New products 2016/17 Welcome to the Shimano 2016/17 new products guide. This year sees the introduction of many new products, all designed to satisfy modern angling trends ensuring you get the maximum performance and satisfaction from your fishing. The universal increase in lightweight lure fishing has been one of the key motivations for the development of the new Magnumlite Rotor. This feature can be found on the award winning Vanquish and Stradic CI4+ reels and offers increased weight saving, combined with more strength, better balance and improved lightweight rotation. For lightweight lure angling there’s nothing better. On some of the new larger reels used for carp and surfcasting there are two new developments which will maximise your casting performance Super Slow 5 Oscillation and Parallel Body - see page 12 and 13 for full details. Both of these features are included in the new Ultegra XT-D, the most talked about carp reel of 2016! BALL BEARINGS EXPLAINED Shimano Shielded Anti-Rust Bearings have undergone a special heat treatment resulting in high metal strength and long lasting corrosion resistance. Because of their treatment, these bearings will last at least 10 times longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings in high salinity environments. These Shielded A-RB bearings use either a rubber shield or stainless steel shield (depending on bearing size) for the ultimate in corrosion resistance and contaminant protection against sand, salt or dust. Shimano Anti-Rust Bearings are specially treated stainless steel bearings to drastically increase the metal strength and corrosion resistance of the bearing. These bearings will last at least 10 times longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings in high salinity environments. Although these bearings are not shielded like the Shimano Shielded A-RB bearings this does not automatically implicate that these bearings are more fragile or vulnerable. Sometimes the actual positioning of a A-RB bearing in a Shimano reel can already rule out the chance of contamination by any sand, salt or dust and thus making the need for additional shielded protection unnecessary. Shimano Shielded Stainless Steel Bearings use either a rubber shield or stainless steel shield (depending on bearing size) for optimal corrosion resistance and contaminant protection against sand, salt or dust. Shimano Stainless Steel Bearings are of great corrosion resistance. Stainless steel bearings have better corrosion resistance against rust or stain than ordinary steel bearings do.
A new development where the rod and reel alignment is perfectly parallel. This delivers a smoother flow of line between the reel and the first guide and minimises ‘line slap’ of the rod, vastly increasing casting performace. See the new Parallel Body on the Ultegra XTD.
Developed to shift the reel’s centre of gravity closer to the rod. This has been achieved by moving the worm shaft oscillation mechanism 19mm from the bottom of the reel to the top. By moving the centre of gravity closer to the anglers hand position, the G Free Body helps to reduce fatigue and enhance casting comfort.
The concept is simple... to provide water resistance without creating a heavy rotation feeling. There are three key areas of the reel that require protection; the roller clutch, the body and the line roller. 1. The Drag Area: This is the most critical area when it comes to balancing water resistance and performance. In order to achieve water resistance without damaging the light and smooth rotation, a surface protection coating that causes water to bead on the surface has been added. This beading action prevents water from flowing into the small crevices where mechanisms align. 2. The Body Area: To protect the body, COREPROTECT utilizes a series of 12 different seals and a flat body joint with surface treatment. The anti-reverse switch has also been removed from the body in order to enhance protection. 3. The Line Roller: The line roller is a sealed one piece design that provides water resistance and low maintenance. The sealed design does not require oil as part of regular maintenance.
COREPROTECT prevents water entering the body, from under the rotor at the front of the body, and also into the Roller Bearing unit.

The rotor profile, which was previously symmetrical, is now asymmetrical. LONG RANGE CASTING TECHNOLOGY Shimano have launched two new technical features that improve distance casting performance. Super Slow 5 places 50 wraps of line onto the spool per full spool oscillation and Parallel Body aligns the reel perfectly on the rod ensuring a smoother flow of line from the reel. These new features, combined with Shimano’s AR-C Spool and Aero Wrap line lay ensure you maximise your casting distance.
Parallel Body is a new feature that is designed to improve dynamic line flow from the reel to the first guide. On many reels the spool is aligned slightly upwards towards the rod blank, but with Parallel Body it is at exactly 90° to the blank. The result is less line slap the blank as it travels towards the first guide during casting.
SUPER SLOW OSCILLATION = GREATER CASTING DISTANCE Slower line oscillation reduces the speed the line travels up and down the spool on the cast. This results less friction as line leaves the spool and reduced drag on the lead, which improves casting distance and accuracy. SHIMANO STANDARD Oscillation (up to 19 wraps per cycle) outperforms the industry standard. SHIMANO SLOW OSCILLATING (up to 49 wraps per cycle) exceeds almost anything else ever seen. Shimano now has two Super Slow Oscillation systems - Super Slow 5 (50 wraps) and Super Slow 10 (100 wraps).

The Ultegra XS-D is sure to be a surfcasting favourite with its new Super Slow 5 oscillation which wraps 50 turns of line onto the spool per full oscillation cycle. XT-B For anglers wanting a low cost reel for carp fishing, from a brand they can trust, the Aerlex XT-B has to be a serious consideration. The black bodied Aerlex XT certainly looks good on any specimen rod set-up and the addition of an AR-C spool and Aero Wrap II line lay makes distance casting easier for anglers of all abilities. Blank Construction
Many Shimano rods make use of exclusive carbon technology to achieve lighter, stronger, more responsive rods. This delivers improved performance, which leads to more enjoyment, and ultimately more fish. Two of the main technologies are Spiral X and Hi-Power X construction.

Spiral X is a process Shimano apply when constructing a rod blank and it offers the best balance of both strength and low weight. Rods built using traditional construction processes can suffer blank twist and torsion, not offering a true curve, which results in a loss of power and also effects casting distance, hooking power and overall ease of use. With the Spiral X construction process carbon is spirally wrapped in extremely tight coils, both inside and outside of the blank. The Spiral X construction process increases overall performance and reduces blank twist or torsion. Shimano utilise over 30 different types of carbon tape, with each rod utilising different configurations to make the most effective blank for its intended use.
Hi-Power X
ROD TECHNOLOGY
Hi-Power X is an extremely important feature. The Hi-Power X incorporates a carbon tape wrap on the outside of the blank in a spiral pattern to increase overall strength. This also enhances stiffness and removes twist completely. This process offers greatly increased performance when casting longer distances and produces more accuracy and greater strength when hooking hard fighting fish. Hi-Power X construction also allows the carbon tape to be wrapped from the butt to the tip of the blank, which is an industry first. Because fine tips are more prone to twist, Hi-Power X is an extremely effective feature in this area of a blank. Shimano has both the knowledge and technology to apply this to such fine sections.

Shimano Softube Top provides the sensitivity of an ultra fine solid carbon tip with the lightness of a hollow construction. Softube Top construction can be found on models where sensitivity and finesse are both important requirements. The smooth, seamless action of Softube Top offers the angler an unrivalled experience for bite detection and fish-playing performance.

Taftec
Traditionally, solid carbon tips are made by forming carbon fibre cloth into a solid cylindrical carbon fibre bar, which is then ground to a tapered profile to make the tip. Because the fibres in the carbon cloth are multi-directional they become damaged during the surface grinding process which can weaken the final tip and give inconsistent results. Shimano TAFTEC tips utilise a pre-stretched T-3500 directional yarn fibre with low resin saturation. This directional alignment of the fibres results in much less damage during the grinding process and results is a spineless construction which tests have shown to be much stronger, lower in weight, faster in action and more sensitive. TAFTEC tips are used throughout the Shimano rod range where sensitivity is an important requirement of the the rod.
CI4+
Shimano develop a wide range of reel seat designs to match the rod on which they are applied. Some of the more specialised reel seats incorporate the use of CI4 and CI4+ carbon. CI4 is over 20% lighter and 1.6 times stronger than conventional polymers, with CI4+ being a technical advancement of CI4 which offers even more strength. This exclusive material allows Shimano to make ultra light reel seats, whilst maintaining the maximum strength.

Carbon Monocoque
An integrated hollow rear grip that is made from carbon. This advanced design removes the need for other materials to be wrapped on to the blank, is extremely lightweight, and offers excellent transfer of vibration from the blank to the hand. When compared with existing grips, the Carbon Monocoque is up to 10g lighter and increases sensitivity by up to 130%, enabling you to feel every vibration of a lure and the exact moment a fish attacks. Extensive testing has delivered excellent results producing outstanding performance, and the Carbon Monocoque design gives Shimano more options to develop much more sensitive rods for many other fishing disciplines.
Rod Materials Rod Components & Features Toray NANOALLOY technology is used on selected premium Shimano rods. The resin, which holds the carbon fibres together in the blank, is distributed more evenly, eliminating weak spots and creating a better alignment of the fibres. The result is stronger, lighter and more responsive fishing rods.
Shimano High Pressure Carbon is a process which creates stronger, more responsive blanks. Pressure is applied to the blank surface during curing (heating) which evenly distributes the resin through the carbon fibre matrix. The result is a much stronger, more consistent performance and improved response.
Shimano Low Resin Carbon uses less resin to hold the carbon fibres together. This results in lighter more responsive blanks. Low Resin Carbon is usually used on lightweight rods where balance and action are very important.

99 JAN PORTER TRIBUTE
Jan Porter was associated with Shimano for over 20 years. An exceptional angler of many fishing styles, Jan’s input to product development was exceptional, as was his communication with anglers at exhibitions, in magazines, on screen and in recent years through social media. He will be missed greatly by all who had the pleasure to know, work or meet with him.
TRIBUTES TO JAN FROM ANGLING AND SHIMANO COLLEAGUES Mick Brown (UK predator angler) Without doubt, Jan will be remembered as one of the great anglers of his era. I got to know Jan well during our time together through our shared passions of fishing and music, and his knowledge of so many other subjects was both wide and deep. Sincere, honest, enthusiastic, sensitive and caring are just a few of the adjectives that go a small way to describe a man who gave so much. I feel privileged to have known him so well. Iain Macmillan (UK carp angler) In memory of ‘the man in red’ or ‘Mr Tribal’ himself. Jan was an infectious character who left everyone he met feeling so much better for knowing him, we will all miss his mesmerising ways so much at Shimano, and we’ll never forget him. “Shine bright you crazy diamond.”
Jan Porter 1955-2016 The 27th of April 2016 was a sad day for many anglers in the world of angling following the passing of Jan Porter. Not only was Jan a top-flight match angler back in the 1980s, when he was known as ‘the man in red‘ for his colourful fishing attire,but he also chalked up many years as a tackle shop owner, specimen angler and angling consultant, most notably for Shimano. He first came to prominence as a member and then captain of the legendary Trentman AC team, which became the first team to win the UK Division 1 National and the Angling Times Winter League in the same season - a historic double. He also represented both England and Norway (his mother is Norwegian) in international match fishing competitions before changing tack in 1992 and targeting specimen fish of all species. Swapping his unique red clothing to green and then ultimately camouflage as he helped Shimano launch its Tribal range of clothing and tackle. He began fishing with his late father, Terry, who was a keen angler and would often take young Jan to venues like the river Trent at weekends and during holidays. It was the beginning of a lifelong angling adventure. Having started his work career as an engineer at Rolls Royce for 10 years, he then owned a tackle shop – Jan’s Tackle in Hucknall – which, with help from his family and staff, allowed him to develop his match fishing career. The self-proclaimed ‘failed rock star, born-again angler’ was a hit thanks to his red clothing, long hair, his penchant for rock music and his undoubted natural angling ability. It wasn’t long before fishing magazines were using him as a columnist and contributor. This inevitably led to many TV angling appearances, DVDs, videos and more, all aimed at encouraging newcomers to get involved in fishing, a passion he had throughout his angling career. Jan was one of the best known characters in angling with a friendly personality that appealed to all fishermen, young and old. Always ready with words of advice, encouragement and a great story teller, Jan had time for everyone and was hugely popular, as witnessed by the thousands of messages of condolence received after his death. Angling lost a legend of the sport on the 27th of April 2016 and he will be missed greatly by friends, colleagues and family for years to come, but his memory will live on. Willem Stolk (Dutch predator angler) For almost 20 years Jan and I had a special friendship. We had a connection that seemed to work so easily and a passion for fishing that ran through our bodies. In my boat I still have his cap as a reminder of a great friend. I miss Jan… a true gentleman with a great heart and a angler of formidable ability. Gerard Bakkenes (Sr. Marketing Manager Shimano Europe ) I was fortunate and honoured to meet Jan when I started with Shimano in 2000. At the time he had an outstanding idea to create the first and still one of the biggest Specimen Carp Communities in Europe ‘Team Tribal’. Jan’s vision, passion and energy supported us in creating one of the biggest successes in Shimano. I remember working together for hours on his famous, hand drawn product sketches, which resulted in fantastic clothing and luggage ranges. As well as being extremely creative and passionate, Jan was one of the warmest, most thoughtful and friendliest people I have ever come across. With Jan’s passing Shimano is going to miss a true angling hero. Craig Brew (Former Shimano UK Managing Director) From Jan’s first interview with Shimano, it was clear that he was someone special. Immensely creative and a born marketer, Jan was there at the birth of Tribal and the lynchpin of our trade shows and exhibitions. A man of integrity and soul. I feel privileged and honoured to have known and worked alongside him for so many years and to have been able to call him my friend. Steve Ringer (UK match angler) I was totally gutted to learn of Jan’s passing. We worked together at Shimano for many years and it was Jan who gave me my big break in the industry by taking me under his wing. He was always my first port of call if I ever needed advice workwise. Certainly one of the greats as far as I’m concerned. Alan Scotthorne (the World’s most successful match angler) Jan Porter served his match angling career with the mighty Trentmen team during the 80’s, one of the best river fish teams in history. My team Barnsley Blacks had many a battle with them when the river Trent was at its best. It was a team of angling hero’s and Jan was certainly one of them. He was also a master of telling a great story and I spent many a time after matches transfixed on his every word. Jan Porter will live on in my memories for ever, he was a great angler and a lovely man. Ali Hamidi (UK carp angler and TV presenter) My admiration of him extends back to when I first started fishing and read about his match fishing antics. He was a true gentle giant, a loving guy with an easy come, easy go attitude. He was a credit to angling.
