Contest, for contestants only. (subject to approval) Unsheathed weapons will be confiscated and held at the convention Registration table until you surrender your membership. We do not wish to restrict replica weapons that are part of your costumes (swords, blasters, lightsabers, etc.). However, if you attend with a real-world replica weapon, such as an M-16, Uzi, or something similar... then our Staff folks might have an issue with that and will need to inspect the replica to ensure the safety of the other convention attendees. Basically, use common sense, and everything should be just fine.
Costume Contest Info The Costume Contest is on Saturday Evening at 8:00PM in the Theatre If you're interested in signing up for the Costume Contest, and showing off that spiffy costume and all of the hard work you've put into it, stop by Information located down the main hall near the Fan Group area, and fill out the form! You might just win a nifty trophy and certificate as recognition of your costuming skills! Sign-ups Start on Friday and run through early Saturday Afternoon.

Born in Sydney, Australia, Virginia Hey spent her childhood in both Australia and London, England. She was discovered at a bus stop and began a career as a fashion model in Australia and Europe. She appeared on the cover of several magazines and soon moved into acting where she starred in television and films in Australia and the UK. Hey got her first big break in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) as the Warrior Woman.
Born in Manhattan on April 20, 1939, Peter Soyer Beagle, son of Simon and Rebecca Soyer Beagle, was raised in the Bronx, New York. From an early age he was a voracious reader, and his parents encouraged him in his pursuits of the literary arts. As early as sixth grade, he proclaimed that he was going to be a writer, and during his years at the Bronx High School of Science (Class of ‘55), he was a frequent contributor to the school literary magazine. It was in this period that his work caught the attention of the fiction editor at Seventeen Magazine. In his senior year of high school, he entered a poem and a story into the 1955 Scholastic Writing Awards Contest, without realizing after his time at Stanford had ended, he kicked around the East Coast for a while, before deciding that his heart belonged with Enid in California, and so he and a friend undertook a cross-country motorscooter trip, which would later become the basis of I See By My Outfit. Once he had married Enid and moved in with her and her three children, he supported himself and his family as a freelance writer for years, even after the well-received publication of “The Last Unicorn”.
She was also one of the Bond girls in The Living Daylights (1987), and most recently played the multi award-nominated blue priestess Zhaan in “Farscape” (1999) (1999-2004). She left the show after three years because she wanted to grow her hair and eyebrows again (she was required to shave both for the role), and also for health reasons as the blue make-up took a toll on her well-being and caused her kidneys to bleed and set off a chain of health issues. Hey is a certified practitioner of natural therapies. She studied Naturopathy, Homeopathy and Herbal Medicine for one year in 1992, became certified in advanced Reiki in 1998 and Meditative healing for 2 years 1998-1999 before Farscape began in late 1999. She is interested in New Age spiritualism and teaches meditation across the USA.

In the 1970’s, Beagle increasingly produced screenplays, (he continues to write for the screen to this day) while also pursuing his avocation as a folk singer, delighting audiences with songs in English, Yiddish, French and German. A live album of his songs has been released, and he once played at The Palms in Davis, CA. According to him, “singing (and dishwashing) are the only other things I’ve done for money.” Between 1973 and 1985 he performed every weekend at the club L’Oustalou in Santa Cruz, California. In 1980, his marriage to Enid ended, and in the summer of 1985 he moved to Seattle, Washington for several years. I am informed that Beagle “is a regular on the university circuit where he gives readings, lectures, and concerts,” and I know that he appears at the occasional fantasy convention. (Check out the appearances page for current information.) He has conducted writing workshops at such institutions as The University of Washington and Clarion West. His works have been translated into at least 15 languages to date, and he continues to write wonderful, magical books, thank heavens.

Regarded as one of the top entertainment illustrators, Matt Busch has made a career out of tapping into every expressive art imaginable, surprising even his die-hard fans what he does next. In the early 90’s, Busch began his career in Hollywood, working in every aspect of the movie business, from concept design work on THE MATRIX, to storyboards for CON-AIR, to poster design for THE DEVIL’S OWN. Simultaneously, he began illustrating books, magazines, posters, comics, trading cards and toys for notable pop culture properties, including LORD OF THE RINGS, INDIANA JONES, THE CROW, HEROES, G.I. JOE, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, The HULK, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, RESERVOIR DOGS, BRUCE LEE, WITCHBLADE, ROBOCOP, The MUMMY, STARGATE SG-1, and STAR TREK. Mostly known for his work with the STAR WARS universe, Busch has written and illustrated dozens of STAR WARS books and magazines. He created the cover of TALES FROM THE EMPIRE, which became a New York Times Bestseller. Busch has also been involved with creating artwork for advertising, marketing, and licensed products for all three STAR WARS prequels. Due to last year’s 30th Anniversary of the saga, Busch produced 7 different STAR WARS posters that year alone! Busch also provided nearly 400 drawings and paintings for the critically acclaimed YOU CAN DRAW STAR WARS book from DK Publishing. Busch has also extended his own unique drawing and painting tutorials to video, with episodes at StarWars.com. Later, these episodes topped the charts on MySpace.com, with several videos going straight to Number One. Further, the first two exciting (and hilarious) seasons of episodes have been collected on to limited edition DVDs! A closet musician himself, Busch has also enjoyed producing art for major musical artists like ALICE COOPER, BEASTIE BOYS, BECK, BLACK SABBATH, CINDERELLA, FOOFIGHTERS, GARBAGE, KID ROCK, L.L. COOL J, BILLY JOEL, MEGADETH, MOTLEY CRUE, TED NUGENT, OZZY OSBOURNE, POISON, and JESSICA SIMPSON. The first hardcover collection of his work, “FANTASTIC VISIONS: The Art of Matt Busch” was Published by Avatar Press, which included an Introduction by POISON’s Rikki Rockett. SQP Publishing later released a follow-up hardcover collection titled “PUCKER: The Seductive Art of Matt Busch” which featured an Introduction by SYSTEM OF A DOWN’s John Dolmayan. Last year Hermes Press published the quintessential collection, titled “THE WORLDS OF MATT BUSCH.”

Spat Oktan
Master of Ceremonies & Special FX Makeup Master Spat Oktan was born in Long Island, NY on October 1. Spat is a costume, prop, and special F/X artist and actor who works on many independent, low budget, and fan-made films. His antics at Conventions worldwide have become the stuff of legend, and his website (spatcave.com) details his work, and his escapades. www.spatcave.com
Dr. Thomas Holtz, Jr. Special Guest
Dr. Thomas R. Holtz, Jr., is a dinosaur paleontologist specializing in the origin, evolution, adaptations, and paleobiology of carnivorous dinosaurs (especially Tyrannosaurus and its kin). He is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Recent works include several chapters in University of California Press’ The Dinosauria, Second Edition (the Bible of dinosaur studies.) In addition to his technical publications, Dr. Holtz has written several books for children (most recently Dinosaurs: The Most Up-To-Date Encyclopedia for Dinosaur Lovers of All Ages (Random House; see http://www. geol.umd.edu/~tholtz/dinoappendix for updates), and has been a consultant on numerous TV documentaries (including BBC/ Discovery Channel’s Walking with Dinosaurs and the History Channel’s Jurassic Fight Club) and museum exhibits. Dr. Holtz is the Faculty Director of the College Park ScholarsScience & Global Change Program (http://www.geol.umd.edu/ sgc), a residential honors programs for freshmen and sophomores interested in global change science. He lives in the Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C. with his wife, a trio of cats, and an Inland bearded dragon lizard named Dr. Emilio Lizardo.

Jim O’Rear has been involved in the entertainment industry for over twenty five years, beginning his career on tour as The Youngest Professional Magician with David Copperfield, Harry Blackstone Jr., and The Great Tomsoni and opening for acts like Cheap Trick and John Anderson. With his “magical” background and having been trained in New York at The American Academy Of Dramatic Arts, it was only natural that Jim move into the realm of film, television, and theatre where he has worked steadily as an actor, stuntman, and special make-up effects artist on such projects as Day Of The Dead, Star Trek 4, The Vampire Wars, Lethal Weapon 3, Creature Feature, Hayride Slaughter, Cop & ½, Psycho Beach Party, Evita, Little Shop Of Horrors, No Retreat No Surrender 3, Mortal Kombat: Conquest, and many more with actors including Martin Sheen, Burt Reynolds, Mel Gibson, Amanda Plummer, Maximillian Schell, Robert Englund, Jon Voight, Chris Sarandon, and others.
The husband & wife team of Daniel and Jillian Coglan are fulltime martial arts instructors, specializing in 16th century Samurai Art. When not teaching at their dojo, The Kojokan, the travel the United States performing and teaching the ancient ways of the most famous warriors in history.

Wanting to get some of his own ideas onto the screen, Jim successfully moved into the area of screenwriting. Although competition is tough, he has written and sold a number of horrorrelated screenplays, including The House Of Pain (in development with Robert “Freddy” Englund, Gunnar “Leatherface” Hansen, Tom “Friday The 13th” Savini, Bill “ChopTop” Moseley, and Debbie “Scream Queen” Rochon), Hayride Slaughter, Hayride Slaughter 2, The Deadly Obligation, Vampyre Tales, Wolfsbayne, The Deepening, and (currently playing on cable) Scream Farm. Jim also placed third for Best Screenplay in TSA’s screenwriting competition and was a finalist in the Fade In Screenplay contest and Writer’s Network competition. Jim’s horror writing has not stopped there. He has also contributed many articles to national publications, such as Scary Monsters Magazine, Scars Magazine, Haunted Attraction Magazine, Comics Interview, and Underground Entertainment, and has been recognized in Fangoria Magazine, Alternative Cinema, Fright Times, and Femme Fatale Magazine. Jim was also “immortalized” as a comic book character opposite Thor in an issue of MARVEL Comic’s “What The…?” and has appeared as himself (along with Ken Foree, Tom Savini, Debbie Rochon, Brinke Stevens, James Gunn, and more) in the fictional horror novel, BAD MOON RISING… the third installment of Jonathan Mayberry’s GHOST ROAD BLUES trilogy…. and in ZOMBIE: CSU. In addition, Jim has written a paranormal book about real hauntings in Tennessee for Schiffer Publishing titled TENNESSEE GHOSTS, available in stores now. Currently, Jim continues to work as an actor and stuntman on several films per year, recently cast opposite Andrew “Wishmaster” Divoff (Lost, Airforce One), Tom Savini (Grindhouse, From Dusk Til Dawn), and Jason Carter (Babylon 5, Angel) in The Dead Matter and playing Kane Hodder’s (Hatchet, Friday The 13th) brother in Old Habits Die Hard.

With a combined 35 years of experience, their show is a unique blend of history, combative skill, and humor, designed to educate and entertain audiences both large and small. Beyond their martial skills, the dynamic duo collaborated to write, direct, host, and star in a 12 episode TV series entitled, “The Way of The Samurai.” Daniel is also an author, with several martial arts articles published, and is currently working on his second full-length novel.

What do Star Wars, Dr. Who, dik-diks and tapeworms have in common? Jennifer Teeter, that’s what. Jennifer Teeter wrote her first song, “I Don’t Have to Pee,” at age thirteen. Since then, things have gone pretty down hill. Her songs are funny, nerdy, irreverent, and played on the ukulele. She performs around Atlanta and the Southeast. www.thesixtyone.com/jenniferteeter

Bambi has costumed since she was 3 years old apparently. There is a picture of her in her mother's hat and shoes with a scarf and on the back her mother documented a story which ends with her asking mom to tie the scarf, and then waving good by to mom, she is going shopping! This went onto designing evening dresses for her Barbies( out of pilfered 6 inch wide silk ribbon from her mom's sewing stash ), making her own sundress at age 10 (because her mother refused to make it for her, disagreeing with the "style") and then wearing it, making her own dance and Halloween and Mardi Gras costumes and then AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (angelic chorus inserted here) discovering scifi about age hhhhhmty. There are no pictures but her very first costume was a replica of Uhura's uniform, She has never looked back.
Jasmine showed up on the costuming scene in 2002, when one of her good friends introduced her to the art. Her first costume was that of an Imperial Officer from the original Star Wars trilogy. Her inspiration for the Imperial Officer uniform was Admiral Piett. With obtaining her first Star Wars costume, Jasmine soon became a member of the 501st Legion and has been a member for nearly nine years. She has since donned a TIE Pilot costume to add to her Imperial wardrobe. In addition, Jasmine is also working on a submission for the Rebel Legion.

In addition, Jasmine is also an avid costumer of pop culture. Her costume collection includes pieces from famous films (Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek, Disney's Pocahontas), comics (X-Men, Justice League), and video games (Metal Gear Solid, Left 4 Dead 2). Jasmine's favorite character to portray is Tia Dalma from Pirates of the Caribbean, as she most likely will be among friends who perform other characters from the trilogy. While juggling multiple identities may seem a bit cumbersome, Jasmine is always on a quest for more interesting characters. Future endeavors include She Hulk, Jade (Mortal Kombat), and Anastasia Dualla (Battlestar Galactica). Jasmine considers costuming to be homage to her childhood interests. However, some of her most enjoyable experiences have come from the community work that she has been able to do while in character. Through costuming, Jasmine has been able to use her hobby to give back to the community by attending various costume events for charity. Such charities include Make-a-Wish, Give Kids the World, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Autism Speaks, local libraries, and other community organizations. Another cherished benefit of costuming includes the extended family that Jasmine has made through her hobby. "I've truly been blessed to meet some remarkable people through this hobby. In the few short weeks since he dropped out of civilization a bizarre plague has swept the planet. The recently dead are rising as feeding machines that feast on the warm flesh of the living. A bite from one of the creatures is ultimately fatal as one ghoul becomes two, becomes eight, becomes sixteen, until the human species is nearly extinct. The Reign of the Dead series…(now a trilogy), has enjoyed sustained success. It was one of the first books available in the genre…or as Max Brooks said, “Len Barnhart was writing about zombies before it was the cool thing to do.” It also rates as Max’s personal favorite in the genre. Len lives in the northern neck of the Shenandoah Valley and has written three novels. A forth is due in 2012 called: The Eighth Day. The final installment in the ‘Reign’ series (Tribulation) is due in 2014.

In 2003 I self-published “Discarded Faces,” my first novel, under the name Steve Cross. It’s science fiction. In 2010 a revised version of “Discarded Faces” was published as an ebook by Double Dragon Ebooks, under the name Betty Cross. I don’t go by the name Steve any more. Betty more accurately reflects my gender of choice. I have two novel-length projects in the works: a sequel to “Discarded Faces,” and a fantasy novel.

Betty Cross I am a science-fiction and fantasy writer. In April 2010 I left my day job in the computer field to write full-time. I live in a small condo full of books in Cary NC. I earned a BA in History from Davidson College in Davidson, NC and an MA in Journalism from the Henry Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia at Athens, GA. However, like many refugees from the liberal arts, I moved on to computers. Without word processing, I might never have published anything.
When I’m not writing, I like to go shopping (clothes, jewelry, books), visit with my nephews and nieces, surf the Internet, celebrate Jewish religious holidays, and watch the big screen. I’ve trained myself to live without a daily dose of television.
Paul Dellinger Paul Dellinger sold his first SF story in 1962,
while in the service. He later adapted it into a play performed in 1970 at the Barter Theatre. He has published twenty or so more short stories over the years for magazines and anthologies, coauthored a non-fiction (believe it or not) book on UFOs, written and performed in a twice-aweek radio adventure series for a year, and written uncounted articles for newspapers and popular culture publications, many of the latter on old-time western (aka “alternate reality”) movies. He and his wife, Maxine, live in Wytheville, Va. They have two grown children.

David Forbes
www.davidforbes.net David Forbes is the author of the epic fantasy series THE OSSERIAN SAGA, published by HarperCollins, which began with THE AMBER WIZARD in 2006, followed by sequels THE W ORDS OF MAKING and THE COMMANDING STONE. The goal of the books was to write a fantasy series chronicling the rise of monotheism in a polytheistic world and how religious belief can both unite different social and ethnic groups, as well as be used as a weapon to conquer others. As with most early writing goals, this one didn’t survive much beyond the first draft, and the tattered remnants that remained were drastically changed from the original concepts. Which is maybe a little too much info about this particular sausage making, but Forbes is nothing if not scrupulously honest and direct about his writing, except of course where such scrupulousness might affect him adversely, and then all bets are off. However, the original goals did begin to peek back in to varied degrees in the second and third volumes, so all was not lost. The Saga also includes a large and varied cast of characters, some unique world building, and, of course, lots of fighting, magic, and an assortment of gargantuan action set pieces where lots of things are destroyed in spectacular ways in order to satisfy the author’s lifelong fascination with explosions, mayhem, and destruction. The third volume was published in the fall of 2009, after which Forbes switched from large scale fantasy to young adult and urban fantasy novels. Two YA novels are currently being shopped around by his agent. EVERWHEN is about a war between factions of angels arguing over God’s plan for the world and the fifteen-year-old boy caught in the crossfire because he has something both sides want. THE SAPPHIRE EYE concerns a teenage girl who gets caught in the machinations of an immortal empress out to enslave mankind. The teenager has to fend off attacks from demons and undead soldiers while keeping up her grades in high school and coming to terms with the discovery that the guy of her dreams is actually a witch. Forbes also just handed over to his agent his first urban fantasy novel, THE RUTHLESS DEAD, about a half-angel security consultant who becomes the target of a Dutch wizard and Greek vampire who plan to crack open an alternate dimension known as the Abyss and release unspeakable horrors not only upon this world but all of the Celestial realms as well, including the one we think of as Heaven. He is a member of the USA Table Tennis Hall of Fame (Google it!), and once beat someone while using an ice cube as a racket.
Cheralyn Lambeth Cheralyn Lambeth likes to refer to herself as a “fan who went pro,” crediting her work in the film/TV/entertainment industry to her early love of Star Wars. After a brief stint in the Air Force Reserve, she went on to study drama and Radio/Television/ Motion Pictures at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Shortly after graduation, Cheralyn relocated to New York to study at The Juilliard School and earned her first 15 minutes of fame performing Off-Broadway with John Leguizamo in Mambo Mouth. She then moved to Minneapolis to create Muppet costumes for Sesame Street Live (as well as a large purple bunny for the film The Net) and returned to New York a year later to work with Jim Henson Productions on the TV series Dinosaurs! and the film The Muppet Christmas Carol. After her time at Henson, Cheralyn worked with Paramount Production Services, creating costumes and props for Paramount properties such as the Star Trek Earth Tour, Titanic: The Movie on Tour, and Star Trek: The Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton. Some of her other credits include work (both behind and in front of the camera) on The Patriot, the National Park Service film “Manassas: End of Innocence” directed by Star Wars sound specialist Ben Burtt. She was also a principal character in the History Channel docudrama Isaac’s Storm, which premiered in the fall of 2004 and can still occasionally be seen on THC. Her most recent work is on the film Blood Done Sign My Name with Rick Schroeder. On the fan side of things, Cheralyn is proud to be an active and long-time member of the Fighting 501st Legion of Stormtroopers. She also serves as the voice of the Federation starship Montana in the acclaimed Star Trek fan audio series Star Trek: The Continuing Mission.

Artist Guests Kristy “Illusioner” Gilbert www.theillusioner.com Friend, lover .. wait, this isn’t poetry. Illy (rhymes with silly) was born Kristy Gilbert some few years ago and always thought she was a writer. She wrote feverishly through the 80’s during high school. She was an avid fan of Science Fiction in general and action TV shows in particular. Yes, she watched He-Man, the A-Team, GI Joe, Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica because she liked them, not just to appease the little brothers! After high school, she went on to become a travel agent, a wife, a mother, an ex-wife and finally discovered the magic of Digital Art in July of 2004. She’d tried Poser the year before but gave up because it didn’t make sense. A good friend took the time to explain the basics and that was the start. Illusioner never looked back.

Beck is an artist, illustrator, cartoonist, author and super cool sketch card artist. She’s written and illustrated a children’s book and recently began drawing the art for a new web comic “Sweeten Village”. She has been a freelance artist for over 10 years and has worked with super awesome companies like: Lucasfilm, Topps, Breygent, 5finity, CultStuff, a variety of rubber stamping companies and private collectors of all things cute and cuddly. She hosts a twice weekly artcast on Ustream where she draws commissions, sketch cards and sexy pinups (with the occasional kitten and lots of glitter!). Beck also thinks wiener dogs are awesome and cats wish they could be that cool. She also collects children’s books, stuffed animals, freckles and pet hair. And one day, Beck will have a pet Wampa of her very own!

The Art Show will be closed during the Live Auction on Sunday, and re-open immediately after the auction to allow all winning bidders to purchase and pick up their won item(s). How Do I Bid? Taped near each artwork is a piece of paper. This is the bid sheet. It is usually located below or beside the artwork that it is associated with. The bid sheet lists the Artist, Title of the piece, the minimum bid for the piece, and a place for you to write your bid amount and badge number. Why is that line highlighted? Saturday evening, all bid sheets will be marked with a yellow line (highlighted). This highlighted line will indicate the last bid on the piece at the close of the Art Show on Saturday. Additional bids may be made after the highlight mark has been made on Sunday. So please feel free to continue bidding on that special piece your have your heart set on! What items will go to Auction? Any artwork or items in the Art Show that have two (2) or more bids will go to the Live Auction on Sunday. If you are the only person to have bid on the piece by the close of the Art Show on Sunday before the Live Auction, you are the winner of that piece with the bid amount listed. You will be able to purchase your item(s) after the Live Auction on Sunday during the designated pick-up time for all other winning bids. If a piece is not bid on, it will not go to Auction. So if you want it, Bid on it! "Bid Watch" sheets will be available in the Art Show for you to write down the pieces that you've bid on to help you keep track, and also make it easier when picking up those items you've won.
No Artwork may be sold until after the Live Auction on Sunday. No exceptions. How does the Live Auction work? There will only be one live auction/sale. As noted above, any piece with two (2) or more bids will go to auction. All pieces going to auction will begin with the highest bid listed on the bid sheet. All art must be paid for and picked up immediately following the auction. This includes pieces that had a single bid, and did not go to the live auction. Any Artwork not picked up by 4:00PM on Sunday will go back to the Artist. How do I purchase my won item(s)? This year the process is a bit different... • • • •

After the Live Auction is over, both sets of doors of the Art room will open. One door will be for "Receipt Write-up" and one for "Delivery" At the "Write-up" door, tell the staff which pieces you're there to purchase or hand over the 'Bid Watch' sheet, or the 'Winning Bid' slip(s) from the Live auction. The Staff will write up the receipt of your purchase(s), and the total amount due. Take this receipt to the Registration area to complete your purchase. Cash, Check, and Credit Card (+3% charge fee) are accepted. Your receipt will then have a special "paid" mark on it once your transaction is complete Take the "paid" receipt back to the Art room to the "Delivery" doors, and hand the receipt to the Staff. Once payment is verified, the Artwork is ready to go to it's new home.

The 501st Legion of Imperial Stormtroopers is a Star Wars fan club celebrating the movies using costumes and props, particularly those of the Imperial characters and the other villains of the Star Wars saga. The Legion’s members construct their own movie-quality costumes and props and wear them to charity and community events, parades, science fiction conventions and to other occasions where their portrayal of the characters might add fun, assist fund-raising, or thrill the children and other spectators present.
Though the term ‘marine’ has it’s roots in describing a soldier who fought from ships at sea, in the modern era it has become synonymous with those elite forces of soldiers who are always ready to fight, regardless of their nation’s readiness for war, and who are capable of operating far from their home soil.

The Rebel Legion The Rebel Legion is an international Star Wars costuming organization created by, of and for people interested in recreating costumes from the Star Wars mythos - Jedi, Rebel Pilots, Troopers, Princesses and even Wookiees ... we’ve got them all. We are the Good Guys! Besides creating and wearing our “Good Guy” costumes, our worldwide membership often chooses to give back to their communities through costumed volunteer activities. Members of the Rebel Legion march in parades, help raise funds for charity, appear at conventions, visit children’s hospitals, support educational and science centers, as well as a wide variety of other events. We can usually be found posing for pictures and providing “meet-and-greets” for event guests, escorting VIPs, and especially interacting with kids by bringing their action figures to life. Much like the Rebellion in the Star Wars movies, an alliance of rebel costumers first appeared in 2000; responding to the 501st Stormtrooper Legion (i.e. the “Bad Guy” costumes) and choosing instead to celebrate the heroes of the Star Wars saga. Although founded in the United States, the Legion has grown to become the international organization it is today, encompassing nations worldwide and becoming the premier Rebel costuming group in the Star Wars community.

Mandalorian Mercs The Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club is the world’s premier custom Mandalorian costume organization. With 20 chapters in 7 countries around the world, members of Mercs take part in a wide range of activites, including local and international conventions, charity events, and fan gatherings. Founded in March 2007, the Mercs grew rapidly from a core of 5 members to now over 200 across the globe. The goal of Mandalorian Mercs is to provide a nexus for Mandalorian costumers, giving them a collective identity and representation within the Star Wars costuming community. We are passionate about the armor we wear, and use it not only to promote the Star Wars universe, but also to explore the evolution and implementation of the Mandalorian costume as it appeared in film and print. Though Boba Fett was the ‘first’ Mandalorian, he certainly wasn’t the only one, and as the world of Star Wars grows and defines itself, so too does the Mandalorian costume and culture. We are unique among Star Wars fan groups in that our chosen allows for your imagination to be let loose through costuming. Mandalorian Mercs also maintains its own charity fund called the “Help a Verd’ika Fund”. Each year Mercs members collect money through charity events and celebrity raffles, and then use these funds to provide presents for children who normally would not receive gifts during Christmas. River City Fanboys is a forum dedicated to fans of various elements of geek culture (e.g. sci-fi, fantasy, comics, video games, costuming, etc.) in the Richmond and Greater Richmond areas. With over 1000 topics and over 100 members, River City Fanboys is truly Richmond, Virginia’s premier fanboy (and girl) forum.
SG-9 (Stargate) We’re a Stargate fan group headquartered in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia; though our membership encompasses the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. It’s members share an avid interest in science fiction (Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Highlander, Robotech, etc in addition to SG-1 and Atlantis) along with costuming and prop building. We’re affiliated with SciFiHero.net (General Science Fiction) as well as to bring fans of various franchises just a little closer together. In terms of the Stargate universe, SG-9 is a dual purpose team based at the Beta Site. Like the Alpha Site before it, the Beta Site was originally established as a possible refuge should the Earth be overrun by it’s offworld enemies. Later on, as other offworld bases were established, the Beta Site began to concentrate on the training of offworld personnel. SG-9 serves as a group of veteran trainers in charge of modling new recruits into efficient SG personnel. Additionally, SG-9 is classiied as a ‘troubleshooting’ team, tasked with taking on and taking out specific threats or dealing with smaller scale situations that may arise. SG-9’s concentration so far has been on thwarting the efforts of the Lucian Alliance throughout the galaxy. To aid the team in this mission, as well as provide vital protection for the Beta Site, the IOA has seen fit to permanently assign the newly commissioned Battlecruiser Consitution and the 901st Space Fighter Squadron to the Beta Site. All in all, this makes the Beta Site a powerful fortification of Earth’s rising prominence in galactic affairs.

COMARR COMARR is a medieval recreation group based in Waynesboro Virginina. We are interested in re-creating the middle ages from 850-1650 as they should have been not as they actually were. We recreate medieval combat, archery, arts and sciences, and other parts of the Middle Ages.
I.K.V. Devastator In 2008, the Devastator was refounded by Karhel epetai-Trekkan to serve as an example of the Klingon way of life to the rest of the galaxy. Having concluded it’s second full year of continued service, the IKV Devastator is setting forth once again to conquer Star Trek fandom and bring glory to the Empire and entertainment to Trek fans everywhere. Currently we have members all throughout Virginia and North Carolina.
The USS Bonaventure, NCC-102-A, is the Triad, North Carolina chapter of STARFLEET International, the International Star Trek Fan Association. Located in the north central Piedmont area of North Carolina, the Bonaventure is a Star Trek Fan Group that is dedicated to promoting the ideals of the Trek universe and offering our members a variety of ways to explore that universe with other fans. The USS Bonaventure is a meeting chapter that gathers on every second Saturday of the month within the Triad area of North Carolina. While most of our members are from the Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem area, we also have members in other areas of the country and we enjoy a lively correspondence with members and “Friends of the Bonny-V” throughout Trek and Sci-Fi Fandom. Even though we host meetings to “Talk Trek and SciFi” and socialize, we also have regular group trips to attractions, museums, conventions and other events of fan interest. In addition to our social activities, the Bonaventure has a tradition of supporting various local charities, such as Urban Ministries and the Red Cross, and we encourage our members to get involved with their communities.
CPRI
The Center for Paranormal Investigation Established May 15th, 2000. The Center for Paranormal Research and Investigation** is a non-profit organization based
outside of Richmond,VA. They conduct investigations into the paranormal in a non-metaphysical manner. One of their main goals is to seek out allegedly “haunted locations”* and to assist those who are experiencing problems with the paranormal. CPRI then looks for authentic evidence of the paranormal and try to determine if the location is haunted*. They are seeking genuine evidence and are careful about the presentation of this evidence... insuring that it is legitimate, researched and analyzed before being presented to the general public. They use strict SCIENTIFIC methods to obtain TANGIBLE evidence - Evidence that leaves no doubt about its origin, cause and effect. Evidence that will be reproducible under controlled testing conditions. (Example - If a ghost is residing in a home and is able to be clearly picked up by videotape, then it should be able to be clearly picked up upon testing replication.) They are skeptics and not debunkers - skeptic means to question and debunk means to expose while ridiculing.

They are committed to proposing new theories regarding the paranormal that will be reproducible within a laboratory environment. The credibility of the group is maintained above all else as they do not work with psychics or conduct investigations using metaphysical methods. They are not “Ghost Busters”, but when a case does prove to be genuine, assistance through other channels may be provided at the location owner’s request. In addition, they do not claim to be experts in the paranormal, as no experts exist when it comes to the supernatural, no matter what anyone may claim or who may claim to be one. They are instead working to present an image of competent researchers who are collecting the most authentic empirical evidence possible. Investigations conducted under the auspices of CPRI are always held to the standards of the group and are conducted with integrity, honesty and with discretion. CPRI is also different from other ghost hunting organizations because we are a tangible society, not just an internet mailing list. They are a real group with active members and investigators. CPRI members come from a variety of professional backgrounds including law enforcement, military, education, psychology, medicine, engineering and computer science that provide critical skills that can be applied to investigations. They also seek to educate the public about paranormal phenomena by sharing our research findings through our website, monthly newsletter and presentations at professional meetings and conferences. CPRI seeks to engage the public in a variety of ways and on a variety of fronts. CPRI is a member of the TAPS family of paranormal research organizations. The organization has had cases and members showcased on Syfy’s Ghosthunters and the Discovery Channel’s “A Haunting”. The director, Bobbie Atristain has also published a book on paranormal research entitled “Haunted People, Haunted Minds”.
ESP Eastern States Paranormal All of the members of E.S.P. are dedicated to the research and study of the paranormal. Our group p r o m i s e s c o m p l e t e professionalism along with c o m p l e t e compassion and sensitivity to all investigations. When a case involves children our intention is to investigate and get you answers to your problems A S A P. E.S.P. is dedicated to debunking and/or proving the presence of any paranormal activity you may be experiencing. We have investigated many private homes and have had the pleasure of the Soldiers and Sailors war memorial theater in Beckley W.Va. And also investigated the St. Albans sanatorium in Radford Va. so many times we have lost count. E.S.P. has also given a large amount of our time to the preservation and restoration of the old St. Albans buildings. It is something very near and dear to out hearts.

Wizengamot Quidditch The Wizengamot is the official Quidditch team of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Quidditch originated as a magical sport, played by wizards in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Muggle Quidditch is played on (non-flying) broomsticks. Active since Spring 2008, the Wizengamot is the first established team in Virginia. There are over 30 active team members. The Wizengamot have played in matches all over the state, and in the Intercollegiate Quidditch Association’s Quidditch World Cup for two years running. The VCU Wizengamot is also a member of the VQL, the Virginia Quidditch League, which organizes all matches in Virginia.

Writers Programming A Real Thrill Ride: We have seen ads describing movies this way. In what sense is it true, and how can fiction be written to feel like a thrill ride? Is there a common psychology to roller coasters and stories? (D. Forbes, N. Brauer, L. Wisoker, D. Bartell, P. Prellwitz) Breaking the Myth - Writing Has No Rules: Since we are an educational convention this would be a panel about how the rules of writing that are learned in school are not always concrete. Prellwitz) Iron Writer: Four Writers, with five guests per writer will be given a theme and then work with the guests to create a story. Each person in the group will spend a few minutes writing, and then pass it on to the next person. Carolina Ghostbusters The Proton Pack Is Not a Toy: Ghostbusters Prop-building - Being a Ghostbuster is far more demanding and in-depth than most people realize. In the panel, we’ll take a look at the ins and outs of everything you need to be a Ghostbuster. We’ll answer questions and give advice and pointers about the biggest and most in-depth prop build out there, the Proton Pack. We’ll provide links to equipment plans and talk shop on what you need to know that fan-made plans don’t tell you, a run-down on creating on-site effects for your ghost trap, and discussion about how to handle questions in the field like, “What is that hose on your uniform for?” In addition, we’ll cover the basics like proper uniforms, patches, and certain pieces of equipment along with low-cost places to find them. Don’t Worry, I Found the Car: Building your own Ectomobile - Ecto-1 is the most recognizable movie vehicle with the least amount of screen time in cinema history. Want to build your own but don’t know where to start? Want to find that elusive ’59 Cadillac? (We’ve got some bad news on that search.) We’ll talk about the parts of the car, both inside and out, and where to find them or how to fabricate them, where to pick up the proper emergency and warning lights and equipment and the legality of such, and where to find the “growler” siren.

Rebel Legion Meet the Rebel Legion: We Are the Heroes – Join the Fight - Have you ever dreamt of piloting your X-Wing down the Death Star trench and making that “One in a Million” shot? Wondered, who really shot first? Why you should “let the wookiee win”? Even what is Blue Milk? Those questions can be answered by official costuming members of the Rebel Legion. Delving into the costumes of the Rebel Legion: Thinking of costuming as one of your favorite Star Wars good guys, albeit, Luke, Han, Obi Wan, or even Chewie. Or do you want to go more generic like the Rebel Troopers, Pilots or Jedi. Learn about what it takes to get yourself setup in one of these costumes. From research & resources, to acquiring the necessary materials and tools required. We can show you why the local hardware store or fabric outlet is a haven for costumers. Meet some of the Rebel Legion as they show you their build progress and tools, and then be able to see the end result of all their hard work in the finished costume.

Devastator Creating Klingon (and other) prosthetics on a budget: Join the Command Staff of the IKV Devastator as we discuss and demonstrate methods for creating Klingon headpieces and other prosthetics on a tight budget. We will demonstrate our methods by creating headpieces for a few participants at random. Becoming Klingon: The Command Staff of the IKV Devastator will review all the steps in becoming a Klingon, from costuming and props to understanding Klingon culture and ceremonies.
River City Fanboys Room 1138: Late 1970's early 80's cinema created a unique environment for classic SciFi films. Where are it's roots and how do Star Wars, Alien, The Empire Strikes Back and Blade Runner all relate to one another. Room 1138 Redux: Issues with the Star Wars prequels and how the prequels might have been written differently to eliminate plot holes or coincidence using historical scripts and thrown away ideas from Lucas himself.

Where can you find what you need? Join members of regional Star Trek fan groups like the USS Bonaventure who have been where you are today for some hints and help completing your Trek ensemble. Steampunk Translation Intro to Steampunk: Steampunk reaches new levels of popularity each year, only limited by the boundaries of imagination and creativity. Set within the Victorian Era and employing the elegance of gadgetry, gears and the etherpowered mechanical, Steampunk visionaries transport classic character archetypes and even popular Sci Fi and Fantasty icons with amazing and compelling results. Panelists discuss what makes a costume, prop, or other visualization "Steampunk" and share their experiences in this clockwork genre.
Archetypes and Icons: Steampunk visionaries draw from a bevy of resources when creating their own versions of classic archetypes. Additionally, there has grown a trend to "steampunk" favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy icons. From the X-Men to Star Wars to Aliens, classic characters are being transported into a Steampunk world with amazing and compelling results. Panelists discuss their interpretations of how to create a steampunk look from either approach and share their experiences in bringing both character typifications and popular movie icons into the world of Steampunk.

Eastern States Paranormal (ESP) Things associated with a haunting and the different types of hauntings: We have found in our time in the paranormal field that there are some common denominators when investigating alleged haunted properties. Learn the seven things we have found that can intensify the activity at an allegedly haunted site as we discuss the difference in an intelligent and residual haunting. Conducting a successful EVP session and useful hints for still pictures: There are so many things to consider to insure your EVP session is not contaminated. You need to know about "tagging" your recorder. How weather conditions can interfere with or enhance an EVP session. Learn when and where to conduct your session to who should or should not attend and which equipment can be used in each situation. And how to take pictures during an investigation. Not only can the weather can affect your pictures, but if you are not careful you and/or your investigators can have negative effects on your pictures as well.

Meet CPRI - Have you ever seen a ghost? Do you have a qustion about something in the paranormal field? Ever wonder what kind of folks chase after spirits? Come out and meet the members of the Center for Paranormal Research and Investigation (CPRI). CPRI is one of Virginia's oldest and most well established paranormal research organizations and a long standing members of the the TAPS network. Their members are at the forfront of the paranormal research community having helped pioneer new theories and research methods. CPRI members and cases have been spotlighted on episodes of Syfy Channel's "Ghosthunters" as well as the Discovery Channel series "A Haunting".
