GOING THE DISTANCE

WHEN IT COMES TO LONG RANGE DISTANCE CASTING MIKE DAGNALL IS THE MAN TO TURN TO. When faced with larger lakes in the UK and abroad there is no bigger advantage than being able to fish effectively at long range. It’s not just a case of being capable of casting a lead huge distances you need to be able to bait up accurately and present a rig at range. Like most things the key to long range fishing is practice, practice, practice, but if you don’t have the right tools, or casting technique to get the job done, you won’t reach your potential. Tackle it correctly Tackle needs to be up to the job in hand and all of our Tribal Intensity rods and Big Pit reels will cast extremely long distances when combined with a good quality 10lb(0.30mm) or 12 lbs (0.33mm) main line and a 25lb fluorocarbon shock leader. Get the basics right To get that all important extra distance you need to compress the rod during the casting movement. The length of line between the rod tip and lead should be approximately half the length of the rod, this will help with timing the release during the cast. A good set-up and casting technique is also very important for long range fishing. One of the crucial, and often overlooked things when distance casting, is foot position and stance. Stand with your feet together facing the target and then step forward with your leading leg (left leg for right hand casters). Then lift the toes of your front foot off the ground. This automatically transfers your body weight onto your back leg which means you are now in the perfect position to maximise all of your body power when casting. Now, with the clutch tightened down, hold the reel with your smallest finger behind the reel stem and three fingers in front of it, using your

index finger to hold the line. Place your other hand onto the butt of the rod and grip it firmly. Lift and extend your arms high above your head, and position the rod parallel with the ground behind you. Look forward and upwards, at about 45 degrees into the sky, above where you want the lead to land. Now you have the perfect set-up to achieve maximum distance. The casting sequence The casting sequence starts with your left hand (right hand casters) pulling down hard on the butt of the rod as your right hand drives forwards, an up, to maximise the arc of the rod as it passes directly over your head, this creates tip speed, which increases lead speed and results in more distance. At the same time you transfer your weight from your back foot to your front foot. With practice the sequence of hand and body movement becomes seamless, fluid and very powerful. As the lead passes over your head you release the line and launch the lead at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. With practice you’ll soon get the feeling of when the right time is right to release the lead. Too soon and the lead will fly too high, too late and it will fly too low. After the lead has been released, point your rod at the lead during its flight, this will reduce friction on the line as it passes through the guides. Practice makes perfect By following the above technique and with plenty of practice you will soon realise your maximum casting potential, which in turn will put more fish on the back. Shimano organise casting academies around the UK each year to help you with all of your casting needs. These are completely free and you can use any Shimano rod and reel combo you want. Check out the Shimano Tribal Facebook site for more details and updates.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT The key to long range fishing is practice, practice, practice, but is you don’t have the right tools, or casting technique to get the job done, you won’t reach your potential.

...FISHING FOR DREAMS

ALIJN DANAU REVEALS WHY HE CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF ‘FISHING FOR DREAMS’... On almost all waters there are fish, which for one reason or another, are more popular than the others. Their popularity may be due to the large size of the fish, but in recent times the visual look of the fish has also become increasingly important. A stunning golden Common, a perfectly formed linear Mirror, a large Leather or even a Ghosty, with more fish being photographed and uploaded to social media sites, fishing for a unique looking fish is becoming more popular. Admittedly, not everyone fishes for target fish, some prefer to cast into the unknown and take what comes, but I like to fish for a specific fish.

Of course it is not always possible to fish exclusively for a certain fish, the water may be unknown, or the right swims may not be available, but as a general rule I like to set myself the challenge. Put in the groundwork When I am on a mission, I put in a lot of groundwork to make the task more likely to succeed. I try to collect as much information as possible and put together as many pieces of the puzzle as possible about the fish in question. The catch history, the places where they have been caught before, their food preference, the period of the year they have been caught in the past, their behaviour on the surface etc. Each piece of information is

13

THE CHALLENGE OF FISHING The challenge of fishing for a known target fish is becoming more popular and it’s not always the biggest fish that gets the attention.

collected and fitted into the total picture. Social media and the internet are your friends, but don’t ignore anglers who have fished the water, or those currently fishing there. A polite request for information is often worth the effort. Apart from that, I always keep an open mind, because all of the information can sometimes be misleading, or push you in a certain direction. It is a matter of properly analysing your collected information, adding your own experiences and knowledge and then using your skills. In fact, your brain is your best weapon. After all, the human brain is larger and more sophisticated than that of the carp. And yet that carp will win more often than you! That makes it just as exciting and fascinating to find a solution that ultimately leads to the capture.

Impossible to describe It is sometimes said that the journey is more beautiful than the goal. There is certainly a core of truth in this. However, after a long and difficult journey, often interspersed with false hope and disappointment, when the fish of your dreams disappears into the mesh of your net, the blissful feeling can be quite overwhelming. It’s certainly almost impossible to describe. The relief, the sense of achievement, the natural high of excitement, it makes all of the effort worthwhile. In fact it gives the fish even more kudos, especially if it has been hard to catch. The moment when you peel back the mesh to reveal your fish is quite remarkable. Other anglers may also have been planning to catch the fish and may have been working equally as hard as you, but at the moment of capture it is ‘your’ fish and nobody can deny you the prize. Later, when the fish has been inspected, admired, weighed, photographed and safely returned, you can sit back and enjoy a drink of celebration, and reflect on how beautiful carp fishing can be. Benefit of a boat Most of my target fishing is practiced using a boat. This can be a great advantage, especially on clear waters with good visibility, where the bottom of the lake can be seen. Using a boat enables me to search for feeding areas and find clear spots in weed beds. I can even make my own clear spots, or clear weed from swims to make them easier to fish. It also makes finding out the bottom composition of a swim much easier - gavel, clay, soft silt can easily be identified. And then there is the advantage of introducing bait very accurately, and on clear waters placing my rigs and seeing that they are laying correctly.

Gear guide When dropping baits, or actually fishing from a boat, it is better to use short rods. My personal choice is the Tribal TX2 2.75lb in the 10’ length. This is manoeuvrable in the small confines of a boat, making bait placement easier, but powerful enough to play fish correctly, even in weedy situations. Using a boat also enables me to fish a long way from the bank. For better bite registration Power Pro braid is my first choice reel line. It is tough, has great knot strength and is thinner than mono, it also gives better feedback when placing baits as you can feel snags, gravel and silt through the direct contact. Fish of your dreams If you have never set about trying to target a specific fish, you should give it a try. Of course you need access to the right types of water, usually ones with a low density of fish and of course you need to select your target. It’s not easy, effort and patience are two qualities that will serve you well, but I can tell you this. When your target slips over the drawstring of the net, the elation will be like never before, and for a few brief moments the fish of your dreams will be yours!

14

SMALL WATER SURPRISE SHORT SESSIONS ON SMALL WATERS CAN PRODUCE SURPRISING RESULTS IF YOU PUT THE EFFORT IN...

Small waters offer some of the most exciting and rewarding carp fishing you can get. Using a short session approach, often with minimal tackle for easy mobility, it is quite surprising just how large the fish can be. You don’t need masses of tackle and long range casting isn’t important. Stealth, watercraft and a flexible, mobile approach is much more useful. Within a short distance of your home there will almost certainly be a small water that holds carp and it is quite possible that it has been overlooked by most carp anglers who only fish larger, well known waters. It could be a small lake, a canal or a stretch of river, if you do some homework you are bound to find some suitable waters. The perfect time Summer is the perfect time to hunt out these waters, especially on hot days and evenings when the carp will often sun themselves near the surface and feed in the shallows. A bucket of floating pellets, some visible bait like sweet corn, a catapult and polarising sunglasses are all that you need. When searching for new venues, or visiting a known venue for the first time, give yourself a few hours to walk the bank and see if you can spot some carp. One of best tactics is to go to the end of the water where the wind is blowing from and fire some floating pellets onto the surface. These will drift across the water and can often attract fish up to the surface to feed. Working on a ‘little and often’ approach a line of pellets covering a wide area can soon be established. If you can view the water from

a height, using either a high bank or a bank side tree, even better, and you will also be able to spot carp better if the sun is behind you. Another useful tactic is to feed sweet corn into the margins as you walk around the water. Providing the water is relatively clear and the margins shallow you will be able to see the bait on the bottom. Leave the areas undisturbed for an hour or so and then quietly return to the swims to see if the bait is still there. If the bait has gone, feed a bit more bait and watch the area carefully. If carp are in the area they will often drift back over the bait and start feeding. Light and mobile Once you have found a water to fish, you can use your ‘normal’ tactics and tackle, or even better, you can use lighter tackle and adopt a mobile approach. Shorter 10 foot rods from the Tribal TX range, fitted with a small Baitrunner reel make a great combination and the Tribal luggage range has a selection of luggage designed for mobility. You don’t need a shelter, just a rod and reel, net, unhooking mat and some bait. Using a feed, fish and move approach you can cover lots of areas quickly. If the water is small, feed a few different swims before you start, especially margins with lots of cover and then fish them in rotation. If you don’t get a quick bite, feed a bit more bait and move to another pre-baited swim. It is often possible to return to a swim that has produced nothing before and get a bite within minutes of introducing a hookbait. So there you have it... get searching out local small waters, adopt a mobile approach and you might be catching carp from waters you never thought possible.

GET MOBILE Get searching out local small waters, adopt a mobile approach and you might be catching carp from waters you never thought possible.

MARK YOUR TERRITORY USING A MARKER FLOAT AND FEEDING WITH A SPOD CAN MAKE A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE TO YOUR CATCH RATE...

17

FIND THEM - FEED THEM If you usually fish blind, try using a Marker float to find the most likely feeding spots in a swim and when you do locate them, bait them up with a Spod.

The use of Marker floats and baiting with Spods/Spombs is one of the most popular and effective ways of locating spots and baiting quickly and accurately when fishing at range. When combined with dedicated Spod/Marker rods, a big pit style reel this method is effortless and hugely rewarding. Map out you water A Marker float helps you map out your swim and is an incredible edge if you have the time to map out your whole lake. A couple of hours work with a Marker float can result in you catching throughout the season, when others are struggling. All you have to do when casting a Marker float out is sink it on a tight line so you keep the tension in the line. Release a foot of line from the spool at a time until the float appears and this gives you the depth. To establish what the bottom of the lake is like, reel down the float to a tight line and gently pull the lead (and float) across the lake bed. You’ll be able to feel if the bottom is hard clay, gravel or soft silt, and weed is easily felt as resistance increases. Accuracy matters To get the best from this method pinpoint accuracy is essential, so get yourself some distance sticks so you can measure the distance accurately and make sure your line is clipped up to the right distance. A quick tip is to write down how many wraps each rod is at during a session as it’s very easy to forgot while admiring how close you can cast your Spod to the Marker float. Accuracy is paramount because casting a loaded Spod is not like casting your rig out. If you misplace a rig you can reel in and re-cast the rig without any problems. With

a Spod, if your cast goes wayward you will be baiting up the wrong area which dramatically reduces the prospects of you catching a fish. Start slowly If you are new to this method start at a comfortable distance like 40-50 yards and gradually increase the range as your accuracy improves. In principle Spodding to a Marker float is easy, but as you practice you will learn to deal with different wind conditions, deeper venues and the adjustments you will need to make with the casting distance of your Spod.

As braid has zero stretch it really is the best reel line for both your Spod and Marker setup. It is recommended to keep the braid wet to avoid wind knots while casting. A gripper type lead for the Marker rod also provides brilliant indication when feature finding. When you have found your spot, make a mental note of any landmarks or tree’s on the skyline that can be seen at night. Although you may not see them do it, the most successful anglers that use this method will continue to Spod at regular intervals throughout the hours of darkness and without making a note of a visual marker this wouldn’t be possible.

Braid is best When trying to locate spots with a Marker float, or using a Spod, you need the right line to give you a clear indication of the makeup of the lake bed and the required casting range for the Spod.

So if you usually fish blind, try using a Marker float to find the most likely feeding spots in a swim and when you do locate them, bait them up with a Spod. The increased accuracy can make a real difference between catching and blanking!

As braid has zero stretch it really is the best reel line for both your Spod and Marker set up.

FIND YOUR PERFECT REEL

FIND YOUR PERFECT REEL WHEN IT COMES TO CARP REELS THERE ARE TWO CHOICES - BIG PIT AND BAITRUNNER. WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Carp fishing and the methods used are constantly evolving. A few years ago you had to look no further than Baitrunner reels for the ultimate carp reel. SHIMANO Baitrunners, with their revolutionary freespool mechanism transformed carp fishing. They arrived at about the same time as two other major advances the hair rig and bolt rig - and the combination of all three was almost as revolutionary as the boilie itself. With the reel set in freespool mode, the carp would pick up the bait, get pricked by the exposed hook and bolt. The bolt rig lead set the hook, the reel screamed as the fish bolted and all the angler had to do was pick up, engage the drag and play the fish. It’s an approach that has stood the test of time. Today Baitrunner reels are available in Big Pit, Classic (similar to the original Aero Baitrunners which started the revolution), Compact and Heavy Duty. For large waters and long range casting choose the Big Pits, for medium sized waters, or for fishing at ranges up to 100 metres, go for a Classic, for small waters look at the smaller 6000 sized Classics and the Compact models. For extreme fishing check out the Heavy Duty models. Whichever Baitrunner you choose you can be sure that you are getting the very best technology, quality and over 30 years of development experience. Big Pit reels started to become popular as anglers moved on to larger waters, or where the carp stayed at range on medium sized waters. The term ‘Big Pit’ was originated by SHIMANO in the 90’s to differentiate large ‘carp’ reels from their surf casting cousins. In effect the technology was the same and used a combination of a large spool with excellent line lay (Aero Wrap) to achieve maximum casting distance. A more recent development has been the introduction of slower line oscillation to wrap the line onto the spool in closer coils, which reduces friction on the cast, and the AR-C spool with its advanced front lip profile. The introduction of Super Slow 10 and more recently Super Slow 5 oscillation has given SHIMANO Big Pit reels a significant advantage over other manufacturers. Other advancements include Parallel Body design and Hi-speed drags which can be set from ‘free’ to maximum drag in less than one turn of the drag knob. All SHIMANO Big Pit reels now feature a fashionable ‘stealth’ finish. SHIMANO carp reels are available in a wide range of prices to suit all anglers budgets. The features of each model can be seen and compared on page 43 enabling you to make an informed choice. Rest assured, whichever SHIMANO reel you choose, you will be selecting and using the very best.

Weight The weight indicates the weight of the reel in grams.

Line Capacity The line capacity of the spool is shown in diameter (mm) and length (metres).

Gear Ratio The gear ratio is the amount of turns the spool rotor makes for one turn of the handle.

Spare Spool Many reels come with spare spools. The spare spool column indicates how many spare spools.

X-SHIP creates a STRONG Gearing foundation to cope with extreme pressure and maximises winding power transmission from the handle to the rotor.

HAGANE Body provides highly Durable Protection for internal components and offers outstanding body rigidity resulting in better performance of moving components.

WATER RESISTANT PROTECTION X PROTECT is a three-lipped rubber seal system which is designed to keep low pressure water out of the reel. The grease between the second and third lips resists high pressure water. Besides the rubber seals, a labyrinth construction is added in order to make it water proof for a much longer time. All of this does not effect the smooth rotor rotation or line roller performance. X PROTECT seals the roller clutch (which is the optimal location for protection) and line roller to prevent water intrusion. This advanced protection technology increases the durability of the reel and gives a high level protection in even the toughest conditions. This insures a good reel performance for a long time, without effecting the smoothness of the reel.

22

LONG RANGE CASTING TECHNOLOGY OFFERING THE ULTIMATE IN DISTANCE CASTING PERFORMANCE On larger waters, where casting distance is essential, using the correct reel is almost as important as using the correct rod. SHIMANO Big Pit reels, with Slow and Super Slow Oscillation and the Parallel Body design add noticeable casting distance compared to other reels of the same size.

PARALLEL BODY Parallel Body is a new feature that is designed to improve dynamic line flow from the reel to the first guide. On many reels the spool is aligned slightly upwards towards the rod blank, but with Parallel Body it is at exactly 90° to the blank. The result is less line slap the blank as it travels towards the first guide during casting.

BIG PIT TECHNOLOGY

HI-SPEED DRAG Hi-speed drag is SHIMANO’s fastest drag system and can change the drag setting from free-spool mode to fighting mode with only a very small turn to the knob located on the front of the spool.

SPOOL REDUCERS SHIMANO Spool Reducers instantly reduce the line capacity of the spool. Supplied with Big Pit reels, there are three sizes. 3500 - 0.20mm = 200m 6000 - 0.30mm = 200m 10000 - 0.40mm = 300m

OSCILLATION Slower spool oscillation reduces the speed the line travels up and down the spool on the cast. This results less friction as line leaves the spool and reduced drag on the lead, which improves casting distance and accuracy. SHIMANO STANDARD Oscillation (up to 20 wraps per cycle) outperforms the industry standard. SHIMANO SLOW Oscillation (up to 40 wraps per cycle) exceeds almost anything else ever seen. Super Slow Oscillation systems - SUPER SLOW 5 (55 wraps per cycle) and SUPER SLOW 10 (105 wraps per cycle) the ultimate line lay.

BAITRUNNER REEL RANGE

BAITRUNNER

BAITRUNNER LONGCAST THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS BAITRUNNER Longcast reels are designed for long range fishing and combine a Big Pit sized spool with the convenience of a rear freespool lever. Available in two different models, both Longcast XT-B models come in two sizes - the BB (Big) version is the larger size with a full sized Big Pit spool and the MB (Medium) has a more compact spool and body. The smaller MB size is very popular with carp anglers who fish a wide variety of waters as it offers excellent casting performance, combined with a more compact profile and lighter weight. All BAITRUNNER Longcast models feature 2-speed Aero Wrap Slow Oscillation for excellent line lay and Hagane Gear and X-Ship for powerful winding performance. Due to the line capacity of the large capacity AR-C spools, line reducers are provided with all models to enable you to fill your spools efficiently depending on the line diameter you are using.

LONGCAST

THE LEGEND CONTINUES

34

THE CLASSICS For years BAITRUNNER reels have been the first choice for millions of carp anglers. The freespool facility is convenient to use and totally reliable, changing from an almost frictionless spool rotation to a pre-set drag setting at the flick of the lever or a slight rotation of the handle. The 'Classics' are medium sized reels that are perfect for all but the longest range carp fishing. Within the range the X-Aero version has a slightly larger diameter spool to bridge the gap between standard 10000 size and Longcast BAITRUNNER reels. RB models all come with balanced double handles popularised by SHIMANO BAITRUNNER reels many years ago.

REEL GLOSSARY

40

SPECIFICATION INFO

SHIMANO GEARING TECHNOLOGIES

Gear Ratio - The Gear Ratio of the reel indicates the speed of the reel. This is showed in a number which includes the amount of turns of the rotor (360 degrees) in one full rotation of the handle. Example: In a reel with a gear ratio of 6.0:1 the rotor rotates exactly 6 times in one handle rotation. A reel with a high gear ratio (HG or XG) is faster, which is an advantage when you need a fast retrieve speed. A reel with a low gear ratio is slower and because of that more powerful. Most carp and BigPit reels have a fairly low gear ratio, which makes them very powerful. This is useful for retrieving heavy leads and fighting big fish.

HAGANE Gear - The HAGANE Drive Gear is produced by SHIMANO’s cold forging technology, without the need for additional machining. This results in gearing parts which retain the characteristics of the pure material, keeping it as strong as possible.

Maximum Drag Force - The maximum drag force is a number in kg, which shows the maximum tension of the drag. For example: when the maximum drag force of a reel is 6kg, there is 6 kilogram or more pressure needed before the drag starts to give line when it is fully closed. Spool Capacity - The spool capacity indicates how much line can be spooled on the reel spool. This is often communicated in line diameter (mm) – meters and line strength (lb) – yards. Line Retrieve per Crank - The ‘Line retrieve per crank / handle turn’ specification explains how much line is retrieved in one full crank with the reel handle. This is measured in centimetres. This indicates the retrieving speed of the reel. A fast retrieving reel is often wanted by carp anglers, because they can retrieve their lead and bait very fast. This reduces the chance of getting stuck and loosing tackle. Generally: the bigger the spool size, the more line retrieved per crank. The same goes for the gear ratio: the faster the gearing (a higher gear ratio) means more line retrieved per crank when compared to a reel with a lower gearing ratio. MATERIAL INFO XT-7 - XT-7 is the original SHIMANO composite reel material, used on reel bodies and spools. XT-7 is reliable, robust and lightweight. Ci4+ - SHIMANO’s Ci4+ is a composite (composite = two or more raw materials used) material with very special characteristics. It is actually 250% stronger than the original Ci4 material, Ci4+ is also over one-anda-half times stronger than SHIMANO’s normal XT-7 graphite and is over 20% lighter as well. Since Ci4+ does not contain any metal, so it is impervious to rust. Ci4+ parts are lighter and stronger than any other composite material SHIMANO is using in their products. Magnesium - Magnesium is used by SHIMANO for a select number of ultra high quality reels where weight saving is essential. The use of magnesium offers a weight reduction up to 10% compared to aluminium. Cold Forged Aluminium - Cold Forging means forging aluminium at a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius. Very heavy pressure is used to forge the aluminium into shape.

X-SHIP - X-SHIP stands for Extra Smooth & High Power. It is a precision gearing system which enables smooth yet strong reeling. By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with SHIMANO (S) A-RB bearings and integrating a bigger drive gear with improved position, SHIMANO have increased the gearing efficiency and power of reels with the X-SHIP feature. It results in a reel with ultra-light handle rotation which is very powerful at the same time. SHIMANO BALL-BEARING TECHNOLOGIES A-RB - SHIMANO Stainless Steel Anti-Rust Bearings have undergone a special heat treatment resulting in high metal strength and long lasting corrosion resistance. (S) A-RB - Shielded Stainless Steel Anti-Rust Bearings. These bearings have undergone a special heat treatment resulting in high metal strength. Shielded A-RB bearings use either a rubber shield or stainless steel shield (depending on bearing size) for the ultimate in corrosion resistance and contaminant protection against sand, salt or dust. SHIMANO SPOOL TECHNOLOGIES AR-C Spool - AR-C is a spool-lip design technology by SHIMANO. Through tens of thousands of casting tests and computer simulations, it has been determined that the AR-C spool lip design provides longer casting distances than a standard spool lip design, while preventing backlashes and wind knots. It also allows the line to flow off the spool in smaller loops during the cast which means less line slap on the first guide. Long Stroke Spool - Increases the casting distance by 4% - 17%. This feature can be found on the new Stradic FL (figures are based on the FL and it’s predecessor, the Stradic FK). Spool Reducers - Spool reducers are plastic caps which are included with some reels (usually reels with a big spool capacity). They can be clicked on the spool, in order to downsize the spool capacity. Line Clip - A line clip is a small clip, located just underneath the bottom edge of the line-winding part of the spool.

the hook, simply turn the handle or flip the BAITRUNNER lever to the 'BAITRUNNER Off' position, and the fight is on with the regular drag setting. SHIMANO BODY TECHNOLOGIES HAGANE Body - A reel with HAGANE Body has a body made out of precision machined cold-forged aluminium or magnesium. The creates stiffness and impact resistance, whilst at the same time eliminating flexing of the body. The HAGANE Body is highly rigid and protects gear rotation performance from heavy loads and shocks. Parallel Body - SHIMANO’s Parallel Body technology means the rod and reel alignment is perfectly parallel. The axle and spool are parallel to the rod and because of that, the ‘line slap’ between your spool and the first guide is minimized. This will make the line come off the spool more easily when casting. SHIMANO ROTOR TECHNOLOGIES X Aero Wrap - X Aero Wrap is a worm gear oscillation system with a specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds for the AR-C spool design. The one speed oscillation system provides a line-lay with one speed (the same speed upwards and downwards). The two-speed oscillation system (the spool moves upward quickly and downwards slowly) lays the line onto the spool in a precise criss-cross pattern that reduces line-toline friction when casting. Varispeed - Varispeed takes care of a consistent spool speed, which is achieved by altering the speed of the oscillation cam. OSCILLATION SYSTEMS The oscillation of the reel is the speed of the spool going up and down during the winding of the reel. The slower the line oscillation, more wraps of line per cycle are possible. With a slow oscillation reel, every wrap of line is placed just above the previous wrap of line. The slower the oscillation of the reel, the more parallel the wraps at the spool are. Because of the parallel wraps, there is less friction when the line comes off the spool during the cast. This makes longer, easier and more precise casting possible. You will notice the smoothness and control that a slow oscillation reel offers right away. SHIMANO Standard Oscillation - Is up to 20 wraps per cycle. This is slow and exceeds almost anything else available from other manufacturers.

SHIMANO DRAG TECHNOLOGIES

SHIMANO Slow Oscillation - Is up to 20-49 wraps per cycle. This is incredibly slow and exceeds almost anything else ever seen.

Water Proof Drag - The Water Proof Drag contains rubber gaskets which are placed to protect the drag system. It seals the drag against intrusion of the elements such as water and dust.

SHIMANO Super Slow 5 - Is a minimum of 50 wraps per cycle. This makes (almost) perfect parallel spooling possible and gives a huge improvement in casting distance and precision.

Instant Drag - SHIMANO Instant Drag allows a quick adjustment of the front drag knob to take the reel from a current drag setting to free spool in just half a turn (and vice-versa).

SHIMANO Super Slow 10 - Is a minimum of 100 wraps per cycle. This produces perfect parallel line spooling and the best casting distance, control and precision possible.

BAITRUNNER System (lever) - The BAITRUNNER Lever provides a secondary drag system which allows an angler to feed out line in tension-controlled freespool with the bail closed. To engage the main drag and set

CARP & SPECIMEN RODS

CARP & SPECIMEN

TRIBAL TX. FROM ULTRA LONG TO ULTRA COOL. IT’S YOUR CHOICE.

Within the Tribal rod range there is something for every carp angler. Whether you’re looking to cast huge distances with ease, mid-range with pinpoint accuracy or at close range with stealth, you’ll find a Tribal TX rod to suit your style and budget. There are also designated Spod and Marker rods that complement the TX range by using the same understated cosmetics, so for all the anglers who like the same look for all of their hardware, the TX range has it all. The high performance TX Ultra and TX9 use SHIMANO’s exclusive Spiral X carbon technology, feature unique Ci4+ reel seats and have outstanding casting performance and fish-playing qualities.

At the other end of the price scale is the amazing value TX2 which looks every bit as good as rods costing twice the price and performs like them too. New for this year are cork handle TX2 ‘SPC’ models for an understated retro look and feel. The TX7, TX5 and TX4 series combine amazing performance with a mid-priced cost. This was proven at the Carp Fanatic Casting Cup where Cristian Mihalcea won the long range title with a cast of 226 metres using a TX7! Within the Tribal range there are also application rods designed for stalking, floater fishing and travelling.

43

44

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE WHICH CARP ROD IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

There are a wide choice of models in the Tribal range, from the high performance TX9, which has outstanding casting performance to match even custom built models costing considerably more, to the fantastic value TX2 which looks every bit as good as rods costing twice the price and performs like them too. You will also see that within the Tribal TX rod range there are ‘Intensity’ models in all price categories. These are designed for distance casting and have special tapers to maximise distance, especially when using larger leads or PVA bags. Whichever range you choose, from the TX9 to the TX2, you can be sure that the minimal graphics, slim handles, high quality DPS reel seats and top of the range guides will look every bit as good on the bank as the rod performs when casting and fish-playing. The TX9 and TX2 also come with full cork handle options. Tribal TX - Time To Unlock your potential.

ROD TEST CURVES INTENSITY PERFORMANCE All Tribal TX models feature Intensity actions in addition to the normal range of test curves. Intensity models have been developed for maximum casting performance and use a range of different carbons blends (depending on price) and advanced tapers, to harness the power of the cast. The handles are also longer (70cm) than standard rods of the same length, to help generate more tip speed during the cast. Intensity rods have been designed for maximum casting performance using a 3oz to 5oz lead, with the optimum weight being 4.5oz. The Intensity actions of the different TX rod ranges vary depending on model type. Below is a guide to the casting and fish-playing performance you can expect from each model rated out of 5 for each category. TX ULTRA The TX Ultra is built using SHIMANO’s very best carbon technology. This produces the ultimate in casting rod performance combined with exception fish-playing performance. Casting performance - 5 Fish-playing - 5 TX 9 The TX 9 is potentially a world beater when it comes to distance performance. Sightly more power than the Ultra whilst retaining a very acceptable fish-playing action. Casting performance - 5 Fish-playing - 4 TX 7 TX 7 holds a casting world record for an ‘off-the-shelf’ carp rod. Immensely powerful, this powerhouse of a rod does sacrifice a bit of playing action to get the immense distance. Casting performance - 5 Fish-playing - 3 TX 5 TX 5 is a fantastic all round casting rod which combines distance potential with a pleasing fish-playing action. Casting performance - 3 Fish-playing - 4 TX 4 TX 4 is an animal and rated by some as the best distance/cost ratio available. The playing action isn’t the most sophisticated, but if you want to hit the horizon, this could be the model for you. Casting performance - 5 Fish-playing - 2 TX 2 TX 2 offers outstanding value for money and is SHIMANO’s largest selling carp rod. The Intensity version delivers great distance and has a surprisingly pleasing playing action. For the money you won’t get better. Casting performance - 4 Fish-playing - 3

SHIMANO Tribal TX carp rods come in all popular lengths and strengths. There are 9 and 10 foot models for specialist use, as well as Spod and Marker rods. However the most popular casting lengths are 12 and 13 feet. The lighter test curves, in 12 foot lengths, are more suitable for small and medium waters where long range casting and large lead sizes is not generally required. However, if you are looking for extra casting distance, or use large leads and PVA bags, the ‘Intensity’ versions should be your first consideration. The figures in the table are for a Tribal TX 2 rod and are actual distances measured by Mike Dagnall (one of the UK’s longest casters), using a Big Pit 14000 reel with a 50lb shockleader, tied to 0.30mm (10lb) Aero Carp mono and no rig. You can see from the results how the test curve rating (and length) relates to the maximum performance for each given lead weight, with the ‘sweet spot’ for maximum distance being between 3oz to 4oz.

ROD FEATURES TX ULTRA AND TX9 RODS MAKE USE OF EXCLUSIVE CARBON TECHNOLOGY TO ACHIEVE LIGHTER, STRONGER, MORE RESPONSIVE RODS.

EXCLUSIVE HIGH QUALITY CARBON TECHNOLOGY

Outer Layer SHIMANO infinity carbon tape

Middle Layer Longitudinal carbon fibre sheet

Inner Layer SHIMANO infinity carbon tape

The exclusive carbon technologies used in SHIMANO carp rods are Spiral X, Hi-Power X, HPC carbon. All of these technologies improve casting performance, fish-playing response and increase strength, without increasing weight.

Outer Layer SHIMANO infinity carbon tape

SPIRAL X construction consists of three layers. A blank made of vertical fibers, an inner layer, and an outer layer both comprised of carbon tape that tightly winds the blank diagonally in opposite directions. By using this carbon tape in place of a conventional horizontal fibre sheet, Spiral X achieves enhanced torsional rigidity without adding extra weight. This in turn facilitates instant power transmission for precise casting and fighting fish.

HI-POWER X construction consits of two layers. The blank’s outermost layer is diagonally wrapped with carbon tape, which forms an array of ‘X’ shapes. The width of the tape, its winding angle and the part of the rod being wrapped are fine-tuned according to the action required. This process increases overall strength and added twist resistance. Hi-Power X construction delivers sharp and crisp rod control when casting and fish-playing.

Base Layer Longitudinal carbon fibre sheet

SHIMANO HIGH PRESSURE CARBON is a process which creates stronger, more responsive blanks. Pressure is applied to the blank surface during curing (heating) which evenly distributes the resin through the carbon fibre matrix. The result is a much stronger, more consistent performance and improved response.

ROD TECHNOLOGY REEL SEATS & HANDLES SHIMANO carp rod reel seats are designed and selected to perform to the maximum efficiency, whilst retaining an aesthetically pleasing profile. Handles come in varying styles and include abbreviated EVA, slim shrink tube, Winn Gripp and traditional cork (TX-2) options.

Ci4+ REEL SEAT Ultra lightweight custom designed reel seat. Available on the TX-Ultra and TX-9 models.

FUJI REEL SEAT Recognised as a market leader, Fuji DPS reel seats are used on the TX-7 and TX-5 models.

SHIMANO REEL SEAT The highly attractive SHIMANO woven carbon reel seat is used on the TX-4 with a plain version used on the TX-2.

GUIDES The use of quality guides on a carp rod is very important for reducing line friction when casting and preventing tangles. SHIMANO carp rods feature specialist Fuji, Kigan or Seaguide guides. The use of 50mm but rings on longer casting rods is widespread and anti-tangle tip guides and a common feature throughout the range. FUJI Fuji ‘K’ Guides with SIC linings are used on the TX-Ulta models. (12ft 2.75lb & 12ft 3.00lb)

ROD SPECIFICATION TABLE EXPLANATION PRODUCT CODE The product code is used by all SHIMANO dealers to identify the model.

KIGAN 3D Kigan 3D guides are lightweight, strong and have zirconia linings. They can be found on the TX-Ultra (12ft INT & 13ft INT), TX-9 and TX-7 models.

TRIBAL CARP LUGGAGE

BASED AROUND THE ORGANISED COMPACT DESIGN PRINCIPLE, THERE’S A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING FROM INSIDE TO OUT. SHIMANO’s Organised Compact Design system was one of the first modular tackle management luggage systems. Originally based around tackle cases fitting perfectly into larger outer carryalls, the system has now eveloved into a complete inside to out system. The Tribal luggage range now comprises Trench outer bags, Sync inner bags and a Trench Barrow which is designed to work perfectly with the all Tribal luggage. Use it your way The same original principles still apply. Load up your smaller items of tackle into Sync cases and then select what you need for each session. Simply load what you need into the Trench outer bags and

you are ready to go. Of course if you want to take everything for a long session, then load up the Trench 2 Wheel Barrow and benefit from the easy to move, Anti-Gravity design. All Trench items now feature the Tri-Cam premium 600D outer shell with a contrasting 210D lining material in a complementary olive green colour.

CARP LUGGAGE

59

60

CARP LUGGAGE

Tricam is a unique, carp specific camo design, developed on a new, hard wearing 600 Denier outer material and 210 Denier lining. Introduced specifically for the Trench Gear and Sync Gear luggage range.

HD Zippers can handle the most extreme abuse to ensure SHIMANO luggage lives up to the expectations of the most demanding anglers. HD Zippers have been thoroughly tested for strength and easy of use.

The Organised Compact Design system allows the angler to choose from numerous specialised accessory cases that fit, jigsaw-like into one of the many compatible carryalls. This gives the option to change them around for specific venues or the length of time fishing.

Power Stitching is widely used throughout the SHIMANO luggage range. This involves double stitched seams which produce increased strength at all the major stress areas ensuring longevity and reducing the chance of failure.

The Organised Compact Design has now introduced new options for conecting external bags! Webbing loops have been incorporated down the front of most main bags for attaching smaller pouches whilst elastic loops can be found on top of many bags, ideal for holding bite alarms on sticks. Webbing Straps can also be found on larger bags, for attaching food bags and bivvy tables.

The Aero Quiver system is simply based around an adjustable strap that components can be clipped onto. Like the existing Aero Quiver strap, the new Aero Quiver Advance strap has an improved mesh padding for extra comfort and allows up to 10 different products to be attached, offering countless variations.
