WHY BUY SHIMANO LINE? The main reason, just like buying our rods and reels, is quality and reliability. We don’t label our products as something they are not, we label them as products that do exactly what they say on the packet, and they perform every single time, as you would expect with Shimano quality. Our lines have built up their reputations from anglers worldwide, who all say the same thing ‘they don’t let us down.’ So rather than blinding anglers with technical information which can be confusing, we simply continue to manufacture them to the best of our abilities. Quality and reliability are two key points to consider when choosing a line and all of the lines in this brochure possess those key components. 3
SPOOLING UP - TOP TIPS
PRO STAFF
TOP TIPS SPOOLING UP GUIDE.... There are a huge variety of ways to spool up your reel correctly with new mono, but there’s a couple of key ways that we feel simplify the job and guarantee the line will rest perfectly on the spool, eliminating any problem of line twist whilst doing so. We recommend you spool up with the packaging spool spinning around its central point. This can be done by inserting a pencil through the centre of the spool and getting a friend to hold it, or by placing the spool in water and letting it spin whilst line is wound onto the reel. This takes the line off the spool in exactly the same way as it was put on at the factory. Certainly with monos like Technium and Technium Invisitec, or indeed Aero Fluorocarbon, this is what we recommend. After spooling you may notice that the line forms loose coils when not under tension. This is caused by slight memory in the line due to storage on the packaging spool. A great tip to remove these coils, or twist that you feel may still be present, is to walk the lines out with absolutely nothing on the end. The amount of line you ‘walk-out’ depends on the distances you’ll be wanting to cast. It’s then a case of reeling in the line under slight tension (a damp cloth between your fingers is a good option). This process not only beds the line down on the spool, but will push any coils or twist out as you load the line onto your spool. 4
WHICH KNOT TO USE... PERFECTION KNOT This particular loop knot is strong and reliable, which makes it the perfect knot for loop to loop connection of two lines, especially when connecting hook lengths to main line.
ALBRIGHT KNOT One of the most popular knots for connecting reel line to a much thicker shock leader. Formed into a small, neat knot, the Albright is extremely strong yet creates minimum resistance when casting.
SURGEON KNOT This is the perfect knot for connecting backing line on the spool to fresh line onto the reel. This small yet reliable knot sits perfectly on the spool without hindering the line lay of fresh reel line.
NON-SLIP KNOT Perfect for connecting reel main line to a swivel link for feeder and waggler work. The Non-slip knot is perfect for situations like this as its extremely robust when put under pressure on the cast.
PALOMAR KNOT The Palomar knot is one of the commonly known knots, as it has many uses, ideal for connecting snap swivel links, quick change feeder beads to main line, this particular knot is extremely reliable. 5
LINE EXPLAINED
LINE EXPLAINED... MONO Shimano’s range of monofilament line has been designed to the highest standard. Durability, strength and reliability are key factors and vary depending on the type of use the line is designed for. Regardless of the diameter, our mono lines have many key properties such as superb knot strength, abrasion resistance, fast sinking, and low memory. These characteristics are indicated on the product pages in this brochure.
FLUOROCARBON Fluorocarbon line is one of the most popular lines on the market for all styles of fishing, because it’s almost invisible to the fish. This is especially important on clear water venues where you are targeting spooky fish that have seen it all before. Even when targeting match size carp, using a fluorocarbon hook length can make a huge difference on the amount and size of fish you catch.
TAPERED Tapered lines are a great way of reducing resistance when casting at extreme distance, especially when surf fishing. The thicker, stronger end of the line absorbs the pressure of the cast, whilst the thinner main part of the line reduces friction whilst the lead is in the air. 6
PRO STAFF
TOP TIPS HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR LINE... PR
FOR PREDATOR FISHING Many anglers turn to braid for their first choice spinning line, but mono is still an important option for certain situations. When good abrasion resistance is required Technium is the ideal choice. This tough mono also has low stretch keeping you in contact with your lure at all times. Fluorocarbon line is also great for spinning. Its sinking properties are three times faster than a traditional mono line and it is also stiffer. Use it when fishing with crankbaits, especially deep running and sinking crankbaits at depths of more than three metres. In this situation it’s really important that your line sinks. The crankbait will sink to the working depth more quickly and stay on that depth. Braided line will float and drag the lure off its working depth. Fluorocarbon is ideal for leaders as well. For making dropshot rigs or end-tackle when casting or vertical fishing for zander or perch there is nothing to compare to it. As with all mono lines be sure to wet your knot a little before pulling tight to ensure the knot is correctly tightened. 7
CHOOSING YOUR LINE
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR LINE...
CA
FOR CARP FISHING With so many different carp angling situations, you have to consider the vital requirements for your own angling. Shimano produce a line for every situation you are ever likely to come across, so if the lake is crystal clear and line concealment is key, then the Aero Fluorocarbon is perfect. If you’re going to fish at long range then the Technium range of lines are ideal thanks to their low stretch, which not only improves casting distance but bite detection too. If it’s out and out strength you require then something like the Tribal Carp in 15lb will extract fish from most heavily weeded areas, plus those super snaggy bays where the carp love to hide. Finally Invisitec has qualities from all the lines mentioned above, without being specifically labelled as being solely brilliant at one thing. It casts well, it’s amazingly at home in clear water, it sinks superbly for a monofilament, plus it’s extremely robust and tough. 8

FOR MATCH FISHING For match fishing choosing the correct line for a specific use is vital to ensure you are fishing with maximum effectiveness. On Commercial fisheries, and also natural waters such as lakes and rivers, Technium Invisitec, Exage and Aero Super Match are perfect choices. They are strong and abrasion resistant, yet at the same time they sink very quickly which aids bait presentation and bite indication, regardless whether you are fishing the waggler or feeder. The most commonly used diameters for the above purposes are 0.18mm up to 0.25mm, depending on the size and amount of fish you are targeting. For hook lengths and pole rigs, Shimano Aspire Silk Shock is one of the most popular lines on the match circuit. It’s diameter calibration is extremely accurate, and it has all of the key properties required - superb knot strength, proven reliability and a clear low visibility colour.

CHOOSING YOUR LINE
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR LINE... SA
FOR SALTWATER FISHING No matter if you are surfcasting, spinning inshore or boat fishing, Shimano lines always provide high knot strength, low stretch and high abrasion resistance. If you are looking for a soft and smooth line, with low price, always choose monofilament, but if you need low stretch and high abrasion resistance fluorocarbon should be your first choice. 10
SMOOTH UV RESISTANT OUTER-LAYER HYPER RESISTANT INNER-CORE LOW MEMORY MID-LAYER
INVISITEC EXPLAINED... Line visibility is one of the key factors when choosing a mainline line, along with strength and casting ability. Shimano Invisitec incorporates all three of these important features thanks to Triple Core Technology. The translucent outer-layer is virtually undetectable in water, the lowmemory mid-layer enhances casting performance and the hyper resistant inner-core delivers the strength needed in the most extreme situations. 11
