hile many students enjoyed one of their final days of summer vacation, incoming freshmen and other new students arrived on campus by 9 a.m. Thursday morning for Freshmen Success. The annual program, led by Student Council in conjunction with Head of School Tony Farrell and Dean Reynolds Marquette, put on a variety of activities in an effort to acclimate the freshmen to the Stuart Hall community. “The Freshmen Success program assists in making the freshmen feel welcome here at Stuart Hall,” Student Council moderator Austin Emerson said. “The first activity of the day is a breakfast where all the freshmen get to meet each other and meet Student Council members who are running the event,” Sophomore Class Representative Dennis O’Donnell said. “The breakfast gave me a chance to see my whole class and meet classmates,” incoming fresh-

men Mattheus Tellini said. Educational Innovation Coordinator Lori Saltveit gave a presentation on how to set up their laptops for school. Students also were taught how to use and organize their Google Drive accounts. Saltveit, Marquette and Farrell also touched on expectations for digital conduct. They explained the ramifications of cheating using the internet, cyberbullying and obtaining sexual content on their computers. The incoming students were given a chance to socialize midday as well. Student Council prepared a barbeque in the courtyard for the freshmen and encouraged them to continue meeting their new classmates. Students also had a chance to hear President Ann Marie Krejcarek talk about this year’s theme for Convent & Stuart Hall, “We Belong to Each Other,” and the role it can play in the community of Stuart Hall High School. “I think this year’s theme emphasizes how we as a community need to work together,” Andrew Dolan, who is joining the sophomore class, said. “I think that’s really important when it comes to learning in the classroom and being engaged in a community.”

tudents returning to campus will see some of the changes that were implemented over the summer in the chemistry classroom, amongst the faculty and on the schedule. Improvements made in the chemistry classroom were centered around bettering safety. “We replaced the residential type hood over the existing range with a Type 1 Grease Hood,” Jim Gherardi of D Kelly Construction, the general contractor for the project, said. “If there’s a fire, there is an ansul system which extinguishes the fire, and the exhaust will exhaust flame or smoke straight out.” Aside from physical campus changes and improvements, this year’s faculty looks different than last year. Latin to both IB Programme candidates and college prep students. Susan Wilson is joining the English department, as well. Replacing former Director of Admissions Shuja Khan is Greg Lobe, who will assume Kahn’s old office as the new Admissions Associate. The daily schedule has again been tweaked, eliminating the unpopular Tuesday schedule where students took three classes before a late lunch. Chapel has been moved to Monday mornings after the first two periods. Chapel’s previous time, Friday’s before lunch, is now home to a meetings period, similar to the ColLab period on Tuesdays. D Period precedes C Period, and H Period precedes G Period on Wednesdays and Thursdays to prevent students with early dismissals due to sports

from repeatedly missing the same class on consecutive weeks. “I used to get hungry when there were three classes before lunch on Tuesdays,” Christian Young ’20 said. “So now it will be easier to focus throughout the day.” Student Council will be taking a greater role in assemblies and community gatherings, including religious observances such as Day of the Dead and Sacred Heart feast days. “It is an exciting opportunity for Student Council to get to lead these assemblies and chapels,” Student Body President Owen Fahy ’18 said. “This new responsibility should get the entire Student Council involved in decision-making and planning, and it will hopefully be engaging for the community to experience student-led programming.”

First dance of the year scheduled for Friday Carnival looks to impress, but faces logistical challenges

n keeping with the tradition of a dance after the first week of school, Student Council has tentatively planned Carnival for Friday, Aug. 25 on the Pine and Octavia campus. The date and time are being reviewed as four sports teams from both Convent and Stuart Hall High School are competing that afternoon, making it challenging for those players to make it to the dance at its currently scheduled time. “Our goal with the first dance of the year is to create an experience that is fun for all students so that they continue to come

to events in the future,” Student Body President Owen Fahy ’18 said. “That being said, we would like for all students to have the opportunity to attend.” Traditionally, freshmen have made up the majority of Carnival’s attendance. Student Council plans to raise upperclassmen numbers to both enhance a sense of community between grades and provide funding for future endeavors. The Student Council wishes the event will encourage participation from everyone, as they will be offering a variety of activities outside dancing to add to the carnival theme. Plans include games such as corn hole, ring toss and

Spike Ball among others throughout the Courtyard. “Carnival is definitely a dance, but we also plan to have carnival games and other ways for students who don’t like to dance, to still have a good time,” Fahy said. Drinks and popcorn will be provided, and Phoenix Aquino-Thomas ’18 is scheduled to DJ. “I’m really excited to DJ,” said Aquino-Thomas. “It’s exciting because I get to contribute to my communityby doing something that I’m passionate about.” Spirit Director Angel Padilla ’18 will be emceeing the event with Phoenix. “We hope to have more than 75 percent participation this year, and to really boost school spirit,” Fahy said. Tickets will be $5 and can be purchased at the door, with no pre-order option available for this event. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the event will conclude at 8 p.m.
